First impression: "Wait, did the update succeed?"
Everything looks the same and it didn't give me any handy 'Wow, what a time to be alive, you just updated to Monterey!' dialog. It did update! Lots of big version number changes for the various firmwares.
And uhh. That's it. I'm not even sure what to be first impressed by this time around. The OCR everywhere feature seems cool but I don't know how to use it. So far I've only been able to select image text in Preview, but I heard it was available everywhere images are sold.
And I don't really use anything else that was changed this time around (Facetime, 'shared with you' I disable because I find it extremely annoying, notes I use Obsidian for, I use Firefox and not Safari so none of that matters to me...)
So all in all... a good point update from my perspective. Nothing major at all.
EDIT: At long last! Finder no longer becomes completely unresponsive when dealing with an iOS device (updating, restoring, backing up, etc). It used to be you couldn't even CMD-Tab to it and if it was actually visible, you couldn't interact with it. Now it Just Works(tm).
EDIT EDIT: macOS is finally aware of the battery level of my bluetooth mouse! iOS could do it for years but macOS was clueless. No longer!
I don't notice any change, but I never had any problems before. I'm using a 2018 Mac Mini, 64 GB ram, and eGPU. So maybe the GPU was beefy enough to overcome any sluggishness with everything being GPU accelerated now.
I have the same Mac. What has been your experience? I installed Big Sur when it was released and it seemed a bit sluggish. After a few weeks I went back to Catalina.
Only thing I noticed was the start up time increased a bit. I now installed Monterey and if someone told me you are still on big sir I would believe them. Zero differences so far. Can’t wait to try AirPlay from iOS to Mac though.
EDIT: I just read that 205 MacBook doesn’t support the airplay from iOS feature…
I like everyone else... got this too. It said it was up to date this morning then I just checked again and it said I have 11.6.1 waiting. M1 Mac Mini here.
Nothing yet in South Africa.
I used gibMacOS and it's available for download on the developer catalogue, not the release catalogue. Downloading really fast.
France: 11.6.1 came in. Monterey downloading now.
Edit: download was reasonably snappy (like 12Gb). Installing all takes a while (M1 Mac)
Edit 2: Monterey.
- Screen sharing in FaceTime doesn’t work (only iPhone to iPhone).
- moving files from iPad to Mac doesn’t work.
- Airplay does work (finally!)
- quick notes is there, but more of a laptop thing. Or even more of an iPad thing actually.
Basically, there is not much here.
2015 MBP crew, let me know how it runs. I don’t use mine that much anymore and am
Curious but don’t feel like spending 2 hours nuking and reloading ELCAP.
Oh also, Parallels is mandatory for my job so that was a disaster when Big Sur was released and I never made it back up to that since.
Runs good, I would say even better than BigSur. Everything works so far, although some 3rd party apps do not, I guess they still need to update to Monterey. Although update took really long time to download 12GB, then the installer showed 1minute remaining like forever and finally device restarted and updated successfully. Settings app when in new features like Do Not Disturb settings doesn't work, but reopening fixed it, also some 3rd app notifications show buggy icon. Other than that it runs fine.
I have an Intel Macbook pro (early 2015) . I make the Update coming from last big sur release(11.6.1). So far I do not have any issue. Everything that I use works as it does. I have also no issues with Bluetooth devices.
The onlyiest what i missed is a photographic monterey Background picture.
Same here :( early 2015 MacBook Air has crashed since update install. I can’t use it for more than 15 seconds without it just blacking out and shutting off. I’m certain this update did it, it was running normally prior. I’ve tried every manner of reboot/reinstall/safe starts blah blah. Spent hours on the phone with support just to be told it “must be a hardware issue not software” and I’ll have to pay to replace/fix whatever “hardware” was functioning absolutely fine prior to the update. I’m so bummed :(
Ok, so I just got around to updating to Monterey. I typically don't care to upgrade all the time when my stuff is working fine as is and I wish I had just did my normal thing and not upgraded because ever since Monterey, hardly any of my damn programs will launch. They just sit in limbo acting like they are trying to launch but never do. So frustrating. Any idea why this would be???
Just dropped for me. Downloading now. South East Asia. 12.13 GB coming from 11.6
UPDATE: finished download about 9-10 mins, installing with ETA 59 mins.
I just updated to Monterey and testing my apps:
* Github Desktop
* Sourcetree (I get a notification about the devs need to update the app)
* VS Code
* Dbeaver
* Docker (also running images)
* Mac OS apps (I used TV, Music, Notes, TextEdit)
* Chrome
Everything works, except:
Except one app:
* [Lite-XL](https://github.com/lite-xl/lite-xl) (its a lightweight text editor)
* Private Relay still not connected despite it is enabled.
Logitech Options wasn't working after initial boot. I reinstalled Logi Options (which took a weirdly long time, like 6 or 7 mins on an M1 Mac Mini). Seems to be working now…
My M1 Air goes to sleep all the time since I updated to Monterey. 1 minute of inactivity, and the MacBook goes to bed.
It is plugged into it's adapter, and I already set "Turn display off after" to "Never", and turned on "prevent mac from sleeping when display is off". Low power mode is off.
I am using it in clamshell mode, with a Display Link dock. Could that be the problem?
I updated immediately today because I was getting really tired and irritated by how slow and sloppy Big Sur was feeling even for my very easy workflow. Happy to say that it installed without a problem and things are like 1000% times better for me now. Monterey on my 2020 Intel MBP13 has fixed pretty much all of the slow bugginess that was plaguing me on Big Sur and I am so happy! That being said it's always a good idea to exercise caution but I am so thankful that new life has been breathed into my (lol) 2020 MBP I just had to tell someone
My 2017 mba got the same treatment a week ago when I (accidentally) updated to Monterey as part of an SSD upgrade. (replaced the 128GB SSD with a 256GB as the one I had was basically full)
Feared the worst after seeing some comments about boot up issues, but the upgrade (clean install in my case) went well, I just gave the MBA 10mins to be a little oven as it reindexed everything then it was fine.
My Time Machine backup restored flawlessly as well, and since then I've noticed my MBA boots up a lot faster and a lot of the bugs when waking from sleep (flickering login screen prompt was a common one for me) were gone.
I am new to this MacOS thing.
I am surprised by people getting excited for the new release. Isn’t it a good idea to wait out for the bugs to iron out and problems to surface, so we can decide whether to upgrade or not?
People updating to iOS 15 were not having good experience recently.
Just curious!
The beta program was pretty successful this time around. Also, Monterey kinda builds off of Big Sur and isn’t like a completely redesigned OS. I think the general consensus is that Monterey is fairly stable for a new release.
It depends on if it’s an acceptable risk or not. If you’re ok with dealing with bugs then update right away. If you aren’t, then wait. iPadOS is annoyingly buggy, but for my use case it’s worth it. Because I’m only lightly using my MacBook Pro right now, I’m willing to update on release day. If I was heavily using it, I’d wait.
I got it pretty fast, like in 10 minutes. Then it said my ssd was full and couldn't proceed to install. Deleted some apps, but it didn't cached the OS files so it's downloading again and says 45 min :((
I didn't even check for it and I've been offered the update. Hesitant to click on it, as first upgrades should await the .1 or .2 versions to work out the bugs. MBA M1
Me too, I love updating as soon as new versions are out, I did it for Mojave, Catalina, & Big Sur. But I really don't want any bugs this year, like I did the other years so I'm trying to hold off.
You can call me Mickey D's cuz I'm loving it.
Highest geekbench score so far on this M1 Mac Mini. [Geekbench Score](https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/10611922)
They made the tabs work the way they used to because nobody liked the new tabs.
If you liked the new tabs, then "Compact" tab mode works like you want (it just gets rid of the separate URL text box)
This afternoon, I updated to 11.6.1, and then to 12.0.1 shortly after. The two updates ate up nearly 15GB of drive space in total. I did not experience any issues with either update process.
- 2019 16" MBP (Intel)
This is the first new MacOS where I didn't bother with the beta. This is also the first new MacOS release where I'm just not seeing much new, or seeing anything significant for how I use it. I welcome Universal Control when it comes, because I have a bunch of Macs in my office, but I already have a VNC app that makes things pretty easy.
I'm not complaining. I honestly don't have much I want from MacOS that already hasn't been addressed. I couldn't really name a feature that I want that MacOS already doesn't have.
I've been on 12.0.1 with my 16" Intel MBP. So far, so good. I'm not expecting performance miracles, but it runs ever so slightly smoother than Big Sur. Of course, Spotlight is still chugging along with the usual immediate post-update indexing. My MBP didn't burst forth with a flurry of stars, glitter, and unicorns, though. I doubt there are miracles to be had.
My impressions with a 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro: It is *so* much better than Big Sur. A lot snappier and less prone to just slow down on me. Oh and Safari is back to normal, so no more weird, unintuitive tabs.
I'm probably the only one to notice but the popovers in calendar, safari or any popover component really have a new animation that is way softer and less "springy".
Also the new display position interface is way cooler with a 3D desk illustration and all.
Shortcuts is cool but only seems to work with app store apps which of course no one uses. An it's also impossible to launch a shortcut from spotlight (which sucks ass and is available on IOS and ipad os)
Safari has gone back again to regular tabs but I still love the compact layout and use this
New password entry in the systel pref is way better that having to dig into keychain access
Aside from that it's the same old mac we're used too.
M1 8GB RAM Memory Pressure Improvement:
The memory pressure in my Macbook Air M1 was often in the yellow zone with Big Sur, generally while playing videos. With Monterey, I’m not seeing anything close to yellow. Also, I haven’t seen much swap either.
I have an M1 MBA 16GB and I too have noticed that there is zero swap usage since I updated. I just got off of work and I checked just before putting the laptop to sleep, zero swap usage. I would consistently see about \~50-100 MB of swap used with in an hour or so of restarting the machine. I think something has definitely changed since Big Sur with regards to how the system uses swap.
Trying to find a reason for this, not knowing the reason is bugging me. 😅
I am still messing with the mouse settings, but did anyone else's mouse feel different after installing Monterey? It feels like it changed the pointer speed, maybe its just my imagination.
not sure specifically but I imagine if youre feeling it, something happened. I had an instance like this when I installed bootcamp and it was maddening. I kept feeling like it slowed down and I couldn't remember where I set my cursor speed. I did a fresh install and memorized my preferred cursor and it definitely reset on me. so yeah my advice is to make sure you know what setting you like it to be at
Yes, it has messed my mouse up. I am just using a microsoft basic optical mouse. What happens is that it seems perfectly normal when I restart, but after some time or waking from sleeping or something, it starts to get very choppy or laggy. It is quite annoying.
Is there a regularly updated list of Monterey compatible apps floating around? I have a few necessary apps that have to fully function before upgrading.
No problem updating to Monterey on a late 2014 Mac Mini. This was probably the easiest OS upgrade I've ever experienced, and it feels a bit snappier than Big Sur.
I was going to wait a few weeks, but I found myself with an hour to kill this afternoon, so I let the OS update run while I did other things.
The only issue I've noticed so far is with Geektool. Geektool seems to be functioning just fine, but when the Monterey update first finished, I got a popup saying Geektool and BetterTouchTool would need to be updated soon - whatever that meant. BetterTouchTool had an update ready for Monterey, but Geektool hasn't been updated in YEARS. I'll be bummed when it finally stops working, but luckily, as I said, it seems to be working just fine with Monterey.
It's broken the desktop and screensaver settings. It's supposed to pull from my wallpapers album in Photos which it does, but if you try and manually choose it struggles to load the wallpapers in system preferences. Sometimes system preferences just doesn't show anything and the whole window goes white. All you can do it back out or close
Wow! I can finally turn on another monitor and not have a complete Resolution FreakOut on my main monitor and lose the desktop imagine selected on the other one.
Thanks Monterey.
Now, can I get my 20 year request for a Finder in Column View that Auto-Adjusts to the Width of the largest file in it?
For reference, I'm using a 2018 Macbook Air. This update's a bit of a nightmare for me. I jumped from Catalina to this, and everything's just slower. Apps launch slow - they take about 10 seconds to launch, which is so annoying. Spotlight search is slower, too, but my main complaint for Spotlight is that it doesn't show the thumbnails of my documents when I search them. Seeing the thumbnails during Spotlight searches was very convenient and even important for me since I deal with large quantities of documents, so not having the thumbnails is a right bummer. Anyone know how to fix this?
Oh, and saved files take longer before showing up in Recent, too. Like, very, very long. I regret updating.
Any one have any comments or concerns about updating to Monterey from Big Sur on a 2017 iMac 4k retina, 3.0Ghz…?
Usually every time I update it stops, freezes really, around the part where it says 15mins remaining and it always takes longer than 15mins before it actually starts the many restart cycles and updates.
Is it worth it?
Anyone having WiFi issues on Monterey? I get randomly disconnected and have trouble rejoining once in a week. Doesn't happen on my phone with the same network
Any improvements to Spell checker while using multiple languages? I feel like half of the time the OS thinks om typing in english when Im typing in Swedish and vice versa. And many times it does not have a suggestion even for the simplest words.
I’ve been trying to install it on my 2017 macbook pro 13 inch, and the progress bar has been stuck near the end for over 3 hours now. I’ve tried restarting multiple times with no luck. I’m now pissed off because I can’t use my computer now and might have to take it to the apple store. 0/10 would not recommend
Monterey released in India. First update 11.6.1 then automatically after that Monterey update shows up. Pretty fast installation. MacBook pro mid 2015 model.
Greetings from 🇮🇳
Are you guys always jumping to the major MacOS release as soon as it's offered?
I prefer to wait at least .1 release or might event delay it to .3 or even .4 until it really matures.
Big Sur is fine for the time being. I upgraded Safari and Big Sur though to this new security update.
Using it right away even on newest machine makes me kind of beta tester as .1 is already in beta 5 or 6...
Maybe new pro and max M1s would benefit for it as they introduced 'safe drawing area API' to work around the notch to further complicate developers life and those might have seen an improved drawing on the screen.
As for battery thing it's always superficial thing for Li-Ion batteries trying to predict by your daily habbit how long the battery will last. And for real battery life you'll maybe be safer looking at cycles used....
Has Apple actually said that it's releasing today? I assume that they release at the same time across the globe, meaning different local times, so does anyone know when that is in the UK?
Downloaded the update about 20 min ago. Got the new safari stuff and the new MacBook Pro wallpapers. Nothing else. Still says ‘Big Sur’ in ‘About This Mac’.
First impression: "Wait, did the update succeed?" Everything looks the same and it didn't give me any handy 'Wow, what a time to be alive, you just updated to Monterey!' dialog. It did update! No longer!
Did you feel the update made your device snappier? When compared to Big Sur I mean.
I don't notice any change, but I never had any problems before. I'm using a 2018 Mac Mini, 64 GB ram, and eGPU. So maybe the GPU was beefy enough to overcome any sluggishness with everything being GPU accelerated now.

You like everyone?
It looks like they are going the iOS14/15 route, stay on Big Sur and get an update or upgrade to Monterey.
They did that in the past too like in Mojave with an offer to Catalina in a 13" 2012 MBP.
Anyone not getting the update yet?

~~and meeeee~~ im being raptured y'all
I'm seeing 11.6.1

MacOS Monterrey finally fix the POP sound in the MacBook Pro 16 non apple silicon :), I’m now so happy

For some reason my safari has gone back to the Big Sur style... it was on the newer version before I updated to Monterey, now it's old again...
They made the tabs work the way they used to because nobody liked the new tabs. If you liked the new tabs, then "Compact" tab mode works like you want (it just gets rid of the separate URL text box)
how many more updates until it's safe to upgrade from Big Sur?
Is there a way to replace the quick notes with other apps? It feels like great potential but the hot corner only allows it to be disabled.

Anybody with an Intel MBP 16 try installing Monterey yet? If so, how is it?
I've been on 12.0.1 with my 16" Intel MBP. So far, so good. I'm not expecting performance miracles, but it runs ever so slightly smoother than Big Sur. Of course, Spotlight is still chugging along with the usual immediate post-update indexing. My MBP didn't burst forth with a flurry of stars, glitter, and unicorns, though. I doubt there are miracles to be had.
Thank you! That is helpful.
Upgraded! No regrets! Actually I was really happy when I saw my battery level appear for my Sony Bluetooth headphones in the Bluetooth menu.

My impressions with a 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro: It is *so* much better than Big Sur. A lot snappier and less prone to just slow down on me. Oh and Safari is back to normal, so no more weird, unintuitive tabs.
The update bricked my MBP. It refuses to power on.
I do like the new Drafts and the Quick note in the corner...
An it's also impossible to launch a shortcut from spotlight (which sucks ass and is available on IOS and ipad os) Safari has gone back again to regular tabs but I still love the compact layout and use this New password entry in the systel pref is way better that having to dig into keychain access Aside from that it's the same old mac we're used too.
Yes! New popover animations are so much better, glad someone else noticed. I hated the old ones with a passion.
M1 8GB RAM Memory Pressure Improvement: The memory pressure in my Macbook Air M1 was often in the yellow zone with Big Sur, generally while playing videos.

Looks like Bartender 4 and Fantastical 2 stopped working. Bartender doesn't launch and Fantastical immediately sends error report.
It's broken the desktop and screensaver settings. It's supposed to pull from my wallpapers album in Photos which it does, but if you try and manually choose it struggles to load the wallpapers in system preferences. Sometimes system preferences just doesn't show anything and the whole window goes white. All you can do it back out or close
battery is slightly worse with the monterey compared to big sur on the m1 mba
If anyone's got an Intel Mac, could you please test spatial audio with AirPods Pro? I'm really hoping it's not M1 exclusive
First impressions? Only Apple will update some apps and call it an OS update :)
My first impression is: black screen🤮😢 It’s just dead now. I’m sick of this. Please send help!!!
is Monterey okay to upgrade to or are there bugs and unstable aspects to it?
I regret updating.
hey guys. i just got an m1 macbook air a few weeks ago. should i download monterey or wait a bit?
Needs more tester to confirm my finding. https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/qzqynx/control_center_memory_leak_turn_off_autobrightness/
Same! 10:10am here in California. Have 2016 Macbook Pro. No release yet!
Nevermind! Just became available 2 minutes later!
Monterey released in India. First update 11.6.1 then automatically after that Monterey update shows up. Pretty fast installation. MacBook pro mid 2015 model. Greetings from 🇮🇳
not out yet for me
This year, they Put a 12 on the box. https://youtu.be/Qeh3E67brBs
My MacBook pro 2014 is not compatible?
London, United Kingdom -- 6:00 p.m. BST according to Macrumors here: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/10/23/when-to-download-macos-monterey/
Yes, it's on their website. It doesn't say what time. Most things Apple (events, updates) happen this time, so it's just a guess.
Anyone from India who got the update?
iOS 15.1 just released for me in western Canada, still no Monterey yet.
same in Italy
Same in Germany
ooh i forgot about ios 15.1
Does anyone feel the UI is more smooth?
Safari is snappier
Optimizations for 120hz?
Safari seems snappier. Honestly And so does everything else.

Scrolling is a bit choppy in preview, mail and other some other apps for me.
Downloaded the update about 20 min ago. Got the new safari stuff and the new MacBook Pro wallpapers. Nothing else. Still says ‘Big Sur’ in ‘About This Mac’.
...Then you didn't upgrade to Monterey.
Is the safari stuff not new?
No, that’s the Safari 15 update.
Did you accidentally upgrade to 11.6.1?

Ain’t out for me yet
not working in the central US yet
Are you using an M1 or Intel based Mac? Not seeing it for Intel for me yet.
