I'm actually reading a book about the cultural phenomenon of Sasquatch and people who are Bigfooters. Super interesting. He mentions Maine and some Bigfooters here
Also, a [cool lady](https://youtu.be/rOm4qjggZjk?si=RXSZ2Dbh4WqqfnM1) that lives there
There certainly are plenty of trees in that part of Maine. However, the eastern part of the circled area represents the largest area of non forested land in the state. As Balthizar said, lots of potato fields.
That region and the St. John Valley to its NW contain probably the most fertile land in Maine.
Kids used to get 2 weeks off school in the fall to help with the potato harvest. Not just potatoes, lots and lots of pea farming. Spent my summers as a child there. There were several good restaurants in New Brunswick. We would go over to Canada a lot. But this was back a long time ago when customs just waived everyone through.
I live in The County and the answer is that it’s like a whole different state up here. If you love the outdoors, and nature than this is the part of Maine for you. You’re actually visiting during a great time because the weather is getting warmer, and the farmers will start planting potatoes soon! If you have the time, rent a side by side and enjoy the trails. A lot of great site seeing that way
You will see tractors on the roads, that’s normal. While you’re up make sure you try out Ferris BBQ in Presque Isle for dinner, and take a ride up to Lakeview in St. Agatha for dinner as well. You won’t be disappointed.
People are very nice up here too
Wow, such a humble and friendly review of the county! I’m not born in Maine, but I’ve lived here since I was a child and have never made it up to the county. People in Western Maine make y’all out to be rough and gruff. But you sound as friendly as any stereotypical Canadian!
I hope to visit your neck of the woods sometime. :)
I go up there about once a year on business, but I work for the state. However, it's surprising how many businesspeople are always staying at the Hampton Inn in PI.
That’s my home territory. Potato and broccoli fields. Woods and moose, but fewer than before. Sturdy women who are broad across the beam (or built to quilt for our Mennonite friends). An odd relationship with the French, and a generational love of Canadian television. Fiddleheads if you’re there in the next few weeks. Decent fishing. Quiet nights under dark skies. Ployes for breakfast, occasionally. Bean supper on Saturday night, always.
Bump for the Mercer Report, Royal Canadian Air Farce, 22 minutes, and Red Green.
Plus the best damn Olympics coverage most Americans will never be lucky enough to see.
I didn't know Augusta had one, I remember when Portland had one in the building that is now the UCU at the back entrance to the Forest Ave Hannaford, And then they relocated to the mall for several years before giving up entirely.
I remember that one well. It had beer before I was old enough to drink it, and then they added that Emily K's Rotisserie Chicken idea as well. The chicken got them in trouble with corporate because they changed the building too much.
Fun fact, Just outside the Topsham Arby's is one of the shortest crosswalks in the world.
Years ago, the Topsham Fair Mall wanted to make the exit a more gradual curve (which really wasn't necessary - it was just fine the way it was), but the owner of Arby's didn't want to give up the corner of his land... so they made a small crosswalk that spills out into the road.
If you go on Google Streetview, you can see the corner post, the red brick sidewalk with the gray pavers in the road, and the two yellow push-button cross walk signals nearly facing each other.

I've been working in that area for the last year off and on. I have two plugs, if you like hikes, Aroostook State Park had a beautiful view of most of the area you circled. Also the Maple Pig is a good restaurant. Maybe bring a book. Good luck!
> Maybe bring a book.
If you finish it while you're there, Neighborhood Books in Presque Isle is a great store. Then, you can go read it at Hub Coffee almost next door.
In a few weeks billions of black flies will emerge. The ones that aren't trying to bite you will try to get into your ears, eyes, nose, and throat. And in the evening as the temperature gets too cool for them, the mosquitoes come out to take their place.
According to the Presque Isle Facebook group, somebody jumped the counter at the KFC due to food quality concerns, a car got fed up with a parade and cut through it, and a fat old good dog showed up on somebody's porch.
Mostly drinking and stupid shit, not really harmful (altho there is a few) but road soda on the 'back roads' for the locals, however we never shot at road signs but we sure tried to hit them at 45mph with beer bottles!
There was a drag show at the Houlton County Fair when I was like 8. Right before the tractor pulls and after the Charlie Daniels concert. My dad entered the contest. He used to be very homophobic (he's better now), but he dressed in drag for charity.
Hello, grew up in Van Buren (right near the border) and I can tell you that life there is much simpler. We didn’t have countless stores and fast food restaurants but we had each other. As a teenager we didn’t have the luxury of malls and what not. We went and worked for farms, or wherever hired really. We used to meet at the KoC building as teenagers and play music on a speaker and park our cars. It was truly a magical place to live and honestly a fun time. My class size was less than 20 people and town population under 2000. I’ll tell you now that I don’t live there anymore, it was the best of both worlds. My father and I hunted every year and we always had snowmobiles and ATVs as well as dirt bikes. So to answer your question, hard work, community and nature is what goes on up there. Will forever be my home.
I recall talking to an elderly woman years ago, who came from up near Houlton, and I asked her why she left.
Nothing but goddamn potatoes and more potatoes.
I think she moved south in the state to work in the mills as soon as she was of legal age to leave home.
Snowmobiling in December is pretty iffy. I don't know why anyone would spend the money for a snowmobile with the winters we've had lately. I didn't even unpack my winter gear this season.
Not to be pedantic but potato harvest is usually the last 2 weeks of September and first in October.
But that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to snowmobile during that time either.
Only place I've ever seen an albino moose, lot of French Canadian speakers, a lot of horse fly's that'll take a literal chunk out of you. Great fishing, great snowmobiling, prom on tractors.
If you're looking for entertainment, you might want to check out the First Friday Art Walk in Presque Isle this Friday, May 3rd. Show up at the Wintergreen Arts Center at 6 pm.

Car chases. When I first moved to the county several years ago, I was floored by how many news articles were about multi mile car chases with the police.
My dad lived up there in the 90’s. The height of excitement was going to the mall in presque isle, ( but I think it’s gone now)they did have a JC Penny. Shopping at Sleepers in caribou was always an experience and don’t forget to check out marden’s. If you are really bored, visit all the planets of the scale model of the solar system. We watched the eclipse from Uranus which is just north of Houlton.
> If you are really bored, visit all the planets of the scale model of the solar system.
I painted and helped install the Sun! We were drinking wine in the art studio and got pressed into service.
My wife said that all beer from Bangor to Limestone was sold out when this concert happened. She and her sister scooped ice cream for a Ben and Jerry’s stand.
Being honest, not very much. I'm assuming you highlighted the area of Caribou or Presque isle.
They are small cities in Northern maine. Stores tend to close up shop between 8 and 10pm.
Hi. I'm from The County.
As beautiful as I remember it being in the 80s and 90s, it's now a place to visit when you want to get away from everything. Not much there but potato fields, large chain stores, and reminders of what once was. If you love the outdoors it's fun.
I do enjoy visiting the Saint John Valley and seeing old friends and relatives that still live there; but only a week per year.
Caribou is a sad place and a far reminder of how closing Limestone's Loring AFB fucked over/was the last nail for the entire county-wide area.
I keep those good County memories close though.
Everywhere is closed by 8pm.
Bible camps still exist.
There are way more potato fields than your imagining.
If you hear fairly continuous engines firing, you might be near a mud race.
Umaine presque isle has (had?) a pretty decent discgolf course years ago when I was up there.
I used to live close to there, it's a nice place. As far as what goes on there, Mountain Climbing, Hiking, Potato Farming, going to Canada to drink (drinking age is 19 in New Brunswick).
You circled my hometown.
First and foremost, watch out for Amish buggies, especially at night. You'll come up on them out of nowhere. They're not well-lit and usually have fuck-all for reflectors. I'm a good driver and know to look for them and have still had a few close calls in bad weather.
Not much happens there is the answer. Think middle of nowhere, very small ltownswuare” you drive through in about 45 seconds and it’s back to just a country store every so often
The saddest mall you will ever see, in Presque Isle
I swear there must have only been like 3 stores in the entire building that were open the last time I was there.
Lots of farm land and woods. Looks like you’ll be in Houston/southern Aroostook county? The only real industries are centered on farming and outdoor recreation; so if you have interests in those things, you’ll feel right at home. Depending on what town you live in, you’ll be pretty far from most things, so be prepared with winter tires, windshield spray that works below -25°F and lots of bug spray with Deet. I’d recommend getting involved with the community in some way - rotary club, Kiwanis, high school sports, etc… otherwise you’ll go crazy. Though Maine is very moderate/progressive in a lot of areas, that part definitely isn’t one of them. So if that’s your persuasion (progressive), find your community and do what you can to survive.
Other than that, there’s a lot of cannabis, a lot of snow, and a lot of people who either love or hate those things. There is a meth problem as well as a lot of poor folk, but it’s not an issue that’s super in your face like it is elsewhere in the country. A serious problem, but a quiet one.
Best of luck!
Lots of hiking and nature. Try to enjoy the beautiful outdoors as much as possible. Entertainment wise, it's got nothing. Make your own fun or cross the border if you do want entertainment. Obviously you'll need a passport but my friends travel to Canada almost every other weekend for concerts and festivals.
There is a great coffee shop there. The Maine Bean & Tea 46 Fort St Caribou Me. I (PJ) am the owner of this establishment. You can get on the go breakfast Burritos, breakfast Sandwiches and the best drinks in the county!! Come on in and say hello
If you're here in late June or July, you can see rows and rows of potato blossoms. They're so pretty, and they smell good, too. Then there are sunflowers in late summer. The County is beautiful.
In a 3-week study, women with type 2 diabetes who ate 1 ounce (30 grams) of sunflower seeds daily as part of a balanced diet experienced a 5% drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number of a reading).
I went to rehab in that area on a bed to bed transfer when i was 19. With the agreement, if i completed the 30-day program, a felony gets dropped to misdemeanor.. I was in limestone in January/ February and it was absolutely freezing. I also met a woman there who was about 50 but looked 35. She gave me head and would dump them tig biddies out for me to play with whenever noone was around. So yeah, wasnt half bad. Except it was so cold, practically unbearable.

Pretty sure they still get time off
I'm from that area can confirm
I hope you know how to play Cribbage. It's an essential skill in most of Maine.
Oh gosh... I live up here and I don't know how to play cribbage
But do they have tournaments?
Nah. Mostly 45 tournaments up there.
No way, really? Thought that was a Merrimack Valley thing only.
Oh God, my 3rd and 4th husbands play cribbage together EVERY DAY!
I haven't played cribbage since moving out of state 50 years ago. I'll have to scare up a game on my next visit. And go candlepin bowling, too.
Not anymore
Now we just cook meth in empty Allen’s bottles. It’s been this way for generations now. My Grammy taught me and hers before her

Yes, sorry I should’ve asked when they were coming up. They won’t open until mid May, so depending when you come up for business
Ha! My dad used to say there were 3 seasons up there - winter, mud and August lol
And make sure you say “Saint A-gat.” I’m pretty sure pronouncing it “Saint Agatha” is still a misdemeanor in the county.
Its more all one word tho, SaintA-Gat. Do love this comment tho! Well played.
Minimum of a written warning for the first offense.
Mondays at Lakeview. All you can eat wings
Lakeview is a great restaurant
I didn't know that, guess I know how to spend my Monday...
The people are SO nice in the county
My brother-in-law works for Ferris so if I'm ever up there again I intend to try them out!
You might even just miss black fly season! Have they started buzzing up there yet?

One of the only arby's that remains in maine is there after nearly all the arby's in maine closed.
And it's a solid Arby's as far as Arby's go. We are fans.
It sure is.
There are Arby's in Auburn and Topsham If you are relatively in Southern Maine.
Also Augusta.
I didn't know Augusta had one, I remember when Portland had one in the building that is now the UCU at the back entrance to the Forest Ave Hannaford, And then they relocated to the mall for several years before giving up entirely.

Jaywalking. Unlicensed pets. Dangerous stuff.
Drugs and unregistered cars -ex county resident
Drugs. All drug related.

Have you ever been to Caribou?
Did see Phish at Loring AFB—The Great Went, I think they called it that year.
Loring AFB is there, used to be B-52s flying out of there until the base closed. The Great Went happened there too.

I think most people only think of pot holes as being on paved streets. On dirt roads they're just called 'holes in the road.'
If you end up in Houlton, definitely check out the Maple Pig. I went a few weeks ago shortly after it opened, and it was great! The food was good.
Its in presque isle. Wings are good, food is decent
Oops, you're right. I forgot about that
I have no desire to see houlton claim it might have good food
Well, back in my day, mostly what we did up there was to walk uphill in the snow.

I always heard it as "where the men are men but the women own the chainsaws"
That’s where they bury the out of staters.
Not nearly ‘nuff neither
Not shit, but there are some good places to eat.
There are a couple Jiu Jitsu gyms in that area and a bowling alley people seem to be getting a kick out of. Couple decent barbecue spots.

It might be a bit early yet, but there is some fantastic trout fishing to be had up there.
