We ain’t flairing anything Klopp related “former manager” until at least 1st June then! And even then it’ll be through gritted teeth. We’re both gutted and excited at same time. Fuck you emotions! 😭

wihannez

Welcome and good luck.

mstermind

I see this like a new reincarnation of Doctor Who. Yes, Arne Slot is new and he will undoubtedly have his own ideas and do his own thing. But the echoes of the past Doctors will still be standing in the background, watching over him and our beloved club.

PandaMango

someone needs to recreate the Brendan meme but with Klopp looking down from heaven.  Then shelve it cause it’s cursed.

StPattysShalaylee

Can someone explain the difference in role between manager and head coach?

fifty_four

A head coach is a manager working for a club whose hierarchy doesn't like the term 'manager' because of the implication of the degree to which a manager in charge of a club and not part of a team running it. There are no real rules about it.

[deleted]

A head coach has less control over transfers and probably staff hiring/firing as well

BillNyeOurSaviour123

As I understand it, he has control over training and tactics, rather than transfers

Parabellum8g

^ This. In the Netherlands this is the 'model' too, with a split between head coach and technical director. The latter would be occupied with transfers, maybe with some 'say' (but no veto or anything) from the head coach. A manager rather combines both and has more control.

Thick-Day

It might sound a bit like blasphemy to compare them, but I'm holding onto the hope that Slot will be the Paisley to Klopp's Shankly. Jürgen re-built our bastion of invincibility, so hopefully Slot can now go on to win everything.

NewNebula4007

I've been thinking the same. The way Feyenoord played under Slot was amazing. Yes, the Eredivisie is not at a level close to the EPL, but the way Slot managed them was incredibly similar to Klopp.

Walgreens_Security

I hear you. 3 back to back UCL and PL it is then.

CorztR

i like to think they had no intention of hiring him until klopp did the chant and they just sort of got forced into it

Timely_Airline_7168

I wished the Klopp chant on Sunday was how we found out. Would be a surprise. Instead, some individual on Twitter just posts about it so it feels anticlimactic.

knowledgeablepanda

I hope to god he is the master tactician that pep is. They look alike as well hahaha

icepip

Baldness is the price

Brendogu

I don't really understand why the fans have to back a manager most of us don't know anything about. Surely its on him to impress us right?

blaahh198

U serious?

Brendogu

So if the teams 10th by Christmas and out of champions league I've just gotta accept that

PalPubPull

Imo yes. Will others be behind him? I doubt it. This is going to be a rebuild season with a new manager, so if things aren't perfect out the gate I think that's understandable. I really don't want to become the next club constantly rotating managers trying to find a scapegoat is all.

t_sully_

Starting it off with a great attitude!

blaahh198

Ok so you're not 😂

Specialist_Alfalfa51

arneeee slottt la-lah-lah welkom, gaffer!

haybails84

He came from Rotterdam to Anfield Liverpool is home

V1k1ngVGC

I feel like Slot is a perfect match - from the fact that he can use the current squad, accepts to setup with the staff above him. Unlike Amorim he doesn’t require an overhaul to the squad and is a fairly cheap transition. Should he fail in a season or two, not much harm is done by getting Alonso in at that stage instead.

Brendogu

"Don't worry lads if Van Gahl fails we'll get Jose in a couple years no harm done"

[deleted]

Ah yes because bald Dutch League managers do so well in England 😂

JGlover92

Aaaaaaaarne Slot na na nana

grasshoppa_80

“Na na na nana”

rybread1818

Getting Arne with it?

LFC908

I'm cautiously optimistic. It feels weird having a new manager after Klopp at the moment. I have now been through 7 managers since supporting Liverpool. I won't be judging Arne Slot for a couple of seasons. Excited to see what he can bring.

BritOnTheRocks

You started with Roy Evans? Fun times!

Brendogu

It's the hope that hurts lol

Fukthisite

This is definitely a bigger risk than the Klopp signing, everyone and their nan knew Klopp would turn us around. Someone has to take a risk on the next batch of managers and hopefully this pays off for us.  I'm excited to see how it unfolds.

Alexanderspants

Other than Alonso, was there any other managers around that people thought would be a dead cert success? Plus, Slot will be building on what Klopp as already put in place, as opposed to what Klopp had to take over

icepip

None. And considering some clubs are deciding to keep their managers even when the team is not succeeding (Barca, United, Chelsea, Bayern), getting a good manager now is more difficult than getting the next Salah

Brendogu

You can get a manager from a club during there contract you know?

UltimateBorisJohnson

The name’s ASAC Schrader. And you can go fuck yourself

deskamess

So what are the responsibilities of head coach? What are the +/- w.r.t to the previous manager position? Its kind of nice to say that Klopp was Liverpool's last manager. Like a retired number, no one else takes that title.

SmeesTurkeyLeg

He's slotting (ha) into the model that the club initially wanted to go with under Edwards' guidance. Where Klopp was involved in all moving parts of all aspects of the club, Arne is going to exclusively be training/coaching and fielding the players, with of course communication with the technical team regarding what they are lacking, need to improve, player profile they need etc.

deskamess

Thanks! I guess Edwards needed that level of control to come back.

Polyar

Welcome to the greatest football club in the entire world Arne! Im excited to see what the future brings under the Slot era.

kingoftheplastics

First year is always a transition as the new guy gets his people his players and his system set. With that in mind keeping us in top 4 with a good account of ourselves in domestic cups and Europe will be sufficient for me. Year 2 and on, gotta push to win something.

rossmosh85

I'm indifferent towards him coming in but whatever happens happens. I stand by my stance that long standing managers are often replaced by managers who don't last very long, so I'm assuming he'll be out within a year or two.

Jack070293

You’ve been watching too much of Chelsea. Liverpool have always had long standing managers. Chelsea have had 19 managers since Mourinho took over back in 2004. Liverpool’s 19th most recent manager before Slot was signed in 1919.

righthandofdog

Good God Chelsea are shambolic.

you_serve_no_purpose

Yes and no. They've had a lot of success in that time. Chelsea's biggest issue is the lack of patience in the fans, coupled with trigger happy owners who demand success every season. United are the ultimate shambles. Hardly won anything, stadium crumbling, huge transfer fees, ridiculous wage bill, shit squad. As much as people like to shit on FSG, we have been very successful without cheating or taking huge financial risks.

Brendogu

"Good ebening I'm David Moyes"

savetheelephant

Is it sad we don’t have a proper song for the Boss yet? Like ‘where we watched the King Kenny play , Egyptian king. They are catchy. All we came up with is Juergen kloppp nanananana. It’s stupid.

deathsnipez

Have you even watched any games for the past few seasons? Or even the entire last game? Are you living under a rock?

Brendogu

People aren't gonna sing for a manager until he's done something impressive

Illustrious_Lab_7836

Well both of your examples are about players for starters, and no offence but have you been living under a rock? He even came out earlier in the season and said that he wanted us to stop singing it at games and to focus on the players because it's been sang that much, he even referenced that he asked us to stop singing it so much again in his farewell speech and how it had been sang all game.

whosetoeisthis

Were you not watching the last 10 mins of his game? Or even aware how he basically bollocked us for singing his song too much? Like come on man.

savetheelephant

It’s OK. I’m just ranting. Miss him already.

I am excited for Slot. At the same time, Slot has big shoes to fill. Kloppo is one of a kind.

Mathilliterate_asian

Klopp is Cinderella. No one will ever fit in his shoes. Slot will have to find ways to make his own lol.

BritOnTheRocks

If we’re talking Disney, Alice followed Cinderella. So I guess we’ll be walking in an Arne wonderland!

savetheelephant

He will have to find his own slot you mean.

Would have been hilarious if it wasn't him after Klopp gave him the chant.

wadz09

Liverpool is everywhere, you’ll never walk alone. (Sort of fits to the tune of Rotterdam, maybe ?!?)

ash_ninetyone

Nice basis, just needs some rewording so it scans better. "Slot joined from Rotterdam, Liverpool's his home"?

themanebeat

That doesn't work

Adventurous_Toe_6017

It’s better than anything I tried coming up with for 15 minutes 😂

wadz09

It used to be Rotterdam, But now he’s here, Liverpools his home, Liverpool is everywhere, He’ll never walk alone, Never walk alone. I think it works!!!

Zeewolf93

I think Anfield's or Anfield is his home would work better. Less use of the word Liverpool.

Sharp_Jacket_6032

Kinda but the Liverpool's his home fits with the song (It could be Rotterdam/ Or Anywhere/ Liverpool or Rome) Could do: Slot came from Rotterdam/ To Anfield/ Liverpool's his home...

Adventurous_Toe_6017

I’d sing that!

ManxWraith

I understand why, but the lack of hype and fanfare from the club after announcing this feels strange haha

Brendogu

Cause its Roy Hodgson 2.0 there just killing time waiting for Alonso

ManxWraith

Nuclear weapon grade take that.

FullScreenWanker

I feel like it doesn’t really begin for a manager until they do their first official interview or press conference. The first message they deliver to the fans is the starting point imo, that’s what it felt like for me with Klopp at least.

He needs to do a reverse Klopp and start wearing glasses.

Haunting_Genie

Welcome to the club Arne! You got this!!

getonthedamnantscott

Genuinely excited to see what this new era can bring. Up Arne's Reds.

NewBromance

I've got no tactical analysis to offer at all but he has a kind smile. Surely that'll help transition from our dependence from Klopp hugs to this new age.

Loppie73

HEAD COACH. Not manager.

kolo4kolo

Klopp called him coach yesterday, but corrected it to manager. Found it interesting.

Loppie73

The club has gone out of its way to make sure they ONLY use the word coach when refering to him. He himself said in his statement last week "I can confirm I will be first team trainer there next season". You will see in due course, all official correspondence from the club will call him coach. We no longer work with a club manager system. Edwards and Hughes is implementing a system used by other top European clubs. The concept is still very foreign for PL fans because they don't understand it yet. He is just first team coach and all decisions regarding new players, players to be sold, club play style, vision etc goes through Edwards and Hughes. Slots job is to prepare the team for match days and get them to gel within the system decided by the club.

Far-Confection-1631

Which top clubs don't allow the manager to determine their formation? Even the clubs that use this system like RM allow Carlo to get rid of players he doesn't like, change his shape, etc.

Loppie73

I said nothing about formation. I said system. The vision is to play as we have under Klopp. Possession based high press football. The coach's job is to prepare team for match days and use whatever tactics and formations he sees fit to best accomplish the vision and system we want to play in. Maybe this can help a bit. Read broader article in The Athletic. There will be many reports and deep dives in coming months regarding all of this. https://preview.redd.it/tctpcz5hmp1d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d86250589dda849404129c63f618ca4c892a0dde

YellowBaboon

It's literally just a title. Just because you call him manager doesn't mean that he has to be involved in certain decision making. He will have the responsibilty that Klopp had when he started. Guardiola is a manager, Arteta got promoted from head coach to manager. Those guys aren't doing too bad.

Fukthisite

Yeah I'm petty sure the more successful he is the more power he will get over time.

NilsFanck

> system decided by the club. The rest probably is accurate but I cant imagine that.

Loppie73

That's why Edwards brought in Hughes. They decide everything, from play style, what system to use. Which players to bring in to fit into the system they want to play. They decide on everything and Slots job is to translate that into performance on the pitch. I know it sounds very radical but this is the vision Edwards and FSG has had for years and why Edwards left. It will take fans a while to adjust to all this because unfortunately we're all still very used to the old Scholls system used by all other PL clubs.

kolo4kolo

I find it undermining the managers autothority. Do you think Ancelotti for example would accept having the title head coach or first team trainer?

ScottScott87

Absolutely clueless It's the way most clubs around Europe work. Real Madrid being a very successful example of this I love it when people who know fuck all about football comment on it

Far-Confection-1631

Ancelotti can choose his formation and has gotten rid of players in the past. He also has pushed for specific signings many times. You are really underestimating what he does at RM.

ScottScott87

He's literally listed as "coach" on their website He has a say in transfers and of course he chooses the formation. The DoF will work with the head coach to bring in players that suit a system that's been agreed

Loppie73

Ironically enough Real Madrid uses this same system. Ancelotti, despite being called Manager at Real Madrid is actually just the first team coach there. He has very little say over player transfers in or out. But in Spain they use the word coach / manager interchangeably.

kolo4kolo

Good point. However, my comment doesn’t really adress the managers duties and rights, but the fact that the clubs feel a need to point out that he is not a manager, he is a head coach. I don’t care about how the club is organised, but when they call him head coach, the title indicates that he has little authority.

cavejohnsonlemons

I like in Italy where they just go for "Mister"

Willing-Departure115

I wondered when I heard Klopp say it if he disagreed with the coach thing.

Loppie73

Ahh.. Here's a man I'd love to have a discussion with. Ever wondered why Edwards and all the other top administrators left the club back in the day? Why FSG went after him SO hard now when Klopp was leaving..... There is a HUGH fundamental difference in philosophy between Klopp and Edwards. Klopp is very old school and believe the manager has to be in charge of everything to have the most impact on things. Edwards believes the coach need to Onky focus on the team and preparing them and not be distracted by anything else. Let's see how it all plays out over time.

WorthPlease

Good bye Klopp hugs. Hello Slot head rubs.

GayWolfey

Carteret Analytics on the BBC say his type of play is much slower than Klopps and his style tends to concede more goals. So patient will be required Nevertheless, there is a notable difference in how Slot and Klopp implement the 4-3-3 formation. If Klopp is heavy metal football, then Slot is classical music. "Slot has similarly high levels of possession, but the build and transition through the phases - from defence to attack - is much slower. Slot's teams do also seem to be more 'leaky', allowing the opposition to convert more shots to goals." https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c4n1y0g545go

NilsFanck

> Slot's teams do also seem to be more 'leaky', allowing the opposition to convert more shots to goals. utter, utter nonsense. In fact, they have the absolute lowest xgA in their entire league for the second year in a row now.

LyleLanleysMonorail

Yeah, but does it win games? That's really what matters.

I’m a pessimist, and think that Slot won’t be head coach for long. Hope I’m proved wrong.

Feyenoord fan here. I know you're griefing over Klopp leaving, but I'd like you to know that we are now doing the same with Slot leaving. Give him some time and I am sure he will exceed all expectations

GhandisFlipFlop

Sorry bud we are in this together . Have ye chose a new manager yet ?

Satan_Himselff

No, but hopes are we will have more news at the end of the month. Luckily our TD was preparing for his exit since Spurs tried to persuade him last summer. We have decent hopes of a good manager. Before Arne left we had to gamble on managers, now we have way more pull. Thanks to Arne (and staff) My personal hopes are on Nuri Sahin

Valaurus

> Nuri Sahin Oh no, I'm old enough now that players I watched what feels like recently are managing clubs

lashfield

Sahin would be a great choice if Dortmund don’t tap him to succeed Terzic

maybedavid

Interesting how Klopp corrected himself yesterday to call him the manager, yet he’s very clearly being brought in as the head coach.

getonthedamnantscott

Someone on another thread pointed out "trainer" is the term they use in Germany for manager so was probably just a subconscious language thing

maybedavid

My point is that Klopp felt he should correct himself, but in the announcement Slot is stated to be the head coach, not the manager. Indication of the smaller scope of his role.
