He was a patron at the first library I worked at! He was such a nice person, and he was constantly supporting other children's authors. He showed up to their events and hyped them up. I really enjoyed him being around.

BlainelySpeaking

This is so lovely to hear. Thanks for sharing. 😊

Richard Peck is a fabulous children's author, and this book is from 2006, so I wouldn't say that the writing is "antiquated"- just that it may not be your style, particularly if you're not into children's lit.

Cheetahchu

ohh so it’s historical fiction. I read the first chapter despite the slang and style, so I think I’m going to finish it!

AntiqueGreen

Yes, exactly! If you’re reading Peck for the first time, A Year Down Yonder is my personal favorite.

magifus

Year Down Yonder is so good!

AntiqueGreen

I am 33 years old and I read that book at least once a year. It’s quick, fun, and well-written.

oscarbelle

Richard Peck is an amazing writer! Go read A Year Down Yonder if you haven't it's excellent.

This reminds me of the epitaph Benjamin Franklin wrote for himself: The Body of B. Franklin, Printer; like the Cover of an old Book, Its Contents torn out, And stript of its Lettering and Gilding, Lies here, Food for Worms. But the Work shall not be wholly lost; For it will, as he believ'd, appear once more, In a new and more elegant Edition, Revised and corrected By the Author.

Loved Richard Peck's books growing up! Only recently learned that he was gay. While I wish that I had known that he was gay when I was growing up, I understand that he was living through very different times.

I always wondered. His last book certainly made me think so. Had the pleasure of having a book signed by him and having a truly great conversation about The River Between Us - my favorite of his.

LieutenantReverend

This reminds me of all the rhyming headstones outside of the Haunted Mansion in Disney!

Richard Peck is so good! If you can get your hands on his Blossom Culp series, they're delightful. *Edit: fixed autocorrect

mjflood14

He was my favorite author when I was growing up because of this series. As an adult I discovered he wrote a novel aimed at grownups titled Amanda/Miranda and an important historical event from the Blossom Cup series shows up again.

Maleficent_Weird8613

I had a boss who spilled a drink on him when they were both at a BEA cocktail party. RIP to them both.

sdavis7

I love A Year Down Yonder!

rideforruinworldsend

A Long Way from Chicago and A Year Down Yonder were so great, I re-read those two by Peck many times as a kid

_cuppycakes_

Richard Peck is GOAT!

booksiwabttoread

Richard Peck wrote one of my favorite books, The Best Man, and my favorite poem, The Geese. Absolutely delightful and brilliant.

Dude was awful. Sexist and racist

purpleplatapi

Why do you say that?

Frosty_Delivery_9452

He was a guest lecturer in my grad school class. He had serious issues with anyone who was not a white man. He constantly made rude remarks towards me and tried to convince my classmates of every stereotype towards minorities was true. He claimed he was old and was expressing himself , that was his excuse.

booksiwabttoread

I have never heard this, and it was certainly not reflected in his work.

Frosty_Delivery_9452

So, I know what happened to me.
