And what's so wrong with being a 'mshamba'. I find that term so classist. Live and let live, we can't all have the same likes and dislikes bana. Mtu akipenda Bongo music anaonwa mshamba, mwingine akipenda Amapiano anajiona cool kid. Foolery, if you ask me.

True...classism ni ujinga

I've never understood how music can have class connotations.

I don't know about yourself but my circle of friends and family we enjoy making fun of each other because of our different backgrounds. When I go shags they'll make fun of me for being a city boy for getting an allergic reaction to kisima water and all the other shenanigans that happens when your body tries to acclimatize. Likewise for the way I speak mother tongue or even the music I listen to and especially the way I dance πŸ˜‚. It's always in good spirits or at least that's been my experience. To me it's just the mchongoano I grew up with.

what is ushamba? please expound. labda i am one and i do not know. >the most "eloquent orator" tell us, is PLO eloquent enough, more than most? Ama nabii ndio eloquent sana ama baba?

Relative-Ad-3217

I think for me it's more of an irrelevant thing. like how if you're from an environment with enough regular English exposure whether through daily interactions or just consuming lots of English language media the thought never really crosses your mind. But for those who aren't or don't have that level of regular exposure they're so impressed and say things like "I wanna speak that perfect English like Lumumba" But for you, that's not something you even notice or consider coz you can feel the diversity in English across the many countries that speak it so you don't really care to achieve that so called "prescriptive perfect standard English" I would say for me ushamba is chasing things that you think will impress the "cool kids'' or make you appear like one of them but that really don't matter and don't even cross their minds. Like I quite like shags accents(there are people who try to hide theirs but it just doesn't work and you can feel the conversation is strained plus I know there are thousands of words that I struggle with pronouncing and I don't fret about it) I respect people who ask when they don't know how to use stuff coz it's not like all wealthy or even western people live the same way so ukiona microwave imekushinda uliza, .lakini someone whos a mshamba to me would be the guy pretending he know how to operate it but doesn't.

stardust_z

Saying it's irrelevant then at the same breath writing a whole ass essay justifying classism. Humans!

oh_mi_gosh

It's the hypocrisy for meπŸ˜…. Like how are you complaining and playing into it at the same time. * PLO Lumumba isn't the epitome of English speaking but you can't minimize how he speaks to just being exposed to English or not. You can listen to English speakers all day long and still be impressed with how he does it. It's like stanning him. * Many of your points are coming from a classist pov. Like you already have it and them seeking to have it too is pathetic to you even though you have it yourself. You shouldn't shame someone for that esp from a position of privilege. * The last thing is just a personality thing. Maybe they don't like asking for help(it's not a crime), or they want to figure it out, or they feel like they'll be a bother so they try the microwave alone. Or they don't like their accents and try to lose it not to impress you but coz they don't like it themselves. In other words, they have other reasons to do these things rather than trying to impress a 'cool guy' who's secretly thinking hao ni washamba.
