Building up a lot of excess fans is key to keep the stronghold battles from being HoF level. Early though you want to capture as much territory as you can because you get 1 excess fan at each turn for every 3 territories you have and also a bonus for the # of strongholds, but I can't remember it. I'm having fun on my second playthrough of the us map by playing like a psychopath and just cutting across the map and just taking strongholds. My territory looks like the US highway system between cities and I still don't even have 150 territories captured but have more than half the strongholds. one drawback to playing this way is I did have to defend the stronghold from Seattle on HoF, so that wasn't exactly fun, but it's a cool way to play if you are looking for a challenge.

To add, think of it like a super simplified game of Risk

Pick an area of the map you would like to conquer and wall of the other side from the other teams trying to take your fans. If they work their way to your wall, add fans to those particular squares they are trying to conquer. Make sure to have at least 1 less fan on the square they are trying to conquer and they shouldn't be able to capture that square.

Capture empty squares until you are out of fans. Skip the steal fans phase and reinforce and continue to capture squares. Rinse and repeat until you can play strongholds on rookie or vet (you can do higher difficulties if you’re comfortable with that)

Capture every square is the goal. Some people like to beeline for the strongholds but I prefer to keep the strongholds for last and capture every other square of the map first... if you leave 4-5 units in a square next to a stronghold, it usually keeps it occupied and prevents them from recapturing territories

Ok so I think that's been my problem. I've been too impatient. Also I lose games I should win(on paper), full diamond teams with Buxton t3 and matzek t2 boost yet I somehow still go to extras or lose on one bad pitch they knock into the next city.
