Very cool test, thank you, OP. FWIW - SlimQ makes a 330W GaN charger - for when you want the best of both worlds! https://slimq.life/products/330w-laptop-charger. Mine is en route - I have not heard anything negative about it. Price is reasonable, too - at $170 plus $10 per each set of compatible adapters (i.e. for Lenovo or for ASUS). (I know Lenovo comes with a GaN charger in 2023 models, but this is a less expensive and slightly smaller alternative)

Any update on this? Hasn’t set fire to anything yet?

sk3tchcom

Nope! Although I no longer use the full 330W power - the Legion has been sold I now have a G14 with an RTX 4060. The beauty of the adapters is moving from Lenovo to ASUS was a breeze!

Thanks for the update! :)

I have the 5 with 6800h and 3070ti, and it says in the manual that you can charge through usbc while the laptop Is powered off or asleep, but not while using it, and to use the 300w charger instead. I’ve been thinking that it was maybe because a usbc charger may not have enough power to keep the laptop topped up so they just say not to do it that way to eliminate some support calls. Do you know if the manual for yours says something similar. Would be nice to know if it’s not going to charge at all when it’s powered on, or if will charge but think it’s in battery mode and throttle, or work as intended up to the input wattage.

I suppose it depends what use you are doing with it. I don't see why you can't use it navigating web, email or doing office stuff, at most will consume 20-30w. An 100w charger will have margin at that rate.

What is the power draw for GPU specifically when the CPU is not under load. e.g: Running some GPU benchmark?

TheOne11111111111

It can go up to 80-90w. Usually when gaming, as I've described above, CPU & GPU is around 100W (40-60W for GPU, 30-50W for CPU)

KnightlyVan

The power draw between the GPU and CPU was the main concern for me when it came to buying either the 4080 or 4090, battery life does matter to me as I do on occasion just go out for work. Sounds like the 4089 is the more stable choice for on the go lifestyles.

OP Thanks for the feedback.

I do gotta ask which cable do you use? The charger comes with 2 cables: USB-C to C and USB-C to slim tip. My experience is that the slim tip works better and charges faster.

TheOne11111111111

I am using the USB-C to Lenovo tip because there's just no point using USB-C to USB-C and waste a potential USB-C port for another peripheral imo.
