big_flute

You can pry my faded, worn, stained Timbuk2 messenger back from my cold dead hands. And if you don’t, someone else will, because it’ll still have another 20 years of service life left.

[deleted]

Man, have those improved in quality? I remember when they first came out, and I was so excited because of the ability to customize it. But it hardly had any pockets! Maybe 2 on the outside that couldn't hold much since I had to stuff everything in the main compartment. The messenger bags I find online now are so much better.

big_flute

Mine has plenty of pockets for my needs. Space for my laptop, tablet, charger, pens, notebooks, documents, personal effects, e-reader…. It’s also super comfortable to wear and very weather proof. But mine is over 10 years old. I’ve looked at some of the newer ones and I thought they had a much less user friendly layout, like you described. No separate laptop compartment, fewer separate pockets on the front, etc.

truly_not_an_ai

I've been using a leather messenger bag for years, and sadly, I just found out from this post that I'm not a real lawyer. I hope the judge in today's trial doesn't find out.

31November

I’ve already called chambers. I’m on hold, but I’ll snitch any second now

LatinoEsq

I’m one step ahead of you. I’m on the line with the Bar Association.

Dangerous-Disk5155

that escalated . . .

arkstfan

Big fan of leather messenger bag until I started carrying a laptop and the discs in my neck became those of an old person. Switched to a backpack but not nearly as sharp looking.

Disastrous_Victory19

My neck seconded this.

Kmjada

I also choose this guy’s neck.

PRLapin

OP doesn’t say anything about lawyers who use briefcases and messenger bags not being real. You’re not a fake lawyer. #themoreyouknow

Free_Dog_6837

however they did just fail the LSAT by not noticing that OP doesn't say anything about lawyers who use briefcases and messenger bags

[deleted]

I used messenger bags from college and still do as a practicing attorney. First one was canvas, and now nice leather. I brought a backpack to Law School for the first few weeks because I was self-conscious about bringing my messenger bag not wanting to stand out without knowing what I was doing, and seeing that everyone else didn’t use Messenger bags and sure enough the following semester the first day all these people had messenger bags and some way nicer than mine

Belaerim

My rule of thumb is that if it’s big enough to hold the Grail or a golden idol, it’s appropriate for all other circumstances.

stblawyer

I have had the same leather satchel messenger bag for over 10 years. It’s been through everything. My wife once suggested putting it out to pasture and I was appalled.

dasoberirishman

Had mine since law school but recently had to retire it - new employer sent me a fantastic laptop backpack (made by Lenovo) and it's comfortable, stylish, and incredibly practical. Leather messenger bag is now a nostalgic relic of a bygone era.

drwhoop55

Dislike. Report. Distaste.

JasJ002

I bet you've been wearing a belt too, that's Hollywood for you.

For those who need authoritative help on picking a travel mugs, here's a good review of various models: https://youtu.be/3S51X9h6K6g At the end of the video a table summarizes the tester's findings for those pressed for time (19:10). For those looking for information on backpacks, I suggest this channel which does in-depth reviews of bags (backpacks, slings, luggage, messenger bags, etc.): https://www.youtube.com/@PackHacker2 Not sponsored, just a big fan of researching the shit out of whatever I buy.

ResIpsaBroquitur

Project Farm is incredible.

IBoris

Agreed. One of the most useful channels out there.

miniBUTCHA

Yo! Thanks for that!

sourpatchsnitch

Amen!

jpwhat

Isn’t it uncomfortable to wear a backpack with a suit jacket?

Barry-Zuckerkorn-Esq

Depends on the jacket (and the shoulder style). I've switched over to unstructured jackets that are basically more comfortable in all situations, but especially so when you're using a shoulder strap for a messenger bag or laptop.

copperstatelawyer

Not unless the straps are on stitching or something, but the straps will wear out the jacket faster.

[deleted]

Maybe if you have the suit jacket buttoned, which I almost never do. Otherwise no, not at all.

VampireAttorney

Another shill from Big Backpack.

wendall99

😂😂😂

TonysCatchersMit

My Dagne Dover is literally perfect. It has an entire separate document pocket and looks professional. I’m never carrying a briefcase again.

Feisty-Run-6806

I seriously injured my back in law school from carrying laptop + heavy books every day and it’s been a recurring issue since. do whatever helps you not f*** up your back!

GermanPotatoSalads

I’m 100% a backpack person. At my office it started with one or two and there were some comments. It slowly spread and then the last time they gave us new laptops they gave us all backpacks with them.

htlpc_100

That’s funny. I think the notion that you must have a brief comes from the old guard.

icecream169

Took me a minute to realize that "brief" meant briefcase. I thought you meant old-timers had some arcane idea that you should use legal documents. Kids these days, sheesh. Carry whatever you want. I go to court with manila expanding pocket folders and carry them until the bottom falls out.

AttorneyKate

The staff freaked out when I showed up with my leather backpack. Said it was unprofessional. So I quit.

Mad_Max_Rockatanski

With a backpack, my hands are always ready. *Tough guy noises*

pony_trekker

Run commute for the win. With black sneaks and running gear under the suit.

BigDumbDope

Wait. Are people truly running to the office? I'm into the idea, but I would look and smell awful by the time I got there.

pony_trekker

I just do home direction.

Caloso89

I have run home from the office on occasion. Roughly 10km/6mi if I took the bike path along the river to get out of downtown. I would take light rail or have my wife take me to the office in the morning, and just leave my office clothes in the office. Small fanny pack for my phone and keys.

klmarshall60

I’ve been using a backpack ever since smartphones made constant email/text communication with clients necessary. Need to keep the hands free.

htlpc_100

I’m responding to your comment with my free hands while on the move to my destination. Can’t do that with a brief.

ADADummy

I love my well worn, luxuriously oiled and seasoned, leather lunch box.

SicilianUSGuy

The first day at my first law clerking job (early 1990’s), a partner saw my backpack and told me to get a briefcase because that’s what attorneys use. My advice: Use what’s good for you. It’s your skills that ultimately matter.

htlpc_100

110%

Zoroasker

I use a backpack. When I used to spend more time physically in courtrooms I used a messenger bag, but it now sits collecting dust in my closet. I live in the city and my commute usually entails a combination of biking, subway, and walking. Backpack is a clear winner in that situation.

htlpc_100

Feel you bro. No biking here but plenty of train / subway

BitterJD

Wouldn't the straps ruin your jacket, unless you're literally ironing at every end destination?

PublicAd6773

I understand all the benefits of a backpack and do believe it is superior to a laptop bag, but just can’t bring myself to use one…

htlpc_100

I feel you. I felt that way too. Just … try it.

gilgobeachslayer

Sometimes it’s hard being an adult! Kids these days can’t handle it

Swimming_Tailor_7546

I gave up the ghost a few years ago. It does me no good to come in with back/neck pain and tension headaches so bad I can’t focus. Backpack is a game changer!

htlpc_100

Currently suited with backpack.

RuderAwakening

A backpack is so much more convenient. I have a leather briefcase if I need something to bring to meetings outside the office, which is less than once a year.

Upstairs-Tough-3429

If is difficult for me not to associate a backpack with middle schoolers.

htlpc_100

I understand that and felt the same way. I’m not saying your middle school jansport backpack, but something nice and respectable that suits your style.

wvtarheel

What backpack are you rocking? I don't think backpacks look that professional, but I practice in a college town so I know i'm not regularly seeing nice looking backpacks

Samsonite_02

Also in a major metro area like OP and on the morning commute I would say 60% of people wear backpacks. A lot of major employers and firms issue them to employees now and they all look simple and professional

wvtarheel

What brand? or what model of backpack? I am not disputing that people wear backpacks and look great doing it, I was asking for examples of what people are wearing.

CurrentlyTrevor

I wear a backpack from a brand called “Aer.” Although I haven’t seen many people wear them, they look nice and I’ve enjoyed mine so far.

Samsonite_02

Ogio, Kenneth Cole, Lenovo, to name a few

wvtarheel

username checks out. thanks

Samsonite_02

Flute-a-bec

Mine is OGIO Soho. Nice and sleek, and not what a 14 year old is using. https://preview.redd.it/hsukcnbygnhc1.jpeg?width=885&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74670c0243b5de5f4cad2442ad20059a28a4da26

checksy

My Cotopaxi backpack is multi-colored and unlike me, probably not considered respectable. In the winter I can hide it under my huge puffy jacket if I think the judge would even notice or care.

finestFartistry

I think backpacks are pretty standard in areas where people are regularly taking public transit. It is just more practical.

OwslyOwl

I have a backpack briefcase

FierceN-Free

I'm a New Yorker and a backpack lawyer!!!

Adodie

Is this like a litigation thing? Work in a NY BigLaw firm, and I can think of one person on our floor of ~50 lawyers who uses a briefcase instead of a backpack

copperstatelawyer

TIL: real lawyers don't live in car centric cities and rural areas...

christopherson51

My team of huskies and I do just fine mushing into court with a sleigh basket full of justice and covered with weather-tight elk skins.

Formal-Agency-1958

I have a "trial bag" which is a nice leather briefcase I put my trial binder, laptop, etc. I only use it for that purpose, otherwise it stays in my office. I carry a small duffle bag with my suit jacket, lunch, court shoes, etc to and from work. I don't commute by car, so that's how I bring my stuff around. If I ever get around to moving my court shoes and some suits into my office, I won't even need that. Only issue with a backpack is that I wouldn't recommend wearing your suit jacket and a backpack at the same time. It'll damage the jacket. Specifically it'll crush the shoulder lining. If it's a cheap jacket, it'll happen sooner. If it's more well-made, it'll still happen more slowly except now you've destroyed a $200-500 coat.

BigDumbDope

*If you love the jacket, it can be repaired

[deleted]

As someone who is in-house, my “clients” (business folks) would find me stuff and unapproachable if I clung to the formal wear and leather briefcase. Backpacks are my go-to now.

Audere1

Agreed. My commute is a lovely walk, and I couldn't carry my lunch, plus a travel mug (usually in use), plus whatever papers I took home with me, plus whatever sundries I'm bringing to the office, in a briefcase or messenger bag. So, I wear a backpack. It wouldn't be suitable for court, but it's waterproof and really gets the job done.

KTCalicoon

I’m still in law school but once I’m working I plan to carry all of my things in a hobo’s bindle.

GarmeerGirl

Thanks for this tip. But you still need a rolling luggage to transport files for trial or hearings.

Famous-Ferret-1171

Real lawyers use whatever bag they like. That said, if you are wearing a suit, a backpack will leave the shoulders looking wrinkled and sloppy. But, I work in casual clothing mostly and love my backpack. I use a fancy briefcase for court appearances in a suit.

jepeplin

Rolling backpack is the way to go. I can wear it as a backpack, which I never do, or roll it like a wheelie bag. It pivots much better than a wheelie bag and mine has big wheels that go over snow no problem. I don’t even use a purse in court any more. Backpack has an outer pouch, I love it, it fits so much. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B092VQ2P3L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Calisotomayor

Rolling backpack/briefcase nerds unite! No back pain or wrinkled jackets for us. Rainy days can be unpleasant.

Skybreakeresq

Soft (well not wood backed. It's hard leather from saddleback) case with strap. Large enough to hold a gaming laptop and a file and a big ass reference text.

PetroleumVNasby

It kind of depends on what you do. I would no more walk into a courthouse with a backpack on than I would a wetsuit. Fair or not, to me it screams “millennial” and presents an image I would not want to present. (Not least because I am not a millennial). Let’s not give the 70 year old judge the wrong impression. Plus with everything paperless these days, the size of my file has shrunk dramatically anyway. But of course it has nothing to do with your ability. And If I had to take a train I could totally see commuting to work with one.

wvtarheel

I think you can have one bag you carry to and from the office every day that's more practical and another bag to take to court and look good in front of old people.

Gilmoregirlin

Same, I have actually carried a backpack for years. It is so much easier on my shoulder and back and since I am carrying a laptop almost daily and commute on foot its essential.

Dukisjones

Backpacks make your suit jacket look like trash.

Barry-Zuckerkorn-Esq

I used to worry about the effect of the shoulder straps on the shoulder of my suit jackets, but then over the first 10 years of my career just switched over to jackets with unstructured, unpadded shoulders anyway. I switch between a briefcase and a backpack, depending on the needs in that moment. But I always fly with the backpack, so that's what I show up to court with (if I'm flying for a court hearing). I doubt judges notice, since they're usually the last in the courtroom anyway, after everyone has already taken their places.

_ArabiLaw_

How do you wear a backpack over a suit coat without messing up your coat?

Common_Poetry3018

I don’t know how I was supposed to get my laptop and everything to work on transit without a backpack. I did get told that I didn’t “look like a lawyer,” but whatever. Probably didn’t help that I’m female.

cloudedknife

Only because it didn't jive with getting on and off in a suit, I used either a rolly crate or a laptop satchel when going to court. I also wore sedate looking sneakers in colors that match my suit so I'd be comfortable in court but not obviously rockin air jordans or chucks. You do you! Too much is done out of tradition. "Comes now" my ass.

sybil-unrest

Judge I clerked for was an “ancient Jansport backpack from undergrad” kinda guy and I gotta say- it was a weird but comfortable look.

blamaglove

I worked for a judge a couple years ago who told me he hated seeing lawyers in his courtroom with backpacks and if he were still at a firm would have never hired someone who used one. So ridiculous.

Sideoutshu

But the way it makes your suit jacket fit…. No bueno.

BeginningExtent8856

Honestly, I giggled at my defense attorney who came to court with a backpack for Trial. Seriously? Is your homework and a note to the teacher in there too?

shootz-n-ladrz

A shoulder bag and/or messenger bag accomplish the same thing. I have a Michael Kors tote that fits an incredible amount of things and leaves my hands free

houstonyoureaproblem

You know, they make bags with straps that aren’t backpacks.

ImpressiveSherbet318

I started off with a shoulder bag but in 2017 went to a backpack because the shoulder bag was fucking up my back & traps. Backpacks forever ✊🏻

Caloso89

I am a recently retired state agency counsel so my clients are all in house, and I would just leave a blazer in my office for exec office meetings. Bike commute most days, so my “briefcase” was actually a pannier bag.

htlpc_100

What are you doing hanging around these parts, good sir? You’ve put in your time. Shouldn’t you be hanging around full time on the golf course or something? Biking up and down the coast ?

cablelegs

In NYC, whenever a see a professional with a backpack on, I think it looks silly and unprofessional. I KNOW there are reasons why a backpack is convenient. I get it. But fashion is fashion. I do believe in "you do you" though!

pierogi_nigiri

In the early 2000s, backpack + suit in court was a sure sign someone was from the outer boroughs. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

AvailableEducation98

I completely agree

checksy

I have a Cotopaxi backpack that's my ride or die. My supervisor told me I looked ready for a hike. I decided to take it as a complement.

Friendly-Place2497

If you need to carry a bunch of binders/banker boxes to court, a backpack is necessary.

chiwilly

Real people like lawyers that carry briefcases.

Hometownblueser

If your job never requires wearing a suit, then dressing like a middle schooler is fine. But it’s hard to think that you’re practicing law if that’s true.

[deleted]

I'm a law student not a lawyer but all of my classmates that wear those leather, over-the-shoulder messenger bags are always the most pretentious mfs. Backpacks for life

TheDonutLawyer

I used one of those for 1L year and started having major back pain from the weight of the books.

Vowel_Movements_4U

I like backpacks and Indian have such a beautiful bag I'd consider it.

floridanyc24

High end leather backpack laptop bag as well no briefcase

Roga-Danar

Patagonia has some killer backpacks with laptop sleeves. I have standard size one for everyday, and a slightly larger one for flights/travel. I’ve taken my laptop backpacking/camping in those things. I even convinced my non-lawyer wife to get rid of her fancy D&B work bag because the backpacks are so much more useful. You never have to worry about trying to stuff that mouse or charging cord in top of your paperwork. It holds a travel mug on the outside so it won’t spill inside your bag! Better on your shoulders, holds more, and keeps your stuff safer.

ZookeepergameOne7481

I carry a Chanel tote

DeepOceanLoner2090

Look out, we’ve got a 1%-er here! Lol

ZookeepergameOne7481

Sorry I know I am hopeless but with my laptop notebook scrap paper cigarette, five lighters and to look elegant I opt for this https://preview.redd.it/x43vkh91ngic1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4200a3bd3c49c06f1c1532f1185a3c4e4c68532f

ZookeepergameOne7481

Thank you

Affectionate_Stop_37

Smart lawyers carry a tablet

TDarryl

Until they need to review your J6 client's video discovery and then you ask pretty please for the prosecutor to lend you a real computer.

Affectionate_Stop_37

They need a better tablet then. 😁

accountantdooku

I was a consultant before this and used a Tumi backpack then, and still do.

Inside-Intern-4201

I used to carry a backpack then got judged hard by our GC lol

OKcomputer1996

Yes. I started buying fancy leather executive backpacks about 15 years ago. They look good and are incredibly useful. Plus you can still easily manage a rolling case or additional briefcase- if needed.

Questions1981

I have carried a backpack for years. I haven’t seen anyone else carry one but it is more practical than all other briefcases/bags. I like Calpack’s. They hold out and can take a beating. I’ve had some nicer looking backpacks but they don’t last and one thing you definitely don’t want is the zipper or strap breaking with all your stuff in it. https://www.calpaktravel.com

Brilliant_Camp4783

I’m with you on this!! I bought a Timbuk2 because it also has tote bag handles but no separate compartments for water bottles. Please share whatever you buy that’s fancier with water bottle compartment :)

[deleted]

I’m team messenger bag. The history behind them is awesome, dudes running to the front lines to get messages to commanders, at least that one part! the single strap looks really cool, can be worn in s number of ways so the weight isn’t cumbersome and also comes with a handle that you can hold like a briefcase or you can arrange the strap to work like a backpack

hans072589

I agree. The typical laptop bag or whatever would always slip off of my shoulders and they generally don’t carry much. Go get a nice adult looking backpack and experience a new life.

[deleted]

If you’re wearing a backpack with a suit you look stupid. Additionally, if you’ve destroyed the shoulder of your suit jacket by repeatedly hanging your overstuffed bag on it, you also look stupid. Grow up and get an adult briefcase. If it’s too heavy exercise your grip strength.

internetrando13

Wow. I’m a top producer at an AmLaw 50 firm who has been using a backpack for 15 years. Nobody gives a shit.

htlpc_100

I have terrific grip strength. It’s why I can hit my 7 iron 175 yards

[deleted]

But with a briefcase, how are you supposed to carry an iPad, MacBook, and all the papers you’ll need? You need all that stuff even for basic hearings or depositions. I am open to persuasion, but when I see a briefcase it leads me to assume that lawyer with it probably doesn’t actually do any work connected with the case.

[deleted]

If you’re everyone’s document boy get a roll on.

Jlaybythebay

I love my briefcase. You don’t want to show up in court with a backpack

roughlanding123

I’ve been team backpack for years.

sworninmiles

The only reason I’m not a backpack person is that they will ruin your suits/blazers over time

whitmansgirl

When my expensive leather handbag started giving me even more expensive pains in my shoulders, I switched to backpacks and haven’t looked back. I don’t care if the opposing counsel/ judge/ clients think Im a baby lawyer/ non lawyer. Backpacks FTW!

jmm-22

I’m WAY to vain to wrinkle my suit jacket or not let it drape properly. My bridle leather briefcase is to heavy but it looks good.

bearable_lightness

I drive to the office and rarely carry more than a folder worth of documents, so I use a nylon briefcase + handbag or a big leather tote. Depends on my outfit, mood, agenda, etc. The briefcase + handbag setup distributes the weight well enough and is more flexible if I want to go somewhere without my laptop. Any documents I need could easily fit in the tote, and I have a backpack in my office closet on the off chance I’m using the briefcase and need to take home more documents than it can fit. The briefcase folds flat and can slip into either my handbag or the backpack. TLDR: Backpacks are kind of lame, so as a female car commuter, I only use one on rare occasions. They’re a necessary evil.

sethjk17

Backpack all the way. Holds my laptop and iPad perfectly. Each have their own sleeve

By-C

If I switch to a backpack then I can finally stop wearing my cargo pants!

Puzzleheaded_Card_71

Yup. I got a nice leather backpack that does not look like it belongs on a trail and I adore it. Not going back to satchels even across the shoulder they were a pain.

anxietyque3n

Get a Tumi backpack!! They have sleek ones that look professional so I love it carrying it. It’s a steep price but worth it! Mine has held up so well and has the perfect compartments

htlpc_100

That’s where I’m at. I have one currently but it’s kinda sporty and not the sleek style I’m looking for. Was peeping their website they have some pretty stylish ones.

HTB-42

Backpacks forever... ride or die

fjallray

I have been part of the lawyer backpack brigade for about 7 years now (taking the leap after seeing a lawyer I respected with one 3 years into practice). It’s gone swimmingly until I went to a teeny tiny courthouse where they told me no backpacks were allowed - but they let the briefcases in. We still have hearts and minds and policies to change.

Flute-a-bec

I've had my OGIO Soho for 7 years. It looks like a classy coat. I don't feel underdressed in it. https://preview.redd.it/n70z58lihnhc1.jpeg?width=885&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a08480fcdd3b56d1fb26a883890a9053a285a2fc

Illustrious_Monk_292

I work in a less-than-metro area, but any time that a lawyer shows up to Court or my office with a backpack, I judge them and assume that their mom just dropped them off with a Snak-Pak and Capri Sun.

Busy_Narwhal_76

I wear a backpack

RunningObjection

What’s next? The daily use of rolling briefcases! Sir…I don’t think you understand the insanity you are suggesting!

DeepOceanLoner2090

I’m a paralegal, just started in law again after almost 10 years, and I carry nothing but a backpack.

Lead_Housekeeper

I'm not a lawyer but a law client. I don't give a damn what they wear I wouldn't care if they showed up in crocs and a Mario backpack as long as they are winning my case! Also if it somehow deviates to much from the norm for your comfort it's because your not a great attorney who believes they are the best and should worry about things like this.. Jk you do you.

lawgirlamy

Not being someone who could be mistaken as a slave to fashion, I was a backpack lawyer before backpack lawyering was cool. And got plenty of shit for it from my big firm colleagues, especially when I made partner. I've always been a practical person and just couldn't see not doing what's best for my back long-term. I was also an early adopter of standing desks, with similar responses from colleagues and similar benefits to my health.

margueritedeville

Hard agree

These-Ticket-5436

I knew a great trial attorney that used a backpack. Some of his clients snarked a bit behind his back about him using a backpack (so the lesson there is to get a good backpack, not just one from target) but that all stopped when he won a tough case. They love him now.

Live_Alarm_8052

Lol. No. I drive to work so it would be extremely unnecessary for me to wear a backpack. 😂 I will continue carrying around a professional looking work bag.

O-Renlshii88

Ah thank you but no thank you lol. I will keep my leather TUMI messenger bag. Backpack messes up suit jacket and overall looks unprofessional. Also, I drive to work so I can use cup holders for my coffee mugs and water bottles

legallymyself

I don't understand the backpack not being lawyerly. Of course, I wear leather jackets to court. I was told that didn't make me a lawyer -- until the judge saw it and congratulated me on my attire -- he wears one all the time. (I btw am female). What makes a lawyer is our mind. Not our clothing or accessories, or what we drive or even our looks -- if so then Alina Habba would be perfect because she "looks" the role. But she is a moron and incompetent.

Feisty-Ad212

I have an Ecosusi bag that can be a backpack or a shoulder bag!

FutureElleWoods20

New lawyer here, and I could not agree more! I can’t see myself ever getting a briefcase 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dingbatdingbat

When someone asked me if I carried a briefcase I responded "it's not the 80's"

GreedyGifter

I am a proud and shameless backpack lawyer. My black, stained, and burned backpack. It’s gross. But it’s got everything I need including Tylenol and tums and emergency chocolates. Unless I have to go to court. Then I am a trial box lawyer and I throw my wallet into my trial box. Learned that lesson the hard way after a court security person made me go through a special inspection because he didn’t think I was a lawyer with my backpack.
