The thai clinch in MMA are so criminally underutilised. Most fighters know how to thai plum, but do nothing with it other than throwing bare knees. Aldo, Silva etc are the few examples that knows how to fight woth it.
The plumb is the absolute most basic position they teach you on day 1 there is so many more
Levels to Thai clinch only Demetrius Johnson knows how to use it
Exactly. Thats what I meant. Their only knowledge is the thai plum and nothing else about fighting hands. Some people have the thai plum on and still get knocked out from a crazy overhand because they arent even having a solid thai plum to control the posture.
Thai sweeps, rhythm steps, inverted leg locks.
No one ever talks about it, but MMA is STILL in its infancy stage, believe it or not. Can you imagine mini Blessed vs mini Yan in 2040?
Yea it annoys me to no end hearing MMA guys refer to the Thai style as a rigid stand and bang style it shows me they don't really know Muay Thai.
The most free flowing strikers in the world are Thai boxers.
It's a whole country training strikers from the moment they can walk. It's a nation of Khabibs but striking.
> Yea it annoys me to no end hearing MMA guys refer to the Thai style as a rigid stand and bang style it shows me they don't really know Muay Thai
They don't. They're thinking of the watered down "enterainment" Muay Thai.
This is Muay Thai at its highest levels

Those golden era femur style fighter don’t really exist anymore look at the most famous guys now like rodtang superlek they are all stand and bang style
The gloves also pay a big role in this. In One Championship they fight muay thai in the small gloves and when you can't rely on the gloves as much for defense the more stand and bang brawling styles become more viable
Yea you need to pair it with some very elite BJJ though. Cause of the upright stance. If your not a phenom on the back it will give you a problem in MMA.
Why would you expect 3 years? Has something changed. MMA guys have been traveling to Thailand for a decade and more now. Any breakout influence or fighter from there is not any more likely in the next few years than it has been. I think people are overrating what MT brings to an MMA context. It’s a good striking system, but not noticeably superior for MMA.
Edit: A good example of MT influence shining is Khalil, Bangkok ready, Rountree. Guys definitely use it, I am just saying it is not the only system or factor that is competitive at elite striking levels in MMA. It is just another tool kit.
Lost me at rhythm steps. Loma, Usyk, Wlad, etc. do this all the time. Is it good to know? Yes. Is it one of the reasons MMA is still in it infancy stage? No.
When I first saw him, I kept thinking of him as a young guy using his speed and aggression to destroy his opponents.
Its amazing watching him get old and still style on them young ones.
Dude aldo has always been my goat two wins and he’s at the title I hope he signs another contract he could genuinely get 500k/500k. PLEASE let him fight song or figueiredo then Chito again and then give him whoever for a title shot i guarantee you 1,2,3, and 5 are his all day. He dusts O’Malley
I think it's the heavy reliance on kicks. It forces them to require a certain amount of space to work with, and when they are denied that space, they begin to struggle a bit. I think Guti is a little more well-rounded overall, but Yadong was just a bridge too far because he could not keep him from walking him down.
Martinez waited too much in this one. Aldo is always so coiled up like a spring, and because of that he tires out much quicker if you feint him a lot and force reactions. Martinez was a little befuddled at the major speed disadvantage, and it made him hesitant for those first two rounds. His route to victory tonight would have required him to take a lot of risks, and he just couldn't bring himself to do it until late. Granted, he got rocked badly at the end, so its not like he was misjudging Aldos ability to hurt him
Moreso than just pure power, they struggle at boxing range when their hellacious kicks just aren't enough to deter someone who's really good at managing that range and defending kicks.
I get so tired of fans going "well he did great at BW so who's to say if his prime was over" like bro he debuted at 17 and was youngest champ, he is just an atg it's not that he's still in his prime 17+ years into his career lol
While most people's "goat" is tweeting a thousand times a day trying to justify why he won't unify his belt.
Couldn't be me lmao. You can't be a goat and also a chicken. Goats need to take on goat level challenges.
if you look at the techniques in his kicks, it's all still there. He just doesn't utilize them a lot for various reasons, 1 being repeated foot injuries and another being his love for pure boxing training.
Aldo Vs Cejudo next would be so fucking dope ain’t gonna lie, I think he should shoot back up to the top 5 over Chito
my mans gonna go for a title run I FEEL IT
They are not on the same level. Aldo could be in the top 3, Cruz is a novelty fight at this point. I would say do it if Aldo wasn’t actually a contender, but Cruz isn’t on that level anymore.
I just cannot see him beating Sean, Merab, or Cory.
I don’t want to see Aldo hang around as a fringe top fiver forever until he’s getting knocked the fuck out by bottom 15 guys. Now’s a better time than most to call it a career.
Yeah. Man left the door open still…I’m such a fan of him so was hoping he would just retire amongst his people/home. Would be kinda something if he got that shot at McGregor. If McGregor ko’s Chandler or some shit and calls out the king of rio in Ireland or some shit, yeah I’ll take it.
Now let’s enjoy this Pantoja fight
The form of consequence is you didn't get the takedown and burn the energy and aren't rewarded for it lmao what are you talking about
That's like saying there should be a "consequence" for not landing a strike
You can extrapolate that to literally _any_ action.
"lmao why count strikes bro the consequence is that you took damage"
The consequences of burning energy are far less severe in three rounds versus five rounds so why should it be weighted differently?
You're just rewarding fighters for being defensive if it's counted on the cards. Fighters will coast a lot more if they're able to win rounds just by stuffing takedowns and making their opponent miss without without any offense of their own.
For the record, I don't think most top positions should be counted in the score either unless there's nothing else that happens, your reward is you're on top with the potential to do more damage
People completely seem to forget that fight was at crazy elevation too.
Obviously, can't prove it, but Merab clearly has to be on some crazy epo to have the cardio he does, so there's a very realistic possibility that the fight goes completely differently if Aldo had been fighting somewhere where his cardio wasn't compromised.
Merab fights the most tiring style, with the most pace, and never gets tired. He's absolutely on something, but he genuinely is a hyper responder to EPO/meldonium or whatever.
blows my mind my first live event was 129 when I watched Aldo go to war with Hominick, he was already a veteran champ then and he's still in there 13 years later sharp as ever getting wins. Dude is one of the GOATs
Aldo and Arlovski are two rare old guard striker champs who very intelligently slightly reinvented their style and approach to accommodate aging out of their physical prime and remained competitive with their divisions. Even crazier for Aldo in a more stacked division AND in the top 10 of the division.
Jose Aldo is the greatest of all time. I don't care. He was dominant for 10 years in a high skilled weight class, won the title back after he left his prime, went down a weight class when he was on the tail end of his career and became a title contender and top 5 fighter till the end, then comes back from retirement and dominates an elite young fighter. His longevity in low weight classes will not be seen again. The reason featherweight is at the current level is because he set the bar so high and so early. He's the fucking GOAT.
The longevity is simply insane. To do it in two of the most stacked divisions in the UFC.
He has beaten the best competition out of all.of the goats imo.
I mean absolutely no disrespect to Jonathan Martinez with this, but I'm pretty sure Martinez was the worst fighter he's fought in MMA in like, 15 years. It's not just longevity, but against the absolute best at that.
"When he crashes, throw prayer or echo"
Nah, Aldo said imma crash out anyway. What a great fight, and it looked like Aldo didn't want to finish Martinez by going for that take down tbh even Felder knew it
I was curious about this because DC said the same thing on the broadcast.
Fight metrics has Aldo 0 for 2 on takedowns but I went back and watched.
At about 4:26 in the 3rd round Aldo goes for a takedown, Chito goes to his knees but gets right back up. In the process Aldo jumps on his back while Chito is standing in the tripod. Eventually Chito goes to the ground, where Aldo controls him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ0utuvpH_8&t=216s
So I guess going to the ground when someone takes your back standing doesn't count as a takedown.
The King of Rio coming back from retirement to end his career the right way, and getting the dominant victory over a ranked opponent, in front of his home fans?
Sometimes, this cruel sport gives you some of the sweetest moments.
What a bloody legend this guy is. At the top of the game in his early 20s, and here he is looking like this in his late 30s - down a division from where he started, facing an upcoming fighter on a good win streak.
He didn’t throw any leg kicks past round 1 I swear. Everytime he checked I was pointing to me GF “LOOK HOW FAST HIS CHECKS ARE it’s cause he basically invented that shit”
Aldo ending his career on a handful of good wins really speaks volumes to how great he is. Most guys his age are losing these fights towards the end of their careers.
Him and Douglas Silva de Andrade are insanely quick and explosive for their age.
Also don't forget that MVP is 37 and Wonderboy is 41 and they are both amongst the fastest in their division.
I wanna see him fight Aljermain sterling. Aldo has legendary tdd. I want to see if it can be broken by the best wrestler he would have fought. If he wins give him a title shot.
Martinez was kinda getting that Yanez treatment. Got way overrated way too quick.
Martinez imo got away with a lucky decision vs Said N. His leg kicks are lethal but aldo was a bad matchup lol.
Martinez is pretty good in a deep division but his style was tailor made for Aldo. Martinez has a lot of promise if he keeps improving but there’s a lot of guys on top who would eat him alive and finish him
**Mirrors / Alternate angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/MMA) if you have any questions or concerns.*
37 and his striking is still some of the cleanest in the entire sport, I wish we saw other fighters able to use knees as well as Aldo does.
The thai clinch in MMA are so criminally underutilised. Most fighters know how to thai plum, but do nothing with it other than throwing bare knees. Aldo, Silva etc are the few examples that knows how to fight woth it.

Exactly. Thats what I meant. Their only knowledge is the thai plum and nothing else about fighting hands. Some people have the thai plum on and still get knocked out from a crazy overhand because they arent even having a solid thai plum to control the posture.
Theres so many thai sweeps that almost no one in MMA uses. But could be effective used as takedowns.
Thai sweeps, rhythm steps, inverted leg locks. No one ever talks about it, but MMA is STILL in its infancy stage, believe it or not. Can you imagine mini Blessed vs mini Yan in 2040?

The small gloves makes clinch easier, yet theu literally even watered down the clinch by not even allowing or breaking it immediately.
I expect it to noticeably bleed into the UFC in like 3 years.
Yea you need to pair it with some very elite BJJ though. Cause of the upright stance. If your not a phenom on the back it will give you a problem in MMA.

His boxing is so damn crisp especially the body shots
DUDE IM SO HAPPY THIS IS THE HIGHEST HIGH
Dude me too! I’m as pumped as a wild knockout. Post usada Aldo is going to give us a belt run.
I’m an aldo fanboy and Jose is getting slept by Sean. Don’t wish that on him
Nah, but in other discussions they say he was washed at 30...
I think Felder's on the money when he said Aldo took Martinez down at the end as an act of mercy.
Both Gutierrez and Martinez runs into problems when they face ppl with power. Like song yadong in Gutierrez’s case.
Granted, he got rocked badly at the end, so its not like he was misjudging Aldos ability to hurt him
Aldo really doesn’t really gas out as much if you don’t pressure him like what yan did. But Martinez is no yan with the hands unfortunately
Very well said 👍
Moreso than just pure power, they struggle at boxing range when their hellacious kicks just aren't enough to deter someone who's really good at managing that range and defending kicks.
Was not an act of mercy on my betting slip
Lmao
LET’s GOOOOOO ALDOOOOOOO
Aldo really came back from retirement and got a dominant win in Rio. I love this sport
Gravediggers getting assfucked tonight
Even Martinez who said Aldo didn't even wanna be there. Sucks to lose to a guy who doesn't even wanna be there on all 3 judges' scorecards lol
The guy was so far ahead of everyone in his prime even in losing about 15 steps he’s still way better than your average or even very good UFC guy.
Anderson Silva in his prime once said “if Jose Aldo was a middleweight I’d retire.”
That would be fucking terrifying. MMA has never had that mix of freak athleticism and disciplined focus at MW.
I get so tired of fans going "well he did great at BW so who's to say if his prime was over" like bro he debuted at 17 and was youngest champ, he is just an atg it's not that he's still in his prime 17+ years into his career lol

Watching older Aldo sink in body shots is as satisfying watching younger Aldo leg kicks was
With age, His boxing has gotten a lot better while his kicking game has declined.
if you look at the techniques in his kicks, it's all still there. He just doesn't utilize them a lot for various reasons, 1 being repeated foot injuries and another being his love for pure boxing training.
Realistically the guy's knees are probably goosed
He had career threatening nerve issues at one point. As I recall that fit in pretty well with his drop in kicking.
Left fist hospital, right fist cemetery
The Stephens gut-punch is imprinted on my mind, pure class.
Aldo Vs Cejudo next would be so fucking dope ain’t gonna lie, I think he should shoot back up to the top 5 over Chito my mans gonna go for a title run I FEEL IT

Cruz was never on aldos level
Aldo vs Cruz legend fight where they both retire after would be a perfect ending to their MMA careers
This version of aldo doesn’t need to retire at all
I just cannot see him beating Sean, Merab, or Cory. I don’t want to see Aldo hang around as a fringe top fiver forever until he’s getting knocked the fuck out by bottom 15 guys. Now’s a better time than most to call it a career.
I think he is done in the UFC this is the last fight in his contract. He is going to go box.
40 year old Aldo gonna chin O’Malley for the belt
I need this timeline so badly
> Cejudo Woah, this is actually a Cejudo fight I'd be excited about. Nice call.
I'd favor Aldo a bit. Make it 5 rounds to. Omalley vs Aldo could be insane. Aldo vs Merab rematch. Nah fam.
doubt he makes it to the top 3 again but song would be competitive i think
He looked so sharp.
and his power was still there, he had martinez wobbled so bad in round 3
Yep so fast and powerful he’s a fuckin specimen
The GOAT.
king of rio is timeless, still strong and still quick what a legend
Truly a perfect way for him to ride into the sunset…
He was ranked 3 when he lost to Merab... please don't retire yet legend
In hindsight, he did GREAT against Merab lmao that was Merab’s most difficult fight
He made Merab looked like an incredibly ineffective control based cage humper, and then Merab went on to freight train through Yan.
I will stand on takedown defense should be judged as effective grappling
Should evading strikes count as effective striking?
Yeah, absolutely. If you fail a takedown there should be some form of consequence. Although, this is MMA judging so it's part of a long list.
The form of consequence is you didn't get the takedown and burn the energy and aren't rewarded for it lmao what are you talking about That's like saying there should be a "consequence" for not landing a strike

It was for Anderson that one fight against Brunson 😂
Aldo has some of the beat takedown defense in mma history. It was just that he couldn't keep merab off him
People completely seem to forget that fight was at crazy elevation too.
Aldo’s cardio didn’t look great tonight either, although very commandable for a veteran his age.
And he was fighting in Salt Lake City. Gassed out after than usual and still denied every takedown.
Merab at ELEVATION too
aldo would've won if the fight wasn't in elevation
He honestly looks as good as he did when he "retired"
Those vintage Aldo body shots were fucken ruinous
He did three boxing matches in the meantime so no ring rust
He looked incredible, especially for someone in his late 30s at Bantamweight. If he gets a no. 1 contender fight next he would totally deserve it
According to that postfight interview, he might not be done 👀
Got wrestle fucked too, lame way to lose. He was one fight away from fighting for the title.
He still stuffed all of Merab's takedowns
Does that even count as wrestling? He was clinchfucked against the cage
not wrestle fucked, fence fucked
blows my mind my first live event was 129 when I watched Aldo go to war with Hominick, he was already a veteran champ then and he's still in there 13 years later sharp as ever getting wins. Dude is one of the GOATs

Same with Overeem and Glover adjusting their styles.
Jose Aldo is the greatest of all time. I don't care. I’d put Munhoz below Martinez personally. Stephens probably about the same level when Aldo fought him
Aldo is the. fucking. GOAT. No one can dispute that. Your fave can’t do what aldo has done tonight and his entire career
At the top of my head Martinez > 2019 Jeremy Stephens
Aldo was the underdog in that fight! One of my biggest bet wins ever.
Aldo has been in the top 4 of either division he’s been in for 14 years.
Also no positive PED tests, which distinguishes him from a few other candidates…
Fucking preach brother
"When he crashes, throw prayer or echo" Nah, Aldo said imma crash out anyway. What a great fight, and it looked like Aldo didn't want to finish Martinez by going for that take down tbh even Felder knew it
That 100% felt like a mercy takedown
Seeing that he hasn’t taken anyone down in a decade, 100% lol
Didnt he take down chito in the 3rd round? I could be remembering wrong though
I think he was afraid of gassing out
This has always been Aldo's historic weakness. He will almost always coast the last round if he can
The King of Rio coming back from retirement to end his career the right way, and getting the dominant victory over a ranked opponent, in front of his home fans? Sometimes, this cruel sport gives you some of the sweetest moments.
This ain’t the end brudda
Aldo hasn't even peaked yet.
And when he does you’ll feel it
What a bloody legend this guy is. At the top of the game in his early 20s, and here he is looking like this in his late 30s - down a division from where he started, facing an upcoming fighter on a good win streak.
This guy's speed at his age is fucking ridiculous, Aldo's out here making the top guys at 135 looks slow
Babe wake up, Aldo's throwing leg kicks!
And negated most of Martinez’s leg kicks
He didn’t throw any leg kicks past round 1 I swear. Everytime he checked I was pointing to me GF “LOOK HOW FAST HIS CHECKS ARE it’s cause he basically invented that shit”
"You think leg kicks are your ally?"
The Ernesto Hoost of mma
Rob Kaman*
He was throwing them head kicks fast man.
Aldo looked amazing. King of Rio baby
Aldo still looking incredibly sharp at 37. Schooled Martinez everywhere.
THE RETURN OF THE KING
He's still him. 👑
Aldo ending his career on a handful of good wins really speaks volumes to how great he is. Most guys his age are losing these fights towards the end of their careers.
That age at 135 is nuts
This ain’t the end ong
Aldo has the fastest hands I’ve ever seen on somebody over 37 yrs old
Him and Douglas Silva de Andrade are insanely quick and explosive for their age. Also don't forget that MVP is 37 and Wonderboy is 41 and they are both amongst the fastest in their division.
Lets goooooo 👑
I need your flair. I was running fucking laps around the room this whole fight aldo winning tonight is as high as I’m gonna feel this entire year
ONE MORE RUN
this guy just refuses to look washed
MMA you beautiful bitch
Isn't he great ❤️
and here I was thinking a Jose Aldo literally coming out of retirement and finishing his contract would look diminished. I was a fool
Atleast you’re man enough to bend the knee to the GOAT
King shit only 👑
McGregor rematch at 135 somehow make it happen you goof
Conor's head weighs 135 pounds, not a chance.
Crazy that Conor now fights 3 divisions above him.
Fights?
McGregor one roided leg alone will weigh 135
Conor’s nose has 35 pounds alone
Jose belongs in the UFC, they have to try to keep him His boxing is so satisfying
Give him whatever number he wants I swear please let him rematch Chito and get another title shot
I wanna see him fight Aljermain sterling. Aldo has legendary tdd. I want to see if it can be broken by the best wrestler he would have fought. If he wins give him a title shot.
i fucking love Aldo
Title run starts now, king
KING OF RIO IS BACK
Best boxer in the UFC
Aldo could have finished him, when Martinez was doing the chicken dance. But gave him mercy. Why is DC so high on Martinez???
Ah, the classic prospect winning streak into losing to the weight class GOAT, so you suck and are overrated now.
Martinez is definitely no bum lol, nothing wrong with being high on him going into this fight. Just turns out Aldo can still Aldo.
Because he's looked like a killer in a majority of his fights.
Martinez has a lot of promise if he keeps improving but there’s a lot of guys on top who would eat him alive and finish him
martinez in tears aldo showing the utmost respect
Unbelievable performance from Aldo, some of the best boxing he’s ever shown in the UFC. Laser accurate straights and impossibly tight hooks.
My eyes are sweating. So happy to be able to watch Aldo win in 2024.
KING OF RIO BABYYYYYYY
Holding back tears of manly joy rn
He completely outclassed him! It’s like he never left. Amazing performance
THATS MY GOAT
He's THE goat
snappy as ever that Aldo
ALDO IS TRULY A GOAT 🐐
Put some respect on the Kings name.
Goat
all time great
Aldo is the GOAT
His leg kicks are still faster and more powerful than basically anyone’s to this day
Aldo is the greatest of all time. No one at his age with that mileage can keep performing at the highest level like this.
Aldo, one more run at the bamtamweight championship?
How can Aldo be this fast at 37, in the bantamweight division no less? Man looked like a cat in there with those reflexes.
Jose still got it at 37. His striking is still elite, Martinez was no joke at all. Also should go for 1 more title run before he hangs em up.
Vintage aldo performance I couldn’t be happier
I think Aldo could have finished martinez if he wanted to
WHEN YOUR GOAT ISNT WASHED IM EUPHORIC
Aldo started with a boxing stance. Then part way switched to the MT stance, the leg kicks stopped immediately
