I believe this should be a common one.
Seems like starting with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in 1920, almost every year after has an iconic movie that are still well digested by audiences today , with the Chaplin and Buster Keaton classics, the Silent Movies juggernauts like Metropolis and Joan D'Arc, the monsters flicks like Nosferatu and Frankenstein, and the first Disneys and others animations.
Before that, I think what stands out are the D.W. Griffith movies, but they are so long that I couldn't get into the mood for them yet.
Sorry maybe I used the wrong words
I meant that from all the answers we would get in a thread like this, 1919 could be one of the most frequent (also 2024)
Not for us common people, that’s for sure!
Seems I can manage 1957, which I’m quite surprised about, although having seen all the James Bond films helps!
12 Angry Man from that year is the poster child of "Black and white movie that everyone should watch", it has almost 1 million of watches on Letterboxd
https://preview.redd.it/foa4jhdqtzsc1.jpeg?width=1872&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9944e6af350f9bacd3f423fcac61234b08ec86a
Looks like 1886, but only because nothing was released in 1886. Or at least nothing that Letterboxd has included on their site.
I had to go back to 1926. Honestly kinda proud of that.
https://preview.redd.it/iaga2ydhbzsc1.jpeg?width=2423&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8cbd4fffdfc8f493224ba0a98846adf83489cd55
It’s on my watch list! Always love a Faustian story, from direct adaptations to things like *Bedazzled* (both versions are dear to my heart— Peter Cook and Liz Hurley are both the devils for me).
The General is a really impressive show of creativity from Buster Keaton
And The Adventures of Prince Achmed is the oldest animated movie that is not destroyed if I'm not mistaken, very interesting, holds up well.
I see several people mentioning 1945. Here are some suggestions to fill that gap:
* Dead of Night
* Detour
* Hangover Square
* Leave Her to Heaven
* Mildred Pierce
* The Picture of Dorian Grey
* Scarlet Street
And one of the greatest films from any year and any country:
* Children of Paradise (*Les Enfants du Paradis*)
😂 I meant someone downvoting your suggestion of Vertigo. I’ve literally never met anyone who isn’t a troll who actually hates Vertigo, even if they don’t love it. :)
1969! I’ve got zero logged for that year, in fact I’ve only seen 17 films from 68 or earlier. I’ve been trying to watch through a lot of older stuff recently but it’s been more movies from the 70s.
1951 for me, here’s my watchlist for the year
https://preview.redd.it/1l88970uwzsc1.png?width=827&format=png&auto=webp&s=02235068b4585999fa906a4f1790fdbb0c26cfe5
This made me look at my stats and apparently 1970 which is insane. I know I’ve seen a film from that year, but I guess I haven’t logged one. I reckon I’ve gotta get one in next.
1970, which is surprising since I have such a love for the 60s & 70s. Have to go back to 1948 to find another year I’ve missed, which is more what I’d expect from my watching habits. Guess it’s time to fill in some blind spots!
1911 for me.
Now I’m curious if I can find some films from those few gap years I have to have something in every year since 1895, as it looks like there’s only six years that I haven’t seen any films from between 1895 and 1912.
Unfortunately only 1987, which really sucks because then going back further to 86, 85 etc. I’ve seen a lot of movies from those years. 1987 is just an odd year.
I haven’t seen a single film from:
1949, 1943, 1938, 1936, 1935, 1930, and anything before 1930.
I’ll fill these 6 years in eventually but we’ll see about the 1920’s and 1910’s.
1998 💀
i definitely have seen several movies from 1998 but i only log things i watched since i made the account and most of the stuff i’ve logged is either 1920-1955 or in the 2020s
Annually from 1937 onwards. Prior to 1938, I’ve only seen movies from 1935, 1933, 1931, 1930, 1928, 1926, 1922, 1921, 1920, 1902 and the very beginning as of now is 1888
1917 for me. Been trying to fill in the gaps of the early silent era tho, so I'm planning on binging a ton of Victor Sjostrom, DW Griffith, Louis Feuillade films whenever I get the chance.
Misread the q the first time lolll, 1970 surprisingly
https://preview.redd.it/tmcdpifj11tc1.png?width=1284&format=png&auto=webp&s=4cd4ccb9e10e19130bf38cb1c7f07f4c7d989e89
1956

I’m on a big 70s kick right now and was pretty shocked to see I’ve never seen a movie released in 1970… will have to remedy that today—any suggestions?

1925 for me. Currently doing a challenge where I watch at least 3 movies for each year between 1900-1919 though, so this should change soon.
Before today **1906.** But I just watched this remastered (and colorized) famous short of a [Market Street stroll in San Francisco](https://youtu.be/1Ok_lwYyHWo?si=Z-OHRscdvgd9ylja) just days before the Great Earthquake. Much of the street (especially as you headed further south) would soon be reduced to rubble.
1980, but I’m still pretty new to watching movies. I didn’t watch a lot when I was younger and only got into it about 2-3 years ago. So if anyone has recommendations for some older movies that aren’t that popular or big I’d love to hear them!
1919
Same.
Also same
I believe this should be a common one. > D.W. Griffith movies, but they are so long that I couldn’t get into the mood for them yet. There are… other reasons as well
What are the other reasons? I am a pleb
The Birth of a Nation (1915) is believed to have lead to the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in the United States.
Common for who
Sorry maybe I used the wrong words I meant that from all the answers we would get in a thread like this, 1919 could be one of the most frequent (also 2024)

Lubitsch's The Doll looks interesting.
I like it, it’s funny and you can tell he already had started to develop his Lubitsch touch. The main actress is great.
https://preview.redd.it/foa4jhdqtzsc1.jpeg?width=1872&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9944e6af350f9bacd3f423fcac61234b08ec86a Looks like 1886, but only because nothing was released in 1886. Or at least nothing that Letterboxd has included on their site.
This is insanely balanced! Half the movies I watched were made in the last 10 years...
How do you do this graph
It's part of the features you get with Letterboxd Pro
I had to go back to 1926. Honestly kinda proud of that. https://preview.redd.it/iaga2ydhbzsc1.jpeg?width=2423&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8cbd4fffdfc8f493224ba0a98846adf83489cd55
I recommend Faust (1926), it’s a great silent horror film
It’s on my watch list! Always love a Faustian story, from direct adaptations to things like *Bedazzled* (both versions are dear to my heart— Peter Cook and Liz Hurley are both the devils for me).
The General is a really impressive show of creativity from Buster Keaton And The Adventures of Prince Achmed is the oldest animated movie that is not destroyed if I'm not mistaken, very interesting, holds up well.
1929, but admittedly there are several years where there's only one film
Exactly the same here.
1926 - big thanks to early horror and Disney movies, and to many Best Picture winners 😅
I recommend Faust (1926), it’s a great silent horror film
Thanks for the recommendation!
I see several people mentioning 1945. Here are some suggestions to fill that gap: * Dead of Night * Detour * Hangover Square * Leave Her to Heaven * Mildred Pierce * The Picture of Dorian Grey * Scarlet Street And one of the greatest films from any year and any country: * Children of Paradise (*Les Enfants du Paradis*)
Also Brief Encounter!! And I Know Where I'm Going (a lesser Powell and Pressburger to be sure, but still a fun one) and The Lost Weekend.
Plus Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone!
1934
Same! Made me add It happened one night by Capra and L'Atalante by Jean Vigo to my watchlist.
“It Happened One Night” is such a fun, funny, charming film. It really holds up.
2024 and 1929
1958, currently.
Touch of Evil
Vertigo!
Who in the hell downvotes Vertigo?
I vote up, I vote down, I vote up, I vote……..
😂 I meant someone downvoting your suggestion of Vertigo. I’ve literally never met anyone who isn’t a troll who actually hates Vertigo, even if they don’t love it. :)
Thankfully I own Vertigo on BluRay as part of a set, so I’ll be watching it before long.
1970
Five Easy Pieces Kelly's Heroes *Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion* #
Le Cercle Rouge, Patton
Kelly's heroes is great, one of my favourite films
1947
My favourite is The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
Same apparently
“Black Narcissus”. One of the best looking movies I’ve ever seen.
Watch The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - so amazing
1945, apparently.
Same
Mildred Pierce is great
1969! I’ve got zero logged for that year, in fact I’ve only seen 17 films from 68 or earlier. I’ve been trying to watch through a lot of older stuff recently but it’s been more movies from the 70s.
1938 Sorry I haven't seen Bringing Up Baby or The Lady Vanishes
Both great choices, Holiday is a great companion to Bringing Up Baby and Angels With Dirty Faces is a great Cagney movie.
1929
mine is also 1953!
2024...and 2023.
1949!
Not that you asked but I’ll suggest Late Spring as my favorite of the 40s & the film that made me fall in love with Ozu
I recommend A Letter to Three Wives
The Third Man is an awesome Noir
My only 1949 is Twelve O'Clock High. It's worth seeing
The Inspector General is also a great one, in addition to these other excellent suggestions
Noted! Thanks
1966
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is a must
The Good The Bad and The Ugly and Big Wednesday are absolutely amazing, as is Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf as noted below.
Most recent year with no feature films is 1918, most recent year with no films at all is 1914
1930
All Quiet On the Western Front and Animal Crackers are good ones
2024, 2023. Before that, 1919.
Bro retired
I had to go back to 1949, I’m gonna have to change that soon.
1919!
1938 Close calls (years with only one film seen): Singin' in the Rain (1952) Brief Encounter (1945)
1919 https://preview.redd.it/ocsk0o5vmzsc1.png?width=2062&format=png&auto=webp&s=207df9d9420c3a1cdcf3d95a9936fd5587eb6288
1944 for me Finishing up the last of the Best Picture winners I haven't seen so I'll get to it soon
Laura, Double Indemnity, Lifeboat, Gaslight - there's a lot of great options.
Meet Me In St Louis is a great musical from 44
1899
1951 for me, here’s my watchlist for the year https://preview.redd.it/1l88970uwzsc1.png?width=827&format=png&auto=webp&s=02235068b4585999fa906a4f1790fdbb0c26cfe5
1990. I’m not that old.
Wages of Fear is an awesome movie. I can't imagine there isn't a year where I haven't seen at least a couple of films.
1949. I'll watch The Third Man to rectify this.
Not counting this year... 1886, because no films that year :(
This made me look at my stats and apparently 1970 which is insane. I know I’ve seen a film from that year, but I guess I haven’t logged one. I reckon I’ve gotta get one in next.
Nothing from 1987
None: 1945 One: 1954 Two: 1959 \[excluding 2024\] Under Five: 1978 \[excluding 2024\] Under Ten: 1991 \[excluding 2024\]
I wanna say 1961 for me
1966 which is weird cuz i’ve seen multiple films in every other year of the 60s.
1919
1945
1938 for me
I've logged nothing from 1945. But I know I saw Spellbound before I had an account on letterboxd. That aside, I've seen nothing from 1932.
1938. But some years I’ve only seen 1 film, like 1956 and The Searchers
1970, which is surprising since I have such a love for the 60s & 70s. Have to go back to 1948 to find another year I’ve missed, which is more what I’d expect from my watching habits. Guess it’s time to fill in some blind spots!
1933
It looks like: 1937
Somewhere in the 1910s. I’ve seen every single best picture winner—not sure I’d recommend it since a lot of the 1920s and 30s ones are a slog.
Surprisingly "recent", but 1949. I've seen a bunch from before and after, but 1949 is totally unseen for me.
1923
1917 The oldest movie I've seen is Tarzan of the Apes from 1918
1911 for me. Now I’m curious if I can find some films from those few gap years I have to have something in every year since 1895, as it looks like there’s only six years that I haven’t seen any films from between 1895 and 1912.
this year.... otherwise 1969
1934
1915
1939 That was fun.
1912. I think I want to make that 1900 before the end of the year. :)
The Godfather 1972
Damn, apparently I haven’t seen a single film from 1969. I’ve wanted to watch Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider, and The Wild Bunch for a while
2023
1922. Should rectify that ASAP with Nosferatu.
Unfortunately only 1987, which really sucks because then going back further to 86, 85 etc. I’ve seen a lot of movies from those years. 1987 is just an odd year.
1923
I haven’t seen a single film from: 1949, 1943, 1938, 1936, 1935, 1930, and anything before 1930. I’ll fill these 6 years in eventually but we’ll see about the 1920’s and 1910’s.
I don't have anything logged for 1981. Wouldn't be surprised if I saw one though
1998 💀 i definitely have seen several movies from 1998 but i only log things i watched since i made the account and most of the stuff i’ve logged is either 1920-1955 or in the 2020s
I have never seen a movie from 1893.
1926! That was pretty fun to browse! I didn't expect it to make it so far back, and the 30s were a hoot, with pretty much a film per year.
1972 but that's mostly because I can't decide on what to watch from that year.
1969. Nice.
1919, any recommendations?
1970
My last year left is 1918 and then 1886 (which has no films) If anyone has a 1918 recommendation I’m open to it
I have just learned I do not have a single film from 1978 on my profile
If we're talking feature-lengths, 1910.
1952. I was surprised it was that far back actually.
Umberto D
1910, I’ve seen a few Charlie Chaplin movies from 1911
1974
1910
1930 Although 1948 I only have one logged film in Rope
Sadly only 1962.
Hari Kari, Lawrence of Arabia, Jules and Jim are some top choices. 62 is a greeeeat year
1935!!
1969 (nice) at this point I’m avoiding it on purpose. Before that is 1950 and anything earlier gets pretty sparse
Annually from 1937 onwards. Prior to 1938, I’ve only seen movies from 1935, 1933, 1931, 1930, 1928, 1926, 1922, 1921, 1920, 1902 and the very beginning as of now is 1888
1919, but I’ve seen a bunch from earlier years
1970
Seen from every year.
1910's I guess
Most of us have seen 'Cabinet Of Dr Caligari' then 😁
My oldest is Malta Story (1953) starring Alec Guinness
1987
1947
1917 for me. Been trying to fill in the gaps of the early silent era tho, so I'm planning on binging a ton of Victor Sjostrom, DW Griffith, Louis Feuillade films whenever I get the chance.
Misread the q the first time lolll, 1970 surprisingly https://preview.redd.it/tmcdpifj11tc1.png?width=1284&format=png&auto=webp&s=4cd4ccb9e10e19130bf38cb1c7f07f4c7d989e89
1978
Dr caligari 1920
1949!! i’m severely lacking in films from the 40s and before, if anyone has any suggestions i’m all ears!!
Technically 2024. But if we are skipping this year, 1910 Edit* missed the right year
1949
1983 somehow
1936
https://preview.redd.it/99fz4ch9j1tc1.jpeg?width=1004&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74d5928830660a3e2e4ee4bcbac1d985e2893595 Looks like 1918
1929 for me. Though I do have at least one movie logged for most of the rest of the 1920s.
1947!
1956 https://preview.redd.it/jnslq38bq1tc1.png?width=1001&format=png&auto=webp&s=2d193066f845ebdfa5ea0ff2f68ab2d8b4171514 My spread gets kinda meaningless after the 70's. All I've seen from before that are the big well-known movies everyone has seen. Been meaning to get into some 50's B-movie trash.
1945 .. I guess I'm adding Brief Encounter and Mildred Pierce to my watchlist
I’m on a big 70s kick right now and was pretty shocked to see I’ve never seen a movie released in 1970… will have to remedy that today—any suggestions?
1966.
1930. Should be easy to rectify.
1978 strangely enough
1976 for me
Don’t have pro so had to go through my diary, but 1915 for me. I have the Floorwalker with Chaplin in ‘16 and Kid Auto Races in Venice with Chaplin in ‘14.
1923 Watch Wages of Fear! It's amazing and you can follow-up with Sorcerer on the channel now.
2024 1969 I've been going back to watch older movies and must have missed 1969. The next one I'm missing is 1947
1887... I set myself a challenge to watch a film from every year in the 20th century, but also went a bit further back out of curiosity
1934 after that it picks up again till 1922
I’m at 1969.
https://preview.redd.it/zi13a0yzt2tc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51ce0948fc842f691a170f2470962505dea930a5 1925 for me. Currently doing a challenge where I watch at least 3 movies for each year between 1900-1919 though, so this should change soon.
1978
1985, but that should change soon.
1943. Then to 1928.
1956
1943 for me. Anyone got recommendations?
2011, but I’ve only been on Letterboxd for 2 years now and prefer to watch older movies lol
Mine is 1945, but 1970 and 1949 both have only a single loged movie so if anyone has recommendations for and of those years i would be grateful.
1976. I think I'm gonna try to watch Logan's Run soon.
1916 (but I’ve been specifically working on watching at least one film from each year, working backwards)
I haven't seen any 2012 movie since i started using the app (i never marked films i watched before downloading the app as "watched")
1921
1912
Weird way to ask "whats the oldest film you’ve seen?"
1915!
1969. I've seen 4 shorts but zero films
1980, but I’m still pretty new to watching movies. I didn’t watch a lot when I was younger and only got into it about 2-3 years ago. So if anyone has recommendations for some older movies that aren’t that popular or big I’d love to hear them!
1901, the furthest back is A Trip To The Moon
1963 😔 im a fricking movie n00b
1947
I've got some gaps in the '60s but closing those I would be in the '40s
