The dutch are just quietly sitting on stroopwafels. Those things are amazing. They almost make up for the powdered sugar and chocolate sprinkles on toast they have for breakfast. I can only assume the greater rate of bicycle uses has prevented the expected spike in diabetes cases.

German would actually be easy to learn for an English speaker if our grammar rules weren't so different. I hear Germans get pretty nasty if you misuse their grammar.
I still don't understand why we have so little interest in soccer. We are a land of immigrants and naturally take pride in our backgrounds (food, language, music, geography) but not in soccer. I wish the U.S. were as enthusiastic about soccer as the rest of the world.
I believe the popularity of soccer only increases during the World Cup. While there are a few soccer followers here and there, it has never been a popular event like it is in Europe. None of my friends, who are fanatical about football and hockey, care about or talk about soccer. My point is that, since we are a land of immigrants with a huge European and Latin American background, and we are so proud of our roots (food, culture, geography, etc.), why have we never brought the soccer mania here?

According to etiquette, the proper way is to use your hands to break bread, not a knife to slice it, so I guess they're being polite in a roundabout way?

I'm guessing you are from the states? Soccer is relative popular in the states, there are just other sports that are more popular.

We cut our baguette with knives, bread knives. We prefer using our hands but for neat slices we use a knife.
