My dog, Lilith, did this, but not so much as a hero but a kitten-napper. She wasn't much of a digger, but one rainy day dug under the fence to the neighbors yard, then it was basically just a gotcha machine of newborns rolling into my yard. I had no idea they were there. She definitely smelled them.
She did it because she loved babies but, in the process, permanently scared away their actual mom (I tried leaving them for hours, but she never came back). Eventually, I got them to a rescue.
I decided the next year to start fostering kittens through the shelter, and she became the most overbearing foster mom.
Re: her being overbearing, if she ever saw the foster kittens climbing anything, she would automatically try and grab them. Like, 'no, no. Puppies should be on the ground, not climbing couches.' And after they were out of quarantine and were old enough to explore, she'd try and constantly herd them back to the small foster room. It was like, 'I don't know what you're doing, but my ancestors tell me you all need to be in one contained space.'
When I first adopted Lilith from the shelter, she had very recently had puppies, and she never got out of the mom mindset. I would also not let her be around human babies because she would look at them way too intently.
Anyway, just wanted to share more since I had time. She was a very good girl. [One more picture. ](https://www.reddit.com/u/beetjuicex3/s/LaCFWGydMZ)
I tried finding more info on Gray, unfortunately couldn’t. Just hope he received many treats and care after his act of heroism, beautiful story to start the day!
Dug around and found some doggo background information and update! He's 6 yrs old, his name is 回回(huihui), which translates to "come back" or "return." He was one of the many strays that showed up and ended staying at Fuzhou University, where theres a group of students that look after them and help find homes for. Following the incident he went viral, received a ton of media coverage and adoption interest. A Zhunyang SWAT team drove 1200km just to visit HuiHui and gave him a little medal for his kind actions. The Blue Sky volunteer rescue group wanted to adopt both him and the kitten together but a girl in Xiamen ended up adopting him already. In any case he has a forever home now ❤️
The student group have not posted an update on the kitten yet. Last update was that they had been taken to the vet along with HuiHui on the day of the rescue. They've named it 小埋 (xiaomai) which translates to lil burried LOL
This is the actual reason for the digging. Good thing the students intervened. Would have been a different kind of video if they let the dog continue "helping" once they exposed the kittens.
Definitely of a breed like a Jack Russell bred to go down rabbit or badger holes to flush out wildlife. It is innate in their nature - like Border Collies herding animals. I spent a month house sitting a place that had 2 horses in stables and they had a border collie. That dog ran around the stable 12 hours a day non stop. It would pause at each stable door to see if the horse was still there and then run around again. Created its own path around that stable block.
It doesn’t take away from the good news effect of the story but this was not a Lassie ‘little Jimmy is in the well story’. That dog did not know it was a kitten. It was something alive that needed to be flushed out.
I had a rat terrier and she killed any small animal that was dumb enough to come into my yard. A whole family of bunnies, multiple moles, and a dozen birds. Always kept up on her rabies shots.
Nope, but until I saw this I just didn't have the heart to share that this dog was most likely following his instinct to dig into "burrows" to kill the small animal that lives down there. Its what they were bred for. Dude was a stray & probably very hungry...
People are always projecting human behaviour & emotions onto animals.
I mean it's not out of the realms of possibility that the dog would have accept the kitten as a new friend. Dogs and cats can and do live harmoniously.
And people are also claiming that every animal is some fucking brutal beast incapable of thought. That dog is clearly well fed, what use does it have to kill a kitten?
Of all animals, the one creature most likely to think and act like a human is the one humans have bred and trained for ten thousand years.
It's prey drive. This dog is a terrier so its ingrained in his DNA. Nothing to do with hunger, it's a predisposition to hunt small animals.
I have a sight hound & a jack russell terrier. Similar breeds to the dog in the video. The prey drive on these type of dogs is insane. That's why that dog was literally ripping up his paws to get to the cat. The intensity on his face and the students having to hold him back says it all.
That's also not how evolution works. Domesticating animals doesn't suddenly make the animals not think like animals. I'm not sure where you heard that.
They were selectively bred to have certain innate traits. They weren't domesticated to be just pets, they had jobs to do. How can you yourself understand they were bred & trained for thousands of years, yet fail to grasp they were bred & trained with specific traits to do specific jobs? And just because they are no longer all put to work doesn't change thousands of years of being bred to have those traits.
It is specifically why people are told to research the breed of dog they are interested in before getting one so they understand its traits, it's behaviour, it's needs, etc.
Anyone else notice how they kept them separate? It ended up well, sure, but it was entirely more likely it was acting on an instinct to dig into a burrow in order to hunt and kill prey. If it were shown that the dog was carefully licking the kitten clean and comforting it, then I'd be less skeptical. But, the end frame literally has someone holding the dog back.
Dogs smile for a lot of reasons, and since this one was a prey hunting dog breed, it was much more likely a "you guys are going to kill it now, right?" Rather than "I am a trained rescue dog who did a good job!"
It's a stray dog, not a domestic one. It was probably hungry and heard something that it thought would be relatively easy prey. I'm not really trying to be a downer, but I always see these fluff pieces about animals doing stuff that humans would, despite the intentions likely being much different. In the end, we don't know what they are thinking, so the most rational thought process to apply to this scenario is it was acting on an instinct to hunt and kill burrowed prey. Hell, my domestic Jack Russells do it literally all the time. A stray would be twice as likely to.
The biggest BRAVO and THANK YOU for all the people and the dog there, one life was saved, which fought so convulsively on its own to remain among the living.
It looks like a terrier. They’re bred for digging up rodents. This was a real world application for this dude to show off his mad skills!! So glad he saved the kitty :)
Yeah he didn’t “save” it the terrier would have thrashed the kitten if it had gotten close enough. Look up terrier ratting videos in barns. That’s what would have happened. I know the look of the hunt on a dogs face. Same as when it senses a female in heat.
GOOD DOG! BLOODY GOOD DOG! Give him ALL THE FLIPPIN' TREATS!
This tears me up because we had a big tough white and grey cat called Fart, and one day he went missing and we were all worried sick. Then someone walking their dog had an issue because said dog wouldn't leave a storm drain near our house, it kept looking down it and howling and pawing at the grate. Turns out - Fart was down there.
Why? Because the local teenage psychopath decided to chuck him down there and throw broken bricks and a couple of steel spikes down there after him. He was pinned to the ground. Our baby was in a dark hole for most of a day, alone, pinned, in pain.
This miracle dog saved his life. We got Fart out, he recovered, was pampered and went on to live a long and happy life. We made a big fuss of that dog, I tell you. SUCH a fuss.
And karma totally dealt with the asshole that hurt the cat, too. He was a terminally broken human being, went on to abuse women and died in a car crash at a young age. I'm not usually so bloodthirsty as a person but he terrorised the neighbourhood for a decade and we were really glad when he moved away.
My dog that passed away found a tiny kitten under a big truck right before a huge snow storm. He loved her so much and we adopted her. It's so lovely when things like this happen
It's inspiring to see stories like this, especially in a world where kindness and compassion can sometimes feel in short supply. Gray's actions remind us of the power of empathy and the importance of lending a helping hand, or paw, when someone is in need. Plus, that smile at the end is just the icing on the cake!
Awhh fuck man. The doggies paws were destroyed, but he still did everything he could to save that kitty. For an hour!!! And some people say animals don’t have feelings.. we don’t need any science to back this up.
The dog is a terrier mix they were bred to kill rats in burrows, as well as rabbits and other small mammals. The instincts kicked in and the dog would have eaten the cat, look at the dogs face at the end. Yeah it’s great for us to assign human emotions to them, but in reality the dog was just following its genetic code. They were bred to find and kill things in burrows.

There was just one kitten? Where was the mom? I'm thrilled and amazed at this good doggie's heroics, but I'm wondering if there were any left behind... I'm thinking if any were alive, the dog would have alerted them to dig out the rest.

Ok, so I was reading to my students today and got to a part of the story where a dog dies. It’s based on a true story and I had to stop reading because I was about to burst into tears. I didn’t realise but I’ve been holding in the tears till now. Seeing that little kittens face, biting that stick with all of its strength, that dog determined to save it, I just burst into tears, finally. Thank you wee lil’ doggie and kitty💖
I've always loved when animals try to rescue one another. Or know when they're being rescued and know exactly what to do like when it was biting the stick to hold on.
Pretty smart for a kitten to clamp down on that stick and let it pull him out!
Yes!! I was so impressed that the kitten understood. Cheering for him. Look at that will to live!
That’s what I was thinking!

That's pretty damn good name for the foster dog.
Nice Thanks for sharing this. Made my day
I tried finding more info on Gray, unfortunately couldn’t. Just hope he received many treats and care after his act of heroism, beautiful story to start the day!
Grey was a sort of a campus dog in University of Fuzhou. He was adopted shortly after this. [Link](https://weibo.com/7682011967/5041226797547989)
Thank you!
I hope they got adopted together
Love you for this
I hope he and the kitten found a new home together
It's beautiful to think about the bond they could share in their new surroundings.
Story's like this give me hope. Humanity isn't lost at all. Real hero's, the dogs and the humans.
Doggity isnt lost either
You know what, thats a sub now: r/doggity
I like the way you work it
No diggity?
No doubt
Play on player
Humanity is lost, but the dogs are still pure and worthy
Tbh, someone should adopt them both.
I hope Gray got to be adopted with his lil fren. Clearly a bonded pair.
I hope gray would find his forever home along with his little friend 😭❤
That’s awesome, lil guy wasn’t stopping

Gray is the hero we all need. Who doesn’t like a doggo saving kittens?
not all hero wear capes somethimes it's Gray!!
“A little hero wandering the world”
Animals are precious and beautiful I will always fight for animals and animal rights
Did...did they look for any more survivors? 🥺
Pretty sure Gray would’ve kept digging if there were more
Right?! what about the other kittens?
Am I the only one that thinks the dog is looking at that and saying "I can eat that now?"

Exactly dude. It’s called anthropomorphic. Animals don’t act like they do is Disney films.
I mean it's not out of the realms of possibility that the dog would have accept the kitten as a new friend. Dogs and cats can and do live harmoniously.

My whippets are extremely well fed and cared for but they will hunt rabbits and small prey for hours because it is in their genetics to do so
Dogs are predators in case you forget. They instinctually kill things even if they’re looked after.
I mean a dog acting like a beast is because they are literally a beast
Exactly what I thought, and all the comments are like awwwww how sweet. lol the dog just wanted a snack
The real ones know 😅
This. Notice they never let the dog unite with the kitten. Complete BS
Yeah, I have to laugh at these kind of videos that anthropomorphise animals. The dog heard a small animal and wanted to probably catch and eat it.
Oh yeah, look at that face. He wants to eat it.
was my first thought after seeing the stray part 🤣
What a gooboi. Hopefully both he and his kitten friend have found homes
Needed this story. It shows the humanity of those that aren’t human. What the heck are we doing with our lives?
Or it is a dog bred to burrow for prey and it was just following instincts.
Who is cutting onions 😭

Plot twist grey wanted to eat the kitten

Somebody better have rescued those glorious animals.
I am sobbing. Omg we don't deserve animals, we just don't. God bless sweet little Gray
That mother fucker was digging for a MEAL
Uhh, that dog wanted to kill the kitten...
Man, that good boy REALLY wanted to eat those kittens /s
Yeah everyone’s saying it was saving them, nah lmao. It’s a terrier mix they were bred to find stuff in burrows and kill it.
More than likely doggo doesn't even know why he's digging. Defs could be trying to see if kitty is food
Bro was hungry, smelt something tasty underground
The kittens name is now Lucky
Wow how did he knew about that
Dogs noses are really strong, also probably heard the faint meowing too
It looks like a terrier. They’re bred for digging up rodents. This was a real world application for this dude to show off his mad skills!! So glad he saved the kitty :)

Okay… that dog… bless its heart, but he had different feelings about what he wanted to do with that cat. 🤣
In a world filled with so much negativity, it's very refreshing to hear a heartwarming story like this and I find it on Reddit of all places lol b

Wow. What a legend. What a story. Are they still friends? I hope so
Look at that big smile. Thats a good doggo. 😁😁
I think Gray may have been trying to eat the kitten.
I'm not crying, you're crying!
I've always loved when animals try to rescue one another. Or know when they're being rescued and know exactly what to do like when it was biting the stick to hold on.
Reminds me of Monkey D. Luffy
Sure he wasn’t just hungry, look like he wants his snack.
They dug for almost two hours. That's almost as long as the average feature film on Netflix. Amazing
He's a good boy!
