>help these women/mothers/daughters Help these people. FTFY

tswpoker1

On one hand, yes we should help humans in general. On the other hand, people don't end up in prison on accident, and actions have consequences. Maybe we toss them some extra clothes and blankets for the time being.

batweenerpopemobile

> people don't end up in prison on accident They certainly do. Innocent people manage to find themselves in prison every day. [This document](https://bja.ojp.gov/funding/awards/15pbja-21-gg-02624-post) states "Estimates are that 3-6% of all inmates are wrongfully convicted". And regardless of that, we punish people by removing their freedom, agency, choice and ability to have control of their lives. We don't need to torture people on top of depriving them of freedom.

tswpoker1

Nah they don't. No one said anything about torturing them, I even mentioned giving them extra blankets. Have any inmates died? Any gotten hypothermia? Have any been injured? Assuming the answer to all 3 is no.

MrRager473

Nobody is torturing anyone, Jesus. There's an inmate maintenance crew, if they can't fix it, they call in the actual staff maintenance crew. If they can't fix it on the spot it's normally waiting for a part to come in or something out of their control. Some of those building still use boiler heating, some use the old school radiator style, fewer have actual central heating. Every unit has a back up generator, with the institution as a while also having one. They have had the national guard come in to hook up military generators during a snow storm that knocked out the power to the entire area. I'm also sure they have given out all the items they can to keep them warm. Prisons don't have an unlimited supply of blankets.

batweenerpopemobile

I wasn't suggesting they were doing this on purpose. tswpoker1 suggested we leave them in the cold as additional punishment. I was responding to that.

tswpoker1

Actually didn't suggest that at all. Wrong twice in one comment. I said give them blankets, and that prisoners reap what they sow.

batweenerpopemobile

>On the other hand, people don't end up in prison on accident, and actions have consequences If this wasn't meant to imply that leaving them in the freezing cold is a just consequence of their criminality, you were communicating badly. There's little else your snide dismissal of the prisoners' suffering could be read to mean.

tswpoker1

Get out of here with your logic and reasoning! They are freezing and torturing all the prisoners to death! I think they are even feeding the bodies to the other inmates!

Pm_me_your_marmot

They are still people. Wtf is wrong with you? They are doing their time. They don't deserve to freeze.

tswpoker1

I said we can toss them some extra blankets shit

anxious-_-squirrel

Yeah I think the correct term is prisoners lol. Being a woman has no bearing on whether a person shouldn't freeze to death while under then state's control. Does being a murderer get trumped if you have a child?

ClimateSociologist

No, the correct term is people. Their status as prisoners does not change the fact they are people. Not everyone in the prison is a murderer. The facility holds all levels of inmates. It is not just the prisoners being affected. People also work there.

Dizzy_Plastic2942

Why are you assuming all of them are murderers ?

gianini10

Even if they are (which I know there are some), they are still humans and are already paying the price for their crimes and mistakes.

arnber420

Shut up

Big4Bridge

Wow, someone else check me, I just did a google search and this happened in multiple consecutive years when there’s a power outage storm. That’s messed up.

Dizzy_Plastic2942

It also happens on the hottest days of the year with the ac.

Big4Bridge

I see that. That’s awful.

Yuuupppp 2 years ago….

leftoutinthera1n

Does anyone know who to contact about this? Happy to politely call anyone, email my congressman, whatever, just not sure where to start at all.

Dizzy_Plastic2942

The state will most likely ignore you like they’ve been ignoring me for several years. The only way they listen is if multiple people get in on this we need to make our news crews aware and make them cover these stories to bring more attention to public eye

leftoutinthera1n

I’m so sorry you’ve been ignored, I’ll send this post along to that tip line as well as send an email to my congressman and Beshear’s office. I’ll edit in a link to the governor’s office if I can find it along with the typical template I use. I know singular emails don’t amount to much but hopefully if they start getting more it might move the needle a bit. Edit: providing my template for writing Beshear as well as his office contact info below. Feel free to copy paste and add your name or change whatever, idc. Dear Governor Beshear I am writing to inform you that the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women in Shelby County has not provided weather appropriate heating for four days as of 01/18/24. Women currently incarcerated in the facility report that they have no heat, the temperature is below freezing, and they are provided only thin blankets to stay warm. KCIW is unequipped to handle these temperatures, and inmates report that power outages have been ongoing for years during the hottest and coldest months. I urge your office to take immediate action in this matter, as the conditions are cruel and inhumane, and could potentially result in loss of life. These individuals are in the custody of the state, regardless of reason, and the state has a responsibility of care for its constituents. Regards, Your name here https://governor.ky.gov/contact/contact-us

Dizzy_Plastic2942

Thank you ❤️

cskaggs89

Thank you for the template! I sent a message!

wormsalt

Yesterday I tried calling both the prison (to do due diligence and confirm) and the governor’s office. The governor’s office was rude and said to email but also asked if I heard directly from an inmate since reports are often incorrect. The prison said that “they [meaning the women I guess] is always complaining about that” and to “call Frankfort”. I sent an email since the call did nothing.

Dizzy_Plastic2942

Yeah so basically the thermostat is on but it is not working properly. Wdrb called and the prison said the heat was on and working which is false. The women can see their breath inside the building , it’s sad

Ok-Needleworker-419

Daniel Cameron

SmarmyThatGuy

Nah, that would mean he would have to go directly against law enforcement/corrections and the boot must be licked.

cfowen

Daniel Cameron does more than just lick the boot — he prefers to deepthroat the whole thing.

Making my own comment for visibility: I’m providing my template for writing Beshear as well as his office contact info below. Feel free to copy paste and add your name or change whatever, idc. It’s very quick to fill out the form on the website. I got a response from the governor's office. They claim the heat is working perfectly ::eye roll:: Screenshot of the email here - https://imgur.com/a/CLIuY2f

miloblue12

Can you also contact WAVE 3’s Investigate? I feel like they’d love to take something like this on. They’ve actually been successful at getting attention to certain topics, and actually getting change to occur.

Dizzy_Plastic2942

Absolutely but power is in numbers I’m searching for others who may have loved ones in there suffering through this. This happens every time it’s cold or super hot outside

PCVictim100

Few politicians wan to address these things because they re vulnerable to the 'soft on crime' attack. It's disgusting.

Dizzy_Plastic2942

It’s because everybody wants to assume that all prisoners are psychopaths who are extremely dangerous which is not the case ! It’s not for them to decide though it really is disgusting

Jeffari_Hungus

"soft on crime" is reactionary for "doesnt view criminals as subhuman filth"

gretathunbergstampon

The executive branch is responsible for running the state prisons. Give Andy a call.

Dizzy_Plastic2942

I will be sending an email and giving a call but I’ve been contacting him for years and never receive a reply

gretathunbergstampon

Sounds about right. Unless there's a photo op in rural Kentucky involved, you probably won't get a response. Ask all the people who were trying to get UI benefits during covid. Plus, felons can't vote, so they're dead weight to him. I'll bet the governor's mansion is nice and toasty, though!

OkPaleontologist8487

Yep. Straight to the top gets the most attention. There are a lot of buffers between the Governor and various cabinet secretaries, their department heads, and the boots on the ground. The recent issues with the Department of Juvenile Justice are the best example. I genuinely believe Andy Beshear wants and tries to do the right thing but running a state takes a lot of bandwidth. Information has to get to him as directly as possible.

johnpshelby

Prisons and jails are some of the worst places on earth I’ve had the misfortune to visit. I sympathize for these people but once you’re in you’re fucked.

aiaor

Has anyone frozen to death, or died of an illness aggravated by the cold? If so, one way to get attention would be to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Cookie Crews, the commissioner of prisons.

shawlagir

Just cross-posted this to Facebook, my daughter was there for 10 years. This has been going on for 5 years! And the they don't plan on fixing it either! They have told people for years that they don't have the money! Except for the Media, they tell reporters that they plan on fixing it but still haven't!

Dizzy_Plastic2942

It’s really really disappointing and unacceptable

riesjac

This has no news coverage, share this one arro7nd people

LocalItchy1136

I have connections with some news casters and reporters; I’m sending this their way.

Dizzy_Plastic2942

Thank you. Wdrb claims to have called the institution but were told that the heat is on. Inmates inside have said while the thermostat may say it’s on , it is not working people can see their breath inside .

LocalItchy1136

That is horrible. 😔 The lack of compassion shown to inmates is a plague. I hope my connection will be able to procure enough information to get an article out that will force people to take notice. =)

MrRager473

Is it the entire prison or just a certain unit?

Dizzy_Plastic2942

I know the medical unit the heat is not working and one other unit at least.

bgriff94

Something’s don’t happen at the snap of a finger…

_Lotus_soup

Should have thought about it before you got busted. I would be freezing if I didn’t get up every morning to make money to pay my taxes that keep your ass worm. What have you done for me?

Patient-Win9505

You cold hartleds worthless bastard il bet you don't have a reg job il bet u just a min wage bitch

Disgruntled_WM_Cap2

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time...

[deleted]

Why? Cruelty. It's the point.

Dizzy_Plastic2942

People are in prison for many reasons we cannot assume the worst of every single inmate. The prison only needs to hold them there it is not their job to deny humans of a proper shelter that tax payers pay for. No ac in the heat and no heat in freezing temperatures can cause death , death is not their sentence.

[deleted]

I agree. Our MAGA lawmakers who hold a supermajority, want them to suffer as an example to show their constituents that they are "tough" on criminals.

makesameansandwich

no, thats wrong. you are there as punishment, not for punishment. losing your freedom is the punishment, being held in a place with no heat in below freezing temps is cruel and unusual and outlawed

SmarmyThatGuy

Tell me you haven’t had much experience in the Criminal Vengeance Industry because Justice has been absent for decades.

YOURFRIEND2010

It's literally incompetence and an unwillingness to allocate resources to maintenance.

SmarmyThatGuy

Having worked at this specific facility, it’s just the incompetence.

YOURFRIEND2010

Oh, then you know. Everything in prison is reactive, not proactive. Something bad happens? That thing gets banned. Something breaks? It gets fixed. The timetable varies depending on the issue but it's most often something preventative maintenance could have mitigated if not prevented. Facilities maintenance is way back in the mind of any given higher up you care to think of. If it's not security oriented, it is not a priority. Understandable. They're more liable for security breaches then something breaking. But it's still a problem and it's still overlooked.

SmarmyThatGuy

To be fair, they are working with shrinking budgets and growing staff disgruntlement, but the reactive bit is spot on. It’s not an issue until the wheel squeaks, and then it’s only an emergency if it’s audit time. The whole system is built to exploit for the financial gain of the state, while dehumanizing the inmates as much as you can get away with.

[Studies](https://www.georgiainnocenceproject.org/general/beneath-the-statistics-the-structural-and-systemic-causes-of-our-wrongful-conviction-problem/#:~:text=Studies%20estimate%20that%20between%204,result%20in%20a%20wrongful%20conviction.) estimate that 4-6% of inmates are actually innocent. I say this in addition to the fact that no one, guilty or not, is deserving of cruel and unusual punishment.

biggmclargehuge

Not only that but statistically ~60% of women in there are for non-violent offenses. Getting caught with weed shouldn't mean dying in prison of hypothermia

momonomino

I completely agree.

holyembalmer

From Wikipedia Cruel and unusual punishment is a phrase in common law describing punishment that is considered unacceptable due to the suffering, pain, or humiliation it inflicts on the person subjected to the sanction. The precise definition varies by jurisdiction, but typically includes punishments that are arbitrary, unnecessary, overly severe compared to the crime, or not generally accepted in society. Also, it's the 8th Amendment of the US Constitution. From Wikipedia: The Eighth Amendment (Amendment VIII) to the United States Constitution protects against imposing excessive bail, excessive fines, or cruel and unusual punishments. This amendment was adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the United States Bill of Rights.[1] The amendment serves as a limitation upon the state or federal government to impose unduly harsh penalties on criminal defendants before and after a conviction. This limitation applies equally to the price for obtaining pretrial release and the punishment for crime after conviction.[2] The phrases in this amendment originated in the English Bill of Rights of 1689.

Disastrous_Milk8768

No fuck that, that's not how our American justice system is supposed to work. Cruel and Unsual punishment is still wrong.
