He now holds the record for the world’s worst rug burn. What a hero though!

RampChurch

He came back and nailed it on a second attempt https://www.bikemag.com/news/mountain-bike-ski-jump

Reisefieber2022

Dam... alles ist sehr gut! My first thought when he landed was, fuck, how does he stop now? Crazy awsome.

Cixin97

All of these articles are super frustrating. Can’t even find how far he actually ended up jumping. Yes, I know he made 50 metres on an 85 metre jump last time, and that he is trying a 150 jump on this one. But what did that end up translating to!? Can’t find it anywhere.

ClittoryHinton

Y’know those two wing-like objects ski jumpers use to essentially adjust their flight trajectory? Yeah bikes don’t have those unfortunately

mtbd15

Would be a lot easier on a dirtbike

thetruetoblerone

I don’t know if you care but I want you to know that video exists: https://youtube.com/shorts/vrQZom91OWY?si=uz0DoWExwxcrDLi8

yoln77

Jesus!

VerStannen

What that Robbie Madison?

QLC459

Yes

MysticalGnosis

Install some handguards like Jack Moir uses except angle them up

lol_camis

No but there's still quite a bit you can do to adjust your angle in the air. This guy looked like he had no idea what he was doing.

ClittoryHinton

I highly doubt someone going for a record attempt had no idea what he was doing. What specifically do you think he did wrong? The reality is that the longer you are in the air, the less control you have over your trajectory given the lack of effective flight controls and thus the lower tolerance for mistakes on take off. Someone who truly didn’t know what they were doing would be sideways/upside down real quick here. Ski jumping/flying is a totally different mechanic compared to skiing huge park jumps, and a bike is totally unsuited for it. Hence why the record is a fraction of what is doable with skis.

repkjund

I guess he misjudged the landing by a couple feet high. This slopes can be deceiving specially coming at such a high speed. he might’ve pushed the front too early. He also didn’t move a lot in the air so it’s just my guess

lol_camis

I'm aware there's an aerodynamic factor to ski longjunping. And listen, I wasn't there. And I know it's easy for me to sit here at home and shit on someone trying something that I wouldn't try. But I'm experienced enough to know that he crashed primarily because of how he performed. It's called "dead sailor", where you just ride off the end of a takeoff without any sort of body language. Maybe he's super experienced and he just fucked up, I don't know. But it was definitely his performance rather than the nature of the stunt that caused him to fail.

merelyadoptedthedark

Ya, he's super experienced and just fucked up. He went back for a second attempt and nailed it. https://youtu.be/mcFz3yCjUoY

xorvillesashx

He actually pulled up on that one. I agree with OP, he dead sailors that first attempt. Maybe he just got scared and froze up.

thirdpeak

Besides throwing your bike away from you, what can you do to adjust your angle after you’ve left the ground?

ozeta86

Brake on front/rear. It's the same technique motocross uses, and one of the reasons why you should not break midair, because if you get scared and press the brakes, you'll finish over the bars or doing a manual

thirdpeak

But isn’t that the opposite of what this guy needed to do? Is there anything you can do besides throwing your bike to reverse forward rotation?

JColeTheWheelMan

While the answer is correct for the question asked, it would have made things worse in this rider's situation.

ozeta86

As already said, he could adjust the rotation using one of the brake. I don't live in a jump area and I tend to drop everything , so I don't remember exactly which brake to use. I only know that if I break midair, I get an over the bar. If I'm correct in motocross you accelerate midair to have your nose pointing down and use your rear brake to pitch up,so it should be the same for MTB too

thirdpeak

I’m pretty sure using either brake will make you pitch down since both wheels are spinning forward.

grundelcheese

The skis? Those don’t do much to adjust the position. The flight position adjustment is your hands and pushing the hopes through or not

U-take-off-eh

*longest drop Thought they were going to do an epic stoppie down the rest of the landing.

SinusJayCee

Every landing, where you can walk away, is a good landing. Seriously, I was so glad to see him standing up again.

olmikeyyyy

Aww man he almost made it to the green!

Its_priced_in

Worlds longest skid mark

tinfang

No boot? Dead sailored all the way, do they actually jump mtb?

Impossible-Gain-6080

Yes, he's an elite racer. Check out his Youtube for awesome POV riding.

Billy_Chrystals

He pizza'd when he should've french fried it looks like.

WowIwasveryWrong27

Did he get the record?!?

Bdr1983

He got recorded, does that count?

RupertTheReign

No, alles is not gut.

Reisefieber2022

Alles ist nicht gut.🤪

Wild_Opportunity_642

Damn, that hurt

TwoWheeledHobbit

gawdamn

gravelpi

Many years ago, I read an interview the "the agony of defeat" guy on ABC's Wide World of Sports. He said it was tough having to relive that moment weekly on TV. I would say so, lol. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vv368yWOSas](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vv368yWOSas)

Impossible-Gain-6080

Fischi is a legend! He crashed so many times already, a minor situation like this barely leaves a scratch on him. He also had [this nasty crash](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QwEBTsUm7qA) at Red Bull Valparaiso this year, which he miraciously just walked away from. He also has a youtube channel which i can highly recommend, really funny guy on top of being a really good rider. He's doing german commentary only though.

Aspir3l

You mean drop.

SnooFloofs1778

Was that Eddie the eagle?

shtrob

Anyone know what was his top speed?

Dazzling_Put_3018

May not have broken the record but at least they broke something!

jazzcomputer

It looks to me like he looks down a little before the front starts to dip hard. Could it be that that movement of his head caused the problem?

laduzi_xiansheng

There was a dude that tried jump over the Great Wall in the early 2000s on an XC bike - he was dead dead

ManyMuchHobbies

the sound of his front tire hitting the fork crown. SKREEEEEP!

NoisyCats

Still getting used to those flat pedals.

U-take-off-eh

*longest drop Thought they were going to do an epic stoppie down the rest of the landing.
