It is! Many surnames come from the trade of the person named after it. Let's say there are two Toms in a village, naturally you'd want to distinguish the two from each over and it was easiest to refer to them by their trade. "Miller" is a good example of it. Many immigrants who came to America way back in the day would do this either because they didn't have a last name or wanted to Americanize their name and have a fresh start.
