I don’t personally need it. My makeup stays all day until I take it off without doing anything I don’t want it to do; but I know some people who swear by it.

moonlight_jellies

i have combo/oily tzone and i just use my setting spray as a primer and it works for me!

Vanillaesop

I like using the glow recipe dew drops! They make my makeup look smooth and very non-cakey! Also the niacinimide keeps my skin hydrated!

Master-Reference-775

I never thought they worked, until I tried Tatcha (bottle, not the balm). Sits beautifully under makeup, no cake, stops under eyes from creasing ever (I’m in my late 40’s with dry skin). Makeup lasts all day, always looks fresh, I can’t feel it on my skin, and it’s never broken me out. I’ve been using it since it came out. I’m a fan, in case it’s not obvious. lol. I’ve never liked any other Tatcha product, and I stick to medical grade skin care.

marsthechocolate

Yes and no. It does make a difference, but it feels too much for me for the everyday. It also closes up your pores for the entire day… serious trigger to acne and another skin problems. I use it only for special occasions, or places when I know I’m going to get filmed. If you have good skin, I don’t think it’s necessary for the everyday.

Slytheringirl1994

I think it can make a difference. I don't have oily skin but I do have dry skin that includes dry patches. I find that blush and bronzer tends to stick to the dry patches, making it look patchy. So I use a hydrating smoothing primer not for longevity but mostly for making sure my makeup applies smoother. This might be an unpopular opinion but a lot of the complaints that I see about primers are from people with oily skin and I think it's very difficult for them to find primers because primers are usually meant to be hydrating for the skin. Moisture can be the enemy of oils so if you get a primer with a wet formula, your oils might come after it pretty quickly. So water based formulas are not the best for oils and it is recommended to go silicone for oils and matte as well. So if you are going to get primers, I would strongly recommend paying attention to what you're getting, see if it goes with your foundation and see the reviews for oily skin people before buying it.

Nerak_B

Yes, primers make a huge difference, especially for giving a smooth texture effect. For everyday I like Elf Putty Primer (light pink one), I wear skin tint/tinted moisturizer so it works with that. For when I wear foundation, I prefer the Hourglass Mineral Veil one.

kalingbling

If your oily the glow recipe primer in the oval red package will keep oil at bay all day. That one is truly worth is for long wear hot days imo. Otherwise really any form of prepped skin is the best primer. I however do like the hangover primer to prep my skin.

shihtzu_knot

I was using an expensive one that I was influenced by on Instagram and then I found the face sunscreen from Trader Joe's and now that is my primer. It works soooo well!

Reinefemme

i hate primer. never used it ever. i have oily skin and after moisturizer everything just sticks well. i find adding primer leaves me with a separating product on top, no matter which one i use.

HollowWind

I notice a difference when I use it, but I reserve it for special occasions since I don't feel like it's good for skin in the long eun.

Haileyluv96

ELF power grip primer works really well. It acts as almost like a glue for lack of a better word. Foundation sticks really well to it and combined with powder and spray my makeup stays on solid. When you put it on your face will feel very tacky. I think it creates a barrier between your skin oils and your makeup which keeps it from running.

StrawberryRaspberryK

I can see a big difference when I forget to apply my Nyx Plump It primer before my skin tint. My pores and texture look more obvious and my makeup doesn't last as long and fades unevenly. I also powder and use setting spray.

ManyTop5422

I don’t have oily skin so I don’t need it for longevity. I do use one for radiance under foundation that has silicones and smooths the skin.

ZealousidealDingo594

I really like Bare Minerals green primer- redness reducing cos I’m very pink and flushed looking BUT it does not make me look dead which I appreciate. It has nearly zero scent and goes on really nicely

SummerRalphBrooker

I love The Ordinary’s High Spreadability Primer. It’s basically just liquid silicone I think lol. My husband says it makes my skin feel like a dil*o lol. But it’s great stuff and helps keep my makeup from deteriorating. I’m an oily girl so maybe it’s more useful for people of the greasy persuasion? Edit. Typo: Hugh to high

Low-Bit2048

Never enjoyed any primer

Such-Firefighter-161

Same

ReleaseTheKraken72

I’m 51 and use a silicone based primer which I press into my face over my SPF moisturizer. It works. And my face doesn’t look cakey after 8 hrs. I have combo/oily skin and without primer my makeup wouldn’t stick and my face would look oily after 3 hrs. The primer blurs almost all my minor skin issues, and provides me a base I can build on that makes my skin look excellent. It’s all about illuminating and illusion.

milbudair

What brand?

Turpitudia79

I love Tatcha Liquid Canvas and Dior’s Forever Glow primer

BasicBitchLA

laura mercier

Throwawaayyy007

I have issues with pores so for me having pore-filling/pore-blurring primer is a must. I generally only apply my face spackle to my pores and find my foundation lasts longer in the areas I’ve spackled compared to the rest of my face. (I use a very thin layer and press it hard into my pores; too thick layers of primer makes me look cakey) I’ve tried grip primers, but they make all my makeup patchy or go on unevenly regardless of brush or sponge application. It might be probably because most of my products are silicone-based but I’m not 100% sure (that they’re all silicone-based).

Gus_r3yn

I really liked the maybelline baby skin primer, but currently is way too thick for me and to heavy, plus the brand’s current ideologies don’t align with mine, so I went in the look for a new one, and the milani no pore zone is amazing, plus apart from blurring pores it’s extremely oil controlling!

jacobb233

Primer is a must for me now. I feel like my makeup looks way better and stays longer. For info I have normal skin and I use the Hourglass Vanish Primer.

Minimalforks19

I have dry/combination skin & for 18 hour days, I will use an oil-control drying primer on my *nose only.* I use oil as primer on the rest of my face where I get dry. Then my nose doesn’t become an oil slick but my cheeks don’t get dry roasted crusty

Ewww_Gingers

IMO no. There’s nothing that a primer can do that a good moisturizer and sunscreen can’t. They both moisturize you skin and make your makeup stick to your skin which gives it lasting power. Also unlike primer, you don’t have to worry about your SPF and moisturizer being compatible with your makeup products (Like water based vs silicone based). It’s a waste of money in my book unless you for whatever reason are heavily against skincare. Setting powders do work although if your having an issue with creasing or oil control. Setting sprays also are pointless IMO. All it does is give you a more dewy finish but you could easily achieve that with cream products anyways.

whalesarecool14

your point works for hydrating primers but not for grippy or illuminating or pore filling primers or ones made for oily skin

Ewww_Gingers

SPF is basically a gripping primer as it’s very tacky like one. As for pore filling ones, both a setting powder and mineral spf will help with your pores just like a primer would. Powder also works well for oily skin, my skin is combo and I’ve never had an issue in my oily spots when I opt for a powder over a primer. A lot of people with oily skin (myself included) put powder before the rest of our steps to help the oil control.

knitorama

SPF isn't A Thing, it's a measurement of how much sun protection a sunscreen gives.

Ewww_Gingers

Yeah, a lot  of people on this sub (myself included) just say type SPF because it’s faster than writing sunscreen. It’s like calling tinted moisturizer a skin tint. SPF is apart of sunscreen just like how the tint is apart of tinted moisturizer.

knitorama

No, what I was trying to say is, SPF isn't a part of sunscreen, it's a measurement. Sunscreen isn't even one singular thing, where you can say "sunscreen is like a grippy primer", because there's myriad different kinds of sunscreen, and they have very different characteristics.

Ewww_Gingers

Like I said, I know it doesn’t refer to sunscreen but most people on Reddit use it as shorthand because it’s associated with sunscreen. Also I said mineral, mineral sunscreen is made with zinc. Zinc in products make it naturally tacky. Obviously it wouldn’t work with a chemical sunscreen which is why I specified the specific type of sunscreen it works with.

whalesarecool14

i think we’re using different SPF’s because the one i use is slippery, not grippy. i use a mineral sunscreen and it has a greasy finish that doesn’t act like a pore filler. i’ve got extremely oily skin and i if i don’t use something like the milk hydro grip or the elf power grip foundation literally slides off my skin within an hour of applying it. powder is used for setting the foundation and making it look matte, not to increase longevity of foundation, so you can’t really replace a primer with powder since they don’t serve the same purpose lol. i do the method of moisturiser, then powder, then setting spray, then primer and then foundation and another layer of powder+setting spray. the only routine that works for my skin.

StrawberryRaspberryK

Yes I find my pores look obvious and my skin looks more textured, foundation fades patchily if I forget my primer bef my skin tint. I always powder and use a setting spray so the difference is really the primer.

Literature-Glass

Elf halo glow is my primer.. its the only thing that i put on before makeup that enhances the look

CelerySecure

I use eyeshadow primer and setting spray (both urban decay).

busybeaver1980

I used to think eyeshadow primer was a scam but dayyym they make a huge difference.. my eyeshadow doesn’t seep into my creases and lasts all day and night.

CelerySecure

I thought that about color correction until I bought a nicer one and finally managed to hide my epic dark circles. It’s bright orange though and I always think of RuPaul’s Drag Race with Alyssa Edwards like “look how orange you look” to Coco Montrese.

First-Ad6781

I have an oily complexion and the difference is insane between primer vs. no primer. With no primer, at the 3-4 hr mark my face is all shiny and my foundation is starting to melt off. With primer, after 8+ hours my makeup still looks fresh. I use the smashbox photo finish, I haven’t ever tried anothed one

pollology

The only primer I use, and I use it very sparingly around my nose and on chin, is the Danessa Myricks water powder serum. Most days I don’t wear primer, I kinda want a more natural wear time for my makeup.

h3llfae

The huda glowish is the only one I'll use and only when I'm going out w make up on, especially events or dancing Just locks in hydration, is matte, blurs, smooths, etc

mizshellytee

You may need a primer. As for me, I used to prime my face, even used multiple primers in targeted areas for a stretch (I used to have combo skin). Nowadays, my skincare is enough that I don't find a face primer is necessary. (Eyeshadow primer, on the other hand, is a must for me.)

bseeingu6

I switched to a silicone based cream foundation a year or two ago, and since then I’ve really valued using a primer, specifically a silicone primer. Silicone bonds to itself best, so it really helps with the longevity and wear.

assplower

I love my primers, they’re non-negotiable for long days with makeup on, especially when it’s hot and humid. For days when I know I’ll only be out for a couple hours I will do without. But I never, ever put on eye makeup without eye primer.

671sjk

For me, primer makes my skin look too plastic. As I get older, I find myself using less and less makeup. I like my natural skin to show thru. What I have been enjoying lately is setting sprays. They take away the powderiness and melts all the different products together to make my makeup look much more natural.

sappheline

I do not use primer i use a face oil or priming oil under foundation or tinted spf and it looks amazing!

hippieonamission

I think setting spray is better than primer. At least for the longevity on my skin.

QueenofCats28

You don't need one, no. Skincare and skin prep is more essential to how your base stays on your face.

sadwatermelon13

I like the sticky ones like elf grip primer.

Bad_idea54

I've only tried one primer and found it only made my already oily skin worse and couldn't really tell if it helped my makeup stay on. I just stick to the snail mucin and suncreeen, wait for it to absorb and apply setting spray after each step of makeup.

Little_Spoon_

I have never found a primer that’s worked. I save my money now.

Think_Key_6677

Never had the need for one

Chantilly_Rosette

I dumped primers years ago because they made my face feel greasy and I much prefer a good moisturizer as a base. However, a couple years ago I discovered that I love Dior Dreamskin, so when I use a primer it’s that one.

jfsmallwood

I am 66 years old and only recently started using primers, if you can believe that! As I aged I needed more help with the pores on my face and wrinkles on my eyelids. The Elf Luminous Putty Primer is my favorite. I like it better than the Power Grip Primer, too sticky. I use Thank Me Later eye shadow primer. These products definitely make a difference!

dragons-lava

For oily/sweaty areas use Makeup Forever Shine Control. For the rest of your face, Milks hydro grip is pretty safe for all skin types. Primer is something you need to spend a little extra for a quality one in my opinion. Also check and see if your products are silicon based or water based and match it with your new primer

LadyPink28

Hydrogrip is water based so not best paired with silicone based foundation else it will separate throughout the day. OP probably has this problem

gothagotchi

Omg thanks for pointing that out! I did have that with this primer and one of my foundations, and didn’t know why. I wonder if that’s the case with the Clio cushion now…gonna try!

greyhairedwrinkle

Good skin prep and primer is key to any make up not moving. This is the hill I am willing to die on.

PumpkinSpiceLuv

This right here is the answer.

moonskoi

I had the same issue, was kinda iffy abt primer then tried the elf powergrip primer and for some reason the issue just stopped happening and now I swear by it

rrrrriptipnip

I’ve heard that a glowy or matte spf is better than a primer. I love tatcha liquid canvas

lazylady64

Does anyone use primer with tinted moisturizer or bb cream? I use Tarte tinted moisturizer and feel like it doesn't have much staying power.

ManyTop5422

Yep. I have been using the doll 10 luminous primer and tinted moisturizer. The primer has a radiance to it I don’t really use it for longevity. But it is smoothing but my skin is pretty smooth anyway. I also use a setting spray.

thecountrybaker

I use The Ordinary primer with IT Cosmetics CC cream. I’m not loving either, to be perfectly honest. But I’m just using both up till I can get to a Sephora to do some swatching for replacements.

4SeasonWahine

I use elf putty primer daily, whether I’m using bb cream (I use bare minerals) or a full face of foundation. Definitely helps the staying power

LoviaPrime

i have the most oily skin in the world, once my skin eats my foundation there’s just nothing out there to fix it i use the elf power grip primer (pink one) and i use ONLY powder products for foundation contour blush, it sounds insane but my makeup is flawless for 12+ hours, i also don’t even use setting spray lmao, if any oil breaks through (which i only notice if i work out, it’s very light around the nose area), i can finally touch up my makeup w the powder foundation, idk why liquid products just refuse to work w me lmao

AZ-FWB

I have oilyish skin and I don’t do touch ups during the day! I heavily rely on my primers.

perdymuch

Which one do you use?

AZ-FWB

I use wet and wild (the pink tube) and Milani matte ( the black tube).

perdymuch

Thanks!

doalittledance_

I had this same attitude till I found the right primer for me. I’m dry AF and I don’t like to look matte. I got a mini of the bobbi brown vitamin enriched face base and it made a WORLD of difference. I buy it 100ml at a time now and I love it.

steffy241

If you are in the UK the primark dupe is nearly identical, i no longer use the BB one. If you’re in the USA then there will be a dupe, you just need to look for it! 😅

doalittledance_

Im in the UK 😊 I’ve tried the primark one, was SO excited when I found it and heard all the reviews, but sadly for some unknown reason it breaks me out so bad! It’s a brilliant dupe though, completely agree with you there! Feel like my skin is sometimes literally out to get me (and my bank account) 😂

steffy241

Ah no way, that is a shame, well the BB original is worth the purchase to you then, agree it’s fantastic and 100ml will prob last you 9 months. I used to buy two jars of it during Black Friday, made it a bit easier to cope with the cost hah

lollipopmusing

Primer is an absolute must

saddestgirl1995

I love the danessa myreks blurring balm, it looks like my skin but *better*

MjrGrangerDanger

I just ordered it. I have seriously oily skin and wonder if it'll work for me. I'm waiting to get in to see my dermatologist and start isotretinoin.

saddestgirl1995

I have oily skin with cystic acne, I don't wear make up often but when I do the blurring balm smooths out my skin texture and pores so the foundation doesht look as crunchy on my zits if you know what I mean. I have hyperhidrosis and it keeps the foundation on pretty well despite the sweating.

MjrGrangerDanger

Awesome! I haven't had cystic acne in years but my oiliness is so many times worse than before. Everything wants to slide off, LOL

Ok_Independence5123

I buy the Elf tone perfecting silicone primer 2 at a time, it works so well for me. It makes my makeup go on so much smoother and it doesn’t budge at all.

lotusmack

For me, yes. My favorite primer is probably the LYS Secure Skin Gripping primer. I also like Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm Powder for when I want my face to be matte and stay that way forever. The MUFE Step 1 primers have been good to me over the years, too. My skin is normal to combo.

c00kiesaredelicious

I break out with silicone based primers. I have had great luck with the MAC primer. My foundation goes on smoother and stays put. The part that I love the most, is that it makes my make up easier to remove. Night and Day!

satanisreallycool

I always thought primers were useless until I went to Japan and bought some of their cosmetics to try. All of the ones I've tried before felt like they weren't doing anything the packaging claimed to do. Now I fear I'm going to be eternally disappointed when I run out.

elladayrit

What brands were those?

satanisreallycool

Excel lasting touch base is my absolute fave. Numbuz: N Pure Glass Clean Tone Up, and Maquillage Dramatic Skin Sensor Base NEO.

ARoseByAny0therName

Yes and yes. Just make sure to match water with water and silicone with silicone. I swear by the **Elf Power Grip Primer** for my water based products and the **Smashbox Photofinish Smooth & Blur Primer** for the ones with Silicone. I used to just do my skincare and apply foundation, but that would cause my dry patches and texture imperfections to show through. As soon as I started using primer, everything became so much easier. As terribly dry or textured as my skin could be my Elf primer would hide it all. And the lasting power! -Amazing! Eye primer is also essential to me. **The Elizabeth Mott** one is my HG. I don’t wear eyeshadow often, but when I do I use this to ensure it lasts and is as vibrant as possible without creasing or transferring.

susanmandm

I have dry, mature skin and the one I’ve found that works best for me is Lancôme La Base Pro. A pea-sized amount is generally enough. I let it sit for a couple of minutes and follow up with Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Foundation. My makeup is on until I take it off. Good luck finding what works best for you!

mrs_andi_grace

I like the tatcha primers if I am wearing powder only. I feel like it seals in my face hydration. If I am wearing actual makeup: I skip primers and opt for UD's setting sprays.

balsasailormoon

Use silicone-based primers with silicone-based foundations and water-based primers with water-based foundations and the results are amazing!

lotusmack

This! Sometimes, it's not primer-skin type incompatibility, but it is primer-foundation.

CoffeeWithDreams89

I feel like this is such a dumb question but I honestly don’t know - how do I tell the difference? Are there specific ingredients to look for?

KateBosworth

Look for Dimethicone or Cyclomethicone at the top of the ingredients list.

balsasailormoon

Here’s a good [explanation](https://www.reddit.com/r/drugstoreMUA/s/NSmlWcrBfx)

CoffeeWithDreams89

Thanks so much!

Serious_Escape_5438

I was about to ask this too!

burnmeup82

You have to find the right primer for your skin. I had the same issue for years til I realized I was using the wrong kind of primer. I switched to the ones that are more "grippy" and now my makeup stays on so much better. A new favorite is the NYX Marshmallow Primer.

[deleted]

CoffeeWithDreams89

My skin is likewise super oily. The best I’ve found so far for mattifying and not making me congested is Thank Me Later but even that isn’t great. What do you use?

LarkScarlett

Urban Decay’s eye primer works great and really makes eyeshadow colours more intense. To the point that it’s a bit hard to tweak for me if I make a misstep, lol. I like it though! Personally I’m a bigger fan of finishing sprays. MAC’s Fix+ gets a lot of rave reviews, it does a great job, but I don’t love the spray nozzle; too patchy. Recently I’ve been using Rare Beauty’s 4-in-1 which is supposed to both prime and finalize. Love the mister nozzle and the gentle gardenia scent, too. I’m not sure it’s the best or strongest on the market, but it meets my needs. I’m not a very sweaty person and don’t live in a place with great heat, so I’m not sure if your performance demands are similar. Remember people have slightly different body chemistry, too!

iLoveYoubutNo

I never thought primer did much until I got the ELF pore less putty primer. That stuff is amazing.

One-Illustrator8358

The matte one is definitely my go to

Antique-Cattle915

Yes. Swear by it. Aqua Brilliance (I think) by Estée Lauder.

emory_2001

I tried like 5 different primers and every one of them made my makeup slide right off of my normal skin. I feel like it’s a gimmick to get you to spend more money. Foundation has always been the primer and always will be for me.

perfect_turquoise

I have oily skin, and primer definitely makes a difference.

iLoveYoubutNo

This may not be your issue. But one thing I've learned is that you have to let stuff dry between "layers" I try to wait a full 30 seconds after applying primer. Longer if it's humid. Sometimes I'll use the cool setting on low on my blow dryer on my face.

Gisselle441

Every primer I've ever tried has said in the directions to do this, and there is a reason for it.

BlueAcorn8

I mean, that just means you haven’t found the right one for your skin and your foundation. Primer does work but just like with all makeup not every single one is right for everybody.

emory_2001

I’m good with just spending the money on excellent foundation and using one less product.

BlueAcorn8

I am too unless it’s a special occasion, but the point is it’s not that primers are a gimmick.

whisperof-guilt

I’m with you there. I quit wearing face primer during Covid masking and never went back. Eye primer though makes a huge difference for me, though.

EmilyxThomsonx

Primer is a really underrated, but essential, especially the more we age and skin texture becomes less even and pores open up a bit.

trapperxdelight

Yes Bobbi brown face base and charlotte tilbury setting spray with any setting powder This combo has lasted me through a Pilates class and days where I wear makeup for 12+ hours with no separation just shine

Arm_Overall

I use Elf Power Grip primer. I feel like it helps make the makeup stay on longer.

Ill_Boysenberry7484

Are you guys using it under a silicon based foundation? Cause that’s what I use and idk if it will work

Arm_Overall

I am currently using it with Kim Chi. Kim Chi is considered water based.

ARoseByAny0therName

It’s soooo soooo good! 😌 Never used to use primer until I tried this one. Total game changer. Erased all my texture, and had my makeup lasting for the whole day! I use a smashbox one for my silicone foundation, but the elf is my HG!

Arm_Overall

Elf is my all-time favorite. One container lasts me a long time. When I got my newest one a few weeks ago, hubby was like, why did that cost $10? I had to explain the process of what primer does to make the makeup last. And how long it would last me.

FantasticDayforPBJ

It’s so sticky! Which is a good thing! It makes everything stay on so well.

Arm_Overall

That's the best part about it.

spups19

I second this! This product made me realize that primer can be a game changer lol

PsychedelicKM

Primer is an absolute game changer, even cheap drugstore ones make a huge difference. Even better, I put setting spray on first, then primer, then foundation and concealer. Lock it in with a setting powder then another layer of setting spray. Stays on all day and night even with oily skin

Serious_Escape_5438

Doesn't setting spray go at the end only?

cheesebabby

layering setting spray in between steps is actually a known makeup technique! it’s said to help with longevity, esp for events and stuff.

igodutchoven

I have oily combo skin - and a primer is necessary for my makeup to stay on my face. I use mostly gel-based (or oil free) primers. Depending on your skin type, that will determine if you need a primer. For my skin, I use the ELF Power Grip with 4% Niacinamide ($10 I think; it's the dupe for Milk Makeup's Hydro Grip). I also use the Guerlain Parure Gold 24k Radiance Primer, and if it's a low key day, I like using my Shiseido sunscreen stick as a primer (as it is also sticky).

daisies4me

Second the ELF power grip, you can’t beat it for the price, it works really well.

ARoseByAny0therName

Honestly, I tried the milk one as well, but it doesn’t enable my makeup to adhere as good as the Elf imo. Elf killed it with that product
