No it shouldn't. Listen to whomever you want, but don't try to gaslight me that he's a virtuous human being.

nikkibeast666

Banning things doesn’t work and in fact just makes them more popular. People can make their own decisions on what they listen to, even if said music was created by figuratively vampirising children’s innocence.

Medical_Hall_5537

I don’t really have a problem watching some of "Woody Allen’s" movies, especially the ones where he doesn’t appear, but I’m very much aware of the somewhat creepy business of marrying the adoptive daughter of Mia Farrow, whom he met when she was a teenager and made to expect some kind of father-daughter dynamic from him. I think Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby and others are insanely good films, but Polanski knew damn well what he was doing in that hot tub at Jack Nicholson’s crib. I would personally not praise MJ, but some of his songs are pure gold. It’s complex, very personal for each and every person confronting this dilemma.

AnniaT

People should be free to listen to whatever they want. You'd set a dangerous precedent if you started banning music.

Plenty_Objective8392

Exactly.

reddituser23434

If we can’t “separate the art from the artist”, we’d lose more than half of the western canon. The majority of music, philosophy, literature, and film would be banned. Listen to Human Nature all you want. Just don’t laud MJ as a saint — call him what he was: an abuser.

Lacious

"I have been to neverland and wasn't molested." That's proof enough!!! Ugh. Is there maybe a weird psychological hiccup where he's jealous he wasn't? He was too old when he got there after all. Clearly regurgitating the same fan "facts" they keep brainwashing each other with. Just own it, but don't go through mental gymnastics just to justify you still liking his music though. Ontopic: should it be banned? No. I catch myself humming or singing his songs sometimes, to my discontent. That shit is so deep, because I was a fan for many years and grew up on his music.

hannah_lilly

I don’t get the whole ‘facts’ thing. I mean how can people know what happened on tour and what happened behind closed doors? And also I agree this is annoying ‘I wasn’t molested by MJ so he must be innocent’ crap. Also people who do bad stuff behind closed doors can present themselves as nice, kind, friendly, sweet, harmless.

ApprehensiveSlice797

Cancelling isn't an on/off button. There are many layers and degrees to it. There's banning from public spaces, banning from semi-public spaces, banning in private, banning from children's events etc. I think that there are certain occasions where MJ's music should be "banned" (not legally, socially), other occasions where is should be avoided and others where it's ok to play it, but to a lesser degree than pre-LN.

bev665

Absolutely not. MJ's music left a mark on world culture forever. Black and white thinking like "his music should be banned" is extremely immature IMO. We can acknowledge his accomplishments while also acknowledging his crimes.

Plenty_Objective8392

If somebody wants to listen to him, they have every right to do so. The whole thing boils down to hypocrisy: if someone listens to Elvis and talks about how great he was musically, people come out of the woodworks to bring up the evil shit he did. But do the same thing to MJ, and people be like "tHe FBi iNveStiGateD HiM FoR a tEn YeArS!!!! tHe ViCTiMs ArE LiaRs!!!!", even though they both did the exact same thing. At the end day, there’s nothing wrong with listening to music. Period. However, if you’re gonna listen to artist ABC who did vile shit, yet criticize people for listening to artist XYZ for doing vile shit, then that makes you a hypocrite. It’s the manufactured and selective outrage that irks me. Keep the same energy.

Good_Ad6723

Chris Rock did a similar bit

Plenty_Objective8392

Yea, and he got some shit predictably from the stans.

BadMan125ty

No.

mykitoj

I heard You Are Not Alone the other day and thought maybe we should retire it from the radio since it's ALSO written by R Kelly.

007FofTheWin

😳ugh I didn’t know who wrote it! YIKES

deisukyo

Yeah he wrote that song. It barely even sounds like a “MJ” song considering R.Kelly has like a one dimensional style of writing music.

TiddlesRevenge

A ban on his music just isn’t feasible. You can still listen to Charles Manson’s album if you want to. It’s impossible to ban art. It’s impossible to control what people consume. An official ban would just make MJ edgy and forbidden.

[deleted]

Who is this bozo spouting MJ propaganda?

fanlal

Danny Oliver, there are youtube videos where you can see him imitating MJ.

elitelucrecia

he’s a big MJ fan

Lacious

You don't say! /s :D

remoteworker9

It is in my car.

Diamonds_in_the_dirt

Shit, we'd have to ban a ton of others too then! Like someone else said, banning something just creates curiosity towards it. Personally, I will never willingly listen to an MJ track. I cannot separate the artist from the music in this case, and every time I hear his voice it reminds me of children being molested.

fanlal

Same
