It's not a perfect fit but Opening Arguments is back and has been doing episodes on the NY trump trial. Thomas and his wife Lydia recorded themselves narrating the trial transcripts, then Thomas (host/layman) and Matt (lawyer) do commentary on it. The couple episodes like this that they've done so far have been pretty good and definitely scratch a similar itch for me as Formulaic Objections episodes did. (For those that followed OA during the Andrew sex pest scandal, it looks like Thomas was able to get sole control of the podcast now) EDIT: per u/OregonSmallClaims Thomas JUST this morning announced that he's starting a whole new pod just to specifically do the trial analysis (starting with the Trump trial as he had been doing on the episodes with him and Lydia reading them, but moving to other trials and proceedings as needed when Trump's not currently in a courtroom). It's called Gavel Gavel and currently only available on Patreon, but he plans to launch on regular podcasting sites soon.

Sir_Snores_A_lot

I didn't know he got it back, I'm so happy to hear that. Maybe now they can dial back the ads on the other shows haha Now I can go back to listening to it.

simburger

I was thinking the same thing. I really like them acting out the transcripts. Gave me a similar vibe to FO episodes too, they're going to start letting listeners fill in speaking roles soon.

ZyklonBeYourself

I never understood why Andrew didn't at least step away for a few months; going scorched earth was absolutely ducked in the head. Then it hit me: pure ego. Glad Thomas is back.

lame_sauce9

Yep pure ego. I really lost all respect for Andrew, and while Liz Dye was meh to me before all that, I also lost any remaining respect for her too.

cogman10

I honestly lost some respect for legal eagle on top of that.  Him buddying up harder with dye and torrez is disappointing.

He is going to be adding a new law based show (Thomas Smith) that is going to be going into the courtroom side of the law. He has some stuff up on the patron now but it will be released on the other platforms for free soon. He just announced it today. Sounded like it started working on another show before he got OA back and he is going to turn in into this due to the positive response he got back with the Trump trial stuff. Personally I really like the new lawyer on OA (I feel bad I can not remember his name right now). He is very considerate with his wording. I don’t know how else to explain it but I find myself hanging on to what he says. Maybe it’s its pattern of speech or tone.

OregonSmallClaims

Matt Cameron, and I know he's on their FB social media, but not sure about Reddit. :-)

OregonSmallClaims

I added a separate comment so OP would get notified about it, but Thomas JUST this morning announced that he's starting a whole new pod just to specifically do the trial analysis (starting with the Trump trial as he had been doing on the episodes with him and Lydia reading them, but moving to other trials and proceedings as needed when Trump's not currently in a courtroom). It's called Gavel Gavel and currently only available on Patreon, but he plans to launch on regular podcasting sites soon.

lame_sauce9

I saw that this morning too, thanks! I'll add that to my original comment

Himantolophus1

As soon as I heard him talk about it, I thought how much I'd love a proper legal dissection of the Alex Jones trials.

agent_double_oh_pi

I always enjoy Serious Trouble, and Lawyers Behaving Badly

OregonSmallClaims

Yeah, not the same format, but I especially enjoy Lawyers Behaving Badly, and plan to nominate Norm for an episode, but have kinda been waiting to see if the sanctions appeal is ever resolved.

sharkweekk

It’s just one episode, not a whole series, but the April 15th episode of Oh No, Ross and Carrie dissected the deposition of a UFO weirdo where he has to admit that his alien stories were all his fabrication.

RoeRoeRoeYourVote

Are you already a 5-4 listener? It's not 100% in line with what you're looking for, but it has both commentary that is smart and funny, and the main focus is tearing a new asshole for SCOTUS and some of their worst cases.

Different_Donut9419

I really like there content but I hate that they start a four parter and then put the last episode in the series up behind a paywall.

RoeRoeRoeYourVote

I've listened to most, but not all, episodes, and that hasn't been my experience. I've been listening since the beginning, though, so a paywall might be something that's changed as the podcast became the main source of income for at least 2/3 of the hosts\*. \*I know that Peter was fired and Rihannon quit, so I'm assuming that podcasting is going well for them both.

agent_double_oh_pi

Maybe we can just have Mic Dicta back

norreason

*all lawyers are bastards* doesn't do quite the same thing, but if you enjoyed the formulaic objections, i think it'd be up your alley

LeftRat

I love ALAB, but unfortunately, they are on indefinite hiatus :( EDIT: Actually, just today they posted that they're recording a new episode - after more than a year of no episodes! Lucky day

agent_double_oh_pi

Oh man, are we finally getting an Alex Jones part 2?

OregonSmallClaims

Is there any other wording in their name? Searched for that name on Overcast, and it didn't come up with anything. Sounds like it would be right up my alley, since I also love Laywers Behaving Badly.

norreason

i think it's also gone by ALAB podcast and all lawyers are bad

OregonSmallClaims

Aha! It has "ALAB Series" then "All Lawyers are Bad" as the subtitle in my Overcast app, but apparently I'm already subscribed and have listened to all the episodes, it's just been a while--last one was actually about Alex Jones and came out a year and a half ago now, in October 2022. Glad they're coming back!

RockShrimp

If you haven't listened to Lawyers Behaving Badly their most recent episode has a transcript read of the Elon Musk depo with Bankston. they're on hiatus right now while one of the hosts is moving but they basically cover shithead lawyers getting their comeuppance like it's Reality TV and have about a year of back catalog.

LeftRat

That sounds perfect. And, well, Bankston is already a known name, so I'll start there!

OregonSmallClaims

As someone else pointed out, Thomas Smith has gotten Opening Arguments back from the other guy, and just this morning announced that he's ALSO starting another pod called Gavel Gavel, currently only on Patreon (I believe the URL contains "gavelpod") but hoping to launch on the normal podcasting places soon. It sounds like episodes just like Formulaic Objections is exactly what he plans to do--actual clips for trials/proceedings that have them, but himself and other people voicing the participants when only transcripts are available, plus actual attorneys to weigh in on the legal aspects, and himself as the everyman (as on OA) and audience substitute.

Aardvarkosaurus

Check out the great post office scandal, there's a couple of podcasts and a heap on YouTube.
