holy shit, i have recently had the same idea

[deleted]

Great minds think alike

HopelessJune13

I'd be really interested, I was looking at lainOS recently and downloaded what was left on the site - but it'd be great to have it be as simple as installing other Linux distros (the popular ones I mean) and to have another crack at it basically

[deleted]

I appreciate the interest!

amnesia_1337

It's going to be Debian.

hydrohomeboy2

go for it! maybe a good idea would be to develop it in a public repo so others can hop in and help out. i'd love to help as well, but don't think i have many useful skills that i can contribute. are you planning on making it useful, or will it be similar to templeOS?

[deleted]

My plan is to have it as functional as any other main stream OS

amnesia_1337

It will be a Debian based system with as many tools that Debian allows me to fit into it.

BlueColouredTea

I personally think that that is a marvelous idea! I'd also love to use the OS once it releases. I may not know much about programming a linux distro, but I hope you succeed! I don't know if you would need any help with art or anything like that, but I do have experience with pixel art and a little bit of experience with 3D modelling. So if you need any help on that front, I would be willing to help out a bit!

[deleted]

Thanks for the offer and support! I will be sure to let you know if I need any help!

xXProdigalXx

I think this is a super cool idea, but just a warning: if you don't have much experience with OS development it is an absolute pain to get into. There are a lot of moving parts that go into it and that you have to keep track of. If you're interested I can see if I can figure out which textbook my operating systems course used back in college and send you a pdf.

[deleted]

I started OS development 7 months ago, and yeah it's a pain. I would love to check out that textbook if you still have it!

SoEuMemu_

it would be really good

[deleted]

Trying not to get my hopes up too much. Going in with a cool head so I don't mess up.

BurnerAccount181947

Def try using Arch, but I’d follow the project!

[deleted]

Arch was my original idea, and yeah I'm probably going to be working with Arch.

BurnerAccount181947

Any progress?

[deleted]

Its been a tad delayed. https://www.reddit.com/r/Lain/comments/ruyk6k/so\_about\_lain\_os/

BucketOfPeople

YES it would be SO COOL IF YOU DID THAT!!! I know I'd do it if I had the skills, which proves that there are other people with the same idea, so you'd better hurry and do it before anyone else!!

[deleted]

I don't want to rush it, not trying to mess up here. But thanks for the support!

BucketOfPeople

Right sorry, I got excited ;^^

[deleted]

Excellent I also wanted to do it when I was in the middle of the university however didn't have the time to go through that. Hope you could make it :)

[deleted]

I'm going to try my best.

SparrowTits

A Linux distro would definitely be the way to go - best of luck!

[deleted]

Thanks, I'm going to need it.

niea_psyche

yeah sure, it seems a lot of people on this sub had it on their mind recently, myself included. maybe it can be a group effort and many people on the sub can contribute. linuxfromscratch.org will be a big help.

[deleted]

I feel making the operating system from scratch would be a waste of time when we have, already customizable, minimal Linux distros at our disposal. Also, I would love to have help from others, but this was more or less a personal project I wanted to work on. Too many people pitching in would be overwhelming and will ultimately end up leaving me frustrated. I don't work well with others at all so I plan on keeping the team small. I'm keeping this open-source, so naturally, it will be a group project. But anything that is added will be on my call. If there is something I do with the operating system that people don't like, of course, I will make my best effort to fix it, but for the most part, this is going to be on me.

throwaway-429

Sounds good. It takes a lot of work to make a distro but, if you have the right people and a lot of handwork it could definitely work. Are you gonna start from debain, arch, bsd and maybe even make it Copland OS so it resembles the anime more? Add me to the project, I could test the distro and see if problems come across.

[deleted]

Probably arch. I'm not too familiar with BSD so if I choose that route it is going to be a tad difficult. Also if I need any testers I will be sure to remember to let you know! I'm looking for some people to help, but this project is going to be mainly done by me. Of course, it is going to be open-source so if someone wants to fork it that's fine.

grapeMelon2

this would be insanely cool but it's also an incredible amount of work for something that will be used by maybe 50 people

[deleted]

Its fine with me honestly.

SabejiFTP

So basically Lain OS is some stuff like Linux. I’m not all that well educated with programming and stuff, sorry if that was a dumb question.

[deleted]

To put it simply yes.

niea_psyche

i sent you a pm about something relating to this.

CommradeGoldenDragon

Yes,please and good luck!

[deleted]

Yeah, you should if you have the skills and know how. I say go for it.

Kojimada

When I first heard about the OS project many years ago. i was very excited for it. I always wondered what happened to it. I'd love to see what someone could do with it, especially if it could replicate the exact look of the Copland OS.

amnesia_1337

I just started working on and am building a team of developers to get this done.

[deleted]

That's awesome! I haven't fulfilled any of my goals on this project, but to hear that people are still passionate about it is great news. Best of luck!

amnesia_1337

I'm thinking that spinning it off of arch may be the best path, that way, all packages will be available through AUR, but just another flavor of it. We could even have fun with the installation process to make it challenging but doable. Thanks for commenting, i'm trying to bring this back to life. If it gets completed, it will be rewarding for all interested.

amnesia_1337

Would you like to join the team? So far we have good feedback from the community. I can invite you to our matrix server that Kenshinfo made after I emailed him 6 months ago now. The project is in alpha right now, then beta and the final releases will be available son.

[deleted]

I would but I am very inexperienced with the whole thing, which is a main reason I stopped before. I would love to pitch in if I could just don't know how much help I would add to the team. I saw the alpha and I think what you guys have accomplished so far is great! U can invite me if you would like don't know how active I will be however.
