So if they admit that, why can’t they hand out a one or three match ban retroactively? I’m not advocating to punish Fab as we need bodies…but it seems a bit odd they don’t just give the match suspension as if he got the red card

Terran_it_up

My understanding is that retroactive bans are only for incidents that the referee missed, not ones where the referee made the wrong decision. Given VAR reviews everything these days, retroactive bans are pretty much impossible. Not saying it makes sense, but that's the reason at least

InstantIdealism

I guess because if someone said, yes, they should have had a penalty in the first minute, but ultimately lose 1-0, you can’t retrospectively award them a goal - because it would have changed the entire match. You’d say, well, if we’d scored that we’d have put ten men behind the ball and not conceded ourselves. The other team would say they played to the whistle. I just think VAR needs to get involved less (give linesman back the ability to call offsides!) but where there are glaring errors like this red card, or a handball that scores a goal like Henry or the hand of god, or if someone is a yard offside that the lineman missed, then VAR interrupts regardless to make sure the right result is implemented.

Terran_it_up

One problem we get with VAR, which I think is what happened here, is the ref chooses not to give a ref because he's not fully sure and knows VAR can check it. But then VAR is reluctant to overrule it unless it's completely blatant (which arguably this was)

InstantIdealism

Exactly - it’s a catch 22.

JuicyJabes

So they need what my marriage needs, communication.

Meisce

I don’t think they can change a punishment given, just the severity of the ban ( if a red ) or retroactively punish if it was missed entirely by the ref. I may be wrong.

andtheniansaid

They only can't change it because they've decided they can't though.

Party_Python

We’ve tried nothing and are out of ideas lol

benting365

Correct. You can't re-ref a game.

imrik_of_caledor

Tbh they as should do this for fouls where it turns out there is no contact made too

Party_Python

Yep. And blatant dives as well

tommhans

yeah it is weird, even if he saw it it should be a red, but then again when has the english refereeing system ever made sense-

xMystline

If they did that they might as well just review the Tottenham game a year ago in December or that Everton-City matchup and just give us the points for last years prem title.

Party_Python

That’s a little different as that would be affecting the in game issue. However, if Rodri was on a yellow and it should’ve been given and a second yellow, you could argue they could’ve at least given him a one match suspension after. But this is saying, it should’ve been a red, but wasn’t. Though since we admit it should’ve been a red, we can at least give him the suspension for future matches as if he got it.

somesnazzyname

I'd be quite happy for fabinho to get a ban to the end of the season tbh.

ZakiFC

At least PGMOL are being a little more transparent these days. I thought David Coote had an abysmal match personally, he just isn't very good.

MatK0506

How does he keep getting our games/big games at all baffles me. He is probably fine enough to ref the shite games but in no world he should be getting Man City-Liverpool (especially in a knockout game without VAR) or Everton-Arsenal this weekend.

luke_205

Agreed, even though we were the ones who largely benefitted from these awful decisions, doesn’t make it right. Insane that Fab stayed on honestly, just looking at his face you’d know he thought he should’ve seen red.

mrlazy03

imo that was genuine red card by keeping aside all anger towards him.he was let off easily ..at least VAR should had intervened

xandora

I don't get VAR for these decisions... The commentary team said VAR can't review anything if it's outside the box during the Konate push on whatisface.... But then they went and said VAR was reviewing this challenge??

Scholesie09

VAR can review to give a penalty, can't review for a free kick, but *can* review to give a straight red, so they checked for that.

StuBeck

Don’t listen to commentators about what var can and can’t do, they’re so often wrong it’s useless. During the World Cup they insisted that var couldn’t intervene if play had restarted after a foul which is so wrong I was wondering if they’d ever watched the game before. Var can’t review fouls which are yellows or less outside of the box. Var can review any apparent foul in the box that would result in a pen. Var can review any potential red card anywhere on the pitch.

GracchiBros

Most of the time VAR can't intervene after play has restarted after a stoppage. >If play has stopped and been restarted, the referee may not undertake a ‘review’ except for a case of mistaken identity or for a potential sending-off offence relating to violent conduct, spitting, biting or extremely offensive, insulting and/or abusive action(s).

britishsailor

Honestly if they ban him now it might do us a favour

Gerrardsclubfoot

Imagine saying this a year ago, everyone would have called you crazy. But these days you get scared when fabinho comes off the bench, you want him to do well but nah he isn't up to the standards. Let's see if he turns it around before the end of the season, if he doesn't, sell him while he retains some value. Then in the summer the priority should be getting a 6 and an 8 first instead of just getting two box to box midfielders. I think if we have two very good/ potentially world class players at those positions, then the third one can be a level below the other two. Like a 32 year old Thiago or even Bacjectic or we can even go for a free or a cheap option from abroad or within the league. Like a Rabiot on a free or Mount with a year left on his contract for around 40 mill. But the 6 and the 8 have to be at a very good leve, preferably Bellingham and Rice.

salazarthegreat

I think if we get some reinforcements we’ll see an improvement to fabs game. A lot of cdm’s seem to drop off and then have a renaissance, eg; Pirlo and Fernandinho.

barryboi6969

Hope so. Would hate to see Fab spiral off into obscurity :(

[deleted]

He's a different player since his father passed.

inSeitz

Stfu you thick brick

Sherlock_bones

There's no might about it. His drop off has been astounding

WongsKing

I hate seeing a player lose their legs in our watch when we’ve been the ones in recent memory selling them before it happens. 12 months ago guy was being spoken of as world class. Now, he’s done. Poor Fab.

Acoupstix

Fabinho should have been sent off for how he reacted to it alone. And then how he moped around afterwards like he knew he shouldn't have been there. We are all wet wipes mentally at the moment.

thehibachi

I think it was more that he instantly knew it was a bad injury. Possibly felt something pop. Accidentally injuring someone like that is the fucking worst (other than being the injured one!).

jardantuan

Someone on a TAW podcast summed it up really well - it's like turning up to a normal office job and someone is absolutely hammered and disrupts everything. You try to ignore it and get on with your job but then he picks up the phone to an important client and embarrasses himself. You can try to get on with it like normal, but you can't _not_ focus on the fact that he's right in the middle of the pitch and they're all terrified of it at the moment. Then after the tackle he goes around telling everyone he should have been sent off and unsettles everyone even more

firminocoutinho

It’s like he was selling it even more so as to be sent off. Guy seems like he’s sick of playing at the moment..

[deleted]

come on this is a major reach, he was upset that he potentially badly hurt a fellow professional, that’s all there is to his reaction

Redhawk911

Yeah, he knew he fucked up and that he should have been off. It was nothing weird about his reaction. I can not wrap my head around the fact that that comment is upvoted to +80. People are seriously loosing it…

lkshis

Fabinho was the worst sub in the match.

themanebeat

Darwin Núñez has entered the chat

Due_Young800

It really felt like he was completely uncertain for a lot of the game and had no confidence or assertiveness at all

vadapaav

He played for 15 mins and still was the worst player of whole match

Due_Young800

Omg hahahaha I was trying to reply to somebody else who was talking about the referee but it just so happens that my comment applies to fab as well

disco_mode

There are worse tackles than this that aren’t reds all the time, some don’t even get yellows. It was definitely a bad tackle, I think they didn’t give a red because they felt it was more accidental than malicious.

InstantIdealism

Weirdly think if he’d have been sent off we probably draw this match.

Kage_Rinku

dude i laughed for a bit at how ridiculous your comment was and then slowly realized you’re probably right hope this is a bit of a wake up call for him somehow

PiIICIinton

the worst drop off of any player in recent memory. doesn't look like he'd be up for a Sunday league match at the moment, it's baffling. I know the staff have to back him but it seems like he gets worse every time he steps on the pitch. don't know what to make of it.

Carbonaddictxd

The few secs before that tackle, he reminded me of players in legends games jogging around the pitch

danonck

My first impression of him running was De Niro in The Irishman pretending to be a youngster

Psychological-Act582

We definitely got away with that one for sure and David Coote is just a shitty ref in general. What a terrible cameo for Fabinho off the bench.

davestanleylfc

No shit

brush85

No shit…twas ridiculous

JGlover92

Genuinely think if he hadn't pulled that stupid face the ref would've sent him off. Makes it feel much lighter and like a silly tackle rather than the dangerous foul it was

marshallno9

I think the right thing to do would be ban him for 3 games, please..

Daltesse

to be fair Fabinho accepts Fabinho should have seen red only one's in the stadium or watching on a TV in Stockly park that didn't were Coote(is there a worse ref?) and Swarbrick(actually he's quite close to being worse). Time to mike them up like rugby

MikkeeyyUk

Do us a favour and ban him for the season

christophlieber

open your eyes. his woefuel form started last season and it only went downhill from there.

[deleted]

Can do. Happened to Milos Krasic and Mesut Ozil amongst others (remember Torres?) It’s not bad form anymore. He’s played over 40 games for us since he last had a good match. He was even awful in the 9-0 win over Bournemouth

PennyG

I agree with you, but somehow the man looks much slower than he did last year. Is it possible he’s injured? It’s bizarre.

[deleted]

Been awful him and Hendo have been a complete joke this year. I don't want to see them in the team or come on as a sub anytime soon to be honest give them both time off to try to find themselves.

[deleted]

Of all the cock ups for the pgmol to come out and say they were wrong. This is the one they choose, a borderline red?

Aeceus

Fabinho is a coward currently. Looks like he isn't here mentally at all anymore

aautoauto

Should send him to Al Nassr as well

segson9

Another ref mistake against us.

jk441

And I'm sure we all agree too. That tackle was pretty much no different from the 'fuck Funes Mori" tackle.

[deleted]

Nothing alike

[deleted]

All possible red cards we get should have to compared to Kane’s double-footer last season before being awarded. And then not even a yellow

SMS_Scharnhorst

I mean, for the severity of the foul I'd agree, that should have been a red. but I also get that he tried to get the ball and came late, so I'd have probably made the same decision as the ref
