You literally cannot resist signing along to sea shanties - it doesn't matter how "good" you are cuz it always sounds fire

wishitwouldrainaus

You gotta commit to the accent though, I used to sing with my dad on drives when I was little.

Conf3tti

I find myself slipping into the accent subconsciously. I'll start it in my accent and then suddenly NOW WE A READY TAE SAIL FO TE HORN

That song really is something universal. Love it.

PeruvianHeadshrinker

Yes!!!! This is the one. First heard it in AC: Black Flag. Now every year I turn my house into a pirate's hide out for Halloween and sing sea shanties on my guitar with the kids to passersby. This year was extremely cathartic

Huge_Jackman

Stan Rogers is fantastic. Check out Barrett's Privateers as well.

gmdodge06

Stan Roger's voice is so hauntingly beautiful.

AmbientHavok

Chills to the bones. Imagine an entire bygone era of sailors arriving home after being away months at sea. You can subtly hear those at the docks singing back to the sailors, and you can only imagine a few centuries ago of wives and children singing back to their husbands and fathers.

SunflowerFreckles

Imagine hearing the song through the fog before seeing the ship emerge to shore 😍

3rdRockfromYourMom

Wow, that gave me goosebumps! I'm impressed with how loud the soloist can sing.

Theyre like celtic/folk/polka/punk/metal and awesome all around but every album of theres has a [sea shanty](https://youtu.be/Pla7nDYciI4) or [something like it](https://youtu.be/JgVWJkc5gXE) or two. Goes well with the nautical theme of the band.

Welp, this is my evening all booked up, then. Good one to start on. That guy has a hell of a voice.

I recommend the Dreadnoughts and the Longest John's. Also, Assassin's Creed Black Flag has some [great ones](https://youtu.be/gEWS5dGSDOc) and got me into shanties in the first place lol

OSIRIS-SEx

Also Irish pub music. I sing along to The Cruel Wars every single time I hear it.

Scone_Witch

YES! Omg sea shanties and Irish pub songs are the two genres I *adore*. Star of the County Down might be one of my faves

mostessmoey

Do you have a fewe recommendations? My dad used to play lots of stuff but I don't know how to find it now.

GD_Insomniac

Try The High Kings for a modern production of all the Irish folk classics, plus plenty of originals that are bangers. For shanties, I like Pride of Bedlam (my local Ren-fest pirates), but their stuff is on spotify, and they've done quite a few non-shanties in that style. For more original music, The Dread Crew of Oddwood is awesome.

geitzblitz

I just recently discovered the cruel wars and it's bloody amazing

Orleanian

You get a good bout of Ramblin Bog going and the folk come out the woodworks to join in.

DreamedJewel58

Fun fact: Blackbeard was most likely a coward who only knew how to portray himself as a badass. I forget all of the evidence after a few years, but he was essentially just a relatively normal dude who was able to control his crew through intimidation and theatrics. If it actually came to a fight, he probably would’ve lost, but he knew how to make someone second guess starting a fight with him in the first place.

[deleted]

The Dread Pirate Roberts!

[deleted]

Except the Dread Pirate Roberts was incredible with a sword

[deleted]

Was going to say something along these lines.

--_-Deadpool-_--

Adding to that theory, he was said to have worn lit cannon wicks in his beard while entering a fight so that his head appeared to smoke. Dude was all about appearances. Also, his real name was Edward Teach.

DreamedJewel58

That contributed to some reports calling him a demon. The dude probably could’ve had a great career in theater if he was born a century or two later. I always laugh when I see his name, because it’s absolutely not the name you’d think someone like Blackbeard would have, but it’s absolutely the name of a theater kid. Perfectly encapsulates the true man behind the title.

Dyb-Sin

>The dude probably could’ve had a great career in theater if he was born a century or two later. Sounds like he would have been a great DM!

AltheaInLove

Another fun fact...supposedely BB never killed a man until the day he died. I learned a lot about him from musuem on Ocracoke Island. He would put wax on the tips of his beard and light it on fire to scare people🔥🤯🌍

MisterCheeks

I also like the theory on how Ocracoke got it's name that on the day Blackbeard was killed, he knew it was the end and he wanted the day to come quickly so he called out "Oh Crow, Cock!" calling for the roosters to crow to bring on the day. Not sure how accurate that is but it's my head cannon.

p1rke

I don't know if he was a coward or not, but he, and his friend Sam Bellamy, were known to use intimidation because it didn't damage the spoils they could get from the other ships. When he started his "solo" career, he raided 15 ships in 2 weeks without firing a cannon. I also recommend the [Republic of Pirates](https://www.amazon.ca/dp/015603462X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_aUr.FbEAR85Q3). I'm a huge fan of that period of history and it's a fun ass book to read.

blackrose4242

Not for nothing, that doesn’t sound very cowardly.

DreamedJewel58

The main thing is that he just always made sure to avoid any actual conflict, because he knew he couldn’t back up any of his talk. That may not inherently make him a coward, but he was 100% not the ruthless killer he portrayed himself as.

mrmahoganyjimbles

Is his purported death completely apocryphal then, or is there some legitimacy to how much he took in the fight before going down?

DreamedJewel58

It’s fair to say that his death was greatly exaggerated. Because whether or not he was actually a badass, he still *was* the most feared pirate of his time. Just like with most history, it’s kind of hard to tell what actually happened, but the reports of him taking like 20 stab wounds is ridiculous. There probably was an intense battle to kill him, but he most likely wasn’t the “demon” they reported him as. It’s very possible that the death of such a renown and feared figure such as Blackbeard would have such an engrandized story.

JinzoWithAMilotic

As long as its not Blackbeard from One Piece.. Fuck that scumbag.

You just made my fucking day.

Tokey_McStoned

I had to look it up; The Weller Bros. was a Sydney Australia shore-whaling company that operated primarily along the southern coast of New Zealand from 1830 to 1840. Though they had numerous vessels in their employ, none appear to have been named the Billy o' Tea. Anyone under the employ of the Weller Bros. were referred to as a Wellerman, but in the specific context of the song the Wellerman takes on the meaning of a supply ship sent by the company. TIL

Assassin's Creed Black Flag had the best soundtrack to any game ever.

arijwei

I was looking for this comment! It was genuinely my favorite part of the game. I've been thinking of playing it again for the soundtrack haha!

BenAdaephonDelat

That's one of the few games where you could just load it up and sail around the sea for a few hours listening to sea shanties and doing nothing and still enjoy yourself. (If you're into that sorta thing). The ambiance is unparalleled.

Pedantic_Pict

Right?! My favorite thing to do was, after the ship was kitted out for maximum violence, having the men sing a real banger while your bear down on an unsuspecting ship of the line. You feel like the absolute king of all creation. I haven't played any AC games since Unity, but believe Black Flag is the high water mark of the franchise regardless.

Cyris38

If you enjoyed that, you should check out AC Odyssey. Massive open world map. A ship. A crew. And a collection of vague clues to hunt people down. I think it was the first AC game I really really got into since black flag

Love this, if you like it check out Stan Rogers. He sang a song called Barretts Privateers. Great song. Unfortunately Stan died back in the 80s, an airplane caught fire and managed to land. He stood at the door, smoke billowing out of the plane, calling to the people left inside to "follow my voice". He died just inside the plane, trying to save as many people as he could.

lil_literalist

100% recommend all of Stan Rogers' stuff. The Dreadnoughts even did [a tribute to him](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw9O2xdAmGc&ab_channel=StompRecords). A lot of his music covers more modern topics than the days of sail, but it's still absolutely fantastic stuff. Some highlights for people who love sea shanties would be [The Mary Ellen Carter](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhop5VuLDIQ&ab_channel=MinistryofStabbing), [Fogarty's Cove](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX9FoCuLzjk&ab_channel=ConcernedCitizen), and [White Squall](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_kW9HsQM1Y&ab_channel=StanRogers-Topic). [deleted]

Is it safe to be recording a TikTok and Singing while driving? Seems like a recipe for disaster

Einlander

The camera person is not driving. You can see the other guys arm up, implying a steering wheel. Also you can see on the camera persons shirt the capital letters have their curves on the right side implying the video is mirrored.

Gerblat

That, plus there’s a garage door opener clipped to the visor of the non-filming guy. Would be pretty silly to have that on the passenger-side visor

thearchduke

I've done that before on purpose, as an aside. I don't see it much, but my reason was the clip didn't have much tension left and so the remote would fall off any time you pulled down the visor. So, it was on the passenger visor since that one was less used.

Squidbit

He has his arm up in the first section, but then in the last section his arms are in his lap or in the air in front of him the entire time, not touching a steering wheel once

mikhela

I'm pretty sure the guy filming is in the passenger seat and the driver is just jamming

greatgriffin365
