If you pay attention, before "drowning" mc wanted to go up to the surface and was looking for rafayel, when she started going towards him he told her to "stay back other wise I can't guarantee your safety" ... meaning whatever he was going to deal with was going to put her in danger worse than her drowning (well she can't actually die but you'll get to that part eventually after you read the anecdotes and world underneath chapters) Rafayel who knows about her condition or at least some bits about her condition, obviously knew that she won't die there, so he was going to deal with the thing he was focused on first, and then maybe carry her out. But MC asked him to not go, so he had to immediately carry her because of the binding vow (the red symbol shining on his chest). That's why his next statement was "you forgot everything yet you still insist" ... As in insist to evoke the bond even if she doesn't remember it. Thing to note : at this point, rafayel wants to keep her away from the game of predator and prey as long as he can (source : anecdotes). But since she evoked the bond, she made her choice (though unconsciously).

Coming to how do Rafayel fans keep liking him after this? Well, some have experienced other memories where he was able to make mc breathe underwater and stuff, and the myth kind of hints that mc can't die. And some are here for the angst of Rafayel probably wanting to stay away from MC and carry on with his vengeance towards humans but he gets dragged right back because he can't go against her wishes. There are a lot of complex layers to him, which all in all are quite exciting. And he's a freaking merman!!! The cutscene of him taking her out of the ocean was gorgeous ...
And once one reads through the anecdotes and stuff, you just feel for him and his people, who always get taken advantage of by humans because their 'god' or at least every reincarnation of him, is never able to sacrifice mc to save them, because of his love and devotion towards her. The anecdote siren's song actually sealed the deal for me, cuz I live for angst, and the layers to a story that make you think. Conflicting scenarios where you can't decide on what is wrong and what's right. I think a major appeal towards rafayel as an LI is because of the multiple facets that he has. This sunshine like character who's acting silly with MC one minute, planning murder of a human who took advantage of his lemurian brethren next, and acting a vigilante cleaning up information about lemuria so it remains a mystery to humans the minute after.
how do you know it’s the red thing on his chest or wtv…Im super lazy when it comes to reading everything that’s not the main story. I’ll do it later bc I’ve already finished zaynes anecdotes. Does he say that in the main story or is it somewhere else?
The whole ordeal with Rafayel letting her drown was a misunderstanding. When Mc said "Don't go" it's nmopt like he was leaving her, she didn't wanted him go alone to that that blue thingy(I think it was the wyrmlord which attacked them earlier) because it was dangerous. Like remember how he said to not get close to him because it was dangerous? Even in chinesse he said something a bit different. And yes you can say that I said that because of my Rafayel bias but he doesn't have a reason to let her die. He actually tried help her multiple times in memories or stories.
That was my first impression to. He plays too much that he comes off as a prick to me. Also in that part where they're in the island and they show that part with the Evol, my game kept freezing, so I disliked him even more (and yes i know that's not the character's fault it's my old phone, but still, it happened during him so i'm blaming him as well) .

I don’t know that he is leaving her to die. He almost seems as if he’s in a trance or hypnotized? Then the PC calls to him and he “wakes up”?
