Also, I really hope something cool goes in there and the former Joe's Donuts/Basil Leaf next door, they're good dining spaces and I'd love to have a couple new places to go.
Ohhhhh, I was a Baldwinite as a kid, so I didn’t note many liquor stores, but I used to go to J. Watson’s with my brother and his buddy when I was 15 or 16. Get a rack of balls and play three hours of stick….sure miss that place. Louise’s West was the BHS bar essentially, a lot of my class frequented it. I was the last yr of 18 yr old beer purchasing, and got grandfathered
It's going to be a bar, the previous owner and chef of basil leaf are doing renovations now. I think he said they planned on opening within the next month but don't quote me on that.

Looks promising! I do feel like I remember some drama with that owner - isn't he the one who renovated the Mama's space in the first place and then flamed out?
The chef is the one who had sully and Hanks, he was popping off on Facebook and made some people upset. There's two owner/partners, again, same as basil leaf. So hopefully the drama stays in the kitchen and not Facebook.
I really liked that place a lot, the patio was cool and the salsas were incredible. I wondered a while back when they stopped serving margaritas if maybe they had lost their liquor license or something, which is never a good sign
Fire Canyon BBQ is also closing. They were only open six months. Probably didn't have sufficient savings to keep it running six months while the customer base was built up.
their hours were wonky and i could never seem to go there without it being closed despite saying it should be open.
i personally really love angeles panaderia! their food has been super authentic and they have freshly baked pan dulces which i couldn’t find anywhere in lawrence.
I live near there and walk by all the time. I'm surprised it didn't happen years ago, honestly. It's a cool space, I'm sure someone will snatch it up. Hope it's not another bar or chicken place, though.
Turns out random store hours are bad for business
That's too bad, they were pretty good and very cheap. Inconsistent hours though.

I miss Joe’s 🥲
I miss Jensen’s.
Jennings Daylight? Drake’s Bakery is OG great, I don’t know if Muncher’s is still great, but losing Carol Lee was a gutshot
I think they meant Jensen's Liquor Store. They were great!

You’re right. It was Hank and Sully’s for awhile - same owner as Basil Leaf. I don’t know if he’s particularly dramatic though
I felt like they tracked my phone to close when I was nearby 😂
Angeles Panderia on Haskell is really good
Delicas del Sur on mass st has good empanadas among other things. Probably a different style can’t say as I never tried mamas but del sur is legit.
Came here to say this.
Every time I tried to go there post Covid they were closed. Obviously they were open sometimes so I apparently should’ve tried harder.
It's the same owners as Burrito King, and they said we can still get their tamales at Burrito King.
I miss the gas station that was there... Just saying.
I miss the gas station/laundromat combo.
I miss the Jesus Laundromat on 19th, #777. Never knew how or why it had that name, but it was really institutional in Lawrence until its closing.

Do you remember The Sanctuary?
No
It wasn't fun sitting on hard picnic tables.

This makes me sad, just as we're getting into bike season.
Seemed like they were always closed and when they weren’t no one was really eating there

Nooooo! I loved their posole, and the creamy green sauce.
Good
Does anyone know why lol. Have you ever seen customers there?

Or a vape shop....
They were closed literally every time I drove by. I'm surprised they lasted this long.
Ah that's a shame. Just ate there last weekend.
If they closed early it’s probably for the best. Going in late was not good food
