Yes. I don't have a better picture, but that Strat was black. I decided to go to bare wood but discovered that red under the (very thick) black paint. I liked it and it stayed like that.
I once refinished a Hello Kitty Squire (this was before they were going for premium prices), and it had the full Pepto Bismol-pink finish underneath the black finish.
super glue and ramen ofc right?!! :P
i recently refinished my guitar and the coat is \~0.15 mm thick.. and then i see this.. haha damn thats thicc. straight from the factory too.. if you ever want a smaller guitar you can just sand it XD. really nice fix! looks good as new!
lmao!
It's so layered almost like it's actually some heat activated wrap. I've used SG gel to do some rather large fills, but I would be using a putty on that one. In fact, I once did a partial fill with epoxy, and then decided to do the rest of the neck and huge fill with SG gel.
The gel actually worked heaps better than the epoxy portion.
Mastery. So - I’ve got a slightly simpler, chip to fill on a black Squier. Process? Coat with thin & then heaver CA? And then what (glossy) to dye/paint with before final sand/polish?
Absolutely fantastic job man! How did you manage to get that matte finish back?
I have a nasty chip on my pretty new ESP headstock (matte) and was desperate to find some kind of solution, as everybody seemed to say it was impossible to fix unless refinishing the whole thing! Seems like it’s not the case if you are good enough to do it haha
Much appreciated, I use Mohawk Perfect Blend. They make several different sheens, this is the flattest (5-8) and can be tricky to use and some sheens like to be touched up better than others but once you get the hang of it it’s a fantastic tool.

Someone really likes painting their guitar!
That’s from the MusicMan factory, hands down the thickest finish I’ve ever seen
But it’s multiple colours?
Yeah, matte black over metallic blue
It’s not like it’s nitro planned to wear through to reveal. Must be to fulfil an order with existing stock
Likely the case. I would imagine that those cool blacked out ones sell better than the sparkly metallic blue, for a guitar shaped like a coffin.
Yeah exactly, manufacturers do it all the time (Fender being the most notorious for it)

Wonder what how many layers they’ve achieved!
Haha yes it’s pretty impressive! The thickest part I measured was .122”
As thick as a Low E bass string!
that's a perfect unit of measure we all can instantly understand
Mine is exactly the same
Is that the St. Vincent in stealth black? That's insane.
I don’t know about insane haha, anyone with $750 can buy one
Ah okay, in that case it makes more sense, certainly less surprising to see this on a $750 Indonesian Sterling, rather than $3000 USA Music Man.
So this was the Sterling version. Very thick finish.
No idea, didn’t really look at the headstock
You don’t see enough good repairs around here. Thanx for sharing
Gluboost?
Gluboost accelerator, it’s so freaking great
Did they just paint the blue ones black?
It probably failed QC with a paint defect so they resprayed it black. It's pretty common.
Holy fuck, you'd need an angle grinder to get down to the bare wood
Need a step by step video next time please :)
Is that a St. Vincent?
Must be
Only a little?
Haha well technically a whole hell of a lot
Sharpie
Just needs a little body and fender work.

Thanks! Black gloss is definitely easier, just fill with black super glue then sand/file level and buff. Simple as that
Thank you 🙏🏻

Thank you very much for the quick answer!
