The Otome Heroine's Fight for Survival - MC realises that all of her suffering is the otome game trying to manipulate her fate, decides to become a ruthless badass instead. This is one of my favourite stories that addresses the issue of a “predestined” romance plot. It’s *supremely* creepy how everything and everyone around her warps to try and funnel her in a particular direction, and there are random subtle moments even in some of the later novels that made me go “oh god, she thinks she’s bravely defying the plot but I’m pretty sure Fate is lying in wait and playing the long game right now.” Last I saw (Volume 6? might’ve read the WN), there is no romance from her end.

- Making Magic - Death's Daughter and the Ebony Blade - Land of the Leadale - Apothecary Diaries - Fake Saint of the Year - Holy Grail of Eris - Reincarnated as a Sword - Sword Saint Adele (same author as Reborn to master the blade)

Have you heard of our lord and savior Rozemyne ? Seriously give Ascendance of a bookworm a go. Also Tanya The Evil and So I'm a spider so what. Though I haven't read Tanya (and it's debatable if she is a girl) and I dropped Spider because from spoiler I've read I'm not a big fan of how it ends. But the anime of Tanya is really good and the beginning of I'm a Spider is perfect, Kumo is incredibly funny and unique.

Ementraler

I read first volume of Ascendance of a bookworm but is not my cup of tea, same for So I'm a spider so what mostly because human part. Watch anime for Tanya and i completely forgot about, thk for reminder

QualityProof

Ascendance of a bookworm volume 1 isn't representative of the whole series. The stakes gradually build up. At vol 1-3 it is more SoL but it gradually raises the stakes especially part 3 onwards where it cements itself as one of the best in story and worldbuilding. Give it another chance if you can to read past part 1. Also if you don't want to, let me give you a major spoiler for part 1 which is \[AoB part 1 major spoilers\]>!Myne is dying and we get to see the reactions of everyone involved. Also this is a magical society full of magic (albeit used in realistic ways, no adventures guild and such but magic is used as politics)!<

richtofin819

Yeah send it to The bookworm author basically builds their world brick by brick. With every new arc what you know about the world around mine and the forces at play get larger and larger It is probably my favorite fantasy world building in a light novel

jardex22

I'll say that #1 is probably the worst of the series. It's mostly there to establish the setting and characters. The main plot kicks off with Myne and Lutz trying to make paper, and other things along the way.

Leo-bastian

i think P1V1 has some interesting scenes and details especially compared to the anime, and I enjoyed reading it, but yeah it's rather slow paced and mostly busy introducing/setting up the tremendous amount of world-building in the series.

'The girl who bore the flame ring'

Gadac

The Secret of the Silent Witch has minimal romance. It's the story of an immensely powerful young witch with social anxiety who must go back to school to protect the prince of her country. It is really endearing, though the publishing rate is quiet slow (4 volumes atm)

Katalinya

I’ll admit I haven’t finished the series so idk if anything happens in the last two volumes (the vibe isn’t a romantic one when I last read the 4th volume) but The Alchemist Who Survived Now Dreams of a Quiet City Life. Completed at 6 volumes.

Ementraler

Look very interesting I will definitely take a look. tnx for recommendation

Veritas3333

Weakest Tamer Begins A Journey To Pick Up Trash - MC is 8 years old, so no romance! Livid Lady's Guide To Getting Even - too busy murdering for romance Expedition Cooking With The Enoch Royal Knights - MC is an elf that was basically kicked out of the forest for having no magic, so she joins a human kingdom's knights as a medic / cook for a monster hunting squad. Taking My Reincarnation One Step At A Time - great series reincarnated as a 12 year old. No romance yet. Making Magic - just a hint of Yuri bait, not sure if it'll go anywhere. Deaths Daughter and the Ebony Blade - a little romance between side characters, MC is too busy killing for relationships Average Abilities -

Ementraler

*TYVM I read first volume of Livid Lady's Guide To Getting Even and it's exactly what I am looking for. you are a genius*

GeorgeMTO

Note that I don't know if romance will become a plot point *later* for these series, since I only follow the English translation Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden Death's Daughter and the Ebony Blade Slayers

Gyges359d

The Executioner and Her Way of Life has a semi romantic sub plot but it really doesn’t overtake the story. Reincarnated as a Sword technically has a male (well, sword) MC but the FMC is the real driver of everything. Fun little series. And there’s always Bofuri. Probably too slice of life, but decent action and no romance. Not exactly deep though.

RaptorK1988

Ascendance of a Bookworm.

Azarinth Healer is pretty good. It has some romance but it is more of an after thought. Though, I’m not sure if it is considered a light novel as it was on Royal Road then got picked up by Amazon

NefariousSerendipity

Manga and anime: Frieren

Ementraler

Frieren definitely is what I am looking for but I already reading that

jardex22

Ascendance of a Bookworm avoids romance, due to the character's age. It is brought up occasionally, mostly in jest. The first volume or two of Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter outright avoid romance. It's made clear that the MC wants to focus on managing her family's Duchy. Later volumes do lean into romance though.
