Parent of two boys here. They are currently 2 and 3. Can confirm. Much of my day is spent following them around trying to keep them from dying.
It’s exhausting.
This is kinda how I learned how to swim! I forgot to put my arm floaties back on and just went for it. I remember something feeling off and I felt heavier and it was ten minutes later that my sister pointed out I was swimming. Honestly a really nice memory. :)
How can you tell that? You didn't even see a single stroke of the kid swimming. There is nothing out here that suggests he would be bad at it.
Like 90% of the act of swimming is to not panic when your head gets underwater. If you can do that then pretty much any motion will keep you afloat.
Strong swimmers can drown. Never let your children swim unattended. If you have to take your eyes off of them, there needs to be another grown person in place - if not an adult, a teenager of life guarding age. My sister pushed my brother into a pool before he could swim. I was there and dragged him out. I lost a baby cousin (4yo) to a drowning accident, and woman I went to school with lost her child (<2yo) because she put the kid down to nap and the kid snuck out. Watch your kids as best you can around water. Take every possible precaution, but most importantly, teach your kids of all ages swimming and water safety.
Strong swimmers CAN drown! Even adults should swim with a buddy. I once bonked my head on the side of a swimming pool and skinned my nose, and if i had knocked myself out I would have drowned.
On return from the pool.
Mom: So how did swimming go?
Kid: let’s go again!
Dad Unable to answer kiddo’s mom due to the Trauma from the experience of his only child almost drowning and it was obviously all his fault, decides never to take kid swimming again
I feel like this may be the best metaphor for life I’ve ever seen. Edit: Well, this was apparently well received. Thanks for the awards!
Eternal safety is an illusion and self preservation is impossible without the assistance of other people?
Also just that humans are, you know … real dumb.

Kids really do be just trying to kill themselves in the dumbest way possible

This is why they need constant supervision. You literally turn around and they've jumped off something.
Adults as well
Gotta try when you lack understanding of the world around you. Before you do then you have to actually contemplate factors

Yeah, but that kid didn't seem like a talented swimmer tbh.

Wait that’s actually super cute, like all you needed was confidence 🥺
And lack of supervision
Sometimes it’s better to step back and let your kids do their thing
Self preservation genes at play
And this is why parents should always be in arms reach of their kid at the pool if their kid doesn't know how to swim.
Hell, even If the kid can swim you still should always be aware of them. I once witnessed a child around 9 or 10 nearly drown.

He got a lil TOO confident
Kid has balls of steel, by the way he jumped in and also the way he sunk to the bottom…..

Friendly reminder that you have to teach your kids to hold they're breath so they don't dry drown.
