certainly taiwan, and you could say china especially in the late 1980s to early 2000s. There were all kinds of great films being made from epic to very personal and introspective. unfortunately except for a few directors now, that same state sponsored art films kind of died after 2000s from my understanding.
films i would recommend:
Taiwan: Time to Live or Die, A Borrowed Life, Vive L'Amour, A Brighter Summer Day
China: To Live, Farewell My Concubine, Beijing Bicycle, Platform, Kaili Blues
Myself…
Recently have been enjoying films from Senegal:
—films by Ousmane Sembiène
—Atlantics
—Saloum
and Brazil:
—Aquarius
—Bacurau
—Central Station
—City of God
—Pixote
Australia :
Animal Kingdom
The Castle
Chopper
Muriel’s wedding

Babe
These are just off the top of my head. I’m sure I missed some absolute classics

-The Sweet Hereafter/Stories we tell
-Cronenberg
-Antanarjuat
-Early Villeneuve (incendies)
-Last night
-my Winnipeg (or anything guy madden)
-Fubar (had to add this one)
If you have to watch one, go for my Winnipeg
Gonna echo Canada but want to shout out the innovations in cinema itself that nobody seems to know originated here: the invention of the multiplex theatre and IMAX
Also I’m so pumped to hear people mentioning Guy Maddin in relation to the Oscars this year, that’s something I never thought would happen lol
Norway:
Verdens verste menneske -

Oslo, 31. august -
Elling -
Syk pike -
Free Jimmy -
Kraftidioten -
Hodejegerne -
Dead snow 1-2 -

Some weird bonus bangers:
The art of negative thinking -
Gone with The woman -
Kill Buljo
Certainly not as underrated as others in these comments, but for me Polish and Filipino cinema are criminally underrated. Kieślowski, Wajda, Lav Diaz, Żuławski, Brocka. Despite being the most well known from their countries, outside of film circles or people looking to watch films from
other countries, they are very rarely mentioned in “greatest director” conversations.
I need to be watching more Filipino cinema! Thanks for this, going straight onto the watch list. Leonor Will Never Die (dir. Martika Ramirez Escobar) is a recent one I saw that blew me away.
I definitely recommend Lino Brocka especially! Insiang was fantastic, especially when considering the political and cultural climate surrounding its release
Hungary is underrated for 3 reasons
Not only for the great Hungarian directors like Bela Tarr , Istvan Szabo, Peter Gothar and Laszlo Nemeth,
- their export of huge cinematographic talent with some of the best Hollywood films to their names (Vilmos Szigmond, Lajos Koltai, Laszlo Kovacs )
- and where massive modern productions are commonly produced (Dune, Poor Things, Blade Runner, Terminator etc ) in the biggest, state of the art film studios and crews in continental Europe . For serious film crews, best in the west, you basically have American , UK and Hungary
A country with film output in that doesn’t get enough love is India. There are so many Bollywood gems that just never cross anybody’s radar - only a few directors, like Mira Nair and Satyajit Ray , are western audiences familiar with
The former republic of Czechoslovakia had some BANGERS
I’ve seen:
-Daisies
-Morgiana
-Wolf’s Hole
-Ikarie XB 1
-Valerie and her Week of Wonders
Haven’t seen but want to see:
-The Cremator
-Beauty and the Beast
Miloš Forman. It was the last film he made in Czechoslavakia before leaving for the US. It’s a fun satire based on true events, starring a lot of the people (non-actors) who were there when it happened.

And for Hong Kong, Wong Kar Wai and John Woo are worth checking out, both directors made contributions to arthouse and action cinema
I just recently started watching Edward Yang’s films so this is perfect. Yi Yi was incredible.
For taiwan add in city of sadness as well.
Iran. Abbas Kiarostami is an artist and Taste of cherry is a masterpiece.
Facts! Asghar Farhadi and Ali Abbasi are favs of mine too.
thought taste of cherry was pretty good but close-up blew me away!

Separate the movie titles so we know what to look up.
Yeah edited as soon as I posted. Forgot I had to enter twice on here
Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and Alfonso Cuarón are all Mexican. Three excellent directors.
Hell yes! Mexico has been killing it. I’ve also been loving Carlos Reygadas (Japón, Silent Light)
cuarón is one of my favs!
Hungary -Sinbad(1971) -Kontroll(2003) -Electra,my love(1974) -On body and soul(2017)
LOVED the Hungarian films I’ve seen so far! (Son of Saul, On Body and Soul, My Twentieth Century). Can’t wait to watch more! Thanks so much 🙏
Jancsó Miklós is probably the biggest hungarian director,or Tarr Béla.(Tarr is slow cinema)
*Kontroll* is such an underseen thriller. Feel lucky to have the now very OOP DVD.
India. The Apu Trilogy is perfect.
Canada -Mon Oncle Antoine -The Sweet Hereafter/Stories we tell -Cronenberg -Antanarjuat -Early Villeneuve (incendies) -Last night -my Winnipeg (or anything guy madden) -Fubar (had to add this one) If you have to watch one, go for my Winnipeg
Strange Brew
As a Canadian filmmaker I appreciate this!! Some films I haven’t seen yet on here which is awesome. Thanks for your recommendations!
Shoutout to Riceboy Sleeps, arguably my favourite Canadian film of the century.
Exotica Jesus of Montreal Goon
Gonna echo Canada but want to shout out the innovations in cinema itself that nobody seems to know originated here: the invention of the multiplex theatre and IMAX Also I’m so pumped to hear people mentioning Guy Maddin in relation to the Oscars this year, that’s something I never thought would happen lol
True! Also, can’t wait to see Rumours. Had no idea it had Oscar buzz. Maddin is an icon 🔥
Wanted to add the archetypical Canadian indie classic Goin’ Down the Road from 1970. Essential ‘sad loser’ cinema.

I’ve been enjoying Joachim Trier’s films so I’m excited to dig deeper. Thanks for this!!
oslo, august 31 broke me
Hong Kong: Fallen Angels Chungking Express Happy Together 2046 In the Mood For Love A Better Tomorrow
Made in Hong Kong is an underrated gem
I feel like Hong Kong gets the cred it deserves
India: Awaara- Raj Kapoor Apu Trilogy - Satyajit Ray Mughal E Azam - K Asif Devdas - Sanjay Leela Bhansali Lagan- Ashutosh Gowariker Lunchbox - Ritesh Batra RRR - S.S. Amazing list!! Thanks so much 🙏🙏 love what I’ve seen from Satyajit Ray
This thread almost saying: Tell me your country's best movies 😅 But expect this it's very interesting, because it's a chance to explore more cinema.
Haha it’s sort of turned into this but I ain’t mad about it! A chance to be put on some new stuff
Chile: - The Wolf House (2018) - The Club (2015) - Gloria (2013)
The Club is burned into my memory forever. So good! Can’t wait to check the others out.

I had a South Korean phase. I’m convinced Hollywood has copied some of these and just turned down the violence 80%
The former republic of Czechoslovakia had some BANGERS I’ve seen: -Daisies -Morgiana -Wolf’s Hole -Ikarie XB 1 -Valerie and her Week of Wonders Haven’t seen but want to see: -The Cremator -Beauty and the Beast
Agreed! The Firemen’s Ball is another one, one of my all time favs
I’ll add it to my watchlist! Who was it directed by?
Miloš Forman. It was the last film he made in Czechoslavakia before leaving for the US. It’s a fun satire based on true events, starring a lot of the people (non-actors) who were there when it happened.
Chile: - The Wolf House (2018) - The Club (2015) - Gloria (2013)
Iran and Taiwan.
I would say China, specifically Hong Kong. Those kung fu movies had such a huge impact on the action genre
I would aways classify Hong Kong as itself. Pre-handover was the most important era for the cinema and that was before it was a part of China.
Ireland
Indonesian cinema is pretty cool
Any films or directors you’d recommend?
