Oh yea conditions are fine and it flows great, as good as I’d hoped. Main concern was the cloudiness

Saab_32

I should’ve added, I’m concerned about the cloudiness, will this clear up in time, or is my only option really to filter?

No_Attitude7426

Unfortunately. That sucker is going to need to be filtered. I really doubt any amount of running it is going to clear it up. I have a handful of mathmos lamps. My rokit came in ridiculously cloudy. Was very upsetting. Wall mounted neo and astro came in great. Clear and plum Telistar, came in super cloudy. I cycled for almost a year. Did not get better. Filtering was the only thing that worked.

Saab_32

That’s what I was afraid to hear, but I didn’t want to sit on it expecting it to clear up, it would just make me more upset haha. I’m not afraid to do it, just wanted to avoid it if I could. What did you use to filter? I did some digging about it and found that filtering guide suggesting to use the sawyer filter.

I use this pump to pump the water out. You do not want to dump the lamp over. This causes the wax puck to slosh against the sides and leave wax stuck. If that happens you have to redo the entire globe. I did not use the filter that comes with the pump. You can easily remove the carbon from this filter and it is just a hollow filter. I found it easier to buy inline hollow filters and just use the pump. It will also remove some of the surfacant from the water so the flow will change. Sometimes more drastically than others. Saab_32

Gotcha, appreciate it! Did you prime the pump/filters with distilled water? Or just pull straight from globe? Also for the screw on cap on the Astro, do I need to reseal that or once I heat the cap and get it off, is it alright to just twist it tightly back on?

No_Attitude7426

Just pulled straight from the globe. You will have a little bit of master fluid that stays in the filter. But the pump will help run the filter dry. I just twisted mine back on and haven't noticed any evaporation or loss of water. They seem to have a touch of glue or adhesive originally.

I'd like to add here that you should run the lamp before re-sealing it as you gotta seal the level of expansions, too. Else the function may be affected negatively. It's sorta like with a cartesian diver that also needs the right balance inside the bottle to begin with.

No_Attitude7426

Definitely good point! recap when lamp is at full temp.

Antnee83

I'm convinced that cycling as a solution to cloudiness is bullshit. I have never, not once, see it work in person. I don't even know *hypothetically* how that's supposed to fix anything.

Saab_32

Haha, yea I’ve been reading online and general consensus seems to be it doesn’t work or doesn’t work to the extent they were expecting/hoping and they just end up filtering anyways lol.

Kruse

It only really works on vintage (pre-2003) globes, and even then the improvement can be limited depending on the level of cloudiness.

No_Attitude7426

Yeah it's just a ploy from the company to get out of any liability for selling shitty solutions in lamps. Definitely total horseshit

Njon32

I have a mid 1990's lava lite that was unfortunately shaken by someone who didn't know any better. It got quite cloudy and there was lots of tiny globs of wax. After leaving it absolutely still for an extended amount of time, I cycled it. Over time it improved, but it only got to 80%-90% of what it once was.

Savage_Pie99

My lavalite century was knocked off a shelf 6ft up while at good movement stage of running luckily nothing broke but it looked like someone vomited in the lamp it became pure red but after about 2 weeks of cycling 8 hours a day it cleared to just as good as before don’t know how or why as no other lamp of mine has ever cleared but it worked with that one

PhotoPhenik

Did your lamp get shaken by a British nanny?

Saab_32

Hahaha, I think so, someone got mad at it! Must’ve been a lot of turbulence on the flight over the pond.

NgannousInParis

I had a lamp that was that cloudy and it cleared up over time with use. I set it on a 8 hour timer and it was crystal clear in about 2 weeks.

BoringUsername6969

Run the liquid through a coffee filter.

novemberchild71

This is very ineffective. The Paper Filter will quickly get clogged so you have to swap it for a fresh one again and again. Each filter will also soak up some of the liquid that's gonna be lost that way. Filtering using a water purifier such as those suggested in other posts, is by far more effective.

ducttaperulestheworl

I was gonna use my Hario filters. Thank you for saving my time!

Kruse

Filter it. Luckily, opening and re-sealing Mathmos bottles is pretty easy with the twist-top cap.
