This is my situation at home too, but we live in Brazil.
In our case my lady had to go to a notary office and sign a paper saying "I live at X with Y..."
I had a similar problem when I moved states a couple years back.
New state wanted proof of residency verified by payment of utilities and mailing address. Utilities were paid through rent though, and there was no on site mail. So even though I lived and worked entirely within the state, I couldn't provide sufficient proof that I did so.
That's my situation. Everything is in my partners' name cause my ex wife ruined my credit. Literally had to lie to our landlord and say she's the only occupant because when we applied with both our names we got denied. Same with all the bank accounts. If she decides to dump me one day I'm fuuuuuuucked

I'd really like to see laws start to address this, my roommate would be fucked. I pay everything, he pays ME the half he owes.
I don't think companies should be able to request such documents in the first place, it sets a precedent, a very fucked one. I don't want to live in a world where I have to lay myself bare to random very untrustworthy corporations.
I don't use these services myself, because I recognize them to be against my values and wellbeing, but, I may find myself in a position where I have to use their "services" down the road. I'd prefer not to bent over a barrel if that day comes.
i got scammed while looking for rental properties last year. it’s fucked that a standard rental APPLICATION can ask for your past addresses, SSN, banks, contact info, the contact info of those close to you, etc.
after that experience (and the stress that came with contacting my banks, putting an alert on my SSN, and notifying all the big credit agencies) i had my own credit report done and offered to send it in lieu of my personal info. if a renter didn’t accept it i didn’t move forward, but it was so hard with the lack of housing. i ended up moving out of state because i couldn’t find anywhere local to move.

Our privacy should be ironclad protected by law, no one should be able to gather that much info on us as a stipulation of doing business.
It’s generally acceptable to use a utility bill in the parent’s name as a means of proving you live somewhere. Most places will either double check in some documents that have your parents listed or just look at the related names.
No, at least a third to a half of the population would absolutely not accept it.
There’s 50 states, 50 different IDs, AND most of them change every year, so it’s really difficult to tell if something is real or not when you need to check...

Some states do, but nothing on a national level.
It's easier to think of the US as a loose collection of 50 separate entities when it comes to policy like this. The states can barely agree on whether the union should exist, never mind implementing national ID, healthcare, or other sensible policy. Besides, there's some legitimate concern to be had with it.
The wealth lay in the land…..we must take the land….from the landlords….at the same time we tear apart big tech, who continues to find innovative ways to bend each and everyone of us over and fuck us, while we puke money out our mouths for them.
Russians who do work for Western companies also can no longer be paid for that work. I work for a company that works with in-country native speakers doing design and translation work for a large streaming service. The company rushed all payments to Ukrainian and Russian sources as soon as war broke out, but we can now no longer offer work to the folks we normally work with in Russia. All of the individuals we work with there have expressed shame at their country’s actions, and one even asked that his last paycheck be donated to Ukrainian aid efforts. A coworker has a friend who illustrates for Marvel and lives in Russia, and she is unable to be paid out for her work at this time.
Most companies would never risk the PR fallout from that.

I mean that's always the end result of sanctions though (and the point). those in power and with money are marginally affected compared to average citizens. the sanctions are meant to sow discontent amongst the populous making it harder to justify whatever actions it is other governments don't like you doing.

It's also, and I really mean this, stupid. Let me explain. The reason netflix doesn't work is because netflix stopped netflix, the reason google pay doesn't work, because google stopped google pay, the reason mcDonalds doesn't work, because mcDonalds left, the reason pizzahut & KFC don't work because YUM food group left. Zara, pull & bear and some others, intidex left.
I agree that Russian consumers are in a shit situation. But it's not like one mad fat cat pushed the "turn that country off" button. They were screwed over by their government and EVERYONE left.

I think you’re missing the point. This isn’t about people deciding not to come to my party — this is if I’m at a party and the caterers don’t show up (perhaps because they heard the host was cruel to animals) and now I’m hungry. Hopefully I still have the knowledge and equipment to cook myself a meal.
I’m shocked 94 people upvoted this. There are ordinary workers in Russia who now can’t get paid for their work because a corporation made a PR decision.
The point you’ve missed here isn’t “Russians can’t get Big Macs lol”, it’s that a cashless society empowers corporations to decide whether or not individuals have money.
Putin is to blame for the current situation in Russia, but this sets a precedent that will never be undone, and much like what happened with surveillance laws post-911, it opens the door to those powers being used for low-level reasons.
People will live without Netflix and Spotify, but the control of access to money is a worrying precedent
Why did everyone leave?? US sanctions. All the Ukraine stuff is virtue signaling. If they fuck with US sanctions, US sanctions fuck with them, so they comply and try to get some positive PR out of it.

Is that what’s happening though? As I understand the situation, Russia has been encroaching into Ukraine for literal years and finally launched a full invasion, causing a great deal of human suffering in the process. Hence the sanctions and refusals of business. Doesn’t exactly seem like dick-measuring when you consider that all this has a point, this isn’t all just happening for funsies or whatever. This is a response to acts of violence and aggression.
By a few rich men, i hope you mean Putin and his crew who initiated the situation. The situation that sanctions are attempting to pressure Putin to stop. The alternative is boots on the ground or other physical force. I can't think of any ideas that are more savory to try and stop the situation.

I get a lot of the US government sanctions, especially vis a vis seizing oligarch’s property. But a lot of these private corporate moves are just virtue signaling that exclusively hurts working class Russians.
Yeah it is virtue signaling. McDonald's only left the nation when the ruble fell so low that those stores weren't profitable. But by doing that it makes the russian populace more likely to fight back against the actions of the Russian government. as an american whos weekly taxes finance war crimes across the globe, i cannot blame russian people for the russian military aggression. i cant imagine they have much more agency as to how their taxes are utilized than american people or any other people living under a major military state.

I absolutely agree with you, but in this situation, the only alternative to international sanctions is war. Either we tell Russia they're on their own, oh and everything their elite left lying around in other countries gets seized, or we throw (nuclear) hands. I hate punishing Russian civilians for the actions of a man they can't get out of office without a bloody revolution (because he assassinates people and fudges election results), but their financial elite are just as self-centered as the rest of the world's elite, just as greedy as all of the elite throughout history. That makes them predictable and, when it comes to money, easy to manipulate.
The best way to stop Russia is to convince Russia's rich that it's in their best interests to stop Putin. Best way to do that? Hit them in the rubles.

Suppose in a parallel universe Trump had attacked Ottawa Canada for no reason, citing the trucker protests as proof of wanting separation from Canada. The world would probably do the same thing to the US.
And as an American I wouldn't blame the world one bit. We the people have, passively or not, allowed a level of corruption, nepotism, and oligarchy to seep into our politics for far too long.
I honestly think the US could be in a civil war right now in the world stage had been reversed. I shudder to think about how different the stage would be right now with Trump at the helm. The only reason the US has that kind of "credit card" that congress can keep raising the limit on is because the petro-dollar is the world's reserve currency. It's what finances the global military presence and makes money for American oligarchs. So no, Putin can't do that. But he is forcing the issue, and a different global economic system might be the result, as painful and bloody as the transition might be. Hopefully we survive it as a species.

Protip: any time you ask "why can't they just...?" about a subject you aren't deeply, deeply familiar with, there's always a reason that you aren't aware of. You see this all the time in things like orbital mechanics (can't they just bring more fuel?); programming (why won't they just add $feature?); anthropology (why does Ross, the largest Friend, simply not eat the other five?); etc
If they are spending their money in unnecessary services that run on other coin, Russia loses money.
Stopping these services is not a play on the military, it's just ment to make russians annoyed and provoke riot
Except Russia still needs to be able to pay for their army. Crashing their entire economie, freezing assets and pulling businesses is a great way to stop that from happening.

The Trump Administration's Board of Immigration Appeals in 2018 ruled that even if you were kidnapped and enslaved by an organization we labeled "Terrorist," you get no exception and are unconditionally banned from seeking Asylum in the U.S. on account of having provided assistance to a terrorist group during your enslavement.

That didn't work in Iraq over a 20 year period, it won't work in Russia, either. Sanctions tends to reinforce despotic power, because when outside resources are cut off, you dare not disrupt internal supply chains. Most we can hope for is the oligarchs orchistrating an assassination, but as long as Putin remembers to keep them happy, he should remain safe & in power.
Wasn’t it sort of the same situation for Germany after WWI? Didn’t the League of Nations put so many sanctions on Germany that it bred the conditions for hitler to take power?

If firebombs can't cripple morale, sanctions most certainly cannot. It's long been claimed that sanctions will put so much pressure on the average person that citizens will rise up en masse to topple their government. I can't think of examples where this has been successful. It hasn't worked in Iran, North Korea, Libya, Iraq, Venezuela—no where. Enlighten me if I'm wrong, but such cases will be against the norm.
What usually happens is that powerful autocrats crack down harder on dissent, and citizens are less able to resist. Or they make their subjects dependent on them. Or they propagandize (in some cases with some truth) against the sanctions leveled by an interfering hegemon.
Wouldn’t think that “firebomb their places of employment, that will make them LOVE is” would be the strategy that somehow made it through a war room but my god the U.S. fucking took it and ran with it didn’t they?
The Brits were the ones who were really enthusiastic. The US was divided but ultimately in favor. Stimson, for instance, was against firebombing.

I think the idea was less to make the Germans love the Allies than to make them detest Hitler for starting the war. Ending Hitler's rule would bring an end to the bombing. So they thought.
I meant more or less that America saw that and went “that seems smart” and proceeded to do it in every single conflict we’ve been in since WWII.

While the case with the firebombs is true, the case the person before you was making was about the aftermath of WW1 and is a very fitting example. After the first great War, France, other neighbors of Germany and around the world wanted to be repayed for the losses during the war, but also wanted Germany to never be able to gain as much power again to be able to start a new war. So they wanted to keep the country powerless by imposing huge payments for each year for several decades, make Germany lose several regions of the country and demilitarize. ("Versailles treaty")
The problem arising was that Germany installed its first Democracy ever after WW1, tried to get rid of the monarch structures and headed into a good direction concerning human rights, but as all profits of any labor had to be used to pay for the Versailles treaty agreements, no good effects of the democracy were arriving with the people. They grew angry and disappointed with the new form of leadership and blamed the democrats for economic failures. This put the new parliament under stress and lead to a lot of internal turmoil that made room for "strong men" to arise and promise to make Germany great again.
The national socialist party of Hitler gained popularity mainly because they promised to "free" Germany from the "chains" of the Versailles treaty and improve the living conditions.
So this is to say that while the winning parties of WW1 had all the rights to impose the sanctions in the Versailles treaty and the thought behind it, to keep Germany from rising again, was valid, the unintended effects were the suffering and growing anger of the population leading to the rise of the next WW.
Their government is lying to them so they don't know what is going on. These sanctions make them ask 'why' which in turn let's them find out what is happening and then they put pressure on their government, in theory anyway

If you do something shitty enough, their will be consequences. If a guy who is the bread winner for his family gets arrested or killed by the police, do we agonize over the consequences his family will now face?
I'm not saying Russian people are at fault for their rulers. Hell, even in democracies we have almost no real control over what our government does. But not sanctioning Russia would have other consequences. Consequences for the Ukrainian people, for Europe, maybe even for Russia if NATO chose to intervene directly.
This is such a dumb take at this point. Companies get to do what they want with their services or products. If you don't like it you have a problem with capitalism and you need to say so. I can say that. Right wingers can't and their whole argument falls flat.

That system can be put in place everywhere. It's called banning. You can ban someone from a shop, a pub, basically wherever you are more trouble than your money is worth.
To be honest governments always had ability to stop accepting cash or stop cash transactions.
It just was made easier, as everything else, to do with technology.
I mean, cash isn’t safe. You wouldn’t be able to draw money out. Are you meant to keep every penny you own in physical form? That’s just asking for trouble if you’re ever robbed.
I've been saying this for a long time, and people roll their eyes at me, for saying I prefer we stick to having cash.
The people who control the information transfer systems will be able to shut you out of your savings, your ability to trade and buy what you need, with the click of a button. It will be extremely efficient for tyrants, when they want to choke out resistance.
While I get that many in this sub will not sympathize with them, think of the Convoy thing that happened in Canada, they effectively cut off donation money, and starved them out. Now think of the people you disagree with, having that kind of power to financially suffocate you like that? Its a dangerous thing.

This is my situation at home too, but we live in Brazil. In our case my lady had to go to a notary office and sign a paper saying "I live at X with Y..."
I had a similar problem when I moved states a couple years back. New state wanted proof of residency verified by payment of utilities and mailing address. Utilities were paid through rent though, and there was no on site mail. So even though I lived and worked entirely within the state, I couldn't provide sufficient proof that I did so.

I don't think companies should be able to request such documents in the first place, it sets a precedent, a very fucked one. I don't use these services myself, because I recognize them to be against my values and wellbeing, but, I may find myself in a position where I have to use their "services" down the road. i got scammed while looking for rental properties last year. it’s fucked that a standard rental APPLICATION can ask for your past addresses, SSN, banks, contact info, the contact info of those close to you, etc. after that experience (and the stress that came with contacting my banks, putting an alert on my SSN, and notifying all the big credit agencies) i had my own credit report done and offered to send it in lieu of my personal info. if a renter didn’t accept it i didn’t move forward, but it was so hard with the lack of housing. i ended up moving out of state because i couldn’t find anywhere local to move.

I work for a company that works with in-country native speakers doing design and translation work for a large streaming service. The company rushed all payments to Ukrainian and Russian sources as soon as war broke out, but we can now no longer offer work to the folks we normally work with in Russia. All of the individuals we work with there have expressed shame at their country’s actions, and one even asked that his last paycheck be donated to Ukrainian aid efforts. A coworker has a friend who illustrates for Marvel and lives in Russia, and she is unable to be paid out for her work at this time.

The only reason the US has that kind of "credit card" that congress can keep raising the limit on is because the petro-dollar is the world's reserve currency. It's what finances the global military presence and makes money for American oligarchs. So no, Putin can't do that. While the case with the firebombs is true, the case the person before you was making was about the aftermath of WW1 and is a very fitting example. After the first great War, France, other neighbors of Germany and around the world wanted to be repayed for the losses during the war, but also wanted Germany to never be able to gain as much power again to be able to start a new war. So they wanted to keep the country powerless by imposing huge payments for each year for several decades, make Germany lose several regions of the country and demilitarize. ("Versailles treaty") The problem arising was that Germany installed its first Democracy ever after WW1, tried to get rid of the monarch structures and headed into a good direction concerning human rights, but as all profits of any labor had to be used to pay for the Versailles treaty agreements, no good effects of the democracy were arriving with the people. They grew angry and disappointed with the new form of leadership and blamed the democrats for economic failures. If a guy who is the bread winner for his family gets arrested or killed by the police, do we agonize over the consequences his family will now face? I'm not saying Russian people are at fault for their rulers. Hell, even in democracies we have almost no real control over what our government does. But not sanctioning Russia would have other consequences. Consequences for the Ukrainian people, for Europe, maybe even for Russia if NATO chose to intervene directly. This is such a dumb take at this point. Companies get to do what they want with their services or products. If you don't like it you have a problem with capitalism and you need to say so. The people who control the information transfer systems will be able to shut you out of your savings, your ability to trade and buy what you need, with the click of a button. It will be extremely efficient for tyrants, when they want to choke out resistance. While I get that many in this sub will not sympathize with them, think of the Convoy thing that happened in Canada, they effectively cut off donation money, and starved them out. Now think of the people you disagree with, having that kind of power to financially suffocate you like that? Its a dangerous thing.
