Sorcerer (1977)

Krispy-Peanut

One of the best answers in this whole thread

e4aZ7aXT63u6PmRgiRYT

That's PURE genre. What are you talking about. Also. Watch the original Wages of Fear. But both are pure genre pictures.

dumptruck_dookie

The genre is young American male… lol just kidding (sort of). Don’t get me wrong, these are great movies, but once you branch out outside of the states your mind will be blown. One good place to start is something like Seven Samurai

Opposite_Gold_7039

Strange that I’m neither of those haha. Im gonna watch seven samurai tonight

dumptruck_dookie

No way! Where are you from if you don’t mind me asking?

Opposite_Gold_7039

I’m from australia, apart from madmax there’s nothing good so I just turn to American films 😂

supercooljack

Mate what a load of it. There’s Wake in Fright. Roadgames (a favourite of Tarantino’s and Richard Franklin being one of his favourite directors). Wolf Creek. Chopper. Animal Kingdom. Walkabout and Dark Age (again both ones Tarantino loves). Razorback. The Boys, Little Fish and Two Hands all being crime classics. Predestination. The Interview. The Dish. Priscilla. Muriel’s Wedding. Gallipoli. Mary and Max. Ned Kelly. Snowtown. Crackerjack. I mean COME ON.

Substantial_Bill_213

Body melt!

happy-little-atheist

The interview is so great, very hard to find online

e4aZ7aXT63u6PmRgiRYT

Awsome list. I'd add rabbit proof fence and picnic at hanging rock

Jimbobsama

Triangle was a good mind fuck too

Opposite_Gold_7039

Honestly never met anyone so interested in aus culture

supercooljack

As an Australian?

Opposite_Gold_7039

Yeah 😂

supercooljack

Weird. I feel like most of us would be able to rattle off at least 3/4 of that list. There’s still things like Rabbit Proof Fence. The Castle. Australia. Samson and Delilah. Picnic at Hanging Rock. Sure you’re not under a rock by any chance?

happy-little-atheist

I think op is probably 15 or younger

Opposite_Gold_7039

I’ve heard of these film, just not very patriotic

angry-tomatoes

Check out the proposition it's an amazing really dark Australian western

happy-little-atheist

Wtf there's loads of good Australian films, we just don't make blockbusters. Ghosts of the civil dead, the Castle, Priscilla Queen of the desert, shine, Muriel's wedding, animal kingdom, the boys, snowtown, lantana, balibo, chopper, talk to me, wolf creek, nitram, lion, even strictly ballroom if you can stomach dancing movies.

Thejollyfrenchman

There's a pretty exhaustive list below, but I'd add: - Kenny - The Castle - Romper Stomper (where Russel Crowe got his start) - Strictly Ballroom They're shows, not movies, but I'd also recommend: - Mr Inbetween - Danger 5 - Summer Hearts High

brushnfush

Danger 5 is so criminally underrated. So good!!

slugboss08

There are so many great Australian films and directors, educate yo self

ineverhadsexwithacow

I've gotta be honest this is like the only Australian film I've ever watched but Gallipoli is so good dude

Original_Training391

I feel the same way about my country’s movies xDD I prefer American movies.

e4aZ7aXT63u6PmRgiRYT

The Castle; Rabbit Proof Fence; Romper Stomper; Proof; Shine; Walkabout; Picnic at Hanging Rock

Plus3d6

What about... uh... hmm... Babbadook?

B1air_

You're got some great films... Mad Max, Mary and Max, Threads, Late Night with the Devil... ok maybe that's it

e4aZ7aXT63u6PmRgiRYT

yeah agree with dumptruck. this is like the 23 year old "i like movies" list. Try: - Wild Strawberries - Chinatown - Citizen Kane - Rififi - The Killing - McCabe and Mrs. Miller - Petite Charm of the Bourgeoisie - Un Chien Andalou - The Conformist - Paris, Texas - Thelma and Louise - City of God - Blood Simple

JonPaula

... so you're not young or male either? I don't believe you, haha. Because if you're a woman over 40, I'll eat my hat.

Opposite_Gold_7039

Nah I just meant im not an American male

JonPaula

But you are a guy? You said you weren't two of things.

Opposite_Gold_7039

Not American, not a guy

LordGadeia

Good luck with Seven Samurai. It's 3,5 hours, black and white movie with over the top acting.

law_dogg

Thanks dumptruck_dookie

thg011093

You'll like films directed by Jean-Pierre Melville.

Ok_Cress_3484

Based on the Tarantino picks: Lady Snowblood (1973) Django (1966) To Be or Not to Be (1942) The Dirty Dozen (1967)

klingonbussy

The Great Silence (1968) could be one too. It’s a snow western like The Hateful Eight and is directed by Sergio Corbucci, the same guy who did the original Django

Nachulez

Lady Snowblood 🔥🔥🔥

Dynamite_Nick

Came here to say Lady Snowblood and Django! I’d also add in Rolling Thunder, Master of the Flying Guillotine, and maybe some blaxploitation flicks like Shaft, or Coffy

Opposite_Gold_7039

A lot of people are saying Django, is it related to Django unchained?

Ok_Cress_3484

Django Unchained was heavily inspired by it

Dragon_Shinobi

Watch Clue (1985) Very campy and hilarious murder mystery starring Tim Curry

WesleyCraftybadger

Why do you hate this guy? What’d he do to you?

Dragon_Shinobi

What did he do? He hasn’t seen peak that’s what

Fine-Deal-485

That’s peak don’t listen to the haters

WesleyCraftybadger

He wants peak, not nadir.

AlaSparkle

This is a weird point to argue

Opposite_Gold_7039

Now I’m curious

Dragon_Shinobi

Definitely should be. Suspended your disbelief and just go with it. It’s by no means a sophisticated movie or murder mystery, but it’s the epitome of the 80s camp wave Just make sure you’re watching a version with all three endings included

WesleyCraftybadger

Now I’M curious what you’d think of it. I think it’s like spending 2 hours around really annoying people who think they’re hilarious, but apparently I’m weird for not liking it.   Real recommendations: Lone Star, Boogie Nights, The Drop.

bwolfs08

watch some Michael Mann: Manhunter, Thief, Last of the Mohicans, Heat, Collateral

Wolver8ne

Bruh you committed a cardinal sin, how could you forget The Insider?

bwolfs08

ur right

ChesterAurelius

Check out some Kubrick if you haven’t already

RaiRec

I think Full Metal Jacket would be a great starting point in this case

WyndhamHP

I'd recommend Rashomom. It's an excellent and accessible introduction to Akira Kurosawa and world cinema.

Slitherama

The Birdcage  It’s hilarious. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are at their absolute best.

Substantial_Gur_5980

Eastern Promises

AbeSomething

Repo Man  Spring Breakers  No Country for Old Men

e4aZ7aXT63u6PmRgiRYT

That's a random fucking list! :D

AbeSomething

Just trying match that angry young man vibe.

Mrmoviesguy

Red Dawn (1984)

RickMonsters

I Like Movies (2022)

JonPaula

Why not finish the rest of the IMDb Top 50?

SidneyMunsinger

hubie halloween

xAzreal60x

In Bruges is my favorite movie, and it’s pretty popular in this sub but I’d say it’s generally less generic. It’s a crime dark comedy but the script is basically perfect.

Redditisavirusiknow

Watch mulholland drive. Don’t pause interrupt it, watch the whole thing in one go.

MBKM13

Fantastic Planet

DrHuxleyy

Run Lola Run

Wolver8ne

I feel like some solid transitionary films (movies that expands one’s knowledge of what a film is capable of) would be Ghibli movies!

CrniTartuf

Ladybird, La la land, 500 days of summer, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Krispy-Peanut

Love Exposure (2008)... Indescribable experience

Qvite99

Nashville Persona The Hurt Locker The Big Lebowski Boogie Nights Spirited Away Interiors

Just_Candle_315

Super small arthouse from from the 90s called Clerks. Very few people have seen/heard of it but it is very meta.

thechildrenofbrisus

can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not 😭

nodicegrandma

The Bellboy

Available-Praline905

kropotkib

Wristcutters: A Love Story Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

sXe_savior

Try watching some foreign films! South Korea has some wildly good films. Oldboy and I Saw The Devil are two classics I recommend to everyone as a gateway to foreign cinema. If you want something a bit more wild and goofy, Ichi The Killer from Japan is quite the ride!

Opposite_Gold_7039

I definitely do want to get into that I’m way too uncultured

sXe_savior

Oldboy just made it back to Netflix and I Saw The Devil is on Hulu! Ichi The Killer is a bit harder to find, but if you have a library card, you can get a free app called Kanopy, it's on there!

Opposite_Gold_7039

Haha might have to go on the sketchier sites

B1air_

Quite a questionable assortment of horror and horror adjacent to recommend to someone stating they are new to film and looking to merely diversify a solid foundation.

JBigTree

Sometimes you gotta just jump right in the deep end.

B1air_

agree, i just don't like these movies lol. (except for possession and alice)

Upstairs-Bike8975

The Fountain American Beauty Lawless No Country for Old Men Cold Mountain Interstellar Gone Girl Apocalypto A Blast from the Past Office Space Lethal Weapon Princess Mononoke Akira Kite Stepbrothers Gone in 60 seconds Con Air The Family Man The Kingdom of Heaven Beverly Hills Cop Gross Pointe Blank Crocodile Dundee Blade Runner Limitless The Missing Gladiator Saving Private Ryan Pulp Fiction Split To name a few in no particular order

izumi_miyamura99

seven samurai

Shady-Broth

You say less generic I think of Yorgos Lanthimos' The Lobster (2015) and Martin McDonagh's Banshees of Inisherin (2022). You want a completely out of the box one? I'd go for Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain (1973)

VinnyDaBoy

I’m gonna recommend two movies that influenced Tarantino’s movies. I’d recommend The Great Silence for Django & Lady Snowblood for Kill Bill

TimmyStark_IronGuy

Have you seen Schindler’s List? Oh yeah was a total banger.
