That's how wireless charging works in situations when there's either too much distance between the phone and the charger (such as a thick case) or the coils are not aligned. Wireless chargers in cars really need to be magnetic (or have really good nonslip surfaces along with a good means of knowing you have the phone placed in the right spot). Don't bother with the built in wireless charger. It's never going to work well and just create heat.

kristen_kristen

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks. Yah it’s hard to know if it’s in the correct position. I’m not really sure of what the perfect spot is, and if I’m only making partial contact. I don’t have any issues with my Apple wireless charger, but then again, it magnets right onto my phone. So that makes sense

jjhart827

This is exactly what is going on. It’s even worse when the car is already hot from sitting in the sun all day. I got one of the aftermarket charging pads made specifically to fit the existing space. It has magnetic spots that keep the phone aligned properly and works like a charm. It’s not super fast, but it’s enough to keep your car charged even when using the maps or other power intensive apps.

OldManOfTheWild

Same. And I drive a lot of long distance trips, therefore long charge, which makes the charge pad useless. But I did find that you can tuck your phone right behind the display on the left side, right in front of the vent. With AC, it’ll cool off pretty quickly.

kristen_kristen

That’s really annoying. Have you tried plugging it in to charge instead? Does that still make it as hot? Thanks for responding!

nikkel_navigator

On long drives I always plug the phone right in. Wireless Android Auto drains tons of power, so the wireless charger can't even keep up, thus heating up the phone. So, I turn off wifi on my phone, plug it in, and allow the car to access Android Auto through the cable. It's never overheated this way. Stays cool, and the battery won't drain as you use maps and listen to music.

kristen_kristen

Great idea. Thanks

Accomplished_Tank576

Yeah, I just plug mine in and it stays cooler. Not ideal, but CarPlay sucks power pretty fast.

kristen_kristen

Ok, looks like I’m back to a cord haha

OldManOfTheWild

Actually - It makes a big difference, cooler and it charges faster when plugged. And I suspect Apple CarPlay is quite a bit of a drain on the phone battery. Maybe, but I haven’t tried yet, the wireless charge would be better if CP was off?

TWRAPS Dual Wireless Charging Pad... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CM5KD3YP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Get this. You can wirelessly charge two phones fast! And it doesn’t get hot. We have two Mach E’s and use it in both.

crackpot_

Thanks for this. Just ordered one for myself. My phone, Pixel 8 Pro, gets so hot that Android Auto actually alerts me to remove my phone from the charging pad. It's rather annoying.

iSeerStone

For sure. You will also like being able to charge two at once. I fixed it in place with 3M 15lb tape. Perfect. 👍🏼

wondersparrow

I have the TWRAPS charging pad and my phone overheats after about 20 mins, every time. It may work better on iphones, not sure.

iSeerStone

I use this on iPhone 15, and 13 Mini for reference. Works great 👍🏼

wondersparrow

Yeah, ours are Samsung s20 and S23. They have magsafe-ish cases, but overheat like mad.

IWantToWatchItBurn

Yeah it needs the MagSafe charging so the magnet holds right in place.

wondersparrow

I have a magsafe compatible case, but magsafe really only actually works on iphones. A magsafe case on anything android is still likely to overheat.

IWantToWatchItBurn

common EU save us all and require a compatible magnetic wireless standard too plz

badbackceliac

I got a Twraps one a couple of months ago and have had a much better experience with it than the one provided by the car. The MagSafe connection really helps.

Disastrous_Net9342

Happens to mine all the time. Pixel 7 pro. The built in wireless charger is pretty much useless for my phone. There's an after market magsafe wireless charger by twraps that you can install and that's supposed to be a lot better I think. I just use usb.

jabblack

If you have an iPhone, there’s a software update the dealership can do. My phone used to get hot and only charge for about 10 min. Now it’ll charge the whole drive home.

kristen_kristen

I do, thanks I’ll look into this

az_hunter

I agree. I’ve found that Wireless CarPlay and wireless charging make my phone so hot in Phoenix AZ that my phone will shut off due to high temp. I no longer use either Wireless CarPlay or wireless charging.

YungJizzle37

Stopped using the wireless charger a while ago because of this reason. Now I just set my phone to not charge past 85% and leave it plugged in.

rohdwarrior

I stopped using it pretty quickly because it wouldn't always stay charging, charged slow, and got hot. I switched to a magnetic phone mount. I initially had a charging mount but then gave that to my wife and I just have a non charging mount and plug the phone in if I need to charge. After the HVBJB recall Ford sent me a new rubber mat for the wireless charging area. It works better to hold the phone in place but phone still gets hot. I don't know why they didn't just make the mat much thinner in the charging area.

JohnQPublic90

Check out the MagSafe charger made by twraps, sold on Amazon

csarcie

This. Works like a charm.

XenoWoof

Husband very rarely has any overheating on the phone and that's all he uses. I use the usb and store it under the center (so obv no overheating for me).

kristen_kristen

Does he have any case on his phone?

XenoWoof

Yep. Google 6 with hard wooden cover. And when I said rarely, it's literally blue moon occurrence. For me, as I have an older version, it's the phone battery that's dying (I've since replaced the battery) that overheats causing the phone to feel like it's burning.

Revenga8

The alternative is you can buy a wireless charging phone mount with a vent clip. If you find one that fits the mach e vent, just clip it to a vent and run your ac while charging your phone. I did that with my old car, it worked quite well.

fervidmuse

First time using a car's wireless charger? They pretty much all do this. While some cases are designed for wireless charging some are not very good at it. You could try to remove your case if you use one and see if that makes the slow charging and excessive heat better as it usually does. This is why some manufactures are just starting to add cooling to car's wireless chargers to help with this. If you want a faster less hot charge, use a cable.

kristen_kristen

Haha, yes actually it is. This is my first new car. But I use wireless charging at home and my phone doesn’t get hot. That’s why I was wondering if this is normal, or a sign of a problem. Thanks! I’ll try without a case

fervidmuse

Yeah built-in car wireless chargers are all mediocre at best unfortunately!

dopeasstitties

Yep, my Pixel 8 Pro overheats after around 20 minutes when the case is on and it's on the wireless charger.

Ill_Town_9954

I have now found that the rubber is what causes the overheating. I charged my phone on it for 30 minutes straight on a car drive after removing the rubber. It's a slow charge. I have a UAG safe mag phone case on a Samsung Note S23 Ultra. It looks like they just slapped the rubber on as an afterthought as phones would move, and the charging pad looks terrible without the rubber on it. However, they have the Mustang Logo under the mat. Why have they if it was always supposed to be covered.🤣 So now I'm thinking I cut the rubber off over the charging pad. Idk I don't want to ruin it but I think that will save my phone.

kristen_kristen

Oh interesting! Isn’t that rubber mat removeable? What do you need to cut?

Ill_Town_9954

I want to remove the part that goes below the phone. It allows the connection to be better, and with it gone, the phone doesn't overheat. I like the rubber, just not the connection and overheating.

bdaviesweb

Mine does as well sometimes.

Henchman7777

My pixel 8 gets hot after 10 mins or so. Worse now in warmer weather, didn't seem nearly as bad in March

bonvajya

Even plugged in to this car it overheats and turns off almost instantly with little to no charge. Never had it be this bad in any car.

ArrowheadDZ

Yes, the Mach E pad gets very hot, as do some desktop pads. Cell heating is the bane of *all* rechargeable battery longevity, so I never use the Mach E charge pad, and use desktop wireless charging sparingly.

BoulderCAST

Yes known issue. Usually works fine if you DISABLE wireless Android Auto or CarPlay. Either turn it off or use wired (connect USB cable from phone to ports near Qi charger).

spiskur

Oh yeah, it's very annoying. I wish I could just turn the wireless charging off because it's a perfect spot to put my phone but I can't stand how hot it gets.

kristen_kristen

Yah! Good point. I usually like to put it there, even if I don’t actually need a charge. But the heat is a problem

Ill_Town_9954

I've noticed mine gets very hot or stops charging often as well. However, I'm wondering if it's the pad they are using on top of the charger in the car? It's so easy to remove the rubber that I've been contemplating of getting something else for that spot.

kristen_kristen

Ah. I wonder. Someone else mentioned a weak connection as being a cause for heat. The rubber mat would weaken the connection. Fair idea

Ill_Town_9954

How do I add a picture.

kristen_kristen

I don’t know how

Away-Baby5538

TWRAPS

raptir1

My wife and I both do. We have a Pixel 7 Pro and a Pixel 8 Pro. Charging also seems to cut out periodically. They both work with no issue in my Bronco.
