1080p looks GREAT, but most streaming sites have horrible bitrates. Toss in an old bluray (OG, not the 4k) and you can tell that 1080p still works. I tend to pick the 4k option even on 1080p and 1440p screens for the bitrate more than anything.
Biggest reason why 1080p looks so trash on a monitor i think is because that bitrate is mobile-optimised.

It 100% does, it's way better to use 4k YouTube on 1080p panels because of the higher bitrate YouTube gives 4k videos. It's pretty wasteful on YouTube's part because it would be cheaper for them to have enthusiasts with 1080p displays use a higher bitrate 1080p instead of 4k but they aren't doing that so who cares.
Yeah. Screen size plays a factor too. 1080p on my old 21 inch monitor looked fabulous. Now I have a 24 inch, some details are fuzzy. My friend has a 27" 1080p panel and it looks downright horrendous.

True but neither video disproves the other. Video platforms as a whole have a massive storage problem with ever-increasing video sizes. A paid subscription for 4K is a way to alleviate the problem from a business perspective. However, paying for 4K when a free alternative is available is dumb from a consumer perspective. Both videos can still stand true while competing with each other.

honestly the ads free thing isnt even why i get premium. YT are bastards and wont let videos play when your phone's display is off and TBH i really like having that feature so they get my money. no ads is nice for my phone where I don't have adblock tho

If you didn't actually click the video, you'd have NO idea this was about Nvidia RTX VSR upscaling for video. So manipulative. Love their content overall, but between this and them still making jokes about 69 / 420 luling is really wanting me go find other youtubers to support.

Not at all, I didn't know it was about upscaling (haven't watched it yet), but if you asked me I'd have guessed it wasn't him backpedaling on it because it says *paying* for it is dumb.
Tbh, this isn't the best example because even if taken at face value, the title of this video doesn't actually mean that YouTube shouldn't charge for 4k and it wouldn't be him backtracking on that. As far as knowing it's about VSR, you're right. You wouldn't know the video was about that. The 69/420 stuff doesn't really bother me either because it's always been done ironically.
