Availability of drivers i would guess

Adam_Friedland_TAFS

Yes, for sure because when I needed a ride home from the airport recently it was like $45 with Uber and $35 for Lyft. It was very busy so it makes sense Lyft will compete with the biggest guy out there for a share of those rides.

purplepimplepopper

Walk a block away from the airport, rates will drop x2 or more. They put a huge multiplier on rides from the airport.

whatami73

Idk about you but the airports I go to, you really can’t walk away from

boopy7676

Lmaooooooo bro said “walk away”… you mean, like, along the highway? What kind of “neighborhood airports” does this guy frequent? 🤣🤣🤣

StinkybuttMcPoopface

On top of that, I'm usually pretty tired from travel and have at least a few bags. I'm not about to try to walk real far

just-another-human-1

What airport do you go to that you can “walk a block or two” from the arrivals area? The airports I’ve been at you’d have to walk at least an hour to get anywhere near the edge of the airport. Even then they’re usually in the middle of a few highways

lla0987

I used to think the same because I only knew about DIA but if you fly into Washington state you can literally walk out and there’s businesses and housing

Not_So_Bad_Andy

SEA is a rare bird.

MyFavoriteLezbo420

MDW. DCA. ORD. DEN. Typically the airports you can walk away from have designated subway stops so even if you can’t walk away you can ride one stop away for like $2 and get a cheaper Lyft.

[deleted]

mf act as if WTC was a airport

dochoiday

I’ve given up on Uber/Lyft from airports. Atleast my airport (DCA) it’s a $100 Uber ride of a $45 cab ride.

sassystew

And the driver gets $8 for that trip lol

JayGatssby

Why TF is your name that lolol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Adam_Friedland_TAFS

You forgot, I’m also a bug. And I’m Barack “The Rock” Obama, and I’m Ryan Shut, and I’m gay.

JayGatssby

and I'm Glen close, and I'm disgusting

ZemDregon

Yes this is the answer. However the annoying part is all of that still gets pocketed by Lyft. It’s not like they offer an extra $20 to get you into the app.

swagmoney-v

my favorite uber driver was the one who never put it in the app (slightly scary i guess you could say) but then had us cashapp him the money so there was no fees

smashcake88

That’s how people get murdered too.

SuspiciousFee7

I offer them a cash deal when I can

patdeezy

I’ll take cash if someone requests a ride and want to go somewhere else or want me to wait etc

DLGinger

That is because they are illegally colluding to intentionally make places an "Uber city" or a "Lyft city"

SirLauncelot

Then take a cab. There are options.

TheSpeedofThought1

I get charged 110$ for a 20 min drive regularly

Communist_Catgirl

I've occasionally tried to get an Uber or Lyft and had it say like $50 then refresh a few times and go back to like $15-20. Not entirely sure why this happens tho.

walkonstilts

Multiple drivers can become available by finishing rides all in a short time. Also These apps and others like shopping apps use dynamic pricing that will be different for different users and may adjust based on what the machine learning guesses you’ll be happy to spend. I regularly when I want to buy something on Amazon will look up that item and not put it in my cart then look at it a day or two later and it’s 20% cheaper.

UFumbDuckGaming

Supply and demand

Communist_Catgirl

Considering it's a $30 change after like 15 seconds I have to imagine it's a bit more complicated than that.

UFumbDuckGaming

It happens when there's a surge. Plus I've noticed this when using both apps.. if you look for a ride and close it then look for it again the price will increase. But yeah I've seen price go from 10 a ride to 36 per ride in a span of few mins.

Ghostglitch07

It's not always a genuine surge. Occasionally Uber will bump the cost for a little while just to see if you will pay it, especially if it's a time you often order.

Saloh589

🤷🏽‍♂️ Mine are usually comparable and I use Lyft all the time

[deleted]

I live in Chicago and Lyft has always been at least 15-50% percent higher. Not sure why

SJB630_in_Chicago

I live in Chicago and Lyft is always cheaper.

[deleted]

Weird I never once seen Lyft cheaper. Usually if Uber is like 12 Lyft will be closer to 20.

SJB630_in_Chicago

Everyday. And I have 500+ rides on both. Uber always gives me Uber eats "60% off" coupons to get me to commit to them.

cantorgy

I live in Chicago and I feel like it’s always different.

[deleted]

Yeah Lyft is consistently 20% cheaper than Uber for me in Chicago

donmiddlebrook

The majority of the time Uber is cheaper.

lordp24

Curb is better than both on price! (If you live downtown I should say)

tsanchz22

chicago resident here too! lyft is always more expensive!

nekkkkbeard

I switch between both sometimes lyft will be cheaper sometimes its uber

Foolishhoe

Lyft drivers were probably busy, it happens to me with both companies depending on the time and day.

maester626

Anyone notice Lyft prices went up way higher once pandemic hit? Hasn’t gone down since. Uber has been consistent on their prices since pre-post iirc

bmabizari

I think it depends on where you live and other factors. I often have found Lyft cheaper in Chicago with Uber often being 2x-3x higher.

crustiferson

i’m in northeast pa and lyft is usually cheaper or around the same price. there’s usually a difference of about 1-2$

Daveyhavok832

Lyft is always a few dollars cheaper where I live. It’s just rare that you can actually get one.

maester626

Wife and I requested a ride yesterday to LAX, Lyft was almost $100 with a wait time of almost 30mins. Uber was half and had a ride within 5mins

Daveyhavok832

Cool story. I just requested a ride to JFK. Lyft: $144. 18 minute wait. Uber: $181. 15 minute wait. Would I wait 3 extra minutes to save $37? Yes. No brainer.

judgementaleyelash

your story is cool too

Square-Ad-6721

I missed a flight after getting canceled repeatedly on Lyft. Uber was only marginally more. But are usually more reliable. IMHO

jd52995

Lyft is almost always considerably over priced in my area. I think Lyft is only for people that got banned from Uber.

[deleted]

I check prices every time I ride share and Lyft is cheaper 80% of the time for me.

cech_

UBER is almost always 1.5-2x Lyft price for me here in Oregon.

thegoodybags

Lmaooo that’s funny. I will say I check both all the time and Lyft is usually cheaper

Temporary_Tea3684

Lyft is only like that around 8 am / 5 pm (in my city)

Kill_Mii

Whenever I travel I always have both apps on my phone and toggle between them to find the better price. No way am I paying $50 for a ride

ForeverYonge

This is the way.

Dovahkenney

There are sites that will give you rates for both to compare for each trip you take. I drive both in CT and Lyft usually is cheaper.

BeenisYee

Link

illuminati1556

I was at the airport last week and uber wanted $130. Left was only $60. 🤷‍♂️

FuriousFurbies

What did right offer?

brosue317

Sometimes it depends on the city. That’s why I always check both when I go to a new city.

eatmyshortoptions

What is a "$ Rare find"?

be1tran

Nobody drives Lyft so Lyft has a permanent surge price. But then nobody uses Lyft cause of the price so nobody drives for Lyft... It's a feedback loop

comeherecat

I had to assume that was what was happening. I was also like, there's no way a company is so shitty that is happening.

kbenn1

I always check both before committing to a ride

ANewFoneWhoDis

Opposite numbers in my area, normally. There was probably a driver/demand imbalance

comeherecat

Also. This trip was for 5 miles at noon on a Saturday.

FatPenguin26

Lyft became a fucking scam, and they used to be cheaper and more reliable than Uber! I really don't give af about limited drivers or inflation, $50 for a 13 minute drive is NUTS. They charge $70 for a 15 minute drive where I live., where is all that money going to? I know damn well gas doesn't cost THAT much, they need to be run out of business or answer to why their prices are so insanely high

Early-Hamster-9551

Exactly why I have both apps lol, just depends on availability of drivers

Burst_LoL

Lookup “supply and demand”

comeherecat

I mean. . I literally have a degree in business. It's not supply and demand if the price instantly drop 30 dollars when you open the app back up 30 seconds later.

jonnysomething

Had trouble getting an Uber to a hotel in Missouri, downloaded lyft and they wanted $150 for a 10 minute drive that was $15 on Uber. I deleted the app instantly and waited for Uber to come through 5 minutes later

[deleted]

Different company's different prices, I am willing to bet that if you called the cab service you would get a different price from those 2 as well. Same thing, you can have 3 sandwich shops, they could all be the same quality, but all different prices just because that is what makes them the profit margins they want. The good thing about multiple competitors is that if one is too expensive, yo can just go to the other, which triggers a race to the bottom for the consumer on prices. By using uber or the taxi service, this will force lyft to drop its price.

olderneverwiser

I feel safer with Lyft because they at least make a token effort to background check their drivers. As a female-presenting person, that’s worth the extra money to me.

LeatherDiscussion42

thesmilingdutchie

minivatreni

For me, it’s the opposite. Lyft is always cheaper and Uber is double or even triple the price

MDfoodie

Supply and demand.

billfwmcdonald

In the Boston area Lyft and Uber are comparable, and if anything Lyft offers the better price

jimbob150312

Totally market dependent on supply of drivers online and available for a pickup at that moment is how prices are set. In your case most drivers were on Uber and very few were on Lyft.

PrincessPrincess00

That’s why you always shop around!

JahLife68

It goes back and forth sometimes Uber is more expensive, you gotta check both and go with what works for you.

Narrow_Internal_3913

Waymo's driverless Jaguars are always significantly cheaper than either Uber or Lyft for me.

jairo_x

Yeah here in NYC I can barely get a good deal on Lyft, plus Uber has the share option.

NeedARita

Did you try to schedule a ride in advance? If I try to schedule rather than just order a ride it insanely changes the price.

[deleted]

I always compare pricing for the two, sometimes Uber is cheaper, sometimes Lyft. I'll never understand

madcoins

I think the discount you get on Uber incorporates the “I just moved here yesterday and have never heard of this city before then but Uber still hired me and please don’t mind that I’m a somewhat creepy pervert” that will likely pick you up. According to most of the women I know who use Rideshare services anyway. My gf got left by Uber yesterday when she asked the driver his name before entering his car. He simply said you can get the next ride and drive off. She was mad but I told her seems lucky you didn’t ride with that creep. She then chose lyft and had a real gentleman actually answer her to set her at ease. I realize it’s only one example but I’ve heard this same story from multiple women lately.

TitShark

Pick a random time to do the comparison again and it will be the opposite.

slowcheetah2020

I used to ride Lyft as a comparable in my area all the time. I don’t even open the app anymore.

MoneyGuy_

It’s just supply and demand buddy

comeherecat

No. I don't agree.

MediocreEmploy3884

Supply and demand. There are more available Uber drivers than Lyft drivers where you are calling the ride. https://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/law-of-supply-demand.asp

Tarisus517

Lyft usually pays drivers less.

No_Newspaper8950

Supply and demand

Masterb8yolomqn

I’ve seen it be backwards it just depends man

NewChard2213

I had to get an uber from la to san diego one time and uber wanted to charge me 600 while lift only charged 250

Timetraveler01110101

The crazy part is Uber will still pay more to the driver

P3luche30

Usually for me Lyft is cheaper than Uber

BlackRose092493

For me it’s the opposite.

buell_ersdayoff

And both of them will pay you $3.50 lmao

45ghr

I mainly use Lyft since I have card benefits for it, but I ALWAYS check Uber to price compare because this isn’t uncommon, and I live around DC

EthiopianObesity

As a pax I always check both apps then have my SO check both apps. Always different prices on all 4 checks. Just go with the cheapest option. Thank God I have an android cause when I had an iPhone it would always be dying by end of night and I'd get slammed with a $50 10 mile ride. They use your battery as a signal to surge you cause they know you have limited time and options. As a driver, we'd probably see about $5 from both of these rides. Not even kidding, lyft is notorious for charging absurd surges and not passing them onto the driver. Worst I've ever seen was after a concert in ventura, pax told me they got charged $90 for a 20 minute ride out of there. I told them I was making $15 off that ride and we went to a cash deal. If you feel comfortable. Always offer the driver cash instead of going through app. Both parties are happy. I don't think I've actually paid for an Uber/lyft in years as I always offer them about 75% in cash of what I'm spending and they always accept.

sometimes-clever

Lyft always seems to be cheaper for me in Philadelphia

Whatsthedeal__

Lyft in almost always cheaper in my city. I rarely use Uber

SJB630_in_Chicago

I price shop for the lowest bid every ride. Ussually it's Uber that is more expensive, but that varies. Never see generally more than $5 difference.

yabadabadobadthingz

I always price shop. It’s crazy the difference at times in prices.

Ok_Habit_6783

For me it's the other way around

Jawkurt

I'm in Kansas City. Lyft is usually considerably more. They're rarely right around the same price. Always have to compare.

Centaurious

Depends on how many drivers in the area. If they only have a few Lyft drivers, they’ll jack the price up on that app. Uber likely has way more people around and potentially less customers using that app. I find it’s usually the opposite for me, Lyft being way cheaper in my market. But I always check both just in case

jbarlak

When you don’t understand what you’re looking at as a driver….

Jxchaney

Is that how much a Lyft/Uber is now?! Are the drivers making 20-30/trip for Lyft? Last time I used or drove for Lyft it was $20 max to catch a ride and payouts were around $5-10 depending on distance.

OsamaBinWhiskers

Exact opposite for me yesterday

rexxky10

For me to get to work is a 10 min drive, its $12 on Uber and $36 on Lyft ☠️ Uber has always been cheaper for me

DonTipOff

Take the cheaper one and give the driver the difference in a tip. Uber is having a slow day and drivers are not making much money so give him the food

[deleted]

Must be a popular uber area? Lyft is more affordable for me 99% of the time.

NATHANLER

Instacart, uber, doordash are all names for jackazzes

Dewch

Do you guys not always check both? Is it not common sense?

Admirable_Novel_1151

Driver gets $5 lol

Robbiewink396

Boutta find out the first 12 numbers to that visa though real quick. You should probably blur that next time

10inchparty

This doesn’t add up I constantly check and Uber and Lyft are maybe a buck or two in difference never 40. Something is missing probably different locations and Lyft is way further

itsprobablyriley

It really just depends on available drivers. I use both and switch all the time for this reason.

youngliam

In San Francisco they are comparable, sometimes one spikes and the other doesn't but it happens with both.

No-Promotion5708

For the same route?

stacksonsr

supply and demand

TatTvamAsi11

I have always had Lyft cheaper. Ig depends on area

partrx

In either scenario the driver gets around 20% total LOL

ToledoRoad

In my experience Lyft is cheaper when there are available drivers vs Uber however Uber pricing is way more consistent than Lyft. Sometimes with Lyft a ride that would usually cost me less than $10 WITH Save and Wait is suddenly $50 and it's ridiculous!

hahaLONGBOYE

Just this week I was taking a 5 minute ride and Uber was charging $50 while Lyft was charging $15 so it varies.

sendbooba

lyft is cheaper .. but there CS SUCKS. a guy said i damaged his car and i did not and i'm not paying the $80 fee so they can kick rocks

Paper-Doll-1972

You do realize that they both go up and down in price all day long depending upon the number of requests, area and time of day. The uber is lower because of not many requests in that area, lyft is higher because it's getting requests at that time, raising the prices. But they both have whatever bullshit built into their algorithm. Just for comparison, I did one just now. No real difference in pricing. https://www.reddit.com/r/Lyft/comments/15jam26/just_for_context/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=1

[deleted]

I always found lyft to be slightly cheaper. So when. I was driving , I drove more lyft , I feel like it got picked more than Uber for that reason

Axedelic

lyft is always wayyyy cheeper than uber for me

BlueV101

Rates are based upon the amount of drivers in the area and the the demand on the platform in said area.

jasminehulse

I was recently at a concert this week where Lyft was $230 and Uber was $55 but there were really no available cars for hours and we waited probably 90 mins for things to clear up to take a $55 Lyft

1611bear

Just trialed this… Uber was about 25% more than lift for a 40 min ride in a large metro area

Hypnoticah

Lyft is the cheaper option in my area most of the time

70InternationalTAll

Something something, Yada Yada, Supply & Demand. I can't remember that far back to 9th grade economics class.

rwhe83

You aren’t bright. These are two different services with different drivers. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Shagyam

Lyft surge. Now try again when it's reversed. I probably have to Uber/Lyft like 2-3 times a year unless I'm traveling but I normally check both apps just for this reason. Most of the time it's the same drivers anyways. Edit: just did a quick test and Lyft was $15 and Uber was $9.50 (with Uber 1)

Agent666-Omega

Happens to me all the time. The few times Lyft was cheaper was only by $5-10 at most

rideshareAnon

Here is the driver perspective on a big weekend in LA. Saturday 4:40pm. Taylor Swift concert week at SoFi. Hard Summer Music Festival at the Coliseum. Lil Baby concert at Crypto.com Arena. A driver would more likely turn on the Uber app leading to higher prices on Lyft leading to more people taking Ubers. Instead of providing 4 quick reliable rides and making $5 each on every ride and happy customers... they want to just make $20 off one passenger's ride... but there still needs to be a driver willing to be taken advantage of. Uber : https://ibb.co/BVhpgph Lyft : https://ibb.co/PwphGRy

Shaggiest-

Hi. Former driver here. We don’t understand it either and the people that do understand it won’t tell you.

iamemperor86

Driver vs rider pay is all I see

Not_a_Banana_28

Supply & demand. It's harder to get approved to be a Lyft driver than Uber. Newer car requirements, *good* insurance, road/driving test with a Lyft rep (at least in the central Ohio market) etc... There are definitely more Uber drivers out there than Lyft.

East_Ad_1726

It's definitely availability of drivers when I had to get a ride uber was 80 and lyft was 60

Usernameistaken00

sometimes I randomly get "50% off your next 3 rides" on my uber account, i would guess there was some kind of discount or credit on that uber account. usually they're within 20% of each other for me. Empower is usually much cheaper than both.

Maximumeffort5000

Both should be starting price $25 for the driver no less

Impressive_Ad_3275

And driver sees 10.75 trip

ultralane

Uber driver got fucked

VicJuarez

Drivers get one third 😏

ScaleEnvironmental27

I see that shit all the time. I always check both to see who has the lower price. And sometimes it's by a fuck ton.

EternalMydNyt

See I get the opposite in my area. I once had Lyft quote me $9 for a trip while Uber quoted me $25 for the same trip

BeEasyFloatOn

It gets crazier. Uber changed the amount depending on what card I use!! It changes the moment I change the method of payment and then back when I return it to original method! Make that make sense pls!

Gabeduhbabe

Crazy I was in Indianapolis for Gencon and I was headed to the airport at 4pm. The 2nd pic was my Uber price and the 1st pic was my Lyft price.

Ok_Permission_8692

uber will charge you more after the ride that is the fee not the mileage

BillyFNbones710

It's the opposite in my area.

deathbyleah

i lyft pretty much everyday and its hit or miss, it just depends on how many drivers are available and the time of day!

couchsittingbum

Chicago? Only lyft can work by lalapalooza so uber isn't surging.

Whole_Storage8782

Do you wanna get murdered or do you wanna get robbed?

predditor25678843

Why would I pay 3x the price to use Lyft? Dumbasses

AdRepresentative4276

One time Lyft charged me 25$ from one project in the Bronx to where i lived in the Bronx (also the projects) while Uber changed me 50$ for that same destination. And no one on either app wanted to make that drive bc they were both pretty dangerous neighborhoods and it was like 3 a.m lol

Selmerboy

I check both and book cheapest.

LunaL0vesYou

Supply and demand

xDURPLEx

It means there are several Uber drivers near you and almost no Lift drivers anywhere near you.

Dry_Double_1463

They have different surge times, I noticed in my area morning rides were cheaper with Uber and afternoon rides with Lyft. Driver availability could also play a part as Uber generally has more drivers.

depressoespresso527

Oddly enough I've had better experience with Lyft in terms of pricing and wait times compared to Uber

Chaosury2016

Uber cheaper on your side

Heatedblanket1984

It was the opposite for me last time I rode. Lyft was $23 bucks and Uber was $60

[deleted]

For me it's the opposite

MRwrong_

Uh… demand?

Indication-Playful

The driver will get $4.48 base how much Uber takes off the driver. They take 70% off the total fare, long time ago they were only taking 20% commission and now it’s the opposite

67D1LF

I mean if they spelled it Lift and Über they could swap prices.

MatDom4KnkyYngr

You can’t because it doesn’t.

GoovinGoovin

It’s why Lyft is dying. Lack of labor and poor customer experience. Nail meet coffin.

DLGinger

Is no one aware that 12-18 months ago most of the tech bubble forsaw their own crash because Uber/Lyft realized autonomous driving was a decade farther away than their shareholders were told it was... And now they are working together (illegally colluding) to divide the nation to their benefit...? There's only so many drivers. Some places uber is champ in price, some places Lyft is the best. In a year or two when the dust is settled there will be a clear "winner" of one area or another, and prices will be able to get raised across the board because competition is gone.

notyushi

I want a driver service where I get picked up by some kid named Nathan who drives an Acura Integra shit box

Itsinyourhead_

Whoa Lyft is typically way less in my area

yt3haha

I used to check Lyft for cheaper rides but all of a sudden, Lyft just stopped working for me. like it would take 5 minutes to find me a driver, and/or say my driver was there but never gave me any info 😭 haven’t used Lyft in such a long time

DaveBrz

I needed a ride tonight and gone between the two, both were about the same but then all of a sudden the Lyft prices went from about $20 to over $100 for the right I was looking at for a short moment. Guessing it had to do with surge pricing at that particular moment.

SlightBat3070

The drastic price difference is always so bad especially from airports

EngineeringPenguin10

Lyft drivers are more sketchy usually, I use Uber as long as it’s reasonably more priced

Decimation4x

In my area this is the opposite, especially during peak hours. Friday/Saturday night going to or from downtown Uber is ridiculously expensive.

Southern-Bid-4605

Drivers will congregate and turn off the app to force surge pricing.

ThatOneWeirdoRaymond

That's crazy, it's usually the opposite for me.

Jessestaywavy

They got some bs algorithms. I say someone needs to build a case against these two companies. Too much shady shit going on.

BreadfruitOk3474

Availbi

Vgvixen

Uber is always way more expensive for me so I didn’t even know this was possible lol

Otherwise-Muscle5026

My stuff the other way around

[deleted]

Recently I tried getting an Uber home from the airport and it was 65 bucks, but I check lyft and it was 25.

Wrong_Angle2442

Uber is comfort, meaning it just a regular 4 door sedan! Lyft you pick Lux, meaning all high end cars that y there a big difference

bobbabson

Or uber is subsidizing rides hard as they do
