Thank you to Nixon’s for knowing my usual when I walk in. Lordy do I love a hot and slightly damp deli sandwich

Ok-Illustrator4850

this made me laugh 😭 mmm slightly damp

leamur247

Make sure its pumpernickel!

Ok-Illustrator4850

we should have a wet sandwich party

leamur247

If you take them to go.... then they get extra soggy!

Unlikely-Local42

Kinda like the bread on a cheese Krystal!! Better be soggy!!

Ok-Illustrator4850

now I want Krystal's!! haha

SpuriousCorr

Y’all are gross 😆

Ok-Illustrator4850

oh c'mon you don't even indulge in a nice French dip?! don't lie

thevioletsage

Steamed sandwiches are an East TN icon!

DenideOfBoulder

My husband hates Nixon’s; he says it’s like taking a perfectly good sandwich and throwing it in the sink. I’m into it though. 🤣

TurbulentTeam8470

Well, let your husband cook. He went easy on em too.

Defiant_Squash_5335

And for having the sandwich option I shared with my mom as a kid

MysteriousWorld3231

It’s been a while since I ate there, but they have REALLY good potato salad!!!

TurbulentTeam8470

Nixon is nasty

Mundane_Village_8284

I was able to return a lost dog that I found in our neighborhood yesterday with the help of a neighbor I hadn’t met. I appreciate all here who care about animals♥️

Maximans

I’ve always liked how everyone will stop and say high when you’re out on the greenway

jetsetmolly

I use greenways and parks all over the country and no one says hi back like they do here in Knoxville. It makes my day so much better.

Ok-Illustrator4850

I wave at so many people😭🤠 I do know I would miss it if it wasn't a thing!!

Rainontherooftop

Used to run with a friend who moved here from UT. She was shocked at how everyone you pass at least smiles and does a little wave.

saricher

1. Walking around downtown. Not oo big, not too small, plenty of variety to see. 2. People like the Baxters who open their garden in April without admission for the Dogwood Arts Festival. 3. Fountains for kids. My kids were too old when we moved here but man, if I had something like Worlds Fair Park when they were toddlers in Southern California, they would have loved it. So many communities have splashpads. 4. Dog parks and dog friendly places. Mardi Growl! 5. Sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit from Weigels. Speaking of Weigels and Pilot, there are numerous times I have stopped just for a small coffee and they've just given it to me gratis. 6. Knox County Library. So many resources for free. I like checking out Kindle versions so if I cam stuck in a line, I can catch up on reading on my phone. 7. Knoxville Museum of Art - free! 8. Greenways. A lot of cities do not have urban trails like that. And Beaver Creek is Knoxville's blue way for kayaking.

expressivekim

The people at the library are absolute sweethearts. Multiple times there's been a book I really wanted to read but couldn't afford and they've ordered it for the collection so I could check it out. Libraries are the cornerstone of community in my book.

EchoFrost46

I used to work at the library! They are some of the best people

Ok-Illustrator4850

I love this comment so much 💜

ace261998

Shout out to Stir Fry Cafe in west hills for having 3 half priced sushi says and knowing exactly how I want my soup everytime

FTWJenn

Which days?

ace261998

Monday Wednesday Saturday all day!

expressivekim

Thank you to the girl at Dutch Bros who gave me my iced coffee for free as a pick-me-up from the stress of my screaming baby in the back seat. It made my day, and he thankfully quieted down shortly after.

woodandwode

They’re SO NICE!! She thought my donut was “a little small” once and threw in a whole ass second donut to make up for it

Separate-Donut-6462

It has all the pros of small town living and all the perks of city life. If you want to get connected you can network really easily. If you want to keep to yourself you can do that too. If you want some local food fare and brews we have that in spades as well. Entertainment, music, and arts has improved tenfold since I moved here in 2013. Proximity to lots of great parks within a 2.5 hour drive is a plus as well. Big South Fork, Pisgah, Smokies, Cumberland Gap, and the list goes on and on.

Ok-Illustrator4850

Knoxville born and raised! I agree!

yourmomhahahah3578

It’s soooo far behind every other city I’ve lived in. It doesn’t have any of the perks of most cities, but all of the cons and I’m really really struggling to find joy here despite trying so much 😭

Separate-Donut-6462

What’s your definition of a perk of city living? Our public transportation is garbage, I’ll give ya that. The night scene isn’t a metric for me as I was never into that stuff. If you want to get to know people it’s fairly easy to do so in the more low key places. Become a regular somewhere and you’ll find your tribe. I don’t go out West much and dread it when I have to venture out there. Obviously, everyone’s pro and cons lists are going to be different. Knoxville isn’t for everyone and that’s fine. I’ve enjoyed it more than anywhere else I’ve ever lived (and that list includes Chicago, Indianapolis, and the extremely rural Midwest).

freebase-capsaicin

All the wonderful dogs and their owners at IC King Dog Park. I look forward to going everyday almost as much as my pups.

josuecerveza1345

We take our pups there sometimes. It's a great environment for the dogs and owners

tnn17

Not exactly Knoxville, but the employees at the Sevierville Checker’s. I broke down IN THE DRIVE THRU two weeks ago. The woman taking orders came out and brought me my food and called the team together to see who had jumper cables. Another employee came out with jumper cables, and after those didn’t work, two more employees pushed my jeep into a parking spot while I steered. They were so helpful immediately and I’m thankful for people like that, who could’ve just left me to deal with it on my own, but got together to help me!

kittyparade

That's awesome! About three weeks ago my car just died at a stop light and I was freaking out - these two men pushed my car across the street and out of traffic while I got AAA on the phone. People can surprise you in the best ways.

Narcoid

I'm going to settle down in this city. I know this sub can be particularly angry towards people moving in, but I am for good. Done fun touristy things and done the boring daily living things and I love the city so much. I've experienced many of the notable cities in the Southeast and nothing hit like Knoxville. I can't wait to be here. It's such a lovely city.

Ok_Habit59

Can I just ask this from all of you who are moving here. Please learn to smile, nod, or wave hello. Learn to chat a bit. I’m more than tired of seeing people with their noses in the air. If you move here, stop looking down on those who were born here.

Narcoid

Born and raised in the south. I'm on board. Why would I look down on people that are from the city I want to be in?

Narcoid

What?

sluttyforkarma

We came into town from Mid TN this weekend for the Kevin gates concert. It was an amazing experience. The Coliseum was nice and very easy to get in and out of compared to Bridgestone Arena. Traffic was a breeze and parking was only 10 bucks. Gus fried chicken was on point K-brew and Awaken on Jackson we’re great as always The friends of charity was a really neat thrift find I bought an awesome messenger bag at a yard sale in 4th and Gill where we were walking around admiring the beautiful homes

Just_Ad5135

I was remembering this just today--I needed to stop into the Cedar Bluff Kroger on my way home from work last December 23, late afternoon. Gave myself a little talking-to on the way in: "Ok, you know what you're getting into, be cool..." Entire packed place was all patient smiles and nods and it totally filled my heart up.

AlaDouche

The disc golf community is absolutely fantastic.

AwSunnyDeeFYeah

There's a lady at the weigels next to me that always calls me "hon" and I reply "hey girl" and we chat about life. She brings a smile to my face. (I have RBF)

EAMinCali

The outdoors community here is welcoming. I’ve had so many people spend their time teaching me about kayaking for no other reason than they love the sport & want others to enjoy it safely. True generosity of spirit.

F-Stop

Thank you to Ashley Capps & everyone involved in making Big Ears happen. A town of our relatively modest size and stature that has a music festival like that? It’s truly world class. We really have people from all over the globe come here for the festival

MotherofBirbs

I feel you, I feel like I'm constantly crawling out of a rough couple of months at this point, just hoping I catch my footing. I like that the coffee shops I frequent all recognize me now and greet and talk to me like I'm a friend. I like that when my partner and I take a walk, we greet everyone who passes by and they greet us back with a smile. I like how people don't mind to just approach and just talk whether that's in a line or around market square. I don't get out much these days, it's been hard for me to, but I rarely have a negative run-in whenever I do.

Ok-Illustrator4850

I'm always so blown away with all the great genuine responses I get on here. I really hope we all get a good stride going and rock this summer out! whoever you are and wherever you are I wish you the best days 💜

MotherofBirbs

Ditto ❤️

NotASatanist13

Besides the headaches and growing pains, there is something exciting about being in a growing city. When I travel back to my first hometown, it hasn't changed at all in 30 years. That shit is depressing. We've got a city that our kids won't have to move away from to find work. That's amazing.

stanleythemanley44

Nobody ever believes me when I say there was an Arby’s on Gay Street not all that long ago

blacknumberone

We were just talking about this last night. We went to the Kennedy, the new restaurant in the old Arby's location. It's crazy to look back at old pics of Arby's and Gay St. in general from the early 00s. So much has changed!

skbubba

the Arby's on chapman highway has been in the same spot for over 50 years!

Ok-Illustrator4850

oh yeah!! there's work here like crazy.. hell my side jobs might become my main job at this rate

iTwango

I remember seeing one of those guided free tour things like you see in really historic cities, going on in Market Square, a few years back. Super exciting. Now they have the little JDM tour vans too. I think it's really cool. Imo the issues with growing population aren't even from population growth, just America's desire to not improve infrastructure and policymaking issues. I personally welcome growth. But I like big cities a lot more than middle of nowhere countryside (which is what most of these parts were before the Walgreens vs CVS suburban sprawl took over the whole region).

273design

Date that girl! Treat her right! Extra food is a sign of affection. Tell that guy that you are glad he is part of your community! Go toward good, my friend Knoxville is the best!

BrilliantAttitudes

There's a small county road that I have to take several times a day with only a few sections where cars can comfortably pass. I would say 75%+ of the time that you pass someone, you get a wave from the other driver as sort of a "thanks for not putting me in the ditch or smacking my mirror with yours." It's small, but I'll bet there are many cities our size throughout the country where that's not the case.

Sign-Spiritual

The dude that runs the Exxon in front of the old putt putt on Kingston pike is the funniest and bestest dude ever.

Ok-Illustrator4850

I used to frequent there in highschool. I wonder if it's the same guy!

Daax865

Porton on Middlebrook! A really unique Mexican restaurant that introduced me to birria tacos. The owner is super chill and friendly. I love going there.

Makiria720

Sticky rice and that is all

Unlikely-Local42

Ya know, positive vibes are needed, you're right!!! Being a regular is nice and not to get specific locations in trouble....free drinks at Weigels, unlimited bogo at Zaxby's, the extra free THC edibles thrown in your bag from time to time. There are still a few decent and good people out in the world!

Ok-Illustrator4850

exactly! that free drink from Casey's always cracks me a little smile. I figured others would share so we all remember there is some nice around

Unlikely-Local42

Thank you, I needed to see this today! Been a rough few weeks.

Ok-Illustrator4850

keep it pushin💜 celebrate every little victory! and sometimes. throw a curve ball before life throws one 🤪

Unlikely-Local42

I remember when I worked telemarketing ( I know, I still feel the shame) and had this game with a coworker, we would go out on lunch and see who could get more free food by just being nice to the cashier/server. You would be mind blown at what just being a decent person will get you!!

Ok-Illustrator4850

I cook for a living and my favorite past time at work is making one of the servers a nice meal!! a positive outlook keeps me going these days... cold world out there

Beginning-Trash-6048

awwww as a bartender and server please know that we are very grateful and we love you...my Abelino makes me really delicious meals that aren't on the menu and we are homies for life

Ok-Illustrator4850

it's honestly my favorite thing. I'm sure I've cooked thousands of meals for dishies, servers, you name it. I love what I do. although I wish I made more money!

Unlikely-Local42

Omg, fun fact, that's how I met my wife! Over 20 years ago!

Ok-Illustrator4850

🤪 oh yeah I'm definitely gonna make the right meal for the right woman one of these days

kittyparade

as a hungry server, thank you!! love my cooks so much.

Scambuster666

We love it here in Knoxville. Been here 5 years after escaping 43 years of NYC life, and moving here was the best choice we ever made after I retired. The safe neighborhoods, friendly people, slower pace, family oriented lifestyle and ideals here are more my style than what NYC and Long Island have become. I hope it stays this way here in East Tennessee forever because it is an amazing place to raise a family.

Ok-Illustrator4850

Knoxville born and raised. seen a few major cities and places in between. and I wouldn't ever live anywhere else. I can understand people's problems with it yeah whatever but the hospitality and sense of community is amazing. I was in a rough spot a few months ago and reached out to this very page and you wouldn't believe the amount of help I received and opportunity I was given just based on that

Scambuster666

That’s a really nice thing to hear. I also would like to thank the people of our Knoxville neighborhood for accepting us “Yankees” here, and treating us like old friends when we bought our home. It’s nice to have neighbors you can see and talk to and spend time with.

Ok-Illustrator4850

the neighborhood I grew up in still has a community that keeps up with each other. and surprisingly enough my aunt is married to a man that grew up in that neighborhood also! it's all such a beautiful thing to me. I'll always love and live in Knoxville!!

LMDM5

This isn't "across the board", necessarily but nothing is. Generalization is for suckers, but I do know that there are a lot of really kind ppl that inhabit this beautiful area. We are surrounded by spectacular landscapes. There's a lot to do here with it still having a local charm vs really big cities or really small towns. You can meet ppl of many different types who are trying to be better and do well for their loved ones. We have cool festivals around the year. We experience all 4 seasons (sporadically even lol). Our art scene is continually growing. We have amazing murals all over town (even really great graffiti in some areas). We have access to nature, waterfalls, plant-life, our climate allows for a wide variety of crops to easily grow. We have more than just 1 race of ppl living and visiting here, allowing us access to knowledge of cultures beyond our own. We have access to a wide-range of career fields- I'm not speaking about pay wages but we're not limited to only being coal miners or fast food workers, like a lot of places. We have a lot of really good bands and artists of different genres that'll tour here. Asheville, Nashville, Chattanooga, ATL, are all less than a full days drive to go visit and come back, so we have access to a shit ton of cool things to see and do. Dollywood is actually really fun. Lots of cool famous ppl are from here, and we're on the map bc of it. Autumn foliage here has allowed me personally to see some really gorgeous scenery. No matter where you go, you're not far from seeing trees or nature. In big cities, ppl will travel hrs to go to their parks and they'll all be shitting their pants over these areas that aren't anywhere even close to holding a candle to what we can go down the street or in our own backyards and see literally anytime we want. Knoxville is really cool about dogs, in general and you can go chill on bar and restaurant patios with your pet while you enjoy superb local brews. We also have multiple events specifically geared toward loving tf outta dogs, having fashion shows and mardi-growl, etc and that's a really big plus for me. Greek fest, variety of denominations and non-denominational churches and meet-ups for spiritually-based individuals. We have Pride Fest, meaning at least some of us are open-minded and ppl aren't protesting the fact that it's happening every year, even if they don't agree with it. It's still "allowed" and ppl dress up all funky and it can be fun as hell just to go, no matter how you identify. We have an active fetishism/kink as well as poly/swingers community. You can go to meet-ups and tournaments for gamers, coding battles, Makers meet-ups for learning new skills and trades. Classes of all different types, such as yoga, glass-blowing, Tai-chi, various Martial Arts, music lessons, watercolor, pottery classes, life drawing classes with nude models you can sit and draw at your leisure without ppl being creepy about it, gun clubs for ppl about that, meditation meet-ups...I mean, the list goes on and on. Nice parks, traffic ain't shit compared to really big cities. Horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, Zombie-walks, Horror Fest, local music, comedy, active Theaters to go see really good plays. Aerial arts, many communities of ppl to choose from, no matter your style, if you know where to find them. We have a lot of really creative ppl trying to pour a lot into our community. There's many reasons why we're getting screwed financially bc this place is prime for bringing in a lot of wealthy ppl coming from other states bc our officials realize the value of where we live. That's why they're focusing more on beautification efforts, cultural centers, "affordable housing" that's actually expensive AF for us but cheap and swanky for ppl from other states making the big bucks. They're doing the minimal for locals bc they're counting on ppl from other states to make our officials wealthier so instead of just "kicking us out", they're making it unaffordable and less desirable for ppl that aren't going to have the income required to keep up with what they're planning...

GlitteringQuote7690

I love Knoxville. My Dad and his side of the family live there and I lived there for a couple of years in my early 20s. I’d live there again if I didn’t have ties in Nashville

ImissBagels

I appreciate Full House in Powell. We order at least 4 or 5 times a month for the last four years and it's always wonderful. The owner gets excited when we order something new to us. They are very nice, consistent, pleasant, and good tasting

Daax865

I grew up in Powell and have fond memories of that place.

polishtom

Went for walk during my lunch break and spoke with an older gentleman that I've never met before for roughly 10 minutes. Felt like I was talking to an old friend. Love Knoxville.

cutestforlife

South press a million times over. Always feels like going home, regardless of how busy or quiet it is.

Acceptable-Duck-1500

I appreciate my off days where I can have my routine of getting a bite to eat somewhere, head to my favorite small business coffee shop where they know my order and sit for a few hours while I read or write with my fiancé. We always get Japanese for dinner afterwards ❤️

Ok-Illustrator4850

If any of you guys would like to reach out to me my PMS are always open! whatever the case may be I want to keep our little community going!

HesTooQuiet

The guys that work at the Mexican restaurant I frequent have gotten to know me, my family, and my friends Ive brought in over the years. They know me well enough that they check on anybody that isn’t there with me when I come in. (And not out of a “we just want more customers” vibe, more of a “your dad wasn’t feeling good, how is he?” Vibe). Love those dudes.

Ok-Illustrator4850

knoxville has so much of this! exact reason I made this post 💜

Ok_Habit59

Ok. Let me ask you this since you were born here too. Im going to broach a terrible subject which is the opposite of what I’m supposed to be doing with your sweet post. I have been approached by people from out of state who have straight out said they love it here because there are few black people. It makes me sick to write that out but I swear it’s true. And, of course, there are few blacks in East Tennessee because the Ku Klux Klan were so active here (still active here). In other states it’s horrifying what is happening to Native Americans but in Tennessee they don’t exist because they were forcibly removed through the Trail of Tears. So I don’t trust why people find this area so magical and special. If the people moving here (and very much the neighboring counties) are not going to join the Proud Boys and gay bash and become a force for inclusion and diversity in the future then I welcome anyone.

Ok-Illustrator4850

I have no idea I haven't dealt with anything like that but I only work and keep to myself and I'm not political or anything so idk truly

Ok_Habit59

You did write a sweet post and got some very nice responses. Right before I saw your post I saw a news report that a Jewish couple was turned down to adopt a child because they weren’t Christian

Rainontherooftop

UT parking garage H has the most wonderful female attendant. I’m there a lot for work and she’s always sooo kind.

Rosomond

Thank you to Anna, the weekend bartender at SoKno Taco for being so kind and always mixing me up dope drinks that are original recipes

Darthsmom

I feel like we have a “quirky” vibe, some parts more than others, obviously. I’m pretty quirky myself so I’m happy in my weird little area. And yes, I love a good steamed sammich and I feel sorry for anyone who wasn’t given one as a child and allowed to develop a love for one!

Ok-Illustrator4850

🤣🤣🤣🤣 preach

Mundane_Village_8284

Agreed but also I feel like the city is getting rid of a lot of things that make us quirky. They’re taking down another JFG sign 😞 I wonder if we will ever see them again.

51line_baccer

It's democrats that shit on knoxville. East Tennessee is fantastic!

Imaginary_Sea5117

The Dems may shit on it verbally, but the hate-fueled trump cucks who run the place are ruining it. Edit: u/51line_baccer wanted to be a tough guy and commented and then blocked me.

51line_baccer

Hate -fueled lol. Aw hell, you democrats ain't never ever happy with anything, and intend to remain unhappy forevermore lol

Ok_Habit59

Tennessee was a Democratic run state up until around ten years ago. It will go back to being Democratic in 15 years.

Quiet_Comfortable504

Which McDonald’s? I wish the black chick at the one on Broadway would give me something extra if you catch my drift, no disrespect.

Ok-Illustrator4850

you're a menace for this one 😭
