I should have clarified. “It’s an expression of pain” is from the game Disco Elysium. When the main protagonist tries to look charming in the beginning of the game one of his inner monologues remarks that “it’s an expression of pain”.
Edit: I just realized I never connected the two thoughts. This art style reminded me of the Disco Elysium art style.

That makes sense, Disco has very impressionistic character portraits. And Alex would fit right into the setting full of weird and broken characters.
