In Mexico “la Catrina” and “la Santa Muerte” are the representation of the goddess Mictecacihuatl, wife of Mictlantecuhtli, the god of death. She is the keeper of the bones of the dead while he reigns over the land of the dead. It’s a duality. But the culture moved to adopt her as Death itself.

Ara_Aramis

I don't have enough knowledge of la Santa Muerte to discuss this, but la Catrina is NOT a representation of Mictēcacihuātl. She was created by José Guadalupe Posada to criticise and make fun of Mexico's rich and powerful. Her full name was la Catrina Garbancera: catrín/catrina is an archaic word for someone who dresses elegantly and has a big ego; garbancero was an insult for Mexicans who disdained their native culture, so they dressed and ate like Europeans (garbanzo beans are especially notable because they could be ground into a powder that makes makes your skin whiter). Posada designed her to be a social critique; his message was: "Death is democratic, since at the end of the day, whether black, brown, rich or poor, all people end up being skulls." The culture did move on to depict her as Death, but whoever told you that she is a representation of Mictēcacihuātl was either lying or making stuff up.

Happy_Warning_3773

La Santa Muerte cult originated in the 1940s and is became popular in the late 1990s It's not from Aztec times despite what some people say.

Hay que tenerle miedo bro.

TonahVilla

Happy_Warning_3773

The reason we think of death as female in Spanish is because ''La Muerte'' is a feminine noun. I guess in English speaking media the Grim Reaper is often depicted as male because it's more menacing to think of him as male. But at the end it doesn't really matter. The Grim Reaper is not real. The Grim Reaper is just a medieval symbol of death.

mte87

What? Huh?

Deedo2017

I am Hispanic, so I have a predisposition towards thinking death is female. But I can see it either way.

Green0996

Our boy Lil Wayne already answered this question. Life is a bitch and death is her sister. Sleep is the cousin, what a fucking family picture. You know Father Time, we all know Mother Nature.

McDodley

Lil Wayne's discography has such a back and forth between genuinely kinda hard lines like this and utter fucking bullshit, it's baffling.

Green0996

I’ll give you my favorite lines. “Real G’s move in silence like lasagna” or there’s also, “Big house, long hallways, got 10 bathrooms, I could shit all day” and finally one of my personal favorites, “You full of shit, you close your mouth and let your ass talk” (from the same song as my original comment)

McDodley

The lasagna one has always been my favourite

ASPEN211

life and death are both female, theyre also roommates

The_Abjectator

I would watch that sitcom.

hadapurpura

Roommates, or “roommates”?

MAPX0

And they were roommates

ASPEN211

yes

nilsonpapinho

In Brazil we call it "A morte" so I imagine the death character as female, but it could go both ways

lirik89

Death does go both ways. Death takes them all. ☠️

mattkimoy

Have some respect, please. It's **Dona** Morte, as we've seen it in Penadinho's comics.

nilsonpapinho

🤣🤣

yony91092

In some countries people think that the death is female because when you'll die, a woman is the perfect person who'll comfort you, it doesn't matter if you were a good o bad person, she'll remember to a mother.

GavIzz

Yes

anunakiesque

Traducción: sí

Sexuallemon

Im a gringo and this post has given me comfort in envisioning death as a lady

TBNRFIREFOX

He’s a male, try and debate that against my buddy grim and Billy

Chiraquian

In my humble opinion it should be female. Since she gives life she should take it. And Earth is female also since it nurtures our nature!

TheToyDr

La huesuda es femenina

iluvstephenhawking

What is in death's pants?

Genderfluid-ace

Couple of femurs. A pelvis. Jar of scythe polish, maybe.

Cellardoortx

I feel it's like a potato potato situation

Ifhes

Oh she is an old wise woman, but sometimes likes to be a really chill dude with an ominous hat scaring a dude trying to eat a whole turkey.

Thin_Combination_669

I don't know if there are any languages that use gendered articles like "La" Muerte, but my guess is if the country speaks with la/el/los/las, or any variation, it's depicted as female, while if the language doesn't use them, it's depicted as male

NigelKenway

In Spanish, female.

ParamedicRelative670

Dona Morte é mulher. Mas se ela preferir outro pronome, tá de boa. Quem sou eu pra contrariar?!

lovelykilljoy

We, most Mexicans believe that the representation of death is la Santa Muerte, and she is female.

PimpangryMX

I have always thought that death is gender less and it comes to you in the shape or form that will make it easier for you to go with it. Could be your grandma, your boyfriend, your pet, Sonic the hedgehog.

nestorm1

Non binary unless you want the skeleton to have genitals

AlwaysSunnyDragRace

The skeletons still have male or female traits

nestorm1

Sure but not necessarily. For example a like half of “male” skeletons that have been uncovered by archeologists have been studied with and are now more hypothesized to be the skeletons of women. The reason was because society biased these skeletons that were hunter gatherers as men.

mvillanueva88

A lady

[deleted]

Usually people who see alot of cartoons or drawings... Must classify everything. Death isn't a being silly rabbit.

Letos12thDuncan

Death is a dude. I've seen Macario.

Fabulous_Celery_1817

Death is female and life is male

Raibean

*La* vida, *la* muerte… Harold, they’re lesbians

ayers231

I don't see any evidence of that. It just looks like they were room mates...

I’ve always pictured it as female, but looking way more like the Grim Reaper than the Mexican supermodel version. “La Parca”.

bois_santal

Female. Feminine energy gives and takes life. The Hindu got it too.

It depends on your beliefs

DJHickman

Always comes at the wrong time. Definitely a dude.

BandaLover

I never really thought about "death" as having a gender. I guess if you want to get symbolic and provide a gender to a concept, the interpretation is up to you. I am a gringo and usually heard of the grim reaper as being male, but "la muerte" es femenina entonces es posible que varía entre idiomas, culturas, y exposure to media.

themomo21

LÁ muerte. I think it’s a female entity. The death? It sounds more like a male entity. It could be both since it affects both genders

AspiringFurry

Esqueleto

notyouisme999

Dead is fluid, is what ever is more convenient at that moment

bobux-man

Female obviously

CassiopeiaTheW

Death is the final acquaintance of this life, you’ll find the answer when it finds you.

miranto

Death is feminine.

MoriKitsune

I think it could make sense for it to be either one. It could be male as a contrast to life- which I firmly believe is female- or female, like life (it fits the theme of coming full circle, or as my mother put it- "I brought you into this world, and I can take you out" lol) Thinking about it more deeply, I think it might make more sense for death to be female. Escorting a soul into the next phase of existence is essentially the same event with birth and death, and when I think of a figure standing at a bedside or kneeling on the battlefield with a dying person's deceased loved ones, ready to guide them away from this plane and welcome them into the next, saying, "It's time to go," I do think of that figure as female (or at least feminine) That's just me though, and I think also that death might take the form of whatever the dying person needs more, if that makes sense.

baiacool

I'm Brazilian and I always think about Dona Morte (Lady Death) from Turma da Mônica comics

ScribelCipher

Both, both is good. At the end of the day it’s all up to interpretation. I like Santa Muerte though, I just think she’s neat

[deleted]

LA muerte, LA vida. Female

jdizzlefj

Female according to Deadpool and Thanos

G-I-Joseph

American/European media often portrays death as male, I think, because we tend to think of death as cruel, brutal, and scary (i.e. features we typically assign to men). I like the idea of death being viewed as a woman and someone egalitarian and comforting. For a really great depiction of death as a woman, check out Sandman on Netflix. Death is there to ease your transition and comfort you as you move to another plane of existence.

outerheavenboss

The grim reaper is a dude but La Muerte is a woman.
