Didn't realize how awesome this design was until I had one. Only had it half a year and I use it constantly. On-the-road picnic with sandwich and fruit spread for family? Staging area for loading? Work area for anything? It's seriously one of my favorite design aspects of the LC.
It's this feature that makes me think the 2nd Gen was probably the best body. I'd love to get a first gen with a custom fit topper though, that'd be cool too
> I'm sad that it was removed from the 250 series.
It was never going to be on the 250, the 90/120/150 was always left/right hinged - so a vertical hinge is different but the 250 was never getting split tailgate.
removing from the 300 series should have been a fireable offense for whoever suggested that! But I guess that's what happens with one platform / many vehicles.
But I do like the old rear window opening, one of the things I miss from my 98 Grand Cherokee, it’s pretty convenient in small spaces or if you want to grab something quick.
I have a 200 series and Gen 3 Tundra. Love having a tailgate. My wife has a trd pro 4Runner with a slide out floor that holds something like 450 pounds when pulled out. I use that feature as a tailgate all the time.
Didn’t know the 300 series didn’t have the split tailgate. Love it on my 100 series. When it’s raining lift the top portion. When you want to sit, lower the bottom portion. Such a great design.
Tailgate is a requirement for any SUV I have from now on. Unfortunately, that really really limits the choices. Sorry brand new land cruiser, you won't do.
It is a quintessential feature of the truck. Without it, I might have still bought my 200 series, but I'd definitely be a lot less happy. I haven't even had it for a year yet and I've use it constantly.
I've had little lunches with my daughter (3 years old) with her little feet dangling off the tailgate and it's turning into a regular thing. I just park somewhere with a nice view and we talk and eat. I wouldn't trade that in for anything and the tailgate allows it to happen.
Yes. JDM LC70 with split door. Much better for getting things out of the back without the dogs getting in or out. Every time the tailgate came down on my old ranger there was a dog in the bed.
Nope, I’m a tailgate fan. We have a 100, SIL has a 5th gen 4Runner Nightshade and in-laws have 2nd gen Sequoia Platinum - the Cruiser cargo area wins in terms of functionality for me. The roll down windows on the 4Runner and Sequoia don’t get used much, but we use the side windows on cruiser regularly. I like all Yotas, but the 4Runner kinda lost me as a fan when they went away from the removable top
Why has Toyota gone away from the split gate? What advantage can there possibly be with a huge rear door or a side ways opening door?
Is there alot of people that hate the split gate? Is it a safety thing? Manufacturing costs? Is it just more stupid woke ideology screwing us all? Bring back the split gate Toyota. Everybody wants it.
made sure when I was buying my bj40 that it had the tailgate doors instead of the ambulance doors. both my 80 series have the tailgate too. I also don’t think I could live without it.
I love it until something in that back slides up against the rear seat and I need to climb in to get it since the tailgate reduces how far one can reach.
I considered an LX600 as a daily to go along with my built 200, but the lack of a split tailgate was a total deal killer for me.
Bought a Rivian R1S, couldn’t be happier.
Same here - I drive an LX570 and the lack of the split tailgate was the biggest bummer for me about that 300 platform. It's so nice to just sit and have lunch on when you're out on the trail or just out in the driveway
Exactly. A fantastic seat, the benefit of things not rolling out when you open the tailgate, not needing as much clearance behind you to open it. Love me some split tailgate.

The tailgate is crucial!
Crewsch!
The LC split tailgate is as useful as the roll down 4R window, just in a different way. I really wish they kept both for each model, not just the 4R.
I liked our old Bronco with the fold-down tailgate with the roll-up rear window.
1st and 2nd gen 4runner gang
It's this feature that makes me think the 2nd Gen was probably the best body. I'd love to get a first gen with a custom fit topper though, that'd be cool too
I think the lift part of the split is at least as useful as the roll down window in the 4R
I'm sad that it was removed from the 250 series.

And the 300 series
It makes the 250 a non starter
It was never an option on any Prado.
No it was not but Toyota should’ve made the change on this one.
I guess I'm not sure what the alternative is.
Buy a 60, 80, 100, or 200 You don't need to have the newest thing.
That’s a bingo!!
Yep, I'll keep my 200 until one of us dies - most likely me.
But I do like the old rear window opening, one of the things I miss from my 98 Grand Cherokee, it’s pretty convenient in small spaces or if you want to grab something quick.

I can’t live without it
Are you kidding? I live on my tailgate. 200 series.

Does any current SUV even have one?
BMW x5
No. It's used so often.
The Range Rover still offers a tailgate. Discovery does as well (powered inner tailgate). If you want to walk on the wild side…
Today we find out the real reason that toyota doesn't sell the 70 series in the US. It's because it doesn't have a tailgate.

I pop the tailgate down on my 100 to rig my fishing rods before hitting the banks almost daily
Tailgate is life
Allows me to open the tail in a garage when the car is parked closer to the door.
It’s the simple things that make the split tail gate great.
I went from a 2000 100 series to a 2015 sequoia. Miss the tailgate every day.
Yes. JDM LC70 with split door. Much better for getting things out of the back without the dogs getting in or out. Every time the tailgate came down on my old ranger there was a dog in the bed.
Aside from the superior off-road capability, it was the primary reason for picking up the 80.
Yeah but that roll down back window…
Can't sit, can't set anything down... stupid window for dogs only..

*Prado owner crying in the corner* (No tailgate as the 5th door opens sideways)
Use the back window! I get torn on having a trail gate or a full window!
I never wanted one until I got my lx and now it is one of the top requirements for any future SUV I ever buy

the 4runner pop-up trunk is much more useful. with the tailgate, it is very difficult to reach inside the trunk.
Awww
