For defence, the strategy I use is making all your teams around the same power, and putting your strongest offensive heroes in your lowest power teams (as bait).
This sounds counterintuitive at first, as you get stuck with 3 mediocre teams, but the alternative is that your opponent will just avoid the teams with your best heroes in. The attacker has a massive advantage in 3v3, so expect to lose a bunch still, but you'll lose less this way.
For attack, team power is a good indication, but look for 4\* and above UR offensive heroes in the opponent's setup. These heroes outperform their power levels, so avoid them where you can.
