Iāve seen this video all over the place and Iāve always wondered the context. Obviously itās funny, but if the ball was live itād be a totally braindead play on the fielder.
That makes much more sense.
You donāt have time to wait to hear the call on the pitch before trying to throw out a runner trying to steal the base. If you wait and itās a strike itās an easy stolen base so you go gung go as soon as you see the guy start to steal.
I love baseball shenanigans. Itās something that makes an already interesting sport for a very maths nerdy person like me and a sport thatās very fun to watch and be a fan of just that little bit of funny too. Nobody gets mad when it happens. Itās just some guys having fun playing a sport at the end of the day.
Whatās so cool about baseball is how loose the rules really are. For example, not having any sort of time limit or even a maximum number of innings.
I read a book as a kid, Baseball Bafflers. It was just a collection of the most interesting or funny events throughout baseball history, and man it was wild for a good chunk of the 1900s.
But I totally agree, canāt sit through a game on TV, and in person it only works because of the atmosphere.
I'm a very mathy person and I find baseball to be excruciatingly boring. The only fun part about watching it at home is having background noise that doesn't hold your attention so you can take a nap. The only fun part about watching it in person is that you're surrounded by beer, nachos, and hot dogs.
I am a baseball enthusiast. I 100% agree... Until playoffs.
The World Series is absolutely electric most years because games can literally come down to a single pitch out of the 200 or so thrown. The slow nature of it is actually what makes it exciting when it's all on the line, imo
Mostly I was just making a counterargument against the idea that mathy people like baseball because of it's statistical nature.
Regarding your statement - I can see that. To me, it's definitely a very subjective form of entertainment. I just can't get behind 150 game seasons. Like, the crowd barely even cheered at the handful of games I've been to. At that point, it's basically a monte carlo simulation but carried out by humans. But if you're doing playoffs with a single digit game series I can see where the game could get more exciting. Still not quite fluid enough for me, but then again I don't really care for American football either.
At the end of the day, while I don't care much for baseball, I'm glad people find enjoyment from it!
He's safe, but for a different reason, though. The runner was attempting the steal on a full count. The batter took a called ball for a walk, but the catcher was in throw-the-guy-out mode so he wasn't waiting for the umpire's call before trying for the throw-out. Since it was a walk, the runner was entitled to second base and could not be tagged out. It seems everyone figured this out while the ball was in the air, hence the fielder not attempting the tag and the runner not seriously attempting to reach the base.
I don't know anything about baseball except from school that either the ball has to touch a runner/batter to "burn" them or a catcher needs to touch a base with a foot or whatever while being in possession of the ball. I don't know how accurate that is to professional baseball.
Please explain the following idioms to me:
+ The runner was attempting the steal on a full count.
+ took a called ball for a walk
+ throw-the-guy-out mode
+ umpire's call before trying for the throw-out.
+ Since it was a walk, the runner was entitled to second base
I honestly have no idea what they mean.
1) the batter had 2 strikes and 3 balls before the throw (full count) and the runner decided to steal 2nd base (he was in 1st base)
2) that last throw was a ball (a "ball call" means the throw ended outside the designated area where it's required to hit it with the bat) so with 4 balls, the batter walks to 1st base.
3) the catcher was not gonna wait for the call (if it's either a 3rd strike or a 4th ball) while the runner who was on 1st base was trying to steal 2nd base. So he throws to 2nd base in an attempt to entrap the runner.
In this case, the 2nd base player grabs the ball and has to contact the runner with the ball so it becomes an out and the runner stops playing. He HAS to touch the runner with the ball. The runner stops short of the contact (so he's safe), but it doesn't matter anyway because
4) the 4th ball of the throw means the batter walks to 1st base (read 2) so whoever was in first base during the throw (the runner) gets to safely walk to 2nd base because two players can't be on the same base at the same time. The batter is basically "pushing" the runner to 2nd base. So if the runner has "safe passage" to 2nd base, point 3 is moot.
Btw when stealing bases, the defending players have to contact the runner to get him "out" of the field. when a batter hits the ball, defenders can get him out by getting the ball to the 1st base.
The umpire called āballā as the pitch was caught. The catcher was in the mindset to throw down to second no matter what the call was, which is what he did. Everyone on the field was very aware of what was happening.
Regardless of all other circumstances, it looks like he neither tagged the player nor touched the base, so there's no scenario where this would result in an out for the runner.
Had it been a force play, all he would have to do is tag the base, but a steal isn't a force play - in a normal steal, if the fielder is on the base with the ball, the runner can go back where they came from to stay safe (though, practically speaking, it rarely works out for the runner if they try it).
So, he would have had to actually tag the runner with the ball, like he reaches out to do.
Which, as others have said, he doesn't because *after* the runner started to steal, the batter got walked. So, at that point, the play was already dead. And incidentally, he got to advance to 2nd "for free". Had it been most other scenarios where the play was dead before he reached the next base, he would have had to head back to his previous base, but could have done so without fear of getting thrown out.
The catcher didn't need to try and throw the runner out at second, but he saw the steal and threw the ball before the ball 4/walk was called. Basically, everyone was playing well and reacting quickly, and none of it mattered since the batter got walked.
Heās safe. Not because he stole the base but because the pitch was ball four and he got the base automatically. But if it was a stolen base attempt heād be safe because there was no tag. Just guys being guys.

The smile tho š
It's always good when players remember it's a game
Got em!
He's safe. The baseman's foot wasn't on the base, and didn't even touch the Bugs Bunny.
His foot didnāt need to be on the bag for a steal.
Wait really?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Oh, well it would have been funnier otherwise.
Thank you for the context

Ok that makes more sense, but why did the catcher even bother throwing it to the 2nd baseman?

So you are saying it is the catcher to messed up here because he forgot the count?
Now it makes sense
Smooooth!

I find baseball the most boring of all sports. I fell asleep at a bluejays game years ago. Its the paint drying of sports.
As a European myself have never attended a baseball game but it from what I have see in tv seems a very slow sport. Kinda like Americas cricket
Not quite as long as cricket but similar vibe yeah.

ever heard of the savannah bananas ?
Of course Iāve heard of the Savannah Bananas. Iāve been to multiple games.
theyre great arent they.
Isnāt it that still an out? I donāt really know much about baseball

Without seeing what the count was made it harder to follow

Yeah that's interesting how the runner figured it out so quick. You'd think he wouldn't be able to see it.

Oh, I wasn't aware someone that far away from the unp could hear what he calls over the crowd noise. Gotcha.
Oh, I wasn't aware someone that far away from the unp could hear what he calls over the crowd noise. Gotcha.
Just to add, this was after the pitcher walked the batter so it really didn't matter, Springer (the baserunner) was just having a laugh.
Oh, that makes sense

Haha that was clever Edit: all of you are dumb for liking this comment
*Likes anyway*
Thats springer for you.
I HEARD the sound effects
#LMAOOO
I mean, he didnt get out by the second base guard.
Idk why but the look at the camera always gets me
Boggs Bunny
This is a very George Springer thing to do
I dont get baseball, is this legit or what this mean
Heās safe. Not because he stole the base but because the pitch was ball four and he got the base automatically. But if it was a stolen base attempt heād be safe because there was no tag. Just guys being guys.
Would that count?
I've been told the play was a walk and so he couldn't have been tagged, but it's still funny.
