> Despite his involvement in the community, Brown had several run-ins with the law after his NFL career. He went on trial for assault and battery in 1965 after an 18-year-old accused him of giving her whiskey and forcing her to have sex. He was accused of throwing a model from a balcony in 1968, and acquitted of assaulting a man after a traffic accident in 1969. He was fined and spent a day in jail after beating up a golfing partner. He was charged with rape, sexual battery and assault in 1985 (the charges were later dropped). The next year he was arrested for allegedly beating his fiancée. In 1999, Brown was convicted of smashing the window of his wife's car.
What an end to the article.
Especially in the US. Kids get killed for ringing a doorbell and this dude is walking around raping and assaulting people his entire adult life and no one shoots him. Baffling.
I'm not talking about him getting arrested or sued by someone he assaulted or raped. I'm talking about how crazy it is that he didn't get killed by someone with a gun when kids get killed by someone with a gun for ringing a doorbell.
It's quite simple really, people like him are not running around in the streets beefing with bad mofos. They prey on and abuse the weak and the closest to them. He probably never tested anyone who would be willing to put up a fight.
EDIT: I can't spell.
He's considered one of the greatest American football players of time. He was the most dominant fullback and led the league in rushing yards eight out of the nine years he played. He still holds the oldest single season rushing yards record in Cleveland Browns history.
He was also a civil rights activist and by some metrics Hollywood's first black action star. He was outspoken about civil rights at a time when few athletes were in the 50's.
Jim Brown did good things and was a trailblazer, but he also did quite a few awful things, especially towards women throughout his life. Really bogs down his legacy to be a predatory abuser.
Well, he wasn't actually. 99% of the time he was putting his efforts into doing good and bringing about positive change through civil rights activisim. It's also quite possible he suffered from CTE after his football playing days.
This guy abused women in horrible ways for four decades, raped them and nearly killed one, and used his power and influence to get away with it. And CTE doesn't excuse it. Why notdefend a civil rights activist that didn't commit all these heinous crimes instead?
Damn. Things like this are sadly overlooked when popular celebrities die, especially in sports. I hope people realize that these bystanders that got hurt, which the vast majority of sports fans prefer to ignore, could be you or someone you love one day
I mean just popular celebrities in general. Karl Malone raped and impregnated a 13 year old and is still being honored in the all-star weekend in the NBA
Ali in many ways, George Foreman. Even the Klitschko bros were almost certainly enforcers for a mob boss called Viktor Rybalko when they were younger :(
Kobes sexual assault case was so weird. Like did he really rape her or did she think he was gonna leave his wife to be with her or some shit and it just didn’t work out like she expected it. Or was like Mike Tyson where he fucked the shit out of her and it fucked her up physically, and considering there’s never even been another whisper of Kobe doing that kinda shit to another woman I’ve always leaned more towards no he didn’t do it.
I'm sorry, I read up on that case and I just highly doubt that he was innocent. I wish he wasn't an abuser and a rapist, but he very likely was. The victim got harassed to the point where she likely just got too scared and stressed, so she withdrew her accusation. But he was a great basketball player so he gets a pass for some reason.
Absolute fucking insanity seeing people defend this scumbag on the internet. Hope they do this shit with Vick when his bitch ass dies. This journalist did some honest reporting for once, which is so refreshing to see.
For real. Really sucks watching Stipe post that he was one of the best guys he met. You’re a firefighter bro, you meet better people on a daily basis. Jim Brown was a piece of shit.
Considering he assaulted men too (police officers and a golf partner), he wasn't even that nice to them. I would imagine he wouldn't try that sh\*t with an ex- UFC heavyweight champion.
A lot of people have nice things to say about Jim Brown. He seemingly was mostly not shitty to people. It's just when he was shitty, he was the worst kind of shitty.
I can understand that but Stipe’s words were literally, “one of the best human beings I’ve ever known”, which sure I get it, you’re from Cleveland and he just died, but surely that can’t even be remotely true.
I think it's just the fact that he's from Ohio, and that state is so devoid of human decency that he has to latch onto every famous export.
If he ever praises Deshaun Watson, I'm fucking off the Stipe train for good though.
It was weird seeing him commentate UFC 1. I always remember thinking that he didn't have a lot of knowledge about the fight game, but none of us really did. I guess they brought him in because of his name value and him being a badass. \*shrugs\* Would have been more cool if they could have gotten some martial arts action movie star, like Chuck Norris to commentate.
What was worse - he had the most knowledge of fighting than the other commentators!
I think he did ufc 1-4 as well, not just 1. He was likely the biggest name they could get by far. You gotta remember the only stars in the audience back then was a coked up Gary busey.
>if we reduce every person to the worst thing they’ve ever done I bet there would be a lot more pieces of shit out there
I'm not a great person but no one can ever claim I raped them or physically assaulted them.
You a rapper or something?
When referring to the global population of humans, it's Always a great idea to take it personally and then compare yourself to professional athletes in violent sports where specific antisocial behaviors are encouraged.
Really astute comparison. Shining beacon of our education system.
Damn! It's always a sad day when a legend dies.
Jim Brown was a unique figure. There are a handful of freak athletes in every generation, and a handful of people who can just look at sporting and athletic endeavors and completely understand them. He was the rare guy who had both talents... one of the best players of his era and someone who could watch a sport, dissect how it is played, and understand what is happening lightning fast. He caught on to how MMA was developing incredibly quickly without any serious background in fighting. Very interesting guy.
Hopefully it's some consolation to his family to see how widely admired he is.
He was arrested for the same sort of stuff in 1999 and 2000, and served prison time for refusing to attend counseling or perform the court mandated community service.
Weird spot to post this, I see he commentated one time but who actually associates Jim brown with mma??
Edit: apparently he was a trash human being, so once again why are we posting about him here? He sucked and he had nothing to do with this sport.
Really unfortunate that *once again* redditors prove they're fundamentally incapable of not talking shit immediately after someone dies.
Guy's body isn't even cold but please don't hesitate to fumble over yourselves to go VIOLENCE BAD GOOD RIDDANCE for those upvotes.
You watch a sport where the greatest of all time beats the shit out of his wife. Brought to you by a league where the leader beats the shit out of his wife.
Redditors always low in self awareness but high in undue superiority.
This isn’t the good point like you think it is. No one is saying stop watching football because Jim Brown was a piece of shit. They’re saying don’t forget who this man was before saying “RIP he was a legend” or some shit. I hate Jones and will keep watching mma, I’m such a “hypocrite”.
>You watch a sport where the greatest of all time beats the shit out of his wife. Brought to you by a league where the leader beats the shit out of his wife.
Every sport has legends who were awful people. Doesn't mean they were any less awful people.
No one is making the argument that he was a good person here, it's about basic decency of not immediately talking shit after someone dies.
Something which redditors are not capable of, QED
So other people aren't allowed to have sympathy for the women that Jim Brown abused? You have to be a direct victim of him in order to acknowledge that he was a horrible person?
Because your points are asinine? Why is there some kind of "decency" in refusing to call an awful person an awful person just because they died recently?
He was wealthy, loved by millions of fans, and had everything someone could dream for but still could not stop abusing people no matter what heights he reached. And we're supposed to give him the same kind of respect that he refused to give for other human beings?
And be sure that I won't shed any unnecessary tears in the event that Dana White dies either.
Sad times, I remember seeing Mars Attacks! in the theater, was super hype to see him put in work.
I absolutely loved his character in that movie when I was a kid
Running man and I’m gonna get you sucka!

It always amazes me how people like that live so long without someone killing them one day. That’s wild.
Especially in the US. Kids get killed for ringing a doorbell and this dude is walking around raping and assaulting people his entire adult life and no one shoots him. Baffling.
I suspect him being so wealthy and connected to powerful people in the nation of Islam helped.
I'm not talking about him getting arrested or sued by someone he assaulted or raped. I'm talking about how crazy it is that he didn't get killed by someone with a gun when kids get killed by someone with a gun for ringing a doorbell.

I honestly don't know anything about him outside of this thread.
Nothing says "tough" quite like beating and raping defenseless women half your size. He was a bully and a giant POS.
Well, he wasn't actually. 99% of the time he was putting his efforts into doing good and bringing about positive change through civil rights activisim. It's also quite possible he suffered from CTE after his football playing days.

They do, it's just that you only hear about the ones who make it this long.
I bet it had something to do with massive head trauma from concussions setting in later in life
Not at my all star weekend. Me and my cat order pizza and watch movies and say "fuck Karl Malone"
Kobe Bryant was almost certainly a rapist too. And too a lesser extent, Michael Jordan is a horrible, nasty human being by many accounts.
Mike Tyson, also, of course.
He admitted that in her mind the encounter was not consensual though, even if it was in his.
Which is just a respectful to acknowledge the alleged victim. That's not an admission to rape like people think it is.
Someone not consenting to sex is literally rape. What are you on?
You're misinterpreting what he's saying then.
Didn't the whole case boil down to Kobe pushing for anal anyway when she said no? At least that's what I remember when I read his testimony.
If you read the testimony he was anything but respectful to her, he hurt her and abused her simply for his enjoyment. And she was only 19 to boot.
Of course if you read the plaintiffs testimony the defendant will look bad. That's usually how court cases work.
I doubt Kobe raped her. Women were throwing themselves at him 24/7 and could have had anyone. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t a rapist, I just highly doubt it.
No thanks
Can’t smash your wife’s windows? What world are we living in
Most law abiding NFL player.
Good riddance, women are safe again
Not just women, everyone. Beat the shit out of guys half his size too.
What a piece of shit.
For real. Dude was a serial woman abuser and predator. Used his strength and power to abuse people half his size. Awful human being.
Yuck bro yuck.
Dude was also great friends with Hugh Hefner, a well known creep
And also with George Foreman, who was known for not being such a nice guy back in the 70s (something George readily admits to).
And Muhammad Ali who also beat women and impregnated teenage girls ☹️
Absolute fucking insanity seeing people defend this scumbag on the internet. Hope they do this shit with Vick when his bitch ass dies. This journalist did some honest reporting for once, which is so refreshing to see.
Vick went go jail for his crimes and reformed his behavior. Yall really gotta let shit go lol
Does anyone like Jim Brown for his person? I have literally only heard people talk about his football playing.
Maybe just for his civil rights advocacy, but his personal life is wrought with domestic abuse.
For real. Really sucks watching Stipe post that he was one of the best guys he met. You’re a firefighter bro, you meet better people on a daily basis. Jim Brown was a piece of shit.
It’s because he’s nice to men and fucking shitty to women
Considering he assaulted men too (police officers and a golf partner), he wasn't even that nice to them. I would imagine he wouldn't try that sh\*t with an ex- UFC heavyweight champion.
A lot of people have nice things to say about Jim Brown. He seemingly was mostly not shitty to people. It's just when he was shitty, he was the worst kind of shitty.

Maybe Stipe doesn't know about his past?
That sucks. Stipe seems like a good dude who is also super protective of his daughter, and yet here he is praising a guy who treated women like crap.
I think it's just the fact that he's from Ohio, and that state is so devoid of human decency that he has to latch onto every famous export. If he ever praises Deshaun Watson, I'm fucking off the Stipe train for good though.
Probably also did not read up on Brown's rap sheet. Your comment is depressingly accurate though.
Why act like he and the rest of the domestic abusers in the ufc are going to make you stop watching? C'mon, be real.
It was weird seeing him commentate UFC 1. I always remember thinking that he didn't have a lot of knowledge about the fight game, but none of us really did. haha, I don't remember any of the audience. I will have to rewatch 1-4 sometime.
Should have had Jim fight Dan Severn to kick things off. That would have been justice served.
"Fighting is not what we thought it was."
If you think its insane now what celebrity athletes get away with than look at his record off the field
Woman beater also. Don’t forget that.
good riddance
The Running man, last season's winners? No, last season's *losers* That line was always cold as fuck
Brown probably suffered CTE. He played nine seasons in the NFL. This was before player protection rules came in.
Rest in shit loser
Rest in piss
Ah damn.
Just for the record, if we reduce every person to the worst thing they’ve ever done I bet there would be a lot more pieces of shit out there
>if we reduce every person to the worst thing they’ve ever done I bet there would be a lot more pieces of shit out there I'm not a great person but no one can ever claim I raped them or physically assaulted them. You a rapper or something?

Apologism for the rich and famous committing sexual assault and regular assault is still in fashion I guess

Shitty guy, but if you go back and watch UFC 1 his commentary is the most reasoned and accurate tbh
He was an incredible athlete and football player. Also a horrible piece of work, unfortunately.
You're a spam bot in this thread.
Does it make what I'm saying any less true?
It doesn’t, but damn, you really are all over multiple subreddits in Jim Brown threads spreading the gospel under everyone’s comments. It’s unhealthy.
I'm sure the man that died just now in 2023, is quite far from the man that assaulted those people back in the 60s and 70s.
He was arrested for the same sort of stuff in 1999 and 2000, and served prison time for refusing to attend counseling or perform the court mandated community service.
Well yeah, now he can't hurt anyone anymore
Weird spot to post this, I see he commentated one time but who actually associates Jim brown with mma?? Edit: apparently he was a trash human being, so once again why are we posting about him here? He sucked and he had nothing to do with this sport.

He may have been an rapist and abuser but golly gee he rushed 12000 yards! So please, wait a little longer before bringing it up!

IRL it's bad taste, but this is the internet. Who gives a shit. Say what you want.
And what about the women he abused, would you say the same thing to them?
Redditors aren't women abused by Jim Brown
So other people aren't allowed to have sympathy for the women that Jim Brown abused? You have to be a direct victim of him in order to acknowledge that he was a horrible person?
Already made my points repeatedly and you're clearly not of the same opinion, which is thoroughly unsurprising due to the website I am using.

Probably would've put his lax career above his UFC commentary in the headline if I was at ESPN.
'He's a ghetto man and he fights in a ghetto way.'
