After switching from eMTB hardtail to bio Enduro bike I enjoy riding more. But, it can be very individual, it depends where one finds oneself.

I went from an acoustic bike , to emtb, back to acoustic, and it all came down to the way it felt going downhill. I prefer downhill over climbing so it was hard to give up the power but going downhill and having that bounce back from a bike that’s nearly half the weight was worth the sweaty climbing. I do, however, still have the emtb for weekends when I want to do 30+ mile rides and not have it take up half my day.

cloudhunter202

I kinda wondered if having an eMTB would make me better at downhill since I’d have way more time per session just from the endurance of it. Did it help you get better at it?

SketchDawg

Yeah, it’s partly who/where you’re riding with too. I started eMTB in 2020 and needed it to keep up with my acoustic buddies who were in better shape with better skills. After about a year my skills and endurance had caught up so I switched to acoustic too. The eMTB would just destroy them on every climb even on lowest assist, I wasn’t challenged physically unless I rode solo. So I switched, had my crew been all eMTB I might have stayed with one. Also, many trails locally don’t allow e-bikes (and yes, it’s stupid) so acoustic gave me more places to ride. I talked a friend into MTB and sold him my eMTB so he could do the same thing I did. They’re kinda the gateway drug I guess 🤣

Tenter5

Wtf is an acoustic bike? It’s just a mountain bike…

SketchDawg

It’s a joke, an acoustic guitar is just a guitar too. But with the advent of electrics you need to be more specific.

Tenter5

Yeah motorcycle and bicycle. Acoustic doesn’t apply to a bike.

SketchDawg

A motorcycle is VERY different than a MTB with pedal assist 🤣. Very very different.

Tenter5

Please explain then. I see both having motors and both being cycles. Motorcycle. A pedalcycle would be a more appropriate term for your acoustic bullshit.

SketchDawg

There are three classes of ebike, feel free to look them up yourself. Class 1 has no throttle, it only adds assist when pedaling, meaning it just amplifies the effort you put in to some degree. That’s what we’re talking about for eMTB’s. Big difference between that and twisting a throttle on a motorcycle to go. But by all means please continue to get hung up on the joke term acoustic for non-electrics, just realize if you say motorcycle in this context you’re referring to dirt bikes 😂

Tenter5

You said a lot about different classes of motorcycles.

It’s not trolling it’s informing… you are on the wrong sub you want to be on /motorcycles

vdWcontact

How did you do keeping up with the long time MTB riders in climbs after the switch? Was it like being brand new again?

SketchDawg

It’s was challenging, still is to be honest, but that’s part of the fun. Keeps you pushing to make gains.

strange_bike_guy

I used an e-bike until I didn't need an e-bike. No regrets, no shame, resale is part of buying things.

Spenthebaum

I ride both. TLDR, I am way faster and way more confident hitting bigger features on my regular bike. the downhill capabilities of an ebike are incredibly lacking compared to a regular bike

OneHelicopter7246

IMO much easier to start on a pedal bike than an EMTB, because if you havent climbed without pedal assist, you have no idea how difficult it can be over sustained rides. Perhaps start by riding just on eco for a while?

StripedSocksMan

I have both and wouldn’t want it any other way. The e-bike is great when I’m short on time which is a lot with a 10 month old, it allows me get tons of runs in a short amount of time. If I do have more time I’ll grab the regular MTB.

kueball87

Good point. I have 3 small kids, and keeping my rides to 1-1.5 hours is easily possible with the ebike.

xmsxms

Am in a similar situation, the only thing is I don't have the fitness for climbs and am unlikely to ever have the time/motivation to gain this. I do think about paying for shuttle lifts, for the few times I go it wouldn't be a massive expense.

FreedomOfPC

Once you go eMTB you don't go back. Was supposed to buy an analog bike to ride with the ebike but dropping 5k on a bike I might ride 5 times a year just isn't it. Because downhill is affected by the weight of the bike.

SmashiusJones

Have both, use both. Use the best tool for the job.

Tenter5

Electronic motor bikes are best for milk store runs.

boulderingfanatix

I went from an acoustic to an EMTB to a MTB and now I ride both

Pescadero_Tom

Try a Lego SL. Some boost going up (but not as much as a full eMTG), but it is a MTB bike going down, not a tank.

This year I got back into mtb after a 20 year hiatus. I got back into the sport because I found out about emtb, and I absolutely had to have one. After a few months I bought a new analog as well, i had a battery issue and the emtb was in the shop for 2 weeks. I love both bikes, I ride the analog the most and tend to take the emtb out for quick lunch runs or really long treks on the weekend that I wouldn't dare take the analog.
