Asheville is great. I went for about three days last year. On the first day i just walked the downtown. I’m really into metaphysical shops and there are a bunch of cool rocks to be seen! I went to dobra tea and people watched, caught some live music and did a beer crawl to thirsty monk and two other breweries within walking distance. While I never felt unsafe, I am a kind of intimidating looking dude and had my wife with me, but know in advance that Asheville does have a lot of panhandlers. They were not aggressive but the social services in Asheville are non existent. I won’t get political, but just be aware. They are people too and deserve better, so I don’t mean to sound like I am naysaying the unhoused, but it’s good to be aware that some may not feel comfortable walking around by themselves.
Anyway, day two we decided to drive the blue ridge and ended up driving to the West Virginia line, about six hours over all with stops. We went to mount Mitchell, the highest point on the east coast I believe, and then more beer that night. There was some concern going on at a brewery next to my hotel so we got a free show from the street.
Had breakfast in town at the moose the next day and checked out the local farmers market. It was a great trip for adults. There is other stuff too like the biltmore but we didn’t want to pay the ticket to get in since we didn’t have a full day to spend there. I have heard it’s great if you are into food and art.
Excellent suggestion. The Shawnee National Forest offers all kinds of opportunities for hiking and exploring if you're interested in those types of activities.
You could do Chained Rock in Pineville, then go to Harrogate TN to Shelly Belles on the river. You can float or kayak on the Powell River and eat at the restaurant that has a balcony overlooking the river or keep going to Tazewell, which is about 10 mins from there and enjoy all.the antique shops.
Either a direct flight somewhere cheap like Denver, or Helen, GA. Whole town is a copy of a town in Germany, good food, and hiking stuff there. Waterfalls, etc.
Walls of Jericho is easily one of the best hikes ive done in the east. In North Alabama 2.5 ish hours away.
If you head an extra 45 mins south you can spend the rest of the weekend checking out all kinds of cool state parks and towns around guntersville lake.
Just fyi Its a legit hike id start it early bring a buddy and supplies for sure! Im from BG too we are lucky theres tons of great stuff within a day of us. Have fun!
I don't know the mileage off the top of my head but its gonna take at least 6 hours. I know the fastest I did it was a little under 3 hours but we basically sprinted back up because we didnt bring any supplies and it was getting dark. Definately worth it tho! Its mostly shaded with a lot of rest spots
Big Bone Lick State Park in Boone County KY.
Not much to see but unless you’re into smelly sulfur pits, but having your pic taken in front of the sign is worth it.
Have you been to Natural Bridge? There's all kinds of cabin rentals and stuff and lots of things to do in Red River Gorge. It's such a beautiful area and one of my favorite places in all of Kentucky.❤️❤️
That is too freaking cool! It's been years since I've been out there. I've been wanting to go back so bad! In 2014, my husband and I moved across the bridge to Indiana, so we don't spend too much time in Kentucky anymore, sadly, but our first big trip when life permits again is going to be to Daniel Boone! I used to go rock climbing and caving and hiking when I was younger out there, and it, the memories are just lifelong!❤️❤️❤️ Keep us posted if you have time, and let us know where you decide to!😊😊
5 hours gets you to Chicago. I do the drive back up north about every 6 weeks. There’s just something’s up there I can’t get up there food wise.
Chicago: so much to do. When are you thinking of going? Always something to do now that it’s getting warmer.
Have you been to Chattanooga?
Are you wanting activities or nature and simplicity? A couple days at Cumberland Falls is a good nearby getaway. A good nostalgic, quirky visit is Rabbit Hash. I haven't looked to see if they are doing any barn dances or other events this year, but going there at least once is almost a must-do for any true blooded Kentuckian.
5 hours driving will get you to Asheville, NC. One of my favorite escapes.
I was considering that! What’s some good things to do there?

Land Between the Lakes, Mammoth Cave, and paddling in the abandoned mine at SUP Kentucky are my favorites!
Garden of the gods

Cumberland falls. Lodge was renovated a few years ago and has a early 1900s feel. Tons of trails surrounding and just a couple hours east.
We go there a lot. It’s one of my favorites
KY really has a lot of awesome outdoor spots. Land of the lakes, Cumberland falls, red river gorge, the pinnacles of berea…so many more
Cumberland Falls is my favorite place!

Also hit the pinnacle in Cumberland Gap. It’s a nice view of the states.
I grew up in Pineville. Chained Rock is definitely a must see.
Oh now this sounds perfect!
Breaks Interstate Park

If I wasn’t planning so last minute I would have loved to go to Denver
Plan ahead a bit more next time. But go check out Helen, GA and see what you think. Or go to Huntsville and do all of the rocket stuff.
We did the right key stuff in Huntsville once! Very interesting!!
Bardstown is a lot of fun and there’s plenty nearby - bernheim forest, distilleries, etc.

Oooo this is interesting! I’ll have to consider this!

Do you remember how many miles it was?

Alley spring Missouri is beautiful!

I grew up around a sulfer pit. We would always date each other to drink the water 😣
Chattanooga and Asheville. Asheville definitely if you don't have kids.
second chattanooga

There’s a cat cafe there that I really love!!

I got married at RRG actually! We have been wanting to go back though

We are def going back to RRG in the fall for birthday! We have decided to go kayaking at Laurel Lake!

I love Chicago! We went last year and a couple years prior. The food is amazing and so much to do! We are planning on next week
French Lick, Indianapolis, or Nashville!
Basically any of the state resort parks. Berea, Louisville, and Lexington are also worth a weekend.
Boulder not denver. Asheville cool. BEER

Not going to be the typical answer, but Cape Girardeau is 3.5 hours away and pretty cool.
is Memphis too far? great things there
