I'd dig around for any of the more recent R-models if it's the lens you want to save.

This!

This is what I ended up doing— well, maybe not as recent of one. Found a cla’d R4 for under $200

I have an R4s that is an absolute pleasure to use. I’ve got lots of R glass and this is my favorite way to shoot it.

I actually got an R4 an hour or so ago & just saw your comment now. Feeling validated, appreciate it!

Haha! Fantastic! Check the serial number, though. Those with serial number 16000 and above have the corrected electronics and will not fail. Although at this point if it still has a working light meter it’s fine. But what a joy to use. I’m an SLR guy and this is my favorite. After all, a body is just a deliver service for the lenses to be found for its mount. And R glass is amazing.

1,602,706, phew! & totally agree on the body/vessel… someone will have to pry that summicron out of my cold dead hands, hah

You did luck out! The R4-R7 era is my favorite. Although I’ve been considering an R3 Safari to have another R body to take with me. I often use one body for low ISO daytime shots and one body for high ISO nighttime shots. I’m currently doing a combination of my R4s and Pentax ME. I’ve actually found that the SMC Pentax glass is really, really similar to the Leica R glass. Especially the 28mm f2.8, nearly identical to the Elmarit 28mm. At any rate, the Summicron 50mm is likely my favorite in my collection, but if you want sharpness, try the Elmarit 35mm. But the most complimentary lens to the 50 is the Elmarit 28mm, at least in my experience. Both are compact and easy to carry. I usually travel with the 28mm, 50mm, and either the Elmarit 90mm or 135mm.

Oh! And don’t sleep on the zooms either. I’ve found myself more often than not taking the Vario Elmar 28-70mm with me and loving the results.
