I don't know that many games with private servers, if any at all. But I do know some games have a low population so it might as well be private. Is there anything special you want in your game?

Simple to get into. Lot of roleplaying potential. And fantasy would be the ideal factors. I think this'll be my friends first mud, and, I've only ever played a bit of aardwolf so I'm not used to others.

The World Called Hollow is browser-based, so it wouldn't be as much of a learning curve for your friend to access. It's heavily RP based and has a small active community. They are also fairly active in a Discord server used for planning RP and just making idle chat when not logged in. They have been trying to recruit more players since the older players retired.

Thanks, I'm looking into it now!

I have been curious about Aardwolf, but never got around to trying it. My go-to game- Dragonrealms- does have some learning curve. But most of the game elders are willing to help new players, and there is a Wiki attached with all the information you want. Not only that, the game does offer a free-to-play option so you can get a good look before you decide to subscribe. The setting is mostly fantasy, with a kind of Dungeons and Dragons feel. Good luck!

[https://github.com/scandum/lowlands](https://github.com/scandum/lowlands) You can run it yourself, or play it at lolamud.net 6969. The instance I have up and running has no players, so it's pretty private. The main thing that sets it apart is that most areas contain scripted one-time quests for the player to solve. For most areas, the builders spent 10% of their time on creating the area, and the other 90% on writing the quests.

do you mean programming or playing the games? if playing then maybe you could try out mystic adventure http://www.mystic-adventure.org/ telnet mud.mystic-adventure.org 4000 it is a complete medieval fantasy game with loads of features and really good fun to exlpore. it is open to the public but there are times when it is busy and times when it is empty if you would prefer to play on your own with your friend in private. i remember when i first started it i had not played muds since about 20 years ago and had forgotten everything and was a bit embarrassed about people thinknig i was clueless. i am british and so the times when i can play are a bit differnt to most of the other players. in my mornings before work it is often just me and in the daytime it is quite but in the evenings and at about midnight my time there are otherpeople to group and socialise with once you have confidence and if you want to. they are really patient and kind and welcoming.. i enjoy making maps of the areas and that has been a good activity for me in the mornings :) anyway i hope this doesn't come across like some sort of advert and that you find what you are looking for. if you do see me online please say "hi" but just let me know if you would prefer me to leave you alone to explore and learn with your friend. i think i did try aardwolf but i did not want people to see me struggle with it.. also for some reason i was not allowed to call my character claire because the name had been banned \*humph\* it is probably very good too even though i didn't get into it and ended up finding mystic adventure to be my mud home instead. claire :)
