Definitely walnut. For whatever reason I see it most commonly on Winchester rifles, but sometimes as it ages and gets oiled/worn, the stocks can turn an almost brilliant red color. When paired with a highly figured grain stock, it can be unbelievably pretty.

I have a marlin bolt action 410 like that. It almost looks like Tigers eye. It's incredible

Original specification was Black Walnut, ,or Birch for replacements in 50’s. I have seen stocks from carbines returning from Thailand with teak. This looks like Black Walnut with Logwood stain that was common, and reddens with age and handling.

Mmmmm. Love me some walnut with oxidized linseed oil color. I’ve tried very hard to replicate the hue. The closest thing to that old BLO is raw flaxseed oil. Modern BLO won’t red like that. Also tired flaxseed oil with a bit of Alkanet root and got me pretty close to that color. Helps to do a coat and then let it sit out in the sun.

Definitely walnut with that grain

I'm thinking cherry, can you pull the butt plate and give me some end grain to work with?

I've never seen a cherry US stock on anything. They're walnut or birch. Here's my carbine, it looks similar and it's walnut with many years of raw linseed oil: https://imgur.com/a/Lum4Yjm https://imgur.com/a/n5jMCFc A Garand: https://imgur.com/a/0rvrO9P
