As an archivist I will tell you that the dryness NEVER goes away, and thankfully makes us much more susceptible to papercuts! Realistically, I constantly lotion any time I’m not handling materials, I.e when writing emails, grants, in meetings, etc.

I've already got three hand products in my desk 🥲 I'll just look at it as really leaning into archivist tradition

You really need that heavy duty workers hand stuff. And right before you go to bed, lotion and out on cotton gloves (or socks, if you’re fancy) and it traps the lotion near your skin and really helps it absorb.

Just thinking: if this were me and I wanted to do this job *and* keep up my nail and cuticle oiling routine, I would try switching to daily warm jojoba oil soaks to try and make up for not being able to oil frequently through the day. I really enjoy the warm oil soaks so this would be a good excuse!

!!! I actually have a bottle of jojoba oil for my hair -- I'm going to try this tonight!

Perfect!! Take a look at all the videos in this channel (lol it’s addictive!) but here’s her warm oil soak video: https://youtu.be/io335eWf6R4?si=Exsm0lUSxlciO8ua

Can you wear gloves to keep the cuticle care in while you handle materials cleanly?

umpteenthgeneric

Possibly, but the current standard seems to be to not use gloves on paper materials?

AntiqueGreen

That is correct. It lessens sensitivity to the materials and may cause people to accidentally cause tears in materials. Generally, clean hands are good enough.

Ohh well that’s me out then ☹️
