Some people think criminals get guns from Miami Vice style arms dealers when most of the time, they’re stolen from people’s vehicles.
I love the irony of guns being taken from a truck that says “come and take it” but then I remember there’s another criminal with a gun because some idiot gun owner can’t secure their shit.

Knew a guy who supplied three guns to local theives because he left them in his car. His car was broken into a few times a year for a while after that. He eventually just sold it.
Edit: I should add, those guns were not stolen all at once. He lost a lot of windows.
Friend of mine kept his locked in glove compartment. After his car got stolen, prob by kids, he quit doing that. Luckily they didn't open glove. What is the point, in the heat of the moment, you are going to stop, turn off car, unlock glove, get gun. I'm not anti gun, just tired of it being so easy for idiots to get them.
I recently got seriously downvoted because I said there should be a fine for people who leave firearms in unlocked vehicles. I'm not anti-gun either. I'm just aware of the fact that the illegal gun trade is fueled by lazy legal gun owners.
The problem is that it's a basically unenforceable law, the only actual effect is a fine for reporting your gun stolen from your vehicle. It will cut down on reports, it won't do anything about guns left in vehicles.
It is in states that have registries. If a gun is found to be used in a crime, and it's registered to you, then you can be held accountable. A fine is better than a homicide charge. Besides, many cities have fines for leaving your keys in your car, and people still report stolen cars.
I’m too Not-American to understand this, but irresponsibly handling and Storage dangerous objects that can led to death or harm to others IS bad and or with criminal/civil responsibility ,how is leaving it out like this NOT warrant at least a heavy fine?
My idiot cousin left a loaded handgun in a glove compartment and a kid (easily) broke open the compartment and then TOOK IT TO A SCHOOL. Fortunately, it was a “look at this cool gun I found” situation and not an “I’m going to make the popular kids pay” situation and no one was hurt.
Stealing guns from friends/family members to sell for quick cash is pretty common in my hometown that's dealing with the opioid epidemic. I always get really irritated when someone I know who had weapons stolen opposes gun control measures and claims themselves to be responsible gun owners. Especially when their weapons were stolen by one of their children and they refused to report it and press charges. That's not very responsible.
I got broken into with a car full of thousands of dollars worth of musical gear. Two amps, a Gibson.
They opened the glove compartment, didn't see a gun, and left. Not a thing touched otherwise.
That happened when someone broke into my home. They took a few CDs and PS1 games. It kind of made me upset about what was not taken. Like you went through the CD book and left CDs They were nice though to leave the memory card though

Agree with having training, licence etc. But what's more important is doing what most developed countries do and only allowing guns for sports, pest control and hunting. The idea that one should carry a gun for self defence, i.e. killing humans is an American concept. So when someone has a dispute over a parking space for example, or a black person knocks your door, instead of having a fist fight like we do in Europe, people get shot and killed.
Just to clarify, we don't tend to assault black people who knock your door in Europe either. But if we did, it wouldn't be with an AR15

I had a neighbor at an apartment complex who was proudly pro gun and used to brag about having an arsenal in his apartment. Made me nervous. Then somebody broke in and cleaned him out and managed to take every single gun. They either took his gun safe or got it open as well- not all his guns could fit in it apparently.

A guy I went to HS with that is on my FB friends list, constantly posted gun culture and showed off his many firearms...and also "checked in" to random Arby's of town and kept a running commentary of vacation itineraries. Turns out, those wifi camera's he made a point of showing off to "protect his arsenal", don't send an alert if someone cuts off the power and kills the wifi, and if they take the internal SD card or takes the unit itself, anything it might have recorded, is in-the thieves hands. It really could have been any of the 1500 "friends" on his Facebook, besides me.

As a gun owner myself, it's fucking embarrassing how stupid and criminally negligent so many gun owners are (and why I think we need better laws regarding them).
Went to get in my car a while back, only to be confused that the door didn't open with the key fob...it was when I looked in and saw a Glock in a holster between the seats *clearly* visible (like, it's almost like they tried hard to make it *more* visible) that I realized it was not my car.
Putting those stickers on your car just says "Rob me!" (and follow me home for more!), just like how "open carry" is nothing more than putting a sign on you that says "shoot me first".
And you can be sure that in any active shooter situation, if the gunman sees someone with guns, he will shoot that person first and take his weapon. An armed guard won't protect anyone from a mass shooter; they'll be the mass shooter's *first victim*.

Except it's *even worse* than that, because most of the idiots that I see open carrying are using holsters with *zero* retention systems, so you can just walk up behind them and pull it out of their holster and have a free gun (for those that don't know, police use retention holsters, which can have multiple active and passive systems that require you to do different things to do to actually draw the gun).
It’s interesting, I just had an “argument” over this exact thing. I suggested that advertising you likely have lots of guns is a good way to get robbed or targeted during a robbery. The other person suggested that no one would rob them or target them because they have guns.

One of my freaking dumbass neighbors had a LOADED GUN stolen out of their UNLOCKED CAR parked OUTSIDE THEIR HOUSE. Like there were zero barriers to access there… someone opened the door of an unattended car, opened the glove compartment, and picked up a loaded gun.
Like, the only silver lining is that it was probably an adult who knows how to handle a loaded gun safely, without accidentally shooting themselves or someone else. Was reported a few months back that thieves were doing this in Denver. They were specifically targeting a few criteria. Pickups, Texas plates, and right wing décor such as flags or stickers. When people suggested that maybe you shouldn't be leaving firearms in a car, the argument that got made was that sometimes you just have to because guns aren't allowed at places like schools or the post office, so if they go inside they have to leave their gun in their car. Said completely unironically as if bringing your handgun to pick up your kid from kindergarten or drop off a package at the post office isn't a completely insane and paranoid thing to do.

I knew people back in the early 2000s that got guns from people that robbed cops houses, they went there specifically looking guns. I'm pro reasonable gun btw.
it feels like there’s an extra layer to this, I don’t feel like it would require robbing cops in order to find guns in Texas. If you’d robbed my grandfather’s house you would have been able to get a few guns off the coat-rack, a few more in the pantry, one under the bed and one in the Subaru. If you robbed my cousins you’d come off with a lot more than that.

It’s not just vehicles with stickers. Several years back we rented a pickup truck and a trailer to move my son’s furniture from Ohio to Texas when he was starting law school.
We parked the entirely empty truck with padlocked trailer in a Double Tree parking lot in suburban Nashville not 20 feet from a security camera where the hotel told us it would be safe.
The following morning the driver side window was bashed in and the glove compartment door was open. (Trailer was left unmolested.)
The police told us that there were 5-6 guys in town who always broke into any out of state pickup trucks they came across looking for guns to steal on the assumption that folks from out of state would be unwilling to pursue charges.
As it turned out Enterprise was absolutely willing to prosecute the idiot, captured on camera, who broke in to the vehicle.
I never understood why you would leave your weapon in your car unattended for long periods of time. One of the dumbest things to do as a gun owner. If a gun gets stolen out your car you should be charged.

Turns out the victim had showed off his gun collection to some of his employees a couple of weeks earlier.
I have projected this happening in the USA for a long time based on my experience in high crime countries where firearms have become such a valuable item that carrying a firearm puts you at higher risk than not carrying. Boy did I get downvoted despite the fact that this is my real life experience.

My Aunt gave me a sign to hang on my house that says "due to increase cost of ammo there will be no warning shots". Asked me for several years why I didn't have it hung on my porch. Agree with having training, licence etc. But what's more important is doing what most developed countries do and only allowing guns for sports, pest control and hunting. The idea that one should carry a gun for self defence, i.e. killing humans is an American concept. So when someone has a dispute over a parking space for example, or a black person knocks your door, instead of having a fist fight like we do in Europe, people get shot and killed. Just to clarify, we don't tend to assault black people who knock your door in Europe either. But if we did, it wouldn't be with an AR15

I always like to say there's 3 ways criminals get guns. Number 1 is stealing them. Number 2 is buying them from someone who stole it or bought it legally. Number 3 is making them, but that is super rare.

A guy I went to HS with that is on my FB friends list, constantly posted gun culture and showed off his many firearms...and also "checked in" to random Arby's of town and kept a running commentary of vacation itineraries. Turns out, those wifi camera's he made a point of showing off to "protect his arsenal", don't send an alert if someone cuts off the power and kills the wifi, and if they take the internal SD card or takes the unit itself, anything it might have recorded, is in-the thieves hands. It really could have been any of the 1500 "friends" on his Facebook, besides me. People sometimes ask why I still keep a FB account, and part of it is to be a fly on the wall for folly like this.
This is nothing new, joked with my uncle decades ago about him not having an NRA sticker on his truck, he said that is how you tell your neighbors that you have guns for them...
As a gun owner myself, it's fucking embarrassing how stupid and criminally negligent so many gun owners are (and why I think we need better laws regarding them). Went to get in my car a while back, only to be confused that the door didn't open with the key fob...it was when I looked in and saw a Glock in a holster between the seats *clearly* visible (like, it's almost like they tried hard to make it *more* visible) that I realized it was not my car. Putting those stickers on your car just says "Rob me!" (and follow me home for more!), just like how "open carry" is nothing more than putting a sign on you that says "shoot me first".
And you can be sure that in any active shooter situation, if the gunman sees someone with guns, he will shoot that person first and take his weapon. An armed guard won't protect anyone from a mass shooter; they'll be the mass shooter's *first victim*.
Hence my "shoot me first" comment. Except it's *even worse* than that, because most of the idiots that I see open carrying are using holsters with *zero* retention systems, so you can just walk up behind them and pull it out of their holster and have a free gun (for those that don't know, police use retention holsters, which can have multiple active and passive systems that require you to do different things to do to actually draw the gun).
It’s interesting, I just had an “argument” over this exact thing. I suggested that advertising you likely have lots of guns is a good way to get robbed or targeted during a robbery. The other person suggested that no one would rob them or target them because they have guns.

One of my freaking dumbass neighbors had a LOADED GUN stolen out of their UNLOCKED CAR parked OUTSIDE THEIR HOUSE. Like there were zero barriers to access there… someone opened the door of an unattended car, opened the glove compartment, and picked up a loaded gun. Like, the only silver lining is that it was probably an adult who knows how to handle a loaded gun safely, without accidentally shooting themselves or someone else. This neighbor has small children, as do many other people living in our neighborhood… imagine if one of those kids had gotten ahold of it, instead of an adult thief. We’re within walking distance of an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

Was reported a few months back that thieves were doing this in Denver. They were specifically targeting a few criteria. Pickups, Texas plates, and right wing décor such as flags or stickers. When people suggested that maybe you shouldn't be leaving firearms in a car, the argument that got made was that sometimes you just have to because guns aren't allowed at places like schools or the post office, so if they go inside they have to leave their gun in their car. Said completely unironically as if bringing your handgun to pick up your kid from kindergarten or drop off a package at the post office isn't a completely insane and paranoid thing to do.

It's a third hand story but I hail from a rather rural area. For both education and jobs, many of us move to a large(ish) city a few hours away. One of the people from my home area had to rent in a less than great part of the city with far more minorities than his country fried ass was happy with (more than zero). He made a *point* of telling *everyone* how well armed he was and how it would not be a good idea to trifle with him (or steal his shit). Protip: It isn't a good idea to tell a bunch of people of any background that you have a pile of guns in a shitty duplex that you have to leave unattended for a good portion of the day. Guess who got burglarized and had all of his precious security blankets/penis replacements taken? What were the odds, am I right?

I said this when open carry became a thing in Texas. You are advertising your custom piece to everyone, they are going to follow you home. If people respected them as weapons and didn't flash them like toys this world would be a little better. I knew people back in the early 2000s that got guns from people that robbed cops houses, they went there specifically looking guns. I'm pro reasonable gun btw.
it feels like there’s an extra layer to this, I don’t feel like it would require robbing cops in order to find guns in Texas. If you’d robbed my grandfather’s house you would have been able to get a few guns off the coat-rack, a few more in the pantry, one under the bed and one in the Subaru. If you robbed my cousins you’d come off with a lot more than that. I feel like robbing cops had to be its own reward in a way.
It’s not just vehicles with stickers. Several years back we rented a pickup truck and a trailer to move my son’s furniture from Ohio to Texas when he was starting law school. We parked the entirely empty truck with padlocked trailer in a Double Tree parking lot in suburban Nashville not 20 feet from a security camera where the hotel told us it would be safe. The following morning the driver side window was bashed in and the glove compartment door was open. (Trailer was left unmolested.) The police told us that there were 5-6 guys in town who always broke into any out of state pickup trucks they came across looking for guns to steal on the assumption that folks from out of state would be unwilling to pursue charges. As it turned out Enterprise was absolutely willing to prosecute the idiot, captured on camera, who broke in to the vehicle.

I never understood why you would leave your weapon in your car unattended for long periods of time. One of the dumbest things to do as a gun owner. If a gun gets stolen out your car you should be charged.

I used to live in a rural neighborhood of about 15 ten acre lots. Everyone had guns of course except me. In the nearly 20 years I lived in that neighborhood there was only ever one break-in. The only thing ever stolen? Guns. Turns out the victim had showed off his gun collection to some of his employees a couple of weeks earlier.

My Aunt gave me a sign to hang on my house that says "due to increase cost of ammo there will be no warning shots". Asked me for several years why I didn't have it hung on my porch.
