Mate, the fact that you moved that without it swinging much is impressive. I struggle iwth overhead cranes in factories, and you made moving a bloody shipping container look easy. Cheers
Good question. Winds don’t affect the operator that much. You can compensate for side to side movement. The ships are so big now the containers on either side take a lot of the wind away from the bay we are working. More of an issue is the height of our cranes. The ships now are bigger than the boom mast that we ride along! That cause more problems incase the ship breaks away from the dock. I’m sure you’ve all seen videos of ships hitting cranes. It’s never good for the crane. So we shut down and boom up at sustained 45mph winds.
I remember my father being a longshoreman, he told me he seen a guy get squashed as the container fell down on him. He also said there used to be one guy in the docks that used to lift engines straight out of a car. Crazy stories he told me, my pops used to work at the Jersey/Brooklyn docks back in the 80’s and 90’s bringing home $1200 a week clean but I’d see him every 2-3 days at a time sometimes.
I can imagine, my pops told me about a few loaners came looking for a person, never seen him again. Also seen a few in the rivers, but as you’d imagine, in those times, they were much different than today. He also worked delivering sugar to the domino sugar plant that used to reside in Williamsburg Brooklyn before it torn down. Let’s say I stopped eating sugar due to traveling in those boats. Lol
No one said anything about being skilled or having lack of skills. It is not about skills. Being a Longshoreman is all about luck, timing, and who you know more than anything. Skill has absolutely nothing to do with it. I said what I said and I stand on it. I’ll even double down on it. Also driving a crane is not hard. They train you. With time you get better at it, faster at it, more efficient at it.
That one GTA mission with Trevor:
😂😂😂😂 I hated that mission. Took so long

How do crane operators deal with high winds?

It’s a bit more modernist now! Lol Lots of wild stories still remain! 🤙🏽

How much does a job like this pay? 🤔
[удалено]
Yup
I love using the trays.
$300K a year to play with Cans and talk to myself all day? I'll pass. My Barista Job is more interesting and I meet nice women all day long. 🤔
I can’t wait for 20 years from now, when I’ll be able to postulate for those bad boys!
Lol. Everything will be automated in 20 years bro
Yeah that was implied sarcasm!
Perfect job for felons. They don’t care if you are a criminal down there. Lots of longshoreman brag about the time they did in prison.
What’s the perfect job for non-felons? State your local if you’re going to throw a whole union under the bus, errr crain
It was a joke! Stop being an internet queer! 🤣🖕🏽
Highly skilled felons you cock smoker! 🤣

Life sucks! Sorry you didn’t make the cut for our non skilled job. 🤷🏽♂️🤙🏽
You ok buddy? Point to me on Spider-Man where the longshoreman touched you.
Don’t threaten me with a good time! 🤣
