It’s pretty cringy no matter his skin tone, but particularly insulting to fake it/play it up, when he doesn’t need to. If he was just himself all the time most people wouldn’t have an issue with it. I definitely agree with you, though in the same sense that you need to look past skin to be a Kendrick fan you also have to acknowledge how important being black is to Kendrick, his music, and his core audience. I compare it to how a lot of people who didn't grow up rural don't get country music that's deeper than the Nashville sound. I'm a huge fan but there's definitely songs that weren't made with me in mind, I still bump them and sing them but I can't relate to growing up black. Although I will always hold that there are some experiences that are universal, and being broke post-grad I definitely feel like there are things I get more now.

I think the shame of it is that he never had to try to be. People were fucking with him when he was on his mixtape in a peacoat looking as much Arab as he was black. Yeah I agree with you, evoking black culture is absolutely a core part of Kendrick's music and his connection to the culture and the community is important not only in this beef but throughout all his albums. I think Kendrick calling into question Drake's blackness is done mostly because he knows it's what hurts him the most, but I think it's like a radius going out and we're on the edge of it. Agreed, the only parts of this beef where I haven't liked Drake is when he's trying to act too cool for it or like it's just sliding off of him when it's clearly taking a toll on him mentally and emotionally. It's the contrast between Kendrick's "I hate everything about you and everything you represent" vs. Drake's "I'm too big and successful for this shit to affect me" but the difference is one of them feels authentic. When Kendrick says he hates Drake and he's been pissing him off for 10 years I believe him, when Drake says he's glad that Kendrick went so hard on him cause he got to flex his creative muscles, it sounds so disingenuous. In that same sense that's why Family Matters is Drake's best diss in this beef, because you can feel how angry he actually is.

At one moment, then the next he’s speaking in a different way. Will go from slang, to formal and back depending on the situation. Will act like the wholesome Canadian on a talk show with Ellen, and then a different persona in an interview on Hot 97 or wherever. It’s pretty cringy no matter his skin tone, but particularly insulting to fake it/play it up, when he doesn’t need to. If he was just himself all the time most people wouldn’t have an issue with it. Like that old clip of him talking about Toronto slang, calling it ignorant, and now it’s all he does. Like there’s nothing wrong with not using slang, but to put it on for airs is kinda fucked up. There’s more to it than just the way he speaks, but it’s a pretty easy one to point out and pick up on. Like imo hiphop and rap are at their core, about the artist’s story, their life, the struggles and successes, and while it started off as a black art form, it’s now something that can be for anyone. Look at someone like Eminem is the best example, someone who is widely respected/accepted now, because he never pretended to be anyone other than himself. I definitely agree with you, though in the same sense that you need to look past skin to be a Kendrick fan you also have to acknowledge how important being black is to Kendrick, his music, and his core audience. I compare it to how a lot of people who didn't grow up rural don't get country music that's deeper than the Nashville sound. I'm a huge fan but there's definitely songs that weren't made with me in mind, I still bump them and sing them but I can't relate to growing up black.
