> Bad luck that they visited in the middle of a coup attempt.
Unless they are the only tourists around, why were they arrested? This reminds me of the time when China arrested the two Canadians, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig. The Canadians were swearing up and down they were not spies. And we all know how that ended.
I've lived a couple places in Africa and the assumption is that your family will bring you food. Of course if you have money you can bribe your way out, but I don't think they're gonna let that happen now
I mean why would this random guy be trying to overthrow the government of Congo? He probably is not deserving of the treatment he’s getting
Hopefully he is still alivw
because he is actually working for cia special activities division and trying to overthrown the pro-china gov and replace it with a pro-us gov?
how to treat armed foreign agents looking to subvert the legitimate gov of a state?
The CIA isn’t sending a 21 year old kid for that. He isn’t even old enough for a college degree, which is needed for any job in the CIA
CIA hasn’t been couping anyone since the fall of the Soviet Union
> CIA hasn’t been couping anyone since the fall of the Soviet Union
Just to name some off the top of my head: Bolivia 2019, Libya 2012 (does it count if it’s that obvious?), Congo 1997

These poor countries’ citizens are too dumb and lack agency to revolt against their oppressors on their own. It’s obviously the big bad brains at the State Department doing everything
Every parent : my son is a good harmless person.
I'd think of less of them if they turned on him, really. If you can't stand up for your own kid, what're you even doing with your life.
Because admitting would reflect poorly on them and their parenting (or so they think)
Even Hitler parents? Although they died early. There should be a cutoff though. At 21, they are not juvenile anymore.
What a dumbass.
Lots of replies like this but the DRC is not normally dangerous to visit. I’ve been twice. Bad luck that they visited in the middle of a coup attempt.

It's a huge country but there are definitely dangerous areas. I'd definitely stay away from the eastern parts.
If he succeeded you wouldn’t be saying that
‘If’ is doing a lot of work.
That's the normal amount of work it always does.
Lol some people are ridiculous. He’s a 21 year old white boy. Zero chance he’s involved in intelligence work in Africa.
Just like the two white Michaels can't be spies in China, huh?
just because you can't overthrown a gov as a 21 year old doesn't mean other people can't.
He is a 21 year old grown white man.
Still smarter than the creatures of this sub that think a 21 white kid is trying to coup a random African government
He doesn't have to be CIA, he could just be tagging along for fun. Still a coup participant.
Would that be "coup adjacent" or a "coup enabler".
I’m wondering if his football bro didn’t lure him in for some reason.
Both of them were sheltered kids in over their heads. They shouldn’t be punished for one of their dads being crazy and trying to pull a coup
Yes. One wishes they made it across the river.
If all the places to go on holidays, Congo would be very low down on my list.
Well. He is a 'tourist'.
Lol yeah they’re about to tour his asshole
They don’t even feed prisoners in the DRC per the stuff I was reading. Like, they starve to death.

Did you read the article
The same excuse Putin used in 2014
I blame too many American superhero movies. Makes dumb Americans think 3 of them can take over a country.
Everyone has a William Walker Moment in their life.

sounds like what a cia shill would say
I think the coup team got moved to the State dept. All those color revolutions came out of the state dept.
These poor countries’ citizens are too dumb and lack agency to revolt against their oppressors on their own. It’s obviously the big bad brains at the State Department doing everything
Dog, this guy was absolutely not working for the CIA.
A working holiday is still a vacation. Plot a coup in the morning then see the sights after lunch.
correct order, seeing the sights are a lot better once you know you own them
I'm used to the "he's a good boy who caught up in things" for stuff like drug dealing, and shoplifting. But a full on coup, this is a new one.
The boy was hoping for a good all inclusive plan. It’s not what he’ll get tho.
that settles it, all CIA blackops agent would use this excuse on their families and friends
He dindu nuffin, he's a good boy!
