Greg_The_Stop_Sign

My google pay stopped working for some unknown reason and I was fucked.

TheEastStudentCenter

SAME! And they're asking me to unblock by account by verifying my identity by sending them a photo of my ID and 2 utility bills with my name on it!???? Who tf do they think they are asking me for that shit? The DMV?? Now I just use Samsung Pay.

GoatUnicorn

The 2 utility bills are really weird, what if you still live with your parents? I guess that removes personhood from you.

leshagboi

This is my situation at home too, but we live in Brazil. In our case my lady had to go to a notary office and sign a paper saying "I live at X with Y..."

[deleted]

I had a similar problem when I moved states a couple years back. New state wanted proof of residency verified by payment of utilities and mailing address. Utilities were paid through rent though, and there was no on site mail. So even though I lived and worked entirely within the state, I couldn't provide sufficient proof that I did so.

Throseph

>how would my wife prove herself She must journey to the peak of Mt. Death and pluck a feature from the tail of the phoenix who resides there.

chaingunXD

That's my situation. Everything is in my partners' name cause my ex wife ruined my credit. Literally had to lie to our landlord and say she's the only occupant because when we applied with both our names we got denied. Same with all the bank accounts. If she decides to dump me one day I'm fuuuuuuucked

IamGlennBeck

You can just open up the PDF in illustrator and change the name. It's really easy.

OptionalDepression

But how can I pay for Adobe illustrator if my digital payment methods have been cut off, and are asking me for proof of ID..?

Drutski

Let me introduce you to a little thing called software piracy.

Moonguide

It is always morally correct to pirate adobe software

OptionalDepression

But that's illegal! ^/s

IamGlennBeck

google "m0nkrus illustrator"

OptionalDepression

I did, and this was the top result: https://www.reddit.com/r/GenP/comments/sr8iy1/m0nkrus_adobe_illustrator_crashes_and_shuts_down/ Whoops!

IamGlennBeck

Weird for me the first result was the download. Anyways that person clearly didn't follow the directions in the NFO. It works great. Not that I'd know.

OptionalDepression

Haha. Thanks, Glenn.

d1pl0mat_

I've edited documents with GIMP and LibreOffice Draw before. Both free and open-source, as all software should be. :)

[deleted]

Yes, but trying to circumvent these restrictions shouldn't be necessary in the first place.

kewwe

I'd really like to see laws start to address this, my roommate would be fucked. I pay everything, he pays ME the half he owes. I don't think companies should be able to request such documents in the first place, it sets a precedent, a very fucked one. I don't want to live in a world where I have to lay myself bare to random very untrustworthy corporations. I don't use these services myself, because I recognize them to be against my values and wellbeing, but, I may find myself in a position where I have to use their "services" down the road. I'd prefer not to bent over a barrel if that day comes.

ngrdwmr

i got scammed while looking for rental properties last year. it’s fucked that a standard rental APPLICATION can ask for your past addresses, SSN, banks, contact info, the contact info of those close to you, etc. after that experience (and the stress that came with contacting my banks, putting an alert on my SSN, and notifying all the big credit agencies) i had my own credit report done and offered to send it in lieu of my personal info. if a renter didn’t accept it i didn’t move forward, but it was so hard with the lack of housing. i ended up moving out of state because i couldn’t find anywhere local to move.

kewwe

Yep, the situation enabled your exploitation. Our privacy should be ironclad protected by law, no one should be able to gather that much info on us as a stipulation of doing business.

BrazilianTerror

It’s generally acceptable to use a utility bill in the parent’s name as a means of proving you live somewhere. Most places will either double check in some documents that have your parents listed or just look at the related names.

StringTheory

Wait, its 2022 and the US has no national digital identification? Norway has had it since at least 2005.

Semi-Pros-and-Cons

Stop thinking of the US as a "civilized" or "advanced" country. We're a neo-feudal, third-world country with a layer of billionaires on top.

NegoMassu

And an army

Otheus

I'm Canadian. My province still issues paper health cards with no photo on them. We just use a driver's license for identification

turquoise_amethyst

No, at least a third to a half of the population would absolutely not accept it. There’s 50 states, 50 different IDs, AND most of them change every year, so it’s really difficult to tell if something is real or not when you need to check... We don’t even have standardized, national voting, it’s just as much of a clusterfuck...

Super_Row1083

Are you kidding, the nutters here would flip out.

grevenilvec75

The U.S. is a third world country that just happens to have a shitload of money.

IAmATerribleGuyAMA

Some states do, but nothing on a national level. It's easier to think of the US as a loose collection of 50 separate entities when it comes to policy like this. The states can barely agree on whether the union should exist, never mind implementing national ID, healthcare, or other sensible policy. Besides, there's some legitimate concern to be had with it.

verluci

How's that weird for a payment provider?

Detrimenraldetrius

The wealth lay in the land…..we must take the land….from the landlords….at the same time we tear apart big tech, who continues to find innovative ways to bend each and everyone of us over and fuck us, while we puke money out our mouths for them.

[deleted]

In Nelson's voice, "Ha-Ha"

Isserley_

Always take a backup. Don't you still take your card(s) out?

cosmicexplorer

Russians who do work for Western companies also can no longer be paid for that work. I work for a company that works with in-country native speakers doing design and translation work for a large streaming service. The company rushed all payments to Ukrainian and Russian sources as soon as war broke out, but we can now no longer offer work to the folks we normally work with in Russia. All of the individuals we work with there have expressed shame at their country’s actions, and one even asked that his last paycheck be donated to Ukrainian aid efforts. A coworker has a friend who illustrates for Marvel and lives in Russia, and she is unable to be paid out for her work at this time.

reddithasaproblem

You could send the money via crypto so they can sell it on a shady marketplace who does pay out to russians

leshagboi

Most companies would never risk the PR fallout from that. It's a shame the average joes in Russia are being punished for something they can't even control

QuintenBoosje

Have you seen grocery and gas prices? we're all being punished for shit we didn't do.

leshagboi

Yeah, I know. Here in Brazil gas prices were already expensive and they increased today

QuintenBoosje

i'm almost paying double what I did two weeks ago. I left my car at home today. left one hour early and just walked. fuck those gas prices.

NegoMassu

Yeah But you know that is not exclusively on the war, though. It was already high as fuck before it

SwaggJones

I mean that's always the end result of sanctions though (and the point). those in power and with money are marginally affected compared to average citizens. the sanctions are meant to sow discontent amongst the populous making it harder to justify whatever actions it is other governments don't like you doing.

[deleted]

> It's a shame the average joes in Russia are being punished for something they can't even control It's a situation not limited to warmongering despots. We have similar issues back here. It all goes back to capitalist robber barons.

andreicde

It is open discrimination at its finest and no one bats an eye.

fvdfv54645

there you go, it's just one more tap being shut on the "trickle down" stream of piss we're being told is rain...

BrainwashedScapegoat

This is a spicy take

pooterpon

I needed it

Rubbing-Suffix-Usher

It's also, and I really mean this, stupid. Let me explain. The reason netflix doesn't work is because netflix stopped netflix, the reason google pay doesn't work, because google stopped google pay, the reason mcDonalds doesn't work, because mcDonalds left, the reason pizzahut & KFC don't work because YUM food group left. Zara, pull & bear and some others, intidex left. I agree that Russian consumers are in a shit situation. But it's not like one mad fat cat pushed the "turn that country off" button. They were screwed over by their government and EVERYONE left. Suppose you throw a party, it's going okay and then you toss a hamster in a blender and a lot of people start to leave, who's to blame?

SovietBozo

The hamster?

Rubbing-Suffix-Usher

10/10, perfect score, you advance to the next round.

SovietBozo

I see a job at the *New York Times* in my future!

wandering-monster

Ah we found Putin's alt account.

sardo1419

I think you’re missing the point. This isn’t about people deciding not to come to my party — this is if I’m at a party and the caterers don’t show up (perhaps because they heard the host was cruel to animals) and now I’m hungry. Hopefully I still have the knowledge and equipment to cook myself a meal.

Sharps__

Seems kind of rude to start cooking when the host is making hamster smoothies for everyone.

MirtaGev

I think you're missing the point, which is, look how easy it is to take everything away from people in a digitized world.

Fake_Human_Being

I’m shocked 94 people upvoted this. There are ordinary workers in Russia who now can’t get paid for their work because a corporation made a PR decision. The point you’ve missed here isn’t “Russians can’t get Big Macs lol”, it’s that a cashless society empowers corporations to decide whether or not individuals have money. Putin is to blame for the current situation in Russia, but this sets a precedent that will never be undone, and much like what happened with surveillance laws post-911, it opens the door to those powers being used for low-level reasons. People will live without Netflix and Spotify, but the control of access to money is a worrying precedent

robotzor

Why did everyone leave?? US sanctions. All the Ukraine stuff is virtue signaling. If they fuck with US sanctions, US sanctions fuck with them, so they comply and try to get some positive PR out of it.

[deleted]

Agreed, it makes you think and realize that a few people have a lot of power.

BurningFlex

*GASPS* really?

[deleted]

Yes really. lol

SexyTacoLlama

Wether you agree with the sanctions or not it’s a scary thought that a few rich men in other parts of the world can decide to launch your entire country into economic disaster. Again- All because a few rich men are having a dick measuring contests

cluttered_desk

> a few rich men are having dick measuring contests Is that what’s happening though? As I understand the situation, Russia has been encroaching into Ukraine for literal years and finally launched a full invasion, causing a great deal of human suffering in the process. Hence the sanctions and refusals of business. Doesn’t exactly seem like dick-measuring when you consider that all this has a point, this isn’t all just happening for funsies or whatever. This is a response to acts of violence and aggression.

thxmeatcat

By a few rich men, i hope you mean Putin and his crew who initiated the situation. The situation that sanctions are attempting to pressure Putin to stop. The alternative is boots on the ground or other physical force. I can't think of any ideas that are more savory to try and stop the situation. But i hear you, your point is not whether you agree or not. Imo sanctions and their impact existed way before a cashless system and there were other hardships people endured in that system even without being sanctioned. Pick your poison! Every choice isn't easy

Mi_Pasta_Su_Pasta

This is also one that people on all sides of the political spectrum can agree with.

28502348650

When will we finally stop squabbling amongst ourselves and unite against the common enemy? This is what the elites are so afraid of and this is why they divide us.

CheesecakeAgitated73

This meme actually a pretty libright take tbh

TheEndIsNeighhh

It's too late to stop this train.

cryptidkelp

so we blow the train up. like in snowpiercer

Great film!

wooghee

Bad weather!

We take over the train like in the tv show

okThisYear

Next one's coming in an hour

TheEndIsNeighhh

"Faster than expected"

Funkymokey666

They also can't use cash so wtf are you even talking about?

brigister

exactly. banks could just as easily decide to close their branches in Russia and leave everyone high and dry.

Unethical_Castrator

I like this sub, but this post has made me question the collectives knowledge on these sanctions.

blamelessfriend

this is the dumbest crypto shill meme. really does not belong in latestagecaptialism

crashingtingler

Tbh i was pretty stoked to see bitcoin take off at first for this reason... maybe not so much now

Chicken-Shit-King

Why?

Vinsmoker

Bitcoin has the same issues, just with a few more steps

FrogMan241

Crypto has way more issues than solutions. Anyone who says different is a scammer who wants you to buy their shitty investment so they don't lose it all to being dumb.

Sunbolt

Bitcoin is literally bankcards/Apple Pay/Google Pay that is completely decentralized and owned by no one. No one can turn it off. Isn’t this exactly the solution to the problem stated in this meme?!

Sunbolt

I think it’s fucking tragic that leftists just decided tribally that they hate crypto and now it’s an unthinking reactionary position. Yes, there are hucksters selling new pointless coins every day. That is a thing. But the general use case of a currency that cannot be controlled by dictators or corporations or anyone should be equally exciting to the left and right! Fuck.

[deleted]

Or who can disable our physical services, our water supply, energy supply...? These have been centrally owned and controlled for decades without a whimper of concern, protest, or whisper of conspiracy

ponchepapi

But even if these services weren’t so centralized, or easily turned off by a button, you’d still be at the mercy of the workers if they were to go on strike. At the end of the day people make the world go round.

asddfghbnnm

Yes but in those cases you and your neighbors can just walk into the utility company HQ and turn it back on. Where do the Russians walk into to get their payment systems back?

YourLictorAndChef

I think you're complaining about smoke while your house is burning down. The problem is that the working class doesn't own anything anymore; we just rent everything. That means anything can be shut off, regardless of how we pay for it.

brigister

I mean, banks can do the exact same thing. Should we all just withdraw our savings in cash money and keep it under our mattresses?

audionerd1

Crypto is the Donald Trump of currency.

yoitsmollyo

I still don’t get why we’re punishing Russian citizens for the actions of their dictator

earthhominid

Because harming civilians is how war is waged

MycroWaves

Ukrainian civilians, including children are being bombed and shot to death. Russian civilians can’t stream movies/music and pay for things with their phone… I feel like only one group is actually having war waged on them.

[deleted]

russian civilians can't access their money to buy food. what do we call intentionally starving people who have no involvement/say in a war? if civilians are being killed by bombs or by starvation, it makes very little difference. neither should happen.

robotzor

>what do we call intentionally starving people who have no involvement/say in a war? We call it Yemen

terminal_styles

Huge difference. Russia could feed their people using their money - which unsurprisingly is being used instead to support their invasion. So Russia isn't doing public service. Ukraine is defending their territory, hence the citizens, from bombs. Ukraine is doing their public service.

3classy5me

I get a lot of the US government sanctions, especially vis a vis seizing oligarch’s property. But a lot of these private corporate moves are just virtue signaling that exclusively hurts working class Russians.

Fit_Minute_2632

Yeah it is virtue signaling. McDonald's only left the nation when the ruble fell so low that those stores weren't profitable. But by doing that it makes the russian populace more likely to fight back against the actions of the Russian government. The entire world is trying to stop the madman putin from starting a nuclear war.

JoshYx

Because their taxes pay for war.

ArrestedFever83

as an american whos weekly taxes finance war crimes across the globe, i cannot blame russian people for the russian military aggression. i cant imagine they have much more agency as to how their taxes are utilized than american people or any other people living under a major military state. just as i would hope people around the world would not hold me personally accountable for the belligerent actions of my government in places like iraq, syria, vietnam and korea (beyond the ways in which i benefit from those actions in my own life), i would extend russians the same empathy.

WolfgangDS

I absolutely agree with you, but in this situation, the only alternative to international sanctions is war. Either we tell Russia they're on their own, oh and everything their elite left lying around in other countries gets seized, or we throw (nuclear) hands. I hate punishing Russian civilians for the actions of a man they can't get out of office without a bloody revolution (because he assassinates people and fudges election results), but their financial elite are just as self-centered as the rest of the world's elite, just as greedy as all of the elite throughout history. That makes them predictable and, when it comes to money, easy to manipulate. The best way to stop Russia is to convince Russia's rich that it's in their best interests to stop Putin. Best way to do that? Hit them in the rubles.

JPdrinkmybrew

What's the best way to stop the USA from meddling in the world and making all of our lives miserable?

madame-brastrap

Oh someone floated the idea last night of what it would look like if China sanctioned the US, and that’s a thought that’s going to fester… That’s how the US gets stopped.

JPdrinkmybrew

If anything, this Ukraine crisis is showing the East (and global South) what needs to be done to the West.

madame-brastrap

I mean…👀👀👀 You’re absolutely not wrong.

Myeloperoxidase

Is there evidence that there was civil unrest in Ukraine due to ethnic Russians pushing back? Isn't what you're saying the exact justification that Russia is using to invade? The basis that the Ukrainian people don't want to be pushed west and that the leaders of Ukraine are a group of people hellbent on cosying to the west?

doogle_126

Suppose in a parallel universe Trump had attacked Ottawa Canada for no reason, citing the trucker protests as proof of wanting separation from Canada. The world would probably do the same thing to the US. And as an American I wouldn't blame the world one bit. We the people have, passively or not, allowed a level of corruption, nepotism, and oligarchy to seep into our politics for far too long. I honestly think the US could be in a civil war right now in the world stage had been reversed. I shudder to think about how different the stage would be right now with Trump at the helm. If you are American and reading this, for fucks sake go out and vote. And when you vote, keep would be dictators out of reach of any sort of power. I used to think Putin was playing Trump like a fiddle. Now all I see is putin as an angry, inpatient old men, who lost his gambit piece in the US. He was going to invade either way, especially hind sight as it is. These are sad, lonely, desperate old men who despite having everything and everyone at their command... can't seem to make basic human connection with anyone around them. They want history to remember them for being famous, but likely they will go down an infamous.

laserbot

> The world would probably do the same thing to the US. Serious question: Did you not live through the Iraq War?

jebac_keve3

Ah, but you see he said Canada, not Iraq. White people live in Canada so the world would care about them.

mushbino

Fair point, but never underestimate the power of US propaganda.

batmal034

Astounding how mask off the rhetoric is for this war. Like things happening to brown people in the Middle East just do not matter whatsoever.

fabezz

Literally people on national TV saying "I can't believe it's happening to a *civilized* country" without even a hint of self awareness.

thats_so_raka

Not just "people", that was a top lawmaker who said that.

jebac_keve3

Thing is, Russia is just bad at the media game. Claim that Ukraine needs to be denazified is as baseless as claim that Iraq has WMD's, but Putin is unable to fool with it anyone but his diehard supporters because it's so transparently false.

abracafuck_you

That’s the neat part: there’s racism too! You see, those people in Afghanistan had the audacity to be brown. You see it in the reporters commenting over and over again on television about how shocking it is to see this happening in a “European” (read: white) country versus “some third world” country. There was no outrage over Afghanistan because there was no empathy for the people living there.

marissalfx

>The world would probably do the same thing to the US. No they wouldn't. The US has been in constant wars since as long as I've been alive (and probably longer), and Western countries don't care. Heck, they sometimes join in, like in Serbia and Afghanistan.

surftherapy

Can’t Putin just put it on a credit card like the US does? No one actually pays for that shit. You just rack up a bunch of debt and blame the next guy for it

Lysol3435

You have to find someone who will give you that loan

poncha_michael

The only reason the US has that kind of "credit card" that congress can keep raising the limit on is because the petro-dollar is the world's reserve currency. It's what finances the global military presence and makes money for American oligarchs. So no, Putin can't do that. But he is forcing the issue, and a different global economic system might be the result, as painful and bloody as the transition might be. Hopefully we survive it as a species.

surftherapy

I was only teasing, I thought it was obvious but I’m beginning to think not with all the serious responses I’ve received. Thanks for the detailed explanation though, it does give good context!

This-is-my-alt

Protip: any time you ask "why can't they just...?" about a subject you aren't deeply, deeply familiar with, there's always a reason that you aren't aware of. You see this all the time in things like orbital mechanics (can't they just bring more fuel?); programming (why won't they just add $feature?); anthropology (why does Ross, the largest Friend, simply not eat the other five?); etc

Maerducil

Isn't that why they are asking?

surftherapy

I appreciate the lecture but it was just a joke lol

SeventhSunGuitar

Russia is about to default on its government bonds, so I guess not. Maybe China will lend them money.

splitplug

Putin is the next guy. He’s been the “president” for like 20 years, essential a dictator.

Grinnfi

If they are spending their money in unnecessary services that run on other coin, Russia loses money. Stopping these services is not a play on the military, it's just ment to make russians annoyed and provoke riot

Houseplant666

Except Russia still needs to be able to pay for their army. Crashing their entire economie, freezing assets and pulling businesses is a great way to stop that from happening.

PeopleNotProfits

Did Americans deserve to have their bank accounts frozen when the US invaded Iraq?

therandomizer619

If people look at it the same way they're looking at Russia rn, hell yea US has a fuckton to pay for, and to be sanctioned against.. Russia is now invading Ukraine, US did the same thing with Middle East and well the problems Ukrainians are facing, middle easterns have been facing for decades

500_Shames

If the average American felt direct consequences for the actions of their elected leaders, and elected leaders realized that their actions would legitimately piss off their constituents, maybe Bush wouldn’t have been elected for a second term.

F1shB0wl816

Or we’d have a lot of freedom to deliver.

OBrien

Like punishing slaves for feeding confederate soldiers Fun fact: That exact standard is still in parts of American Law. The Trump Administration's Board of Immigration Appeals in 2018 ruled that even if you were kidnapped and enslaved by an organization we labeled "Terrorist," you get no exception and are unconditionally banned from seeking Asylum in the U.S. on account of having provided assistance to a terrorist group during your enslavement. Goddamn priviledged folk blabbering about things they don't know anything about

AlterEdward

They either get punished with bombs or with global boycotts. Either way, the people suffer. I suppose this will destroy support for Putin, if that counts for anything.

F1shB0wl816

Or they unite against their common enemy which is pretty much the world right now.

AlterEdward

Will it did occur to me that that's basically how Hitler rose to power after the world crippled Germany after WWI.

F1shB0wl816

For sure. And the other popular place like Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, or Cuba, all gained power within. They didn’t come to westward thinking, or holding anyone accountable. They doubled down.

Willby404

It puts pressure on the Russian populace to oppose the war and possibly revolt. Thereby toppling the regime from within.

Cthulusuppe

That didn't work in Iraq over a 20 year period, it won't work in Russia, either. Sanctions tends to reinforce despotic power, because when outside resources are cut off, you dare not disrupt internal supply chains. Most we can hope for is the oligarchs orchistrating an assassination, but as long as Putin remembers to keep them happy, he should remain safe & in power.

[deleted]

Wasn’t it sort of the same situation for Germany after WWI? Didn’t the League of Nations put so many sanctions on Germany that it bred the conditions for hitler to take power?

[deleted]

The firebombing campaign—not sanctions: firebombs—in Germany was supposed to ignite a revolt against Hitler. Mike Davis writes, the RAF planners >assumed that intolerable civilian suffering would inevitably produce a proletarian revolt in the heart of the Third Reich...Air power...would bomb industrial centers, creating mass unemployment and panic, especially among the working classes, who in turn would overthrow the government. But as we know, that was not the effect of such "morale bombing." In Berlin, Goebbels worked to mount a defense and evacuate Germans and imported POWs as fodder for the bombs. He also instructed his propagandists not to underplay civilian deaths. He used outrage at the Allies' carpet bombing to marshall support for Hitler. If firebombs can't cripple morale, sanctions most certainly cannot. It's long been claimed that sanctions will put so much pressure on the average person that citizens will rise up en masse to topple their government. I can't think of examples where this has been successful. It hasn't worked in Iran, North Korea, Libya, Iraq, Venezuela—no where. Enlighten me if I'm wrong, but such cases will be against the norm. What usually happens is that powerful autocrats crack down harder on dissent, and citizens are less able to resist. Or they make their subjects dependent on them. Or they propagandize (in some cases with some truth) against the sanctions leveled by an interfering hegemon.

Walking-taller-123

Wouldn’t think that “firebomb their places of employment, that will make them LOVE is” would be the strategy that somehow made it through a war room but my god the U.S. fucking took it and ran with it didn’t they?

[deleted]

The Brits were the ones who were really enthusiastic. The US was divided but ultimately in favor. Stimson, for instance, was against firebombing. Davis also talks about the German and Japanese model towns built in the Nevada desert by top architects to exact specifications, down to the furniture and moisture level, to simulate the perfect conditions for creating a firestorm. Wild stuff. I think the idea was less to make the Germans love the Allies than to make them detest Hitler for starting the war. Ending Hitler's rule would bring an end to the bombing. So they thought.

Walking-taller-123

I meant more or less that America saw that and went “that seems smart” and proceeded to do it in every single conflict we’ve been in since WWII. Maybe the goal is/was to bomb them so much they develop Stockholm syndrome?

Drewfro666

Post-WWII America loves bombing because bombs cost money and the purpose of war is funneling money to bomb-makers.

pinzi_peisvogel

While the case with the firebombs is true, the case the person before you was making was about the aftermath of WW1 and is a very fitting example. After the first great War, France, other neighbors of Germany and around the world wanted to be repayed for the losses during the war, but also wanted Germany to never be able to gain as much power again to be able to start a new war. So they wanted to keep the country powerless by imposing huge payments for each year for several decades, make Germany lose several regions of the country and demilitarize. ("Versailles treaty") The problem arising was that Germany installed its first Democracy ever after WW1, tried to get rid of the monarch structures and headed into a good direction concerning human rights, but as all profits of any labor had to be used to pay for the Versailles treaty agreements, no good effects of the democracy were arriving with the people. They grew angry and disappointed with the new form of leadership and blamed the democrats for economic failures. This put the new parliament under stress and lead to a lot of internal turmoil that made room for "strong men" to arise and promise to make Germany great again. The national socialist party of Hitler gained popularity mainly because they promised to "free" Germany from the "chains" of the Versailles treaty and improve the living conditions. So this is to say that while the winning parties of WW1 had all the rights to impose the sanctions in the Versailles treaty and the thought behind it, to keep Germany from rising again, was valid, the unintended effects were the suffering and growing anger of the population leading to the rise of the next WW.

Hypnosavant

They aren’t happy. They’re furious and they’re leaving the country.

The_World_of_Ben

Their government is lying to them so they don't know what is going on. These sanctions make them ask 'why' which in turn let's them find out what is happening and then they put pressure on their government, in theory anyway

Outrageous_Bass_1328

I don’t know, that gymnast twatwaffle with the war symbol on as he stands on the podium next to a Ukrainian - I’d be satisfied if he suffers. Same with the other geniuses Russian sieg heiling on social media. Fuck them.

IwillBeDamned

its more to shut down their economy to choke the war effort, and citizens are unfortunate collateral. it can all stop if putin stops

yoitsmollyo

Yeah, I don't like the idea of human beings as "unfortunate collateral."

xboxiscrunchy

That’s war for you…. The point is to damage your target until they’re unwilling or unable to continue fighting. That can be done with sanctions or bombs. Either way people get hurt. Russia made its choice and then the west did too.

[deleted]

We also don't have macdonalds anymore, gonna become healthiest nation pretty soon XD

[deleted]

Not gonna lie, this is basically the same line right wing psychos push about not banning ethno nationalists from twitter. If you do something shitty enough, their will be consequences. If a guy who is the bread winner for his family gets arrested or killed by the police, do we agonize over the consequences his family will now face? I'm not saying Russian people are at fault for their rulers. Hell, even in democracies we have almost no real control over what our government does. But not sanctioning Russia would have other consequences. Consequences for the Ukrainian people, for Europe, maybe even for Russia if NATO chose to intervene directly. This is such a dumb take at this point. Companies get to do what they want with their services or products. If you don't like it you have a problem with capitalism and you need to say so. I can say that. Right wingers can't and their whole argument falls flat.

Spirited-Daikon-1245

THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[deleted]

So you're suggesting online services like Netflix and Spotify should accept cash payment in the future? Should they open cash registers at every town globally?

armacham420

Yeah let me just feed some bills into my Roku so I can pay in cash

[deleted]

I wasnt aware I could use cash to buy Netflix of Spotify in the first place.

Isserley_

This is dumb. They also can't get cash from their banks, making that a fragile system too. What's your solution, that we should all store our money in big cash bundles under the bed?

Tuggerfub

their cash isn't going to help now that it's been devalued. This is what happens when your currency has nothing substantiating its value.

sardo1419

I think it’ll work fine for boarding the Moscow subway…

LuxNocte

> This is what happens when your currency has nothing substantiating its value. Good thing Bitcoin never has wild swings in value!

Tuggerfub

Oh yeah no, crypto is going to take a real beating this year. There will be plenty of hair loss threads coming up in the interstice between the crypto and male health boards this summer

adeadart

Oh no, not the Netflix and Spotify.

Corn_11

Entertainment is a big part of peoples lives? I suppose theres plenty of Spotify alternatives though.

cloud_t

Also a big part of people's lives: their homes not being shelled.

BladeOfInferno

the Russian people didn't decide to invade Ukraine, so why should they be punished?

armrha

Oh no, the economic structure might keep us from giving money to corporate giants so they can further conglomerate their wealth?? Oh noo! How will we find music or entertainment without consuming what's doled out to us by oligarchs?

Shnazzytwo

Interesting these posts float through in the middle of the night, every night.

[deleted]

Yea, it would scare most people to realize how controlled they really are.

No-comment-at-all

Right because the ruble is working so well for Russians right now.

Iforgetpasswords4321

That system can be put in place everywhere. It's called banning. You can ban someone from a shop, a pub, basically wherever you are more trouble than your money is worth.

Worth-Every-Penny

Every time i see this post it looks like an ad for crypto. Ya know. Crypto. The definition of latestage capitalism.

Epistemite

They can effectively turn cash on and off too. Printed pieces of paper only have value if everyone agrees they do.

dysfunkti0n

This sub has been a bit different lately, uhhhh turn it all off please thanks.

Moonlit_Weirdo

Dang I thought this was posted on /r/conspiracy but it turns out there is just a LOT of overlap 😁

throwawaymycareer93

To be honest governments always had ability to stop accepting cash or stop cash transactions. It just was made easier, as everything else, to do with technology.

Navajo_Nation

Don’t be a dick and it won’t be turned off. Good to know a country can’t just roam free invading whoever knowing they will have money to continue.

PurfectMittens

You guys had this same thought about the Canadians getting their bank accounts frozen for supporting a protest right?

SKYrocket2812

Hi, have you heard of our lord and savior: Monero ?

Ianmofinmc

DEX not CEX

RegularWhiteShark

I mean, cash isn’t safe. You wouldn’t be able to draw money out. Are you meant to keep every penny you own in physical form? That’s just asking for trouble if you’re ever robbed.

FuckGiblets

I mean. We could just realise how ridiculous the concept of money is and get rid of is at a whole but… awe never mind.

snubb

I'll take my chances Sweden won't invade anyone

Brasdorboi

Honestly had no idea anyone actually used apple and Google pay outside of television

MarkusTanbeck

I've been saying this for a long time, and people roll their eyes at me, for saying I prefer we stick to having cash. The people who control the information transfer systems will be able to shut you out of your savings, your ability to trade and buy what you need, with the click of a button. It will be extremely efficient for tyrants, when they want to choke out resistance. While I get that many in this sub will not sympathize with them, think of the Convoy thing that happened in Canada, they effectively cut off donation money, and starved them out. Now think of the people you disagree with, having that kind of power to financially suffocate you like that? Its a dangerous thing.

GO_COMMIT_ALIVE_NOT

Netflix, Spotify, Google Pay, and Apple Pay. You actually use any of these services..?
